Mexicos National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR) launched an ambitious restoration program in 2014 with the goal of beginning to restore 1 million hectares of degraded land by the end of 2018. The initiative supported communities and landowners working in priority watersheds and areas affected by forest loss, fires, pests, natural disasters, and degraded soils. CONAFOR invested roughly 12 billion pesos, or approximately US$591 million, while providing technical and financial assistance.
