In 1970, the Statler Brothers took a chance on Bed Of Roses, a song written by group member Harold Reid that Kenny Rogers had considered but ultimately decided not to record. The group went ahead with it despite feeling that the song was different from their usual image. The decision paid off as the track became a major country hit, reaching No. 9 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and No. 58 on the Billboard Hot 100.
