Trumps Big, Beautiful Bill is a middle finger to US solar energy
The so-called Big, Beautiful Bill will, if passed, make sweeping changes to the US clean energy market. While some of the worst provisions affecting the industry were stripped out during Senate proceedings earlier this week, its still pretty bad. In fact, the current language of the bill might as well be a middle figure to the domestic solar manufacturing industry. As it stands, the bill guts many of the clean energy programs of Joe Biden's signature 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. That includes killing off incentives for domestic and utility-scale solar power as well as the Clean Electricity Production Credit . Even worse, the bill axes the Domestic Content bonus that incentivized the use of US-made gear. There were a number of provisions that did not survive its journey through the Senate, like the excise tax on renewable energy. As CBS News reported, the levy would have imposed an additional charge on projects that used materials from foreign countries. As CNN explained, this would have cut renewable energy projects in favor of extending the life of coal and gas turbine plants. Rob Gardner is Vice President of Congressional and Regulatory Affairs for SEMA, the Solar Energy Manufacturers for America coalition. He walked me through the bill, explaining the effects of the changes for the US solar industry. A positive is that it maintains production tax credits for manufacturers of clean energy components, he said. One tweak from an earlier version of the bill was the speed at which the existing tax credits would be withdrawn. As it stands, projects that are already approved will qualify for the present regime, as will any project beginning construction before June 2026. Basically, a year after enactment [companies have] to begin construction on utility-scale solar projects to receive the full amount of the credit, said Gardner. And, according to 70512 (4)(a) those plants will need to be placed in service no later than December 31, 2027. The bigger issue, however, is that the bill creates uncertainty for long-term demand for US products, according to Gardner. Put simply, American-made solar panels are more expensive than their Chinese counterparts due to higher manufacturing costs. By removing the incentives, including the Domestic Content bonus, the US is opening the door for Chinese-made alternatives. Gardner added after the tax credits that incentivize domestic production and consumption expire, you will see a flood of Chinese product [in the market.] The US's Environmental Information Administration projects that the US total domestic energy consumption will grow by almost two percent in the next year. A slowdown in new energy additions is the last thing the US needs, especially as renewables made up almost 90 percent of all new power generation capacity in 2024. But its likely that even with all of the changes in the bill, solar will remain the biggest technology used to implement new power generation capacity. Abigail Ross Hopper, CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association pulls no punches in her statement . She said the bill undermines the very foundation of Americas manufacturing comeback. Hopper added that families will face higher electric bills, factories will shut down, Americans will lose their jobs and our electric grid will grow weaker. Jason Grumet, CEO of the American Clean Power Association described the bill as a step backward for American energy policy and an intentional effort to undermine one of the fastest-growing sources of electric power. Environmental groups also believe the bills passing marks a dark day in the worlds fight against climate change. Greenpeace USA Deputy Climate Program Director John Nol, said in a statement that this is a vote that will live in infamy for its role in doling out fossil fuel industry handouts. Environmental Defense Funds Vice President for Political and Government Affairs Joanna Slaney agreed. She said that the bill is effectively cutting off supply of cheap energy right when the US needs it most. In contrast, the bill offers a 10-year reprieve from paying a fee on wasteful methane pollution, a gas significantly more harmful than carbon dioxide to the environment. Research by clean energy company Cleanview suggests the bill may jeopardize up to 600GW of new renewable energy capacity. This is because of the tight deadlines the bill imposes to qualify for the existing credits, which again, need to begin construction before June 2026. That 600GW figure includes solar farms and battery storage projects in California and Texas that would need to be rushed to get working. Bezos-funded satellite tracking methane emissions loses power in space
