Teen invents a smart bandage that can tell early when Arizonas giant saguaro cactus is dying

A 17-year-old Arizona student has developed KktosPatch, a biodegradable smart bandage designed to detect bacterial necrosis in saguaro cacti through colour changes interpreted by a smartphone app. Jorge Covarrubias project has won major science fair awards and earned him a place at the 2026 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair.
