Fake call centre targeting US citizens busted in Navi Mumbai; 20 held

THANE: Police have busted a fake call centre in Navi Mumbai, from where cyber frauds involving at least Rs 12 crore were allegedly committed mostly against US citizens, and arrested 20 persons in this connection, officials said on Thursday. The police suspect that the scale of the crime is very large and many wanted accused are involved in it. The action against this call centre, which was in operation in Turbhe area of Navi Mumbai was taken on Thursday, they said. Navi Mumbai Cyber police station and the Crime Branch took the action. The police received a tip-off on November 18 that a call centre was in operation under the guise of various bogus companies to defraud citizens. Immediately, a joint team of police conducted a raid and uncovered two distinct methods of fraud being run from there. In the first method, the employees of the call centre targeted US-based citizens through WhatsApp groups and lured them by promising high returns on stock market investments. Separately, they also targeted the American citizens by carrying out ransomware or malware attacks on their computers, an official statement said. The raid brought to light a massive scale of the financial crime, it said. The investigators found 97 persons working at the fake call centre. They also found several WhatsApp numbers and bank accounts being used by those found at the location, it added. The transactions of 71 bank accounts, details of which were sent to US citizens and others, for fraud were checked. Out of these, 61 accounts were found to have transactions worth a total of Rs 12.29 crore. Some of these bank accounts were checked on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCCRP) developed by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). It was found that 31 cyber fraud complaints have been registered across the country, the statement added. The police seized 108 computers, 38 mobile phones, and 5 GSM servers, it said. A case was registered at the Cyber police station in Thane under Sections 318(4) (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 319(2) (punishment for cheating by personation), and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with sections of the Information Technology Act. So far 20 accused have been arrested and remanded in police custody till November 23 by a local magistrate, the police said. The scale of the crime is very large and many wanted accused are involved. After a thorough technical investigation of the crime, the amount of fraud is likely to increase further, the police said in the statement.

UN report flags Indias rising methane emissions, highlights agricultural gaps

India lacks policy to cut methane emissions from agriculture and livestock, says UN status report

A new United Nations assessment on global methane emissions has warned that India, already the worlds third-largest methane emitter, does not have a dedicated policy framework to reduce emissions from its biggest source: agriculture and livestock. The Global Methane Status Report highlights that Indias agricultural activities alone contribute 12% of global agricultural methane emissions, among the highest shares worldwide, largely driven by its vast livestock population and extensive rice cultivation. This is the first official status report since the Global Methane Pledge was introduced by the UN Environment Programme at COP30 According to the report, India emitted around 31 million tonnes of methane in 2020, accounting for 9% of global methane emissions. Methane, a potent heat-trapping gas, is released mainly through enteric fermentation in cattle, manure handling, and paddy cultivation under waterlogged conditions. While the assessment acknowledges that millions of Indian farmers rely on livestock and rice farming for their livelihoods, it points to a significant policy gap: Indias Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) do not specify any measures to reduce methane from agriculture, even though it is the countrys largest source of methane emissions. The report identifies India as a major global hotspot for crop residue burning, a significant contributor to methane emissions. Alongside China, South Korea and Southeast Asian nations, India continues to witness an increase in stubble burning despite global declines. It highlights a lack of strong, targeted policies to curb residue burning, particularly in densely populated farming regions. The assessment notes that projected global methane levels have declined due to stricter waste regulations in Europe and North America and a slower rise in natural gas market expansion between 2020 and 2024. These regions are expected to reduce methane emissions further by 2030 based on legislation already in place. However, the UN warns that such progress remains insufficient. It emphasises that full-scale adoption of proven methane-control technologies and mitigation practices is essential for countries to meet the Global Methane Pledge, which targets a 30% reduction in global methane emissions by 2030. Achieving the pledge could avert 0.2C of global warming by 2050, prevent over 180,000 premature deaths annually, and avoid nearly 19 million tonnes of crop losses each year by 2030. The estimated economic benefits from these avoided impacts exceed USD 330 billion annually. The report projects an 8% increase in methane emissions from rice cultivation in India between 2020 and 2030. With India hosting the largest livestock population globally, methane produced through enteric fermentation and manure remains exceptionally high. The assessment notes that India has significant potential to curb methane through improved paddy irrigation techniques such as alternate wetting and drying (AWD), better manure management, and wider utilisation of crop residues, but these areas remain insufficiently addressed in national plans.

