A century-old dam on California's Carmel River was removed, restoring fish spawning grounds. Crews rerouted the river and dismantled the structure over two and a half years. A study found the dam removal did not cause significant downstream damage to the environment. This project reconnected twenty-five miles of vital habitat for threatened steelhead trout. The successful removal offers a model for other aging dams across the United States.
