Around 1772, a German-Swedish pharmaceutical chemist discovered oxygen and identified it as 'fire air' but failed to report it in time. Carl Wilhelm Scheele prepared the gas before Joseph Priestley published his findings. His experiments also led to work on chlorine, manganese, acids, minerals, pigments and photographic processes.
