The hunt for CNG: How Chennais auto and cab drivers battle daily shortages
Life behind the wheels in Chennai is a story of endless motion. Even as dawn creeps over the city, autorickshaw and cab drivers find themselves out and about. They, as always, arrive, pick us up, and drop us off at our destination, while we retreat into our own worlds. Most of us barely notice them anymore as our ears are plugged with earphones and our eyes fixed on glowing screens. The rides are silent, efficient, and fleeting. Its a stark contrast to the rides of not-so-long ago, when autorickshaws and cabs were little capsules of conversation, filled with chatter about traffic jams, winding routes, rising fuel prices, and even politics. Yet behind every tap and trip, there are stories untold of drivers whose struggles hum just beneath the surface of our quiet, app-booked journeys. Today, adding to the long list of challenges such as the sweltering heat, relentless Chennai rains, traffic, bad roads, immense competition with bike taxis and sheer exhaustion, is a new struggle: the hunt for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Their daily quest across the city in search of a quick refuel, drivers say, is testing both their patience and their fuel tanks. Srinivasan, an autorickshaw driver, says, I was driving an LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) auto until a couple of years ago because petrol wasnt profitable. But then, since CNG vehicles started picking up in Chennai, I sold the LPG vehicle and rented a CNG/petrol (bi-fuel) auto, with the hope that I would earn some extra hundreds every month. Vinod*, another autorickshaw driver in the city, also echoes similar sentiments. I was a lorry driver but the money wasnt enough to sustain myself, let alone my family. With similar hopes as Srinivasan, he used his savings and took out a loan to cover the overhead cost for a CNG/petrol (bi-fuel) autorickshaw. A similar and gradual shift was noticed by AK Abdul Gafoor and Sunil Gavaskar, two cab drivers, who note that today, 50-70% of cabs run on CNG in the city. But long queues at fuel stations, the constant fear of running out of gas, not getting as many rides regularly, and the rising cost of petrol made worse by bi-fuel vehicles that automatically switch from CNG to petrol due to CNG shortage are adding to all drivers woes, Vinod says. Supply and demand They first lament the shortage of CNG pumps at fuel stations, noting that their numbers havent kept pace with the growing demand for CNG in the city. There are only one or two pumps for CNG as against four to eight petrol and diesel pumps, depending on the size of the fuel stations. Those are not enough for the number of vehicles that need the gas in the city today and therefore, there are long queues. Although there are fuel stations exclusively for CNG, they are scarce and at many stations, they dont have pipeline connection and dispense the gas from lorries, rues Sunil, who spends a minimum of 30 minutes to fill gas every day, the longest being three hours. Abdul also recalls waiting in line for up to two hours, only to find, as his turn finally approached, that the station had run out of CNG. With fuel stations constantly overcrowded, both autorickshaw and cab drivers admit to experimenting with different routines filling gas in the dead of night, before dawn, or just past midnight. The irregular hours, they say, have taken a toll on their sleep. Late last year, Srinivasan says, I would go home by 9.30 pm after a long day. I would set an alarm for midnight only to refuel my vehicle. I would come back home and try to sleep again before starting an early day the next morning. As long queues for CNG began spilling onto roads this year especially during peak hours or along narrow main roads and those demarcated for metro construction fuel stations started setting fixed refuelling slots. Some now dispense CNG only after 11 pm, while others open briefly post-noon and close again before 3 pm. Sunil points out how structured and systematic these refuelling slots have become. At a petrol station in Tambaram, you have to get a token three hours prior and it will specify your time slot. We can only go at that time, wait in smaller queues nevertheless, and fill CNG. Due to these new rules, drivers, including him, are now torn between maximising their daily earnings and timing their day around CNG refuelling. Expensive alternatives Since Sunil spends long hours on the job, he is often forced to resort to filling petrol. He usually fills CNG around 4 am and if he accepts long rides, say to Kilambakkam or beyond ECR, or even intercity trips, his CNG will run out by afternoon. At that hour, few fuel stations are open for CNG, and those that are open tend to be crowded. I cant ask my customer to wait in line for hours, he explains, So I end up filling petrol instead, which becomes