Water buffalo were released on Ermakov Island in 2019 to restore natural grazing. These animals help create habitats for insects, amphibians, and fish. Their grazing also contributes to mosaic landscapes and seed distribution. Six female buffalo were added in 2024 to enrich the existing herd. Ermakov Island is now one of the Danube Delta's most biodiverse areas.
