Ancient Canadian Shield rocks are quietly producing white hydrogen, a naturally occurring gas that could reshape the clean energy market. Scientists measured hydrogen escaping from mine boreholes near Timmins, Ontario. Each borehole released about 8 kilograms a year. Across nearly 15,000 boreholes, that could exceed 140 tonnes annually. The finding gives natural hydrogen exploration something it lacked before: long-term, real-world evidence that underground hydrogen production can persist for years.
