KMRL submits feasibility study for Mumbai Water Metro: 250-km network, 29 terminals proposed
KOCHI: In a major step towards expanding its national footprint, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has submitted a detailed feasibility study report for a Water Metro project in Mumbai, modelled on its successful Kochi Water Metro initiative. The proposed plan envisions a 250-kilometre waterway network, with 29 terminals and 10 routes, covering the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The report was submitted to Maharashtra Ports and Fisheries Minister Nitish Rane, who officially received it and directed relevant departments to initiate steps toward its implementation. We expect the Maharashtra government to entrust us with the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Mumbai Water Metro as well, a senior KMRL official said, adding that Minister Rane appreciated the quality and timeliness of the report. The proposed water metro will connect several key water bodies and creeks across MMR, including Vaitarna, Vasai, Manori, Thane, Panvel, and Karanja, offering an integrated and eco-friendly transport alternative. The feasibility report was earlier presented at a high-level meeting in Mumbai, chaired by Minister Rane. The KMRL team, led by Chief General Manager Shaji P Janardhanan, included Senior Deputy General Manager Nishanth N and Manager Arjun Krishna K. Senior officials from the Maharashtra Maritime Board, including CEO M Pradeep Prabhakar, IAS, and Chief of Ports Capt. Praveen Khare, were also present. This marks the first time KMRL has secured a consultancy assignment through a competitive bidding process, establishing its credentials as a key national player in sustainable urban transport. KMRLs Consultancy Division, which prepared the report within a record timeframe, is fast emerging as a strategic business arm. In addition to enhancing revenue, the division is instrumental in replicating the Kochi Water Metro model in other Indian cities. Currently, under the directive of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), KMRL is also conducting feasibility studies for Water Metro projects in 21 other cities across 11 states and two Union Territories. Experts suggest that if KMRL is entrusted with the DPR and subsequent implementation in Mumbai, it could solidify its position as a global leader in sustainable urban water transport mirroring the role Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) plays in Indias metro rail landscape.

Congress attacks Modi Govt for abstaining on Gaza ceasefire resolution in UN
NEW DELHI: The Congress on Saturday attacked the Centre for abstaining from voting during the UNGA resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza and alleged that India's foreign policy is in shambles. The opposition party also demanded answers from the government on whether India has abandoned its principled stand against war, against genocide, and for justice. It is now increasingly evident that our Foreign Policy is in shambles. Perhaps, PM Modi must now take a call on his EAM's repeated blunders and set some accountability, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said. In a post on X, he said that 149 countries voted for a UNGA resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza while India was only one of the 19 countries that abstained. We virtually stand isolated by this step, he added. Kharge further stated that the Congress had condemned the attacks by Hamas on the people of Israel on October 8 2023. We have consistently condemned the indiscriminate actions that included a siege of the Gaza Strip and bombings in it. 60,000 people have died and there is a widespread and horrific humanitarian crisis. Have we abandoned India's consistent stand advocating for a ceasefire, peace, and dialogue in the Middle East and West Asia? he asked. Kharge affirmed that this position is deeply rooted in India's long-standing tradition of non-alignment and moral diplomacy, through which the nation has always promoted justice and peace in global conflicts. Noting that on October 19 2023, the Congress called for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza, he said, India cannot stand by silently or passively while the region faces horrific violence, humanitarian catastrophe, and increasing instability. Echoing similar sentiments, AICC general secretary, organisation, KC Venugopal said India always stood for peace, justice, and human dignity. But today, India stands alone as the only country in South Asia, BRICS, and SCO to abstain on a UNGA resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza. 60,000 killed. Most of them women and children. Thousands starving. International aid blocked. A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding, he said in a post on X, questioning if India has abandoned its principled stand against war and genocide. Venugopal called on the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to explain what had changed in the last six months that led India from supporting a ceasefire to abstaining from the vote. Training guns on the Narendra Modi-led government, he accused the Centre of having little regard for Jawaharlal Nehru's legacy and questioned why it had abandoned Atal Bihari Vajpayee's principled stance on Palestine. Emphasising that India has long been a principled voice for ceasefire, peace, and dialogue in the Middle East, Venugopal reiterated that India has historically championed the cause of justice and humanitarian values in global conflicts. At a time when the region is witnessing unspeakable violence, humanitarian collapse, and growing instability, India cannot afford to remain silent or passive, the Congress leader noted. Similarly, Congress MP from Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also expressed her disappointment at India's stance at the UN. This is a tragic reversal of our anti-colonial legacy. In fact, not only are we standing silent as Mr Netanyahu annihilates an entire nation, we are cheering on as his government attacks Iran and assassinates its leadership in flagrant violation of its sovereignty and complete contravention of all international norms, she said in a post on X. How can we, as a nation, just abandon the principles of our constitution, and the values of our freedom struggle that led the way for an international arena based on peace and humanity? she asked. Noting that there is no justification for this, she added that true global leadership demands the courage to defend justice, and India has shown this courage unfailingly in the past. In a world that is increasingly divisive, we must reclaim our voice for humanity and stand fearlessly for truth and non-violence, Vadra asserted. AICC media department head Pawan Khera also said that India's UN abstention on the Gaza ceasefire comes as an act of staggering moral cowardice - a shameful betrayal of our anti-colonial legacy and the values of our own freedom struggle. He recalled how India once stood tall for Palestine and became the first non-Arab state to recognise the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1974, inviting Yasser Arafat to attend the 7th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit held in New Delhi in 1983 and formally recognised Palestinian statehood in 1988. We stood for justice not as strategy, but as principle. But today, that proud legacy lies in ruins, he said. The abstention is also a craven U-turn from India's December 2024 vote in the favour of a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, proving that the Modi government remembers nothing, stands for nothing, and chases only photo-ops even if they involve blood-soaked handshakes, Khera added. As Israel sets West Asia ablaze - bombing Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and now Iran - Modi's complicity has abandoned India's conscience. The world does not listen to the nation that speaks loudest, it listens to a nation that speaks with clarity, courage and conscience. And India must never surrender that voice, his post on X read. The 193-member UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to adopt the resolution introduced by Spain that demanded an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire. India was among the 19 nations that abstained, while 12 countries voted against the resolution, which got 149 votes in favour. India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish said that the resolution comes against the backdrop of the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza.