expensive. On days like those, he says he makes a maximum of `5,000, from which he ends up spending `2,000 on petrol alone. Abdul paints a grimmer picture. On a good day I may make `2,500, from which I spend `700 on CNG, around `200-300 at toll booths and then I am only left with `1,500 a day. I have my own vehicle and so my situation is still okay. Some of my friends are driving CNG vehicles on rent and the rent alone is `1,200 per day. Now imagine how those people must be running their families Beyond household expenses, drivers also spend a considerable amount on vehicle maintenance. Drivers admit that mechanic visits are becoming increasingly expensive since properly maintaining tyre pressure, changing the oil and CNG filters, are all key for a profitable mileage. And with bottleneck traffic, passing vehicles often leave scratches or even dents, furthering drivers expenses. Even in what they spend on fuel, many drivers feel cheated. Most say they pay around D680 to fill their CNG cylinders. While stations are supposed to pump gas at a pressure of about 200 kg/cm needed to properly compress the methane-rich fuel and store in a vehicles tank with enough volume and energy density many in Chennai, they claim, dispense it at only 180 kg/cm. As a result, less CNG gets stored in their tanks, leaving them with less fuel for the same price. Srinivasalu, who has also, in the past, driven LPG auto and is now driving a CNG, believes that petrol autos are more profitable given the circumstances. Setting aside their familial worries, he sums up all drivers situations in one line. When we have a tank full of gas, we dont get rides, and when we get rides, we dont get gas. *Name changed

Sporting ICF coaches, Keralas oldest long-haul train struggling to move on
KASARGOD: Around 3pm, the electric locomotive pulls into Kanhangad railway station, bringing in its wake the yellow and maroon liveried rakes of the 12602 Mangaluru Central-MGR Chennai Central Mail -- for its scheduled two-minute stop. The train bears history, as the first long-haul service to have chugged into Kerala the erstwhile Malabar presidency to be precise in 1867, 14 years after the countrys first passenger railroad made it from Bori Bunder to Thane. And it seems to be having trouble shaking off its legacy, as it continues to operate the old, rugged Integral Coach Factory (ICF) cars, while most other trains have moved on to modern Linke-Hofmann-Busch (LHB) coaches. This, despite the April 2018 policy decision to stop manufacturing conventional carriages and switch over completely to LHB coaches. Its services were numbered 1 and 2 (presently 12601 and 12602), running from Royapuram near Chennai to Chaliyam (present-day Beypore). It was named the Mangalore-Madras Mail in 1887 even though the train was extended to Mangalore only after the completion of the Netravati Bridge in 1907. The train moved people from Malabar and Mangalore to Chennai to establish shops, bakeries, eateries and enterprises, says R Prasanth Kumar, president of the Kasaragod District Rail Passengers Association. However, the train missed the boat when Indian Railways started taking to modern LHB coaches in 2000. Several trains, including those running between the same destinations, such as the 12685/12686 MGR Chennai Central-Mangaluru Central Superfast Express were provided LHB coaches. The Netravati bridge. Though named Mangalore Mail, the train went to Mangalore only in 1907 after the bridge was constructed that year Given its history, it should have been the first train to get LHB coaches, stresses Prasanth. LHB coaches are made of stainless steel and are lighter each weighing 35-40 tonnes compared with ICF coaches that are made of iron and weigh 45-50 tonnes. Despite repeated appeals, the officials at Southern Railway keep parroting that they dont have coaches, says Hanumantha Kamath of the West Coast Rail Yatri Development Committee in Mangaluru. Railway sources said the zonal authority allots LHB coaches when it receives them from coach-manufacturing plants in Perambur, Kapurthala and Raebareli. The rakes are provided to the divisions maintaining trains. Accordingly, they are replaced. Chennai Central - Mangaluru Central Mail would soon get LHB coaches, said an official with the Palakkad division.