In 2019, South Africa put 700 kg of waste plastic into a 300-metre road; Jeffreys Bay turned discarded packaging into its asphalt surface. The pilot project used recycled plastic in asphalt to address plastic waste and road maintenance. The road was built in Woltemade Street, Jeffreys Bay, and used plastic pellets to replace part of the bitumen binder. The project also explored durability and maintenance benefits.
