In 1941, China lost Peking Man fossils during wartime evacuation. 85 years later, the missing remains have not been recovered despite searches and historical investigations. The fossils represented about 40 Homo erectus individuals and included 14 skulls. Their disappearance during World War II remains unexplained, while scientists continue research using casts, measurements and new discoveries at Zhoukoudian.
