In 1942, two experienced US Navy officers disappeared during a routine antisubmarine patrol off the California coast. Their blimp, L-8, was later found drifting and eventually landed in Daly City with the radio still working, the parachutes untouched and no obvious signs of a struggle. Despite a major search and formal investigation, neither officer was ever found, leaving the so-called Ghost Blimp mystery unsolved more than eight decades later.