Miffed Shinde ministers skip Fadnavis Maha cabinet meet

MUMBAI: Ministers from Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena on Tuesday boycotted the weekly cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in protest against induction of a Sena leader from Dombivali into the BJP, a development that shows cracks in the MahaYuti alliance ahead of the Maharashtra civic elections. BJP state president Ravindra Chavan inducted the Sena leader from Dombivali after a string of such moves by the BJP in Palghar, Thane and other districts, which the Shinde party called operation lotus. Deputy CM Shinde was the lone attendee at the cabinet meeting from the Sena. Fadnavis later called Sena ministers for a meeting to resolve the issue. He told the ministers that Sena was the first to start poaching, citing induction of a BJP leader from Ulhasnagar into the Shinde party. Now, BJP is doing it as a reaction, therefore Sena should not make a hue and cry. If Sena is concerned about poaching of their leaders, they should first stop it and respect each other, Fadnavis said. A Sena minister said the BJP has been poaching tall local leaders. Sena ministers are getting step-motherly treatment in the MahaYuti government. Adequate funds are not sanctioned for Sena ministers and MLAs. Most of the key decisions are being taken without consulting the ministers concerned. The CMO is encroaching on Sena ministers rights. We are equal partners in government, but we have to run from pillar to post to get funds, the Sena minister said, requesting anonymity. In local body polls, CM Fadnavis said BJP will make alliance with Sena only in BMC. It shows the BJP needs Sena in Mumbai, so it is ill-treating us where it can contest solo, he said. Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray said, Shinde is getting the taste of his own medicine. Friction between BJP and Sena is out in public.

PM Modi urges creation of Blue Book of learnings during visit to Bullet Train project in Gujarat

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited the under-construction Bullet Train Station in Surat, Gujarat, where he reviewed the progress of the MumbaiAhmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor. During the visit, he interacted with the team working on Indias first Bullet Train project and enquired about the pace of work, including adherence to speed and timetable targets. Workers allegedly assured him that the project was progressing smoothly without any difficulties. An engineer from Kerala shared her experience of working at the Noise Barrier Factory in Navsari, Gujarat, where robotic units are being deployed to weld rebar cages. Modi asked her how she personally perceived the experience of building Indias first Bullet Train, and what the team shared with their families about this historic achievement. She expressed pride in contributing to the nations first Bullet Train, describing it as a dream project and a proud moment for her family. Reflecting on the spirit of national service, the Prime Minister emphasised that when the feeling arises of working for the nation and contributing something new, it becomes a source of immense motivation. He drew a parallel with Indias space journey, recalling how the scientists who launched the countrys first satellite must have felt, and how today hundreds of satellites are being launched. Another employee, Shruti from Bengaluru, serving as Lead Engineering Manager, explained the rigorous design and engineering control processes. She highlighted that at every stage of execution, her team evaluates pros and cons, identifies solutions, and explores alternatives to ensure flawless implementation. Prime Minister Modi remarked that if the experiences gained here are recorded and compiled like a Blue Book, the country can move decisively towards large-scale implementation of Bullet Trains. He emphasised that India must avoid repeated experimentation and instead replicate the learnings from existing models. The Prime Minister highlighted that replication will only be meaningful if there is a clear understanding of why certain actions were taken; otherwise, he cautioned, replication may occur without purpose or direction. He suggested that maintaining such records could benefit future students and contribute to nation-building. We will dedicate our lives here and leave behind something valuable for the country, the Prime Minister affirmed. During an interaction, an employee expressed his commitment in heartfelt words through a poem, to which the Prime Minister lauded his dedication and responded with appreciation. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was present during the visit. The Prime Minister visited the Surat station to review the progress of the MumbaiAhmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR), one of Indias most ambitious infrastructure projects symbolising the nations leap into high-speed connectivity. The MAHSR spans approximately 508 kilometres, covering 352 km in Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and 156 km in Maharashtra. The corridor will connect major cities including Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Bilimora, Vapi, Boisar, Virar, Thane and Mumbai, marking a transformative step in Indias transport infrastructure. Built with advanced engineering techniques on a par with international standards, the project features 465 km, about 85% of the route, on viaducts, ensuring minimal land disturbance and enhanced safety. So far, 326 km of viaduct work has been completed, and 17 out of 25 river bridges have already been constructed. Upon completion, the Bullet Train will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to nearly two hours, revolutionising inter-city travel by making it faster, easier and more comfortable. The project is expected to boost business, tourism and economic activity along the entire corridor, catalysing regional development. The SuratBilimora section, covering around 47 km, is in an advanced stage of completion, with civil works and track-bed laying fully completed. The design of the Surat station draws inspiration from the citys world-renowned diamond industry, reflecting both elegance and functionality. The station has been designed with a strong focus on passenger comfort, featuring spacious waiting lounges, restrooms and retail outlets. It will also offer seamless multi-modal connectivity with the Surat Metro, city buses and the Indian Railways network.

