Kisan Sangh Calls for Reopening Nizam Sugar Factory to Support Farmers
HYDERABAD: All India Kisan Sangh state joint secretary Mood Shoban said the problems of sugarcane farmers had worsened and several sugar factories had been shut down as farmers were not being given Rs 5,500 per tonne even when the recovery was 9.5 per cent. They have to get the amount into their accounts in 14 days but it is not being adhered to. This situation is leading to suicide of farmers across the country. There is a need to fight anti-farmer policies by coming together. He sought a bonus of Rs 500 per tonne for sugarcane. Many farmers are not getting the crop yield promised to them, he said, adding there is a need to open the Nizam Sugar factory as promised in the Congress manifesto.

Hyderabad : BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao on Sunday said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddys statement that were was no plan to establish a pharma village at Lagcharla, site of an attack on the district collector, should be taken with a pinch of salt. He claimed that a gazette notification issued by the state government had specifically mentioned about its establishment in the area. In a statement on X (Twitter), Rama Rao said, The CM had on several platforms said that a pharma city would be established in Lagcharla. Is it not true that his brother Tirupati Reddy is going around villages with police and private goons threatening ordinary village folk? Are false cases not being filed against farmers who refuse to yield to the intimidation? Now to claim that only an industrial corridor will be established there is a sheer attempt to fool the people. Responding to a courtesy visit by anganwadi workers, he said he would take up their issues with the government and discuss them in the forthcoming Assembly session. The workers told the BRS leader that those running mini-anganwadi centres were facing a heavy work burden as they had to attend to food distribution, child care and teach children in addition to survey duties and Pulse Polio implementation. Spike in Hyderabads Air Pollution: City Logs Worst AQI of 2024
Hyderabad : Live air quality index (AQI) data from Googles new feature for the past week has revealed a troubling spike to 171 (very unhealthy) on November 20 the highest the city has recorded this year. In widely shared images, large swathes of the city were marked red. On November 24, Banjara Hills reported poor AQI of 133, tech hub Madhapur 128, Vittal Raonagar and Zoo Park 157 and 129, respectively, according to Google AQI data. However, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) bulletin for November 24, Hyderabad recorded a moderate AQI of 123 with PM (particulate matter) 2.5 pollutants. According to Google, Hyderabads air quality ranged from AQI of 84 on November 19 to 171 at 8 am on November 20. According to AQI India, this is the highest recorded this year. Google says its AQI figures are derived from a multi-layered AI fusion approach, combining data from sources like government monitoring stations, commercial sensor networks, satellite imagery, weather patterns, traffic conditions and land cover, among others. Incidentally, the website of the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TGPCB) was down till 10.10 pm on Sunday. For the week, average pollutant levels were PM2.5 at 59 g/m and PM10 at 110 g/m. carbon monoxide (CO) averaged 736 ppb (parts per billion), sulphur dioxide (SO) at 6 ppb, nitrogen dioxide (NO) at 13 ppb, and ozone (O) at 11 ppb, AQI India data suggested. Pulmonologist Dr Kishan Srikanth Juvva, after learning about the air pollution concentrations in the city on Sunday, said, Air pollution with such concentrations of PM2.5 is linked to increased morbidity and mortality not just among adults but also in children. Beyond pulmonary issues, prolonged exposure can cause cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and psychological problems. He warned that air pollution also adversely affects infant brain development, lung function (including asthma), and mortality rates in children. CPCB data showed Hyderabads air quality is worse than southern cities like Bengaluru and Chennai. With an average AQI of 123, Hyderabad was classified as moderate, causing breathing discomfort for individuals with respiratory conditions. In comparison, Bengaluru recorded an AQI of 100, and Chennai 88. Bengalurus better air quality was attributed to its green cover, while Chennai benefited from coastal winds. Hyderabad, despite green cover, struggles with higher dust concentrations due to its landlocked geography. In Indian landlocked cities like Hyderabad, Delhi are influenced by tropical climate which leads to higher dust concentrations compared to cold yet landlocked cities in the US or Europe, explained Prasad, senior environmental scientist at Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TGPCB). Prasad