With plane crash, family's excitement for flight attendant Roshni's wedding turns into despair
THANE: Flight attendant Roshni Songhare was about to add a new chapter in her life as she was set to tie the knot with a merchant navy officer next year, and her excited family members had started making preparations for it. But all that excitement turned into despair after the news of the London-bound Air India flight crashing in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon broke. Roshni, 26, was one of the crew members on board that flight. This development plunged the Songhare family living on Rajaji Path in Dombivli town of Maharashtra's Thane district into numbing silence. Roshni had left her home three days ago for duty excited, as always, to serve on international flights - this time from Ahmedabad to London. But the fatal crash of the aircraft snuffed out her dreams and left her family members - 50-year-old father Rajendra, mother Shobha and younger brother Vignesh completely shattered. She was the heartbeat of this home. We were getting her engaged in November and married in March, a close relative told reporters in a trembling voice. Time played cruelly with her, he said. A native of Mandangad in coastal Ratnagiri district, the Songhare family had moved to Mumbai for work and shifted to Dombivli two years ago. Roshni, a bright and determined girl, was the family's pride and pillar. Her father worked tirelessly to educate both his children, and Roshni, inspired by the skies, pursued and completed a flight attendant course. She began her career with SpiceJet and later joined Air India, where she opted for international assignments relishing every airborne mile, her family members said. She was so happy to be flying again. We were all looking forward to her wedding. Everything was going right, said her uncle Praveen Sukhdere, who has rushed Dombivli to be with the grieving family. After the news about the plane crash flashed, the family members immediately tried to contact her. But when there was no response, panic gripped. Her father and brother immediately rushed to Ahmedabad, holding on to hope. Roshni's fianc, a highly educated officer in the merchant navy from Guhagar taluka, currently living in Thane, had met her through a family acquaintance. She was finally getting everything she had worked so hard for, a neighbour said tearfully. Apart from being a flight attendant, Roshni was also a social media influencer with over 54,000 followers on Instagram. Her account, which was once a reflection of celebration of her journey, is now filled with condolence messages, with one reading, You flew high, Roshni. You just flew a little too far. From a little girl with stars in her eyes to an international flight attendant with wings of hope, Roshni's journey inspired many, her close relatives said. NEW DELHI: A new study reveals that climate change is expected to cause a 43% increase in the intensity of extreme rainfall events throughout the country, along with a two-fold rise in heatwave days in major Indian cities. It recommends establishing a climate observatory to provide real-time early warnings about extreme weather events to help minimise damage. Conducted by IPE Global and Esri India, the study titled Weathering the Storm: Managing Monsoons in a Warming Climate analysed district-level spatial and temporal assessments to develop heat stress scenarios for the years 2030 and 2040. It aimed to establish a connection between climate change and the increased frequency and unpredictability of extreme rainfall and heatwave events. According to the study, major cities in India, including Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Patna, Surat, Bhubaneswar, and Thane, are likely to experience a twofold increase in heatwave days by 2030. These rising heatwave conditions are expected to lead to more erratic and intense rainfall. Extended heat wave conditions are likely to trigger more frequent, incessant and erratic rainfall events, said Abinash Mohanty of IPE Global, a co-author of the paper. The paper underlines the grim situation of climate change's impact. It points out that 8 out of 10 districts in India are going to experience multiple instances of incessant and erratic rainfall by 2030. The frequency, intensity, and unpredictability of these extreme heat and rainfall events have risen significantly in recent decades, said Mohanty. The study shows that India has witnessed a 15-fold increase in extreme heat wave days across the March to May and June to September months in last three decades (between 1993-2024). Alarmingly, the last decade alone has witnessed a 19-fold increase in extreme heat wave days. We found that the monsoon season in India is witnessing an extended summer-like condition except on non-rainy days, said Mohanty. According to the study, more than 75% of districts in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Manipur will witness the double whammy of heat stress-induced erratic and incessant rainfall by 2030. Districts of these states will at least witness one instance of heat wave during March, April, and May by 2030. We advocate for establishing a Climate Risk Observatory (CRO) to provide real-time risk assessments at national, devising risk financing instruments to mitigate heat risk and extreme rainfall events, said Mohanty. The study also suggests appointing heat-risk champions within district disaster management committees. This will allow these agencies to prioritise and unify the heat-risk mitigation efforts at the district level and, consequently, accelerate heat resilience.

A tragic accident near Mumbra station resulted in four fatalities and nine injuries, prompting a railway investigation.