MethaneSAT, the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) methane-tracking satellite backed by the Bezos Earth Fund, is lost in space . Its ground team lost contact with the spacecraft on June 20 but tried to reestablish a connection until it learned in the morning of July 1 that MethaneSAT had lost power altogether. The team believes that the satellite is likely not recoverable. MethaneSAT collected data on methane emissions that have previously been untrackable in an effort to combat climate change. Methane is the second largest contributor to global warming after carbon dioxide, with agriculture, fossil fuels and waste decomposition being the largest sources . In its announcement, the MethaneSAT team said that the spacecraft's observations have given us critical insight about the distribution and volume of methane being released from oil and gas production regions. Thanks to the satellite, scientists have also developed the capability to interpret the measurements from space and translate them into volumes of methane released. That knowledge can be used in future missions. EDF developed the mission, which launched in March 2024, to hold the countries who previously pledged to slash their methane emissions accountable. It created Google Cloud-powered algorithms to calculate and monitor methane emitted in certain regions with held from Harvard and Smithsonian scientists. While the satellite itself is gone, the MethaneSAT team vowed to work with other scientists to leverage the algorithms and software developed for the project. The team will also continue processing the data the satellite had sent back. Now, the same Sapkal is finding it difficult to place his confidants at key posts in the state Congress unit. He recently decided to remove incumbent Maha Cong social media head Vishal Muttemwar and replace with his person of choice. SC praises Bombay High Court on demolition of illegal buildings in Thane
NEW DELHI: Lauding the Bombay High Courts courageous stand, the Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to interfere with the High Court order directing the demolition of 17 structures built illegally on green zones in Maharashtras Thane. On June 12, the Bombay High Court said any unauthorised construction would be required to be demolished. Challenging the order, Danish Zaheer Siddiqui has moved to the top court. The top court, while declining his request, asked him to appeal to the high court for review and relief. A two-judge vacation bench of the top court, headed by Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manohan, referred to the Bombay High Courts explicit finding that the underworld was involved in illegal constructions, happening in collusion with municipal bodies. While refusing to hear Siddiquis appeal, the top court said, Please feel for your city. Otherwise, everything will be encroached upon. Next, your Bombay will be encroached upon. Thats all that remains to be done. Please feel for your city. Otherwise, everything will be encroached upon. For once, the Bombay High Court has taken a very courageous stand, and we appreciate it. Appreciating the high courts order, the top court bench said, Kudos to the high court for taking the right decision. See, you encroached on some third partys land and built a property without obtaining any permits or sanctions. There is no rule of law, and please see, these are persons with underworld connections. The bench further observed that the construction was undertaken without any permission from the planning authority and that, too, by occupying land belonging to a third party. The apex court said the illegal construction could not have been brought to light had an innocent woman not come forward, claiming that her land was occupied and buildings had been constructed on it. Siddiqui claimed that out of the 17 buildings, eight had been demolished, rendering a minimum of 400 families homeless. He claimed to be one of the purchasers of a flat in one of the 17 buildings and argued that the high court issued a carte blanche (blank document) direction, empowering the Thane Municipal Corporation to proceed with demolition without awaiting any further orders. The top court, however, said, We express no opinion in the matter. After hearing the matter for some time, the senior counsel (for Siddiqui) seeks liberty to withdraw the application and with liberty to approach the High Court. Also in top court Interim stay on Thane dargah demolition The Court on Tuesday ordered a weeks status quo on the demolition of a dargah in Thane. The bench directed an interim stay of seven days on anti-encroachment exercises and ordered the dargah trust to move Bombay High Court for recall of the order directing demolition of the structure. The Court was hearing a plea by the trust against the March 10 HC order, directing demolition.