Maharashtra ATS conducts searches in Thane, Pune in connection to techie with alleged Al Qaeda links

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra ATS has searched the premises of a teacher in Thane and another person in Pune in connection with the recent arrest of a software engineer for his alleged links with Al Qaeda and other banned outfits, officials said on Wednesday. The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) clarified that the searches were unrelated to the blast in Delhi on Monday that claimed 12 lives, but added that as part of the standard procedure, it was examining whether there was a possible Maharashtra link to the incident in the national capital. The teacher's house at Mumbra in Thane district was used for one of the meetings by the arrested Pune-based software engineer, Zubair Hangargekar, the officials said. The ATS nabbed Hangargekar (37) from Pune on October 27 for his alleged links with banned outfits, such as Al Qaeda and Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent, and for his suspected involvement in radicalisation activities. During the investigation, the ATS had found a Pakistani contact number saved on his old phone. While probing further, the ATS learned that Hangargekar had visited Mumbra in Thane for one of his meetings. Accordingly, the ATS officials visited the teacher's house on Tuesday and enquired about Hangargekar and his meeting, an official said. The teacher is neither an accused nor a witness in the case, he added. We searched the premises of two individuals, one in Kondhwa (in Pune) and another in Mumbra, and questioned them, another official said, adding that there was no connection between Hangargekar and the Delhi blast. Earlier this month, the ATS told a Pune court that Hangargekar allegedly used to deliver religious discourses aggressively in the city's Kondhwa area. During a house search there, the ATS seized mobile phones containing deleted PDF files titled 'Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and All Its Manifestations', it had said. They also recovered an Urdu translation of a speech delivered by the late Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden on Eid-ul-Fitr. In addition, a magazine titled Inspire was found, containing photographs of AK-47 training at the OSG Gun School and documents detailing the procedure to make an IED using acetone peroxide from an OSG bomb school, it told the court. The ATS had also said that during the searches, an old phone belonging to Hangargekar was recovered from one person. During the analysis of the contact list of the phone, five international phone numbers were found saved, including one from Pakistan, two from Saudi Arabia, and one each from Kuwait and Oman, it said. The call detail records of the phone, however, do not show any calls to these saved numbers, the ATS said.

