62 generators, no permits: New Jersey data centre's $1 million fine exposes the regulatory challenge of powering artificial intelligence & how fast AI infrastructure can be built

DataOne, an AI data centre in Vineland, New Jersey, has been fined $1.07 million by NJDEP. State inspectors found unpermitted natural-gas generators operating at the facility during a recent inspection. Each of the 62 generators has a significant power capacity, raising environmental concerns. DataOne disputes the characterization of the generators, indicating they are temporary equipment. The company plans to apply for the necessary permits while complying with state regulations.