Congress attacks Modi Govt for abstaining on Gaza ceasefire resolution in UN
NEW DELHI: The Congress on Saturday attacked the Centre for abstaining from voting during the UNGA resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza and alleged that India's foreign policy is in shambles. The opposition party also demanded answers from the government on whether India has abandoned its principled stand against war, against genocide, and for justice. It is now increasingly evident that our Foreign Policy is in shambles. Perhaps, PM Modi must now take a call on his EAM's repeated blunders and set some accountability, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said. In a post on X, he said that 149 countries voted for a UNGA resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza while India was only one of the 19 countries that abstained. We virtually stand isolated by this step, he added. Kharge further stated that the Congress had condemned the attacks by Hamas on the people of Israel on October 8 2023. We have consistently condemned the indiscriminate actions that included a siege of the Gaza Strip and bombings in it. 60,000 people have died and there is a widespread and horrific humanitarian crisis. Have we abandoned India's consistent stand advocating for a ceasefire, peace, and dialogue in the Middle East and West Asia? he asked. Kharge affirmed that this position is deeply rooted in India's long-standing tradition of non-alignment and moral diplomacy, through which the nation has always promoted justice and peace in global conflicts. Noting that on October 19 2023, the Congress called for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza, he said, India cannot stand by silently or passively while the region faces horrific violence, humanitarian catastrophe, and increasing instability. Echoing similar sentiments, AICC general secretary, organisation, KC Venugopal said India always stood for peace, justice, and human dignity. But today, India stands alone as the only country in South Asia, BRICS, and SCO to abstain on a UNGA resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza. 60,000 killed. Most of them women and children. Thousands starving. International aid blocked. A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding, he said in a post on X, questioning if India has abandoned its principled stand against war and genocide. Venugopal called on the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to explain what had changed in the last six months that led India from supporting a ceasefire to abstaining from the vote. Training guns on the Narendra Modi-led government, he accused the Centre of having little regard for Jawaharlal Nehru's legacy and questioned why it had abandoned Atal Bihari Vajpayee's principled stance on Palestine. Emphasising that India has long been a principled voice for ceasefire, peace, and dialogue in the Middle East, Venugopal reiterated that India has historically championed the cause of justice and humanitarian values in global conflicts. At a time when the region is witnessing unspeakable violence, humanitarian collapse, and growing instability, India cannot afford to remain silent or passive, the Congress leader noted. Similarly, Congress MP from Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also expressed her disappointment at India's stance at the UN. This is a tragic reversal of our anti-colonial legacy. In fact, not only are we standing silent as Mr Netanyahu annihilates an entire nation, we are cheering on as his government attacks Iran and assassinates its leadership in flagrant violation of its sovereignty and complete contravention of all international norms, she said in a post on X. How can we, as a nation, just abandon the principles of our constitution, and the values of our freedom struggle that led the way for an international arena based on peace and humanity? she asked. Noting that there is no justification for this, she added that true global leadership demands the courage to defend justice, and India has shown this courage unfailingly in the past. In a world that is increasingly divisive, we must reclaim our voice for humanity and stand fearlessly for truth and non-violence, Vadra asserted. AICC media department head Pawan Khera also said that India's UN abstention on the Gaza ceasefire comes as an act of staggering moral cowardice - a shameful betrayal of our anti-colonial legacy and the values of our own freedom struggle. He recalled how India once stood tall for Palestine and became the first non-Arab state to recognise the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1974, inviting Yasser Arafat to attend the 7th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit held in New Delhi in 1983 and formally recognised Palestinian statehood in 1988. We stood for justice not as strategy, but as principle. But today, that proud legacy lies in ruins, he said. The abstention is also a craven U-turn from India's December 2024 vote in the favour of a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, proving that the Modi government remembers nothing, stands for nothing, and chases only photo-ops even if they involve blood-soaked handshakes, Khera added. As Israel sets West Asia ablaze - bombing Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and now Iran - Modi's complicity has abandoned India's conscience. The world does not listen to the nation that speaks loudest, it listens to a nation that speaks with clarity, courage and conscience. And India must never surrender that voice, his post on X read. The 193-member UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to adopt the resolution introduced by Spain that demanded an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire. India was among the 19 nations that abstained, while 12 countries voted against the resolution, which got 149 votes in favour. India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish said that the resolution comes against the backdrop of the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza.

