Four features that take the iPhone 18 Pro to the next level

Macworld At its highly anticipated Surprise and Shine event , Apple on Wendesday announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. While the iPhone Duo may have stolen the show with its all-new, foldable form factor, Apple continues to offer its best mobile technology for casual users through the Pro family. The iPhone 18 Pros fresh additions may not be as dramatic or apparent as those of its predecessor. Still, the new flagships pack a ton of welcome upgrades across the line, making them especially enticing for those using older iPhone generations. Some of the most notable iPhone 18 Pro enhancements revolve around core elements, including its screen, main camera lens, processor, and more. Here are the new features that take the iPhone 18 Pro to the next level. Professional camera Perhaps the most significant introduction to the iPhone Pro line is the all-new variable aperture lens, similar to DSLR and mirrorless cameras. The iPhone 18 Pros wide camera now features six laser-cut blades bound to a rotor mechanism, controlling how much light reaches the sensor. In dark environments, you can widen the opening to produce crisper shots, and Night mode works faster. Conversely, the blades close in lighter setups to minimize overexposure. The Camera app allows you to pick between four aperture settings, and third-party camera app developers can bring this functionality via a dedicated API. The new variable aperture offers better control to the photographer. Apple In the video department, iPhone 18 Pro users can now apply Cinematic effects to 60 fps videos after theyve been shot. Previously, you needed to pick the dedicated Cinematic mode before hitting the record button. This isolates subjects by blurring the background in a professional-looking manner. Otherwise, Time-lapse recording now supports 4K with stabilization and Dolby Vision HDR. Low-light video has also been improved, along with the algorithms that power the Audio Mix featurewhich can now detect music. Advanced camera hardware requires matching software, and the iPhone 18 Pro models take that into account. The devices offer a revamped Camera app with support for Pro controls. These let you easily adjust the white balance, aperture, shutter speed, and more. You could also view a histogram to check the exposure levels. Casual users will also appreciate Photographic Styles 3.0, which unlock texture and grain controls. Supercharged by A20 Pro It goes without saying that the new iPhones pack a brand-new mobile chip. The 2-nanometer A20 Pro processor features six CPU cores, including two super cores and four efficiency ones. The GPU goes for seven cores and boasts up to 40 percent faster speeds compared to last years A19 Pro. In the AI department, the dual 16-core Neural Engine offers double the processing power for AI tasks, such as Siri AI and computational photography. Combined, these upgrades contribute to a 50 percent increase in memory bandwidth, unlocking desktop-class computing on the latest iPhones. Apple To maximize the A20 Pros efficiency, the iPhone 18 Pro introduces an overhauled vapor chamber with triple the surface area. The SoC is now directly connected to it, increasing its thermo-management efficacy. Not only does this minimize processor throttling but it also helps limit energy overuse. As such, the new models offer the longest battery life to date, with the iPhone 18 Pro lasting for 36 hours and the 18 Pro Max stretching it to 45 hours when playing video on a single charge. Charging an iPhone 18 Pro to 50 percent takes around 15 or 30 minutes when opting for wired or wireless chargers, respectively. Meanwhile, a 5-minute wired charging session can provide around seven hours of video playback on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Dynamic Island 2.0 Another welcome iPhone 18 Pro change is the smaller Dynamic Island cutout. Not only does this make the device more immersive, but it also upgrades its functionality. Previously limited to up to two Live Activities, the shrunken Dynamic Island on the latest models can fit up to three. This allows you to easily glance at several ongoing events, like order tracking, flight status, timer progress, and much more. Apple Cherry picking season Lastly, the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max build upon last years dramatic exterior redesign. The back glass panels color now matches that of the aluminum body, contributing to a more cohesive look. The finishes have also been refined and expanded, letting you pick between Black, Silver, Glacier, and the soon-to-be-fan-favorite, Burgundy. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max start at $1,199 and $1,299 for the base variants with 256GB of storagea $100 price increase compared to last years release. You can pre-order one beginning Saturday, September 12, with general availability to follow on Friday, September 18.