India tells UNSC it has suffered from cross-border terror, illicit arms trafficking

UNITED NATIONS: India has suffered from cross-border terrorism carried out using illicit weapons trafficked across its borders, New Delhis envoy at the UN has said, in a thinly-veiled reference to Pakistan. Indias Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish stressed on Monday that the UN Security Council must have a zero-tolerance approach towards those who facilitate and sponsor the use and movement of such weapons. India has fought the scourge of terrorism for several decades and is therefore aware of the dangers posed by the diversion and illicit transfer of small arms and ammunition to armed non-State actors and terrorist groups, Harish said Monday at the UN Security Council Open Debate on Small Arms. Harishs remarks in the UN headquarters came hours after a deadly and high-intensity explosion rocked the Red Fort area in New Delhi and killed at least nine people while injuring many more. The explosion ripped through a slow-moving car at a traffic signal near the Red Fort metro station on Monday evening. India has suffered due to cross-border terrorism carried out using illicit weapons trafficked across our borders, including now through the use of drones, Harish said, in an apparent reference to Pakistan. The increase in the volume and sophistication of such arsenals reminds us that these groups cannot sustain themselves without being enabled, financed or supported, he added. India told the powerful UN Security Council that the illicit trafficking of small arms and related ammunition continues to be a major factor sustaining armed groups and terrorist organisations. The consistent access of such entities to weapons highlights the need for coordinated action to prevent their acquisition. The Security Council must continue to uphold a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and to those who facilitate, sponsor, finance or enable the use and movement of such weapons, Harish said. India also stressed that arms embargoes authorised by the Council are an important tool to restrict the flow of weapons into conflict zones and must be implemented consistently, objectively and without selectivity. Harish noted that the illicit trade, trafficking and diversion of small arms and light weapons remain a major threat to international peace and security. As a complex and multidimensional problem, it has a cross-cutting impact on development, security, humanitarian and socio-economic aspects, he said. Emphasising that India attaches high importance to preventing, combating and eradicating the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons, Harish said an integrated approach to their management requires addressing both the security and developmental dimensions. He outlined key elements that are critical for effective small arms and light weapons control, including national ownership through strong legislation and political commitment, and a standardised organisational structure for coordinated action. Effective data management to enable real-time tracing and accountability, risk management to prevent diversion and misuse, and security protocols and deterrence measures to strengthen border controls, and stockpile management, are also important for the control of these, he said. He pointed out that the report of the Secretary-General on Small arms and light weapons notes that the diversion and illicit trafficking of such weapons continue to sustain terrorist groups and armed organisations in several conflict-affected regions. It highlights that porous borders, weak stockpile security and cross-border trafficking networks enable the steady flow of such weapons, while improvised and craft-produced weapons further complicate tracing and accountability. India underscored that international cooperation is indispensable in preventing diversion, disrupting trafficking networks, improving customs and border coordination, and enabling timely intelligence and information exchange. Harish said India supports the redoubling of efforts at the national and global level to strengthen the implementation of the UN Programme of Action (PoA) and the International Tracing Instrument (ITI), including through national legislative measures and enforcement, export controls, information sharing and capacity building. He reiterated Indias firm commitment to preventing the misuse of small arms and light weapons by terrorist groups and thereby continues to contribute to the global fight against terrorism. The hunt for CNG: How Chennais auto and cab drivers battle daily shortages

