In 1970, fishing guide Lancelot Jones and his sister-in-law sold more than 277 Florida island acres to the National Park Service for $1.2 million; Jones kept the right to live in his family home

The Jones family built a remarkable multigenerational history on Porgy Key and Totten Key at the southern end of what is now Biscayne National Park. Israel Parson Jones purchased Porgy Key for $300 in 1897 and developed agricultural enterprises involving pineapples and key limes. His descendants continued the familys connection to the islands, including fishing guide Lancelot Jones. In 1970, Lancelot and his sister-in-law Kathleen sold their share of more than 277 acres to the National Park Service for $1.2 million while Lancelot retained the right to live in the family home. The Jones Family Historic District was listed in 2013.