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached assets worth Rs 3,084 crore linked to Reliance Group Chairman Anil Ambani in connection with a money laundering probe involving his group companies, official sources said on Monday. The attachments, issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), include Ambanis residence in Mumbais Pali Hill and several residential and commercial properties across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Hyderabad, Chennai, and East Godavari. A large plot at Reliance Centre on Maharaja Ranjit Singh Marg in Delhi is also among the seized assets. The case relates to alleged diversion and laundering of public funds raised by Reliance Home Finance Ltd. (RHFL) and Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd. (RCFL). Between 2017 and 2019, Yes Bank had invested Rs 2,965 crore in RHFL and Rs 2,045 crore in RCFLinvestments that later turned non-performing, with over Rs 3,300 crore outstanding by December 2019, the ED stated. The agency alleges financial irregularities and loan diversions amounting to over Rs 17,000 crore across multiple Reliance Group companies, including Reliance Infrastructure. Ambani was questioned by the ED in August, following extensive searches at 35 locations linked to his firms and associates in Mumbai in July. The Maha Vikas Aghadi, along with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, on Saturday held a protest march demanding the rectification of alleged irregularities in the voter list ahead of the local body polls in Maharashtra. Accusing the Election Commission of India (ECI) of turning a blind eye to the voters' list irregularities like multiple entries, wrongful deletions and additions, the Opposition stressed that the local body polls should be held only after rectifying the shortcomings. The 'Satyacha Morcha' (march for truth) started from Fashion Street in southern Mumbai in the afternoon and culminated at the BMC headquarters a kilometre away, with former chief minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, NCP (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar, MNS' Raj Thackeray and Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat, among others, taking part. Addressing the rally organised at the end of the march, Uddhav Thackeray said his name was uploaded on the 'Saksham' app from a fake mobile. I have a doubt that it was done to remove my name from the voters list, the former chief minister claimed. Reciting a dialogue from Sholay, he used the 'anaconda' jibe to target the BJP. Like the dialogue 'pachees kos door jab bachcha rota hai to maa kehti hai so jao nahi to Gabbar aa jayega', I want to tell you all to stay awake or else anaconda will come, Thackeray said. He said the opposition wants elections to be held as it is eager to defeat the ruling alliance. You steal my party, my symbol, my father's name and now you want to steal votes, Thackeray said in a swipe at the BJP-led ruling dispensation. Raj Thackeray alleged there are lakhs of dual voters in Mumbai as per the electoral rolls uploaded till July 1 this year. There are about 4500 voters who have voted in Kalyan rural assembly (in neighbouring Thane district) as well as Malabar Hill assembly (in south Mumbai). What is the need for elections with this bogus voter list? Clean it up and then hold polls, the MNS leader said. The local body polls have already been delayed for five years and there would be no problem if it was pushed back further by a year, he added. He asked party functionaries to check the electoral rolls minutely for dual voters. Whenever dual voters are caught, thrash them and then hand them over to the police, he added. Raj Thackeray also asked party workers to not be complacent just because he and Uddhav Thackeray have come together. We have joined hands for Marathi Hindus and the people of Maharashtra, the MNS chief said. NCP (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar said the morcha was an exemplary show of strength and unity for protecting the Constitution and parliamentary democracy. He said the BJP-led governments in Maharashtra and at the Centre were misusing power to target rivals. Senior Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat said the vote theft issue was first flagged by Rahul Gandhi and is now resonating across the country. During the assembly elections, our objection to the electoral rolls went unheeded. The voters list should be rectified and only then local body elections should be held, he asserted. Congress leaders Naseem Khan, Satej Patil and Bhai Jagtap, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule also took part in the protest mocha. (With inputs from PTI)

United MahaYuti to contest BMC polls
MUMBAI: With the Thackeray cousins, Uddhav and Raj, reportedly warming up to each other and hints of a possible alliance in the upcoming BMC elections, the BJP is disinclined to go solo and favours the MahaYuti constituents contesting together to avoid splitting Hindutva and pro-government votes. Atop BJP leader said at a recent Diwali gathering the party has decided to contest polls to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and three other municipal corporations as part of the MahaYuti in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The leader, authorised to take decisions, said the BJP had consulted the MahaYuti partners the Shiv Sena led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the NCP led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and