The word need carries a more specific meaning in psychology than it does in everyday conversation. People often say, I need a vacation, I need a new car or I need this jacket, but Self-Determination Theory, developed by psychologists Richard Ryan and Edward Deci, uses the concept in a much narrower and more specific way.
