Bank stopped widow from accessing matured FDs; commission orders Rs 13.87L payment

A cooperative bank in Kerala restricted a woman's withdrawals after her fixed deposits matured and were transferred. The woman needed the funds for her mother's medical treatment and gold loan repayment. Despite the bank's claims of irregularities, the district consumer commission found they provided inadequate justification. The commission awarded the woman Rs 13.87 lakh and additional compensation for her distress.
