Palanquins, the very word tracing its origins to the Sanskrit paryanka and the Tamil pallakku, were how the high and mighty got around Madras of the 17th and 18th Centuries. Even records of The East India Company contain details of hire charges of palanquin bearers, with rates higher than even hiring horses. Nowadays, this yesteryear means of transport is mainly consigned to museums
