In 1672, Johan de Witt, the influential Grand Pensionary of the Dutch Republic, met a tragic fate as public outrage erupted. Alongside his brother Cornelis, he was viciously murdered by an enraged mob near a prison. The brutality didn't stop at death; their bodies were desecrated, with some reports claiming parts were consumed by the crowd.