also clarified a recent misunderstanding about recent news reports on AQI figures, stating, Reports of AQI 300 were from Parbhani, Maharashtra, not Hyderabad. According to CPCB data, Delhi recorded a very poor AQI of 318, filled with PM2.5 pollutants, exacerbated by stubble burning and stagnant weather. Mumbai, facing the sea, recorded an AQI of 204, categorised as poor, which poses discomfort during prolonged exposure, even for healthy individuals. Kolkata followed with a similar AQI of 220. Poor AQI According to Googles air quality index (AQI) feature, the city was recording poor levels Banjara Hills: AQI 133 (PM2.5: 70; PM10: 126; SO: 22; NO: 54) UoH: AQI 128 (PM2.5: 61; PM10: 142; SO: 22; NO: 57) US Consulate: AQI 125 (PM2.5: 66; PM10: 137; SO: 22; NO: 54) Madhapur: AQI 128 (PM2.5: 63; PM10: 142; SO: 22; NO: 54) Vittal Raonagar: AQI 157 (PM2.5: 77; PM10: 129; SO: 22; NO: 56) Zoo Park: AQI 129 (PM2.5: 64; PM10; 143, SO: 22; NO: 55) PM relates to particulate matter; smaller the size, more the harm. Drones Changing the Face of Farmlands in Telugu States
Hyderabad: In the fertile fields of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, a quiet technological revolution is transforming agricultural practices. Farmers like Muralidhar Kasala from Daulatabad, Sangareddy have turned to drone technology to overcome challenges like labour shortages, uneven fertilisation and health risks. I pay Rs 400 per acre for drone services. Earlier, hiring six labourers per acre used to cost Rs 800 daily, and manual spraying often caused respiratory problems. Now, drones have saved me time, money, and health, he says. The benefits are resonating widely, including in Nalgondas Peddavoora mandal. Vamshi Veeriah, a farmer from Gannekunta village, shares how drones have become indispensable on his farm. Earlier, pest infestations and uneven spraying would lead to crop loss. I could only react after the damage was done. Now, with drones, I can act early because the data tells me exactly where the problem lies. The precision is incredible. Every corner of the field is covered, unlike manual spraying where some areas are missed, he explains, visibly delighted. In Kadapa district, Siva Reddy Sunkesula finds the service model of drones particularly invaluable. Owning a drone is not feasible for me but with this service, I only pay when I need it. Tasks like spraying, which used to take days and a lot of labour, are now done in hours. Ive seen my yield improve by at least 15 per cent, and its much less stressful, he says. He also highlights the health benefits, saying, With manual spraying, I would end up inhaling chemicals. Drones eliminate that risk entirely. These stories are part of a larger transformation driven by Hyderabad-based start-ups like Marut Drones, which is pioneering the Drone as a service (DaaS) model. Farmers can access precision services such as pesticide spraying, fertiliser broadcasting and crop monitoring without having to purchase, get trained or maintain the equipment. Our aim is to make drone technology accessible and affordable for all farmers, no matter the size of their fields, says Prem Kumar Vislawath, CEO and co-founder of Marut Drones. For farmers like Veeriah, the value lies in precision and efficiency. The drone can do in two hours what used to take days with labourers. And its not just about speeddrones ensure accurate spraying, so theres no wastage of fertilisers or pesticides, he reasons, Siva Reddy adds that drones have improved his resource management. I now know exactly how much water or pesticide is needed and where thanks to the data provided by drones. This has helped reduce my costs significantly while increasing my output. Companies like Marut Drones work with farmer-producer organisations (FPOs), Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and agricultural universities to educate farmers on using drones effectively. Government initiatives like the Kisan drone scheme, which provides financial subsidies for adopting drone technology, further reduce the entry barrier. Our collaboration with local organisations ensures that farmers understand the long-term benefits of this technology, says Vislawath, while adding, Its not just a toolits a way to make farming sustainable and profitable. Currently operating in 18 states, Marut Drones aims to extend its reach nationwide by 2025. With over 200 drones already sold and 35 dealers on the ground, they plan to deploy 500 drones and establish 100 dealerships to support farmers more effectively. The company is also exploring applications beyond agriculture, including infrastructure inspections, firefighting, and drone deliveries. For farmers across the Telugu states, drones are more than just machinesthey are a symbol of modernisation. Drones have completely changed how we farm. I cant imagine going back to the old ways, says Vamshi Veeriah.

