US economy second quarter growth: GDP grows 2.2 percent as consumer spending and business investment rise

The US economy grew 2.2 percent in the second quarter from April to June, the Commerce Department announced recently. Consumer spending and business investment helped propel the growth of the economy. The large increases in imports cut into GDP growth. Spending by consumers was up 3.8 percent, while investment by businesses, less housing, climbed 9 percent. The revised estimate was sharply higher than the 1.5 percent the government had estimated in July.
