This 19th-century trading town 420 kilometers north of Moscow was submerged underwater by a massive Soviet reservoir

Amid the reservoir development in the 1940s, the remote Russian city of Vesyegonsk grappled with significant flooding, with two-thirds of its area underwater. Although wooden homes were salvaged through relocation, stone structures were lost entirely. During World War II, it was primarily women who managed the arduous task of resettling displaced families, ultimately forming a revitalized town that retained the name of its predecessor.