all have agreed to contest together. If we contest separately, Hindutva and pro-establishment votes will get divided among the alliance partners. That division will benefit the Maha Vikas Aghadi, which plans to contest together. The Raj Thackeray-led MNS will also be a major factor, he said, requesting anonymity. Sources in the BJP said the alliance of the Thackeray cousins could unite the Marathi manoos, and minority communities may also join them to challenge the BJP. BJPs core vote base is upper-caste business communities, North Indians, and Gujaratis. Without Marathi votes, it is very difficult to win many seats in the BMC elections. The Thackerays claim to be champions of the Marathi manoos and play on language sentiments. We do not want to fall into that trap by going solo. BMC elections are crucial. In 2017, we nearly captured the BMC but fell short by a few seats. This time, we will go full force and use all resources, he added. Another senior BJP leader said decisions on alliances in the Thane Municipal Corporation would be taken by Eknath Shinde. In local body elections, local leaders say will also be considered. In rural local body elections, the BJP may go solo or let local leaders decide on alliances. We are united, and we must remain united if we want to stay in power and strengthen our network, he said, requesting anonymity.

Maharashtra farmers facing 'black' Diwali due to paltry aid by 'corrupt' govt: Opposition
MUMBAI: Opposition Congress and NCP (SP) on Friday claimed it would be a lack Diwali for farmers in Maharashtra who are facing a crisis due to rain and flood-induced crop losses, and hit out at the corrupt Mahayuti government for its meagre aid and false promises. Nationalist Congress Party (SP) state president Shashikant Shinde said the BJP-led government has urned hopes and aspirations of farmers with false assurances and forced flood and rain-affected people to observe a 'black Diwali this year. To protest against the power drunk Mahayuti alliance and to make the rulers aware of the farmers' plight and highlight their demands, day-long hunger strikes were held by NCP (SP) workers and leaders outside collector's office in every district, a protest coming on the eve of the festival of lights beginning with Dhanteras on Saturday. Shinde, who took part in a hunger strike outside Satara district collector's office in western Maharashtra, maintained the state-wide protest was meant to denounce the Mahayuti government for its neglect of farmers. The three-party government in Maharashtra, which boasts of being the 'most progressive state,' has mocked the food providers by announcing a meagre aid for them, he said. Those who promised to make the '7/12 extract clean', clean', clean' (clear land title) did not even utter a word about loan waivers. On the contrary, farmers' earnest demand to declare a 'wet drought' was met with disdain, the former state minister opined. Feeling helpless in the face of dire circumstances, the farmer embraced death, but the cries of his family went unheard by deaf rulers intoxicated with power, the MLC remarked in a scathing attack on the ruling coalition. Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Vijay Wadettiwar noted that though the Devendra Fadnavis-led government has announced a relief package of more than Rs 31,000 crore for farmers, the actual relief was limited to Rs 1,800 crore. This translates into just Rs 10,000 aid per hectare, the former minister claimed. Speaking to reporters in Nagpur, Wadettiwar alleged the government has betrayed farmers by offering a meagre financial assistance after promising a massive relief package. The government has announced a Rs 31,000-crore package claiming it would provide substantial help to rain-affected farmers. However, till date, government resolutions (GRs) worth barely Rs 1,800 crore have been issued. The assistance of Rs 10,000 per hectare is paltry and amounts to deceiving farmers, he stated. This year will be a black Diwali for Maharashtra's farmers, he remarked. According to Wadettiwar, 253 talukas were severely hit by heavy rains between June and September. The government had assured aid before Diwali, but the relief package strictly follows NDRF (National Disaster Response Fund) norms with no additional support. Farmers whose land was washed away will receive compensation over three years -- how will they survive till then? he asked. The Congress MLA pointed out that cotton procurement has yet to begin as the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has not granted approval for the process due to unrealistic conditions, which, he warned, could push farmers towards ruin. Soybean crops have been destroyed, and their market prices are abysmally low. The government must stop harassing farmers, he added. He criticized the government's decision to place Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) under