For years, Bogots Doa Juana landfill simply accumulated city waste while quietly leaking methane into the atmosphere. That changed in 2009 when the site launched a major gas-capture operation. Engineers drilled network pipelines across the facility to collect biogas generated by two million tonnes of rotting trash each year. Instead of flaring the fuel, workers route it into heavy engines that supply clean, continuous electricity directly to Colombias national grid. The effort turns a massive urban burden into reliable local energy, cutting roughly 800,000 tonnes of greenhouse emissions every single year.
