In 1902, engineer Willis Carrier was trying to control humidity at a Brooklyn printing plant, not create a way for people to stay cool. His system stabilised paper and improved printing, while also lowering temperatures. Carrier later patented his air-treatment technology and developed systems for factories, homes, shops and ships, helping establish the foundations of modern air conditioning.