Life behind the wheels in Chennai is a story of endless motion. Even as dawn creeps over the city, autorickshaw and cab drivers find themselves out and about. They, as always, arrive, pick us up, and drop us off at our destination, while we retreat into our own worlds. Most of us barely notice them anymore as our ears are plugged with earphones and our eyes fixed on glowing screens. The rides are silent, efficient, and fleeting. Its a stark contrast to the rides of not-so-long ago, when autorickshaws and cabs were little capsules of conversation, filled with chatter about traffic jams, winding routes, rising fuel prices, and even politics. Yet behind every tap and trip, there are stories untold of drivers whose struggles hum just beneath the surface of our quiet, app-booked journeys. Today, adding to the long list of challenges such as the sweltering heat, relentless Chennai rains, traffic, bad roads, immense competition with bike taxis and sheer exhaustion, is a new struggle: the hunt for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Their daily quest across the city in search of a quick refuel, drivers say, is testing both their patience and their fuel tanks. Srinivasan, an autorickshaw driver, says, I was driving an LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) auto until a couple of years ago because petrol wasnt profitable. But then, since CNG vehicles started picking up in Chennai, I sold the LPG vehicle and rented a CNG/petrol (bi-fuel) auto, with the hope that I would earn some extra hundreds every month. Vinod*, another autorickshaw driver in the city, also echoes similar sentiments. I was a lorry driver but the money wasnt enough to sustain myself, let alone my family. With similar hopes as Srinivasan, he used his savings and took out a loan to cover the overhead cost for a CNG/petrol (bi-fuel) autorickshaw. A similar and gradual shift was noticed by AK Abdul Gafoor and Sunil Gavaskar, two cab drivers, who note that today, 50-70% of cabs run on CNG in the city. But long queues at fuel stations, the constant fear of running out of gas, not getting as many rides regularly, and the rising cost of petrol made worse by bi-fuel vehicles that automatically switch from CNG to petrol due to CNG shortage are adding to all drivers woes, Vinod says. Supply and demand They first lament the shortage of CNG pumps at fuel stations, noting that their numbers havent kept pace with the growing demand for CNG in the city. There are only one or two pumps for CNG as against four to eight petrol and diesel pumps, depending on the size of the fuel stations. Those are not enough for the number of vehicles that need the gas in the city today and therefore, there are long queues. Although there are fuel stations exclusively for CNG, they are scarce and at many stations, they dont have pipeline connection and dispense the gas from lorries, rues Sunil, who spends a minimum of 30 minutes to fill gas every day, the longest being three hours. Abdul also recalls waiting in line for up to two hours, only to find, as his turn finally approached, that the station had run out of CNG. With fuel stations constantly overcrowded, both autorickshaw and cab drivers admit to experimenting with different routines filling gas in the dead of night, before dawn, or just past midnight. The irregular hours, they say, have taken a toll on their sleep. Late last year, Srinivasan says, I would go home by 9.30 pm after a long day. I would set an alarm for midnight only to refuel my vehicle. I would come back home and try to sleep again before starting an early day the next morning. As long queues for CNG began spilling onto roads this year especially during peak hours or along narrow main roads and those demarcated for metro construction fuel stations started setting fixed refuelling slots. Some now dispense CNG only after 11 pm, while others open briefly post-noon and close again before 3 pm. Sunil points out how structured and systematic these refuelling slots have become. At a petrol station in Tambaram, you have to get a token three hours prior and it will specify your time slot. We can only go at that time, wait in smaller queues nevertheless, and fill CNG. Due to these new rules, drivers, including him, are now torn between maximising their daily earnings and timing their day around CNG refuelling. Expensive alternatives Since Sunil spends long hours on the job, he is often forced to resort to filling petrol. He usually fills CNG around 4 am and if he accepts long rides, say to Kilambakkam or beyond ECR, or even intercity trips, his CNG will run out by afternoon. At that hour, few fuel stations are open for CNG, and those that are open tend to be crowded. I cant ask my customer to wait in line for hours, he explains, So I end up filling petrol instead, which becomes expensive. On days like those, he says he makes a maximum of `5,000, from which he ends up spending `2,000 on petrol alone. Abdul paints a grimmer picture. On a good day I may make `2,500, from which I spend `700 on CNG, around `200-300 at toll booths and then I am only left with `1,500 a day. I have my own vehicle and so my situation is still okay. Some of my friends are driving CNG vehicles on rent and the rent alone is `1,200 per day. Now imagine how those people must be running their families Beyond household expenses, drivers also spend a considerable amount on vehicle maintenance. Drivers admit that mechanic visits are becoming increasingly expensive since properly maintaining tyre pressure, changing the oil and CNG filters, are all key for a profitable mileage. And with bottleneck traffic, passing vehicles often leave scratches or even dents, furthering drivers expenses. Even in what they spend on fuel, many drivers feel cheated. Most say they pay around D680 to fill their CNG cylinders. While stations are supposed to pump gas at a pressure of about 200 kg/cm needed to properly compress the methane-rich fuel and store in a vehicles tank with enough volume and energy density many in Chennai, they claim, dispense it at only 180 kg/cm. As a result, less CNG gets stored in their tanks, leaving them with less fuel for the same price. Srinivasalu, who has also, in the past, driven LPG auto and is now driving a CNG, believes that petrol autos are more profitable given the circumstances. Setting aside their familial worries, he sums up all drivers situations in one line. When we have a tank full of gas, we dont get rides, and when we get rides, we dont get gas. *Name changed