TG Govt Faces Debt Crisis: Interest Payments Surpass Salary Bill
Hyderabad: The state government is grappling with a severe financial crisis as the burden of repaying loans and the interest has surpassed its expenditure on salaries and pensions. The government now allocates over Rs.5,000 crore per month for debt servicing, compared to Rs.3,000 crore towards salaries to three lakh employees and 1.5 lakh pensioners. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who oversees the finance portfolio, sought the intervention of Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in August to reschedule high-interest loans inherited from the BRS government. The Centre is yet to respond. Telanganas financial woes trace back to the BRS governments aggressive borrowing between 2014 and 2023 to fund projects like the Kaleshwaram irrigation scheme, Mission Bhagiratha drinking water project and construction of government infrastructure, including hospitals and collectorate complexes. Loans taken by government-run corporations often at steep interest rates ranging from 8.93 to 10.49 per cent further exacerbated the crisis. These corporations, many of which lack revenue-generating capacity, are fully dependent on the state government for repayment. Data obtained from the finance department revealed that at the time of the states formation in 2014, debt servicing constituted just 4.1 per cent of Telanganas total income. This figure has ballooned to 40.9 per cent, marking a nearly tenfold increase in a decade. Annual loan and interest repayments have skyrocketed from Rs.7,254 crore in 2014-15 to an estimated Rs.60,691 crore in 2023-24. As of March 31, 2024, Telanganas debt stood at Rs.6.85 lakh crore. This includes Rs.4.01 lakh crore raised through bond auctions by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI); Rs.1.2 lakh crore borrowed for irrigation and infrastructure projects; Rs.99,663 crore raised by corporations with state guarantees and Rs.63,140 crore borrowed without guarantees. Finance department data reveals that five corporations account for 95 per cent of the loans raised by all state corporations. The BRS governments practice of creating corporations with minimal or no revenue streams solely to secure bank loans has been a major contributor to the states financial troubles. In 2021-22, the state corporations accounted for over 52.9 per cent of the total loans raised by all corporations across India, highlighting the scale of the states borrowing spree. With debt servicing now a major challenge, the current Congress government is left with limited options to manage its finances. Bhatti emphasised the urgency of rescheduling loans to ease fiscal strain but warned of further financial instability if immediate measures are not taken. The state government faces the dual challenge of sustaining welfare and development initiatives while also tackling a debt burden that threatens to derail Telanganas financial stability. Two Elderly Women Donate Their Bodies to Osmania Medical College
Hyderabad: The final acts of two elderly women, who had no prior connection with medicine, have left the medical fraternity overwhelmed and inspired. The two women, 92-year-old E. Venkata Ratnamma and 78-year-old V. Hymavathi, belonged to the same family and passed away within a week of each other. Both had decided to donate their bodies to the anatomy department of the Osmania Medical College (OMC). In her will written in 2011, Ratnamma expressed her wish to donate her body for academic study and research. She passed away on November 5 due to age-related causes. Inspired by the reception given to Ratnamma's body at OMC during her memorial service, Hymavathi, her son's mother-in-law, decided to follow suit. Hymavathi's passing was unexpected for the family. She had been suffering from lung disease and was dependent on an oxygen concentrator. Her body was handed over to the OMC, where students and faculty gathered to pay their respects. This act of selflessness by two senior women has left a lasting impact on the medical community. This is an inspiration for us as today at the memorial ceremony, even more pledges and enquiries were made about body donations, said Dr N. Vani, director of medical education and a member of the family.

