EXCLUSIVE: Geeta Agarwal Sharma talks about Yeh Prem Mol Liya: It has a different concept. They have brought a new subject to the screen; says women buying more movie tickets changed Bollywood writing: Earlier, characters like ours had no identity

Geeta Agarwal Sharma has emerged as one of the most dependable character actors in recent years, thanks to her arresting screen presence and, equally importantly, her choice of roles. Especially in the post-pandemic era, several of her films and shows have either struck a chord with audiences or generated considerable attention, like 12th Fail (2023), Laapataa Ladies (2024), Fighter (2024), Saiyaara (2024), Satluj (2026), Ohh My Dog (2026), etc. Two weeks ago, the title song of the much-awaited Yeh Prem Mol Liya was unveiled, and its visuals featured Geeta Agarwal Sharma in a prominent role. Directed by Sooraj Barjatya, the film stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Sharvari in the lead. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Geeta spoke about Yeh Prem Mol Liya and also made an interesting observation about how changing cinema-going habits have led to stronger roles for women on screen. When asked what audiences could expect from Yeh Prem Mol Liya, she replied, I cant say much, but it has a different concept. They have brought a new subject to the screen. I feel very lucky that instead of being just falane ki biwi or falane ki maa, actors in my age group are now getting strong roles and distinct identities in scripts. Viewers get a better understanding of our characters, their likes, dislikes and personalities. Earlier, such characters often had no identity of their own and would simply toe the husbands line. This is a major improvement that has happened in writing. Geeta Agarwal Sharma continued, I believe this change has also happened because more women are now buying tickets and going to the cinemas. Aapka audience badla toh uss audience ke liye bhi kuch likha jaane laga. Earlier, men frequented cinemas much more, and they would only occasionally go to watch films with their partners or mothers. Naturally, a lot of stories were written from the male point of view. She added, Now, with women becoming more empowered and gaining greater economic independence, their presence in scripts has also increased. Female characters are being written with more depth and individuality. I consider myself very lucky to be working in an era when this change is taking place.
