Psychology says people who keep touching their hair on video calls may be responding to the constant mirror effect

Video calls place people in the unusual position of watching themselves while simultaneously interacting with others. This can heighten awareness of appearance, increase self-monitoring and create pressure to manage how one comes across on screen. Repeatedly touching the hair, therefore, may sometimes be less about fixing the hair and more about responding to the unique psychological experience of seeing yourself during a conversation.