the direct control of the state Marketing Minister. This move will enable the minister to exploit the system. APMCs handle transactions worth crores, and by removing elected boards, the government is committing a grave injustice, Wadettiwar alleged. As part of the state-wide agitation, NCP (SP) workers staged a protest in Thane to highlight the plight of farmers. Held outside the Thane district collectorate, the protest was led by NCP (SP) district president Manoj Pradhan under the guidance of the party's general secretary Jitendra Awhad. Protesters wore black clothes and ribbons, and raised slogans against the Mahayuti government, accusing it of neglect and false promises. In the name of relief packages, this government has cheated rain-hit farmers. Even the promised Diwali aid hasn't arrived. There's no word of a loan waiver, said Pradhan. The Opposition party said crops such as soybean, tur, cotton, sugarcane, moong, and urad were destroyed, while livestock was also lost in floods. Yet, panchnamas (damage surveys) remain pending and no meaningful compensation has been provided. The NCP (SP) warned of intensified agitation if the government failed to act on its promises. We will take to the streets and force the government to deliver, Pradhan asserted.

Maharashtra opposition meets state election chief ahead of local polls, raises six key concerns
MUMBAI: Opposition delegations led by former union minister Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray, Raj Thackeray, and Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat met the Maharashtra state election commissioner on Tuesday and echoed the allegation of Congress leader Rahul Gandhis vote chori and raised six pertinent questions. The delegation also asked the election commission to provide the voters verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) along with an electronic voting machine (EVM). If the election commission is unable to do that, then Asias richest civic body election should be conducted through ballot papers. Opposition delegation met Maharashtra state chief election commissioner S Choklingam at Mantralaya and put forth the six prominent demands and highlighting that the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi raised the vote chori issue as well. It stated that it is the duty of the election commission to reinstall the trust and faith of the people in the election process and should not succumb to any pressure. The demands read out that between the Lok Sabha and Maharashtra state assembly election in the year 2024, several voters' names were added and deleted as well. The list of these new voters should be provided to the Opposition, and it should also be uploaded on the state election commission website. It is the right of the citizens to know this basic information. The second demand of the delegation was after the Maharashtra state election, the voter list was published and it was updated in July 2025. This updated list should be provided to every political front that demands it. Why is this list not given even after several demands? What is hidden in this list that the Election Commission wants to keep as a secret? The third demand is that the state election commission announced that for the local body election, the July 2025 voters list will be considered, but what about those who complete 18 years old after that date? Why should these new eligible voters, the youth should wait for the next five years to get registered as voters? The vote registrations should be an ongoing, continuous process, and no one should be denied or deprived of exercising their voting rights in a democratic setup. The fourth demand by the Election Commission raised the duplicate voter registration and voting. It stated that in the Mumbai metropolitan region, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, and extended suburbs, several migrants are registered voters and at the same time, they are also voters back in their respective states. Such kind of voters exercise their voting rights twice, which is illegal as per law; therefore Election Commission in Bihar should start the D registration and deregister these voters. The delegations fifth demand was, the Election Commission declared that the VVPAT would not be used for municipal corporation elections because of citing reason that they do not have enough EVMS that connect to VVPAT. The election was delayed for more than four years, so why did the election commission not prepare in the last four months to address these shortcomings? Then, the people will trust the voting process if it has shortcomings. The sixth demand, which includes the Election Commission, said that in multiple wards in corporation elections, the VVPAT cannot be used. If this is the case, the BMC and other municipal corporation elections should be conducted by using the paper ballot, not the EVM.

