Psychology says women who compliment female strangers may be taking a small social risk with a surprisingly big payoff

People who gave compliments tended to underestimate how good their words would make the other person feel. They were often more concerned about whether the compliment would come across naturally or be expressed well. In reality, recipients generally responded more positively and felt better than the compliment-givers had anticipated.