Sporting ICF coaches, Keralas oldest long-haul train struggling to move on

KASARGOD: Around 3pm, the electric locomotive pulls into Kanhangad railway station, bringing in its wake the yellow and maroon liveried rakes of the 12602 Mangaluru Central-MGR Chennai Central Mail -- for its scheduled two-minute stop. The train bears history, as the first long-haul service to have chugged into Kerala the erstwhile Malabar presidency to be precise in 1867, 14 years after the countrys first passenger railroad made it from Bori Bunder to Thane. And it seems to be having trouble shaking off its legacy, as it continues to operate the old, rugged Integral Coach Factory (ICF) cars, while most other trains have moved on to modern Linke-Hofmann-Busch (LHB) coaches. This, despite the April 2018 policy decision to stop manufacturing conventional carriages and switch over completely to LHB coaches. Its services were numbered 1 and 2 (presently 12601 and 12602), running from Royapuram near Chennai to Chaliyam (present-day Beypore). It was named the Mangalore-Madras Mail in 1887 even though the train was extended to Mangalore only after the completion of the Netravati Bridge in 1907. The train moved people from Malabar and Mangalore to Chennai to establish shops, bakeries, eateries and enterprises, says R Prasanth Kumar, president of the Kasaragod District Rail Passengers Association. However, the train missed the boat when Indian Railways started taking to modern LHB coaches in 2000. Several trains, including those running between the same destinations, such as the 12685/12686 MGR Chennai Central-Mangaluru Central Superfast Express were provided LHB coaches. The Netravati bridge. Though named Mangalore Mail, the train went to Mangalore only in 1907 after the bridge was constructed that year Given its history, it should have been the first train to get LHB coaches, stresses Prasanth. LHB coaches are made of stainless steel and are lighter each weighing 35-40 tonnes compared with ICF coaches that are made of iron and weigh 45-50 tonnes. Despite repeated appeals, the officials at Southern Railway keep parroting that they dont have coaches, says Hanumantha Kamath of the West Coast Rail Yatri Development Committee in Mangaluru. Railway sources said the zonal authority allots LHB coaches when it receives them from coach-manufacturing plants in Perambur, Kapurthala and Raebareli. The rakes are provided to the divisions maintaining trains. Accordingly, they are replaced. Chennai Central - Mangaluru Central Mail would soon get LHB coaches, said an official with the Palakkad division.

