Psychology says theres a reason people suddenly talk about the weather when conversation gets awkward

Across multiple studies, people consistently believed they had made a less positive impression than they actually had. Conversation partners generally liked them and enjoyed the interaction more than they assumed. Researchers observed this pattern in several settings, including conversations between strangers in laboratories, students forming relationships with dormmates and people meeting one another at a workshop.