With plane crash, family's excitement for flight attendant Roshni's wedding turns into despair
THANE: Flight attendant Roshni Songhare was about to add a new chapter in her life as she was set to tie the knot with a merchant navy officer next year, and her excited family members had started making preparations for it. But all that excitement turned into despair after the news of the London-bound Air India flight crashing in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon broke. Roshni, 26, was one of the crew members on board that flight. This development plunged the Songhare family living on Rajaji Path in Dombivli town of Maharashtra's Thane district into numbing silence. Roshni had left her home three days ago for duty excited, as always, to serve on international flights - this time from Ahmedabad to London. But the fatal crash of the aircraft snuffed out her dreams and left her family members - 50-year-old father Rajendra, mother Shobha and younger brother Vignesh completely shattered. She was the heartbeat of this home. We were getting her engaged in November and married in March, a close relative told reporters in a trembling voice. Time played cruelly with her, he said. A native of Mandangad in coastal Ratnagiri district, the Songhare family had moved to Mumbai for work and shifted to Dombivli two years ago. Roshni, a bright and determined girl, was the family's pride and pillar. Her father worked tirelessly to educate both his children, and Roshni, inspired by the skies, pursued and completed a flight attendant course. She began her career with SpiceJet and later joined Air India, where she opted for international assignments relishing every airborne mile, her family members said. She was so happy to be flying again. We were all looking forward to her wedding. Everything was going right, said her uncle Praveen Sukhdere, who has rushed Dombivli to be with the grieving family. After the news about the plane crash flashed, the family members immediately tried to contact her. But when there was no response, panic gripped. Her father and brother immediately rushed to Ahmedabad, holding on to hope. Roshni's fianc, a highly educated officer in the merchant navy from Guhagar taluka, currently living in Thane, had met her through a family acquaintance. She was finally getting everything she had worked so hard for, a neighbour said tearfully. Apart from being a flight attendant, Roshni was also a social media influencer with over 54,000 followers on Instagram. Her account, which was once a reflection of celebration of her journey, is now filled with condolence messages, with one reading, You flew high, Roshni. You just flew a little too far. From a little girl with stars in her eyes to an international flight attendant with wings of hope, Roshni's journey inspired many, her close relatives said. Plane plummets to Earth, a phone call that never came
NEW DELHI: An old and ailing father in Mumbai realises its futile to wait for his son to come home and take care of him. The son, Pilot-in-Command Sumit Sabharwal, died in Thursdays Air India plane crash. He phoned his dad before the flight to London. Ill call you once I reach London. He barely made it to the perimeter of the airport before the Dreamliner plummeted to Earth. Three days back, the younger Sabharwal had a heart-to-heart chat with his dad. The conversation must have thrilled the old man, who lived alone after his wife passed away a couple of years ago. Sumit told him that he wanted to stop flying and take care of his father. The son was a bachelor. Friends and relatives dropped in to see the father all day. Sabharwal must be 55 or 56 years, said Captain CS Randhawa, president of the Federation of Indian Pilots Association, recalling how he took care of his father. Sabharwal, a highly experienced pilot, was a Line Training Captain with more than 8,000 hours of flying experience. He was himself involved in safety checks of flights, Captain Randhawa said. The Association has around 6,000 members, and Sabharwal was one of them. We push a lot for flight safety, and he was one of us, he said. The co-pilot, Clive Kunder, had over 1,000 hours of flying experience, Captain Randhawa said. On Thursday evening, it emerged that Kunder, the first officer operating on the flight, was 12th Fail actor Vikrant Masseys cousin. My heart breaks for the families & loved ones of the ones who lost their lives in the unimaginably tragic air crash in Ahmedabad today, the actor posted on Instagram. It pains even more to know that my uncle, Clifford Kunder, lost his son, Clive Kunder, who was the 1st officer operating on that fateful flight. May God give strength to you and your family, uncle, he added. Co-pilot Deepak Pathak is also from Maharashtra. He is from Badlapur in Thane district. His colleagues say he was experienced in long-haul flying and was quite efficient at work. His family refused to believe that Deepak died in the crash. His mother said that they are calling Deepak, and his phone is ringing, so they firmly believe that he is alive. We are still hopeful that Deepak is alive and he will come back. Deepak used to make the first call home before going anywhere, and he spoke with his mother before leaving for London as a co-pilot, said the co-pilot family member. Two of the crew members were also from Maharashtra. Arpan Mahadik is from Goregaon, Mumbai, while Roshani Songhare is from Dombivali. Mahadik is a relative of NCP state president Sunil Tatkare. Soon after the names of the pilot and crew flashed in the media, Shiv Sena MLA Dilip Lande rushed to the house of Sumit Sabharwal in Powai and met the 88-year-old father, Pushkraj Sabharwal. Lande said the father was waiting for his daughter and two grandchildren to come home to him.