India slams Pakistan at UNSC, says 'bombs its own people, sanctions genocidal mass rape'
India on Monday condemned Pakistan for raising the Kashmir issue at the UN Security Council and accused it of historic atrocities, including bombing its own citizens and orchestrating mass rape during the 1971 crackdown in then-East Pakistan. Speaking during an open debate on Women, Peace and Security, India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, said Pakistan's military committed systematic genocide and sanctioned the mass rape of over 400,000 women during Operation Searchlight in 1971. Every year, we are unfortunately fated to listen to the delusional tirade of Pakistan against my country, especially on Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian territory they covet, Harish said. A country that bombs its own people and conducts systematic genocide can only attempt to distract the world with misdirection and hyperbole. Harish's comments came in response to Pakistan's representative raising the Kashmir issue, claiming the exclusion of Kashmiri women from the UNSC agenda undermined its credibility. India slams Pakistan at UNSC, calls for serious cost on states promoting cross-border terrorism India hit back sharply, accusing Pakistan of exploiting the forum to spread propaganda. The world sees through Pakistans narrative, Harish asserted. The envoy reaffirmed India's strong record on the Women, Peace and Security agenda, citing its pioneering role in UN peacekeeping. He highlighted that as early as the 1960s, India deployed women medical officers in UN missions in the Congo, one of the first countries to do so. Indias peacekeeping legacy stands out not just for its scale but for recognizing women as indispensable agents of peace, he said. He also referenced the International Conference on Women Peacekeepers from the Global South, hosted by India in February 2025. The event gathered women peacekeepers from 35 countries to develop strategies for enhancing their roles in future missions, tackling issues from sexual exploitation to the use of technology. THANE: Police have registered a case against the chairman and staff of a co-operative credit society for allegedly cheating a group of farmers of Rs 14.59 lakh by promising them a loan for a joint land purchase in Navi Mumbai, officials said on Tuesday. A group of 14 farmers had jointly purchased a plot of land at Nevali in Navi Mumbai for Rs 3.46 crore. To complete the payment for the land, they had approached the cooperative credit society for a loan. The credit society chairman assured the farmers of a Rs 6 crore loan (for payment and plot development). But, he allegedly demanded Rs 24 lakh as processing fees and other charges and collected Rs 23 lakh from the farmers, an official from CBD police station said. The farmers' representative was shown screenshots of loan approval letters, demand drafts and related documents, but the promised loan was not disbursed, he said. In the meantime, other staff members of the credit society also demanded money on various pretexts and allegedly took Rs 4.09 lakh from them, the official said. On being confronted, the credit society chairman returned Rs 12.5 lakh but failed to refund the remaining amount, he said, adding the alleged fraud took place between August and October 2024. US national, two others arrested for 'wrongful conversion' in Maharashtra's Thane
MUMBAI: A US national and two Indian citizens were arrested by Maharashtra Police for allegedly attempting to convert tribal villagers to Christianity and thereby insulting Hindu religion. Upon receiving a complaint of wrongful conversion, the Bhiwandi taluka police on late Friday arrested 58-year-old US national James Watson, Sainath Ganpati Sarpe (42) of Palghar, and Manoj Govind Kolha (35) of Chimbipada, Bhiwandi. The US national was in India on a business visa. All three have been accused of allegedly performing a baptism. They have also been accused of allegedly performing black magic and 'luring' villagers to convert to Christianity. Thane Deputy Police Commissioner Rahul Zalte confirmed the incident and said that the court has granted the 14-day magistrate's custody, and they are probing the case. All three accused have been booked under Sections 299 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings) and 302 (intentionally hurting religious sentiments) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Foreigners Act (for misusing visa norms), and Maharashtra's 2013 anti-black magic law. The local court first granted the two days of police custody and now 14 days of magistrate custody, said Zalte. According to the local police, the accused arranged the prayer meet in Chimbipada village in Bhiwadni taluka in Thane district on Friday. The case was filed based on a complaint by a local resident, Ravinath Bhurkut. Police said that on Friday, a prayer meet was held outside the house of Manoj Kolha, where 30 to 40 villagers had gathered. During this meeting, Watson read holy books and claimed that the people will attain moksha through Christianity, not Hinduism. He allegedly urged everyone to get baptised and read the holy book daily, as well as attend the prayer regularly.