DC Edit | Hard line, freebies aided NDA in Maha; JMM too
There is no royal road to geometry, Greek mathematician Euclid famously quipped, in reply to a royal question as to whether there are better ways of understanding his treatise on mathematics. There are no better ways to winning elections either other than proper planning and hard work, if one were to go by the election results in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. If one were to identify a pattern in the electoral victories of the Mahayuti and INDIA in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, respectively, then it will be a campaign rhetoric that appeals to the mass base of the party and the offer of costly freebies that can sway the undecided voter, especially the women. Its a clean sweep the BJP made in Maharashtra where it is close to winning a majority on its own after having played second fiddle to the now emaciated Shiv Sena for a long time. The party built itself brick by brick, made and broke alliances and set up its own political equations. Every step resulted in an incremental accretion to its mass base which has now put the party in pole position. An aggressively communal and patently divisive campaign, spearheaded by none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ably supported by Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath ensured that the grassroots cadre and even sympathisers got the message clear. Credit must also go to chief minister Eknath Shinde who, despite an electoral reversal hardly six months ago and with a point to prove against the might of the Thackeray legacy, soldiered on calmly. He introduced development schemes which created a positive vibe about the government and incentive schemes that floored women voters. Together, they got the alliance to coast to victory. The RSS which chipped in with its organisational network and operational excellence was also part of the larger gameplan. The arrest and harassment of JMM leader and chief minister Hemant Soren by the Enforcement Directorate curiously came handy for him and the party. It added to its appeal in the predominantly tribal state of Jharkhand. The efforts, spearheaded by Union home minister Amit Shah, to drive a wedge in the tribal community with the narrative that the JMM and Mr Soren were allowing infiltrators from Bangladesh into the state made little impact. The BJP played its blatant communal card in Jharkhand, too, but the people, by and large, ignored it. It may even have angered them, helping the JMM consolidate its hold over the states indigenous population. The freebies, especially targeting women, that Mr Soren offered also played a role in helping him storm back to power. The monthly allowance scheme and its proposed hike, along with other financial aid, could be a burden on the state exchequer in the future but has worked electorally for the ruling party. Voters preference for a collation with a solid leadership also appears to have played a role in both the states. Though Mr Shinde was seen as a shaky leader in the beginning, he consolidated his position slowly, though there is no clarity on his return as chief minister. Moreover, the leadership of Mr Modi continues to answer many a question on this count. It was the same case in Jharkhand where Mr Soren was seen as the only choice. Indian politics is a 24-by-7 business and only those with stamina and endurance can hope to win this race.
DC Edit | Priyankas win a status quo verdict
Status quo may have prevailed but there was a tinge of excitement to it with the advent of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra into mainstream national politics and the capturing of a bit of lost ground by UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath. Bypolls, per se, tend to favour the party in power, which is what was seen in a majority of the byelections to the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies held along with the Maharashtra and Jharkhand end-of-term polls. The resounding victory of Priyanka in the Wayanad seat in Kerala vacated by her brother Rahul revalidates the familys hold on a national political leader image, regardless of the degree of its success in terms of states and number of seats, which may have declined since 2014 and the arrival of BJP. Victory may have been a given for the Congress in a three-way fight with the LDF and the BJP in Kerala. It was the margin by which Priyanka won by well over four lakh votes that spells out a promise that this is no one-seat phenomenon of a prominent legacy political personality. A fresh face in Parliament for the grand old party to oppose the ruling coalition and its policy thrusts cannot but be a good thing when a few contentious bills are certain to come to the House. However, it does also engender fear of a parallel power centre that may attract party insiders so far accustomed to seeing only Rahul as the Congress heir. BJP had more than the big Maharashtra win to celebrate as Yogi Adityanath helped the party claw back considerable ground, including a win in a SP stronghold seat, after the lukewarm performance in the Lok Sabha polls in UP to which the partys fall from the dominant single party majority status could be ascribed. The fact that Bengal is Mamata Banerjees fortress hardly needs to be stressed. The TMC sweep in the bypolls is just a reminder that she is the supremo in the eastern state with a unique hold on the people who see her wish as their command. Not to be outdone, prominent Northeast figure Himanta Biswa Sarma delivered a sweep. The recent trend of AAP making Punjab its stronghold was sustained in the bypoll verdict. The surprise may have been Congress 3-0 performance in Karnataka as they snatched a seat from the Gowda family. Considering the flak flying from corruption allegations in Bengaluru, the verdict was a reiteration of the hold of ruling parties.

