Many New York City crosswalk buttons no longer change the light; roughly 1,000 inactive buttons are still in place

In New York City, many pedestrian buttons remain broken, misleading users into thinking they can control traffic signals. Despite being inoperative for years, these buttons are still present as the city chooses to avoid the costly removal. As residents continue to press these ineffective buttons, plans are being made to enhance accessibility for disabled pedestrians over the next decade.
