Kenya has demonstrated how agricultural waste can become a source of energy, with 45,000 tonnes of vegetable waste converted into biogas at Vegpros Naivasha facility. Methane produced through the process was used to generate electricity for daily farm operations. The example forms part of a wider discussion around waste-to-energy technologies, including incineration, gasification and pyrolysis. Incineration can drive a turbine to produce electricity and reduce waste volume by 95-96%, while gasification and pyrolysis can convert materials such as biomass, wood and plastic waste into a gas mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