Maharashtra Opposition holds 'march for truth' against voter list 'irregularities,' seeks immediate rectification

The Maha Vikas Aghadi, along with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, on Saturday held a protest march demanding the rectification of alleged irregularities in the voter list ahead of the local body polls in Maharashtra. Accusing the Election Commission of India (ECI) of turning a blind eye to the voters' list irregularities like multiple entries, wrongful deletions and additions, the Opposition stressed that the local body polls should be held only after rectifying the shortcomings. The 'Satyacha Morcha' (march for truth) started from Fashion Street in southern Mumbai in the afternoon and culminated at the BMC headquarters a kilometre away, with former chief minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, NCP (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar, MNS' Raj Thackeray and Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat, among others, taking part. Addressing the rally organised at the end of the march, Uddhav Thackeray said his name was uploaded on the 'Saksham' app from a fake mobile. I have a doubt that it was done to remove my name from the voters list, the former chief minister claimed. Reciting a dialogue from Sholay, he used the 'anaconda' jibe to target the BJP. Like the dialogue 'pachees kos door jab bachcha rota hai to maa kehti hai so jao nahi to Gabbar aa jayega', I want to tell you all to stay awake or else anaconda will come, Thackeray said. He said the opposition wants elections to be held as it is eager to defeat the ruling alliance. You steal my party, my symbol, my father's name and now you want to steal votes, Thackeray said in a swipe at the BJP-led ruling dispensation. Raj Thackeray alleged there are lakhs of dual voters in Mumbai as per the electoral rolls uploaded till July 1 this year. There are about 4500 voters who have voted in Kalyan rural assembly (in neighbouring Thane district) as well as Malabar Hill assembly (in south Mumbai). What is the need for elections with this bogus voter list? Clean it up and then hold polls, the MNS leader said. The local body polls have already been delayed for five years and there would be no problem if it was pushed back further by a year, he added. He asked party functionaries to check the electoral rolls minutely for dual voters. Whenever dual voters are caught, thrash them and then hand them over to the police, he added. Raj Thackeray also asked party workers to not be complacent just because he and Uddhav Thackeray have come together. We have joined hands for Marathi Hindus and the people of Maharashtra, the MNS chief said. NCP (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar said the morcha was an exemplary show of strength and unity for protecting the Constitution and parliamentary democracy. He said the BJP-led governments in Maharashtra and at the Centre were misusing power to target rivals. Senior Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat said the vote theft issue was first flagged by Rahul Gandhi and is now resonating across the country. During the assembly elections, our objection to the electoral rolls went unheeded. The voters list should be rectified and only then local body elections should be held, he asserted. Congress leaders Naseem Khan, Satej Patil and Bhai Jagtap, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule also took part in the protest mocha. (With inputs from PTI)

United MahaYuti to contest BMC polls

MUMBAI: With the Thackeray cousins, Uddhav and Raj, reportedly warming up to each other and hints of a possible alliance in the upcoming BMC elections, the BJP is disinclined to go solo and favours the MahaYuti constituents contesting together to avoid splitting Hindutva and pro-government votes. Atop BJP leader said at a recent Diwali gathering the party has decided to contest polls to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and three other municipal corporations as part of the MahaYuti in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The leader, authorised to take decisions, said the BJP had consulted the MahaYuti partners the Shiv Sena led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the NCP led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and all have agreed to contest together. If we contest separately, Hindutva and pro-establishment votes will get divided among the alliance partners. That division will benefit the Maha Vikas Aghadi, which plans to contest together. The Raj Thackeray-led MNS will also be a major factor, he said, requesting anonymity. Sources in the BJP said the alliance of the Thackeray cousins could unite the Marathi manoos, and minority communities may also join them to challenge the BJP. BJPs core vote base is upper-caste business communities, North Indians, and Gujaratis. Without Marathi votes, it is very difficult to win many seats in the BMC elections. The Thackerays claim to be champions of the Marathi manoos and play on language sentiments. We do not want to fall into that trap by going solo. BMC elections are crucial. In 2017, we nearly captured the BMC but fell short by a few seats. This time, we will go full force and use all resources, he added. Another senior BJP leader said decisions on alliances in the Thane Municipal Corporation would be taken by Eknath Shinde. In local body elections, local leaders say will also be considered. In rural local body elections, the BJP may go solo or let local leaders decide on alliances. We are united, and we must remain united if we want to stay in power and strengthen our network, he said, requesting anonymity.
