Lewis Pugh swam one kilometer off South Georgia in 2017. This swim was part of a campaign for greater water protection. Protection rose from two percent to twenty-three percent just over a year later. In February 2024, an additional 166,000 square kilometers were protected. This expansion brought the total protected area to thirty-six percent of the maritime zone.
