Transgender I-cards issued before 2026 amendment to stay valid: Centre to Supreme Court

The government assured the Supreme Court that transgender identity cards issued before the 2026 amendment will remain valid. This assurance came during the hearing of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the recent amendment. The court sought clarity on the status of transgender persons who obtained identity cards under the 2019 law. It will also examine cases where identity cards were allegedly cancelled or replaced after the amendment.
