In 2000, a Spanish researcher found up to 7 micrograms of neuroactive alkaloids in every gram of chocolate. 26 years later, the finding still adds a chemical clue to the mystery of chocolate cravings

Researchers found neuroactive alkaloids called tetrahydro-beta-carbolines in chocolate. These compounds are also present in alcoholic beverages and wine. Higher levels of these alkaloids appeared in darker chocolate samples. Caffeine and magnesium were also considered potential contributors to cravings.