Kishwar Desai | Storm Bert, Xmas ads engulf UK; Joy honours IVF nurse Jean Purdy
L ondon may not be as bad as up North where snow and floods are expected, but it is cold enough, brrrrr. Of course, the impending storm (there always is one!) has a friendly name Bert. Whoever invents these names makes them seem harmless. But watch out when Bert comes knocking on your door. These frosty days are also the signal that Christmas is approaching, and instinctively we are lured into boosting the British economy, tempted by the lip-smacking competing advertisements from the major stores: M&S, Sainsburys, Co-op et al. The theme is similar. Some little kid or a harried housewife suddenly encounter a magic lantern or a hovering angel who fills up their home with Christmas goodies and soon they are entertaining a crowd in their living room. The food displayed is mainly sweets of a variety of descriptions, a roast chicken and various drinks. The ad then tells you which store is responsible for the generous spread and then, mesmerised, you find you have clicked the button and ordered things you cannot even consume till next Christmas! * These are traditional advertisements but nothing has launched the kind of furore that the new Jaguar ad Copy Nothing has created. It is meant to rebrand the car. However, people are almost frothing at the mouth denouncing the very idea that you can have an advertisement about a such a stylish car (and a very British brand owned by Tata Motors, no less) without the car featuring in it. Not even a tiny glimpse of it. I also thought that it is a fairly static advertisement with just a bunch of people dressed in very colourful clothes sitting on a rock . hmmm. One wonders what Ratan Tata would have said. But knowing now (after dipping into his biography) that he had an impish sense of humour, he may just be chuckling at our reactions. However, at least it has got everyone talking Jaguar which we all swoon over, but few can afford. It seems there will be further exposition on this rebranding effort which so far Elon Musk has not appreciated either. So let us wait for it. * Decolonisation is the buzzword now and all museums are doing their best to deal with the backlash from the rule of the Empire- walas . What can they do with the vast collections from the colonies that have been cosily housed in British museums and now need to be re-examined? That is the question. But rather than return it all to the erstwhile colonies, why not do a re-interpretation and bring in contemporary artists to rework on the display? That is the new thinking and to some extent it seems to work. At least it raises questions and makes the backstory more accessible to the Museum visitors. We are doing the same re-interpretation of narratives and objects in the Partition Museum in Delhi and Amritsar and are interested to see that this is happening in the UK too. For instance, an artist working with a Welsh museum has taken an 18th-century plush sofa belonging to Robert Clive and which lay originally in his London home and placed it in a recreated ordinary middle class drawing room along with the humble tea trolley and other bric-a-brac. She has found the experience empowering that people can actually sit on the sofa which belonged to Robert Clive. This experiment is supported by the Welsh government and the Arts Council of Wales but there is more in the offing. * The new film, Joy on the work of the British scientists, Patrick Steptoe, Jean Purdy and Robert (Bob) Edwards who created IVF reveals many of the prejudices and challenges the three scientists faced. The husband-and-wife team of Jack Thorne and Rachel Mason developed the story of the film and Thorne wrote the screenplay after going through the process themselves to give birth to their son. The film particularly honours the work of Jean Purdy a nurse who bravely battled questions and comments from the church and her own community but has never before been part of the mainstream narrative on the science of IVF. Now IVF is used by millions but the birth of Louise Joy Brown the first test tube baby was fraught accusations against what was called Frankenstein science. This is an important film (playing on Netflix) coming out at a time when there is so much discussion on womens rights to reproduction, and choices. * But then, of course, if you dont want to watch Netflix on a chilly winter evening there is also jazz as well as Western classical music the Monteverdi Choir singing Bach for Christmas, opera (Donizettis Elixir of Love ) at the Coliseum, and films on the big screen including Wicked which is the prequel to The Wizard of Oz . There is also a Palestinian documentary, Mediha , about the life of Mediha Ahmad who shot it with a little help by an American documentary maker Hasan Oswald.
