Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrigs disease, is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder that damages motor neurons controlling voluntary muscles. It often starts with muscle weakness, twitching, slurred speech or difficulty swallowing, and eventually progresses to widespread paralysis. Most cases have no known cause, though a small percentage are inherited. Average survival is three to five years after symptoms begin, though some live longer. Eric Danes death has renewed awareness about the urgent need for ALS research and support.
