This 10,000-acre Texas wetland was cut off from sea and turned into a dust bowl. 70 years later, many native flora and fauna are being restored by conservationists

Bahia Grande, a South Texas wetland, was transformed into a dust bowl after a 1936 ship channel project. Conservationists reopened a channel in 2005, allowing water to return to the basin. Seagrass and marine life quickly re-established themselves in the reflooded estuary. Native vegetation is now being restored on nesting islands, showing high seedling survival rates. This landscape is regaining its ecosystem functions after decades of damage.
