Dahi Handi festival in Maharashtra witnesses historic world record in human pyramid formation
MUMBAI: Maharashtra celebrated the Dahi Handi festival by making a historic world record with the formation of a ten-tier Govindahuman pyramid in Thane. During the Dahi Handi festival, one Govinda died while tying the rope to climb for Govindas at Mankhurd, while 30 Govindas got injured in different parts of the city in Mumbai. The historic world record was achieved by Jogeshwari's Konkan Nagar Govinda Pathak by forming a 10-tier human pyramid at the Sanskruti Dahi Handi festival in Thane, hosted by Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik. It was this year's first 10-storey pyramid. This pathak also incorporated a Char Ekka' formation. It's a formation where four participants are stacked atop a single person. This feat requires remarkable strength, balance, and coordination. The transport minister, Sarnaik, congratulated the team, saying, This is not a record, it's a sign of focus, teamwork, and organisation. The Govindas have indeed shown skill and commitment. The minister also awarded Rs 25 lakh as a cash prize to this mandal that made the world record by forming a tenth-tierhuman pyramid. Earlier, the ninth-tier formation of a human pyramid was done by Jai Jawan Mitra Mandal Govinda for five consecutive years. But Jogeshwari's Konkan Nagar Govinda Pathak, by forming a 10-tier human pyramid, broke all previous records. Raut Says No Power In Country Can Defeat United Thackerays
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut announced on Friday that Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray are considering contesting the upcoming municipal elections in Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, and other cities together.
MUMBAI: After Raj Thackeray asserted the Thackeray brand in Mumbai, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said that both the Thackeray brothers-- Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray--after joining hands over the language row, are set to join hands politically for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and other municipal corporation elections. Sanjay Raut said that Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS are in talks to tie for the upcoming BMC, Nasik, Thane, and other municipal corporation elections. He said that no one stops both brothers from coming together and fighting for the Marathi manoos. Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS, both not only contest the upcoming local body including the BMC election, together, but we are also confident to win these corporations as well. Some people are trying to disrupt the alliance of the Thackeray brothers, but no wild power can stop them from coming together now, Raut said. Earlier, while addressing his party workers, Raj Thackeray said that in Mumbai, the Thackeray brand is important and has strong relevance, and he asked his party workers to prepare for the local body elections. Sanjay Raut criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that before 2014, India was a better country, but since Modi arrived in Delhi, India has fallen into big potholes. Modi has destroyed the countrys economy and social fabric. Earlier, people were religious and spiritual, but Modi and the BJP have been converting them into fanatics. And fanaticism is dividing the country on religious and caste lines. This is the British people's strategy: divide and rule and destroy. Therefore, the freedom of our country is in trouble, Raut alleged. He also said PM Modi gave the call for Atmanirbhar Bharat, but he forgot that the Congress party had first coined the slogan of Swadeshi. Modi has destroyed our foreign policy. Once the US was close to India is imposing a tariff and threatening more percentage of tariff percentage. The US president is closer to our enemy state of Pakistan. This is harsh irony, Raut said. He also criticised Modi for not speaking against Trump and for not confronting China. In the backdrop of vote theft allegations by the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Raj Thackeray warned his people to check the voting list, the added and deleted names from the voting list. Aadhaar, PAN card, voter ID not sufficient to determine Indian citizenship: Bombay HC
MUMBAI: A person does not become a citizen of India merely by possessing documents like Aadhaar card, PAN card or a voter ID, the Bombay High Court on Tuesday said while refusing bail to a man, allegedly from Bangladesh, for entering India illegally. The man is accused of staying in India for more than a decade with forged and fabricated documents. A bench of Justice Amit Borkar said provisions of the Citizenship Act lay down who can be a citizen of India and how citizenship can be acquired and documents such as the Aadhaar card, PAN card and voter ID are only meant for identification or availing services. The court refused bail to Babu Abdul Ruf Sardar, alleged to be a Bangladeshi national, who entered India illegally without a valid passport or travel documents. He allegedly procured forged Indian documents such as Aadhaar card, PAN card, voter ID and also an Indian passport. In 1955, Parliament passed the Citizenship Act which created a permanent and complete system for acquiring citizenship, Justice Borkar noted. In my opinion, the Citizenship Act of 1955 is the main and controlling law for deciding questions about nationality in India today. This is the statute that lays down who can be a citizen, how citizenship can be acquired and in what situations it can be lost, he said. Merely having documents such as Aadhaar card, PAN card or voter ID does not, by itself, make someone a citizen of India. These documents are meant for identification or availing services, but they do not override the basic legal requirements of citizenship as prescribed in the Citizenship Act, the HC said. The law draws a clear line between lawful citizens and illegal migrants, the bench said. People falling in the category of illegal migrants are barred from obtaining citizenship through most of the legal routes mentioned in the Citizenship Act, it added. This distinction is important because it protects the sovereignty of the country and ensures that benefits and rights meant for citizens are not wrongfully taken by those who have no legal status to stay in India, the court said. The bench, while refusing bail to Sardar, noted that verification of his documents was still on and the investigation was also still continuing, and the police's fear that he may abscond if granted bail is a genuine apprehension. The allegations in the case are not small and it is not just about staying in India without permission or overstaying, but it is about making and using fake and forged identity documents with the aim of pretending to be an Indian citizen, the HC said. Sardar was booked under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Passport (Entry to India) Act and the Foreigners Order. The court noted the investigation in the case is still going on with regard to genuineness of the Aadhaar card, which is being verified by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). Sardar in his bail plea said he was a bona fide citizen of India and that there was no conclusive or reliable evidence to prove he is a national of Bangladesh. He further claimed his documents are linked with his income tax records and business registration and that he has been residing in Mumbai's neighbouring Thane district since 2013. The prosecution opposed the plea, claiming if the accused was released on bail, he may abscond. The police further said a probe was on to ascertain if there was a larger organised network involving illegal immigration and identity fraud. The court in its order noted the allegations against Sardar are not limited to a mere technical violation of immigration norms, but indicate a case of deliberate concealment of identity and creation of forged documents for obtaining the Indian citizenship benefits. When the Constitution of India was being drafted, the country had just gone through a historic transformation and the partition at the time caused a massive movement of people across borders, creating a need to decide who would be accepted as citizens of the new nation, it noted. Keeping this in mind, framers of the Constitution decided to make an arrangement for deciding citizenship, the high court said. The Constitution laid down provisions which gave immediate clarity on who would be considered a citizen at the very beginning of the Republic and it gave the elected Parliament the powers to make laws on citizenship in future, the court noted.

Go to court or EC if you have proof: Shinde on Rahul Gandhi's 'vote theft' allegations
THANE: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday targeted the Opposition Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi over his vote theft allegations, saying they should approach the court or the Election Commission if they have a proof. By making such aseless claims, they have insulted the people of Maharashtra, Shiv Sena leader Shinde told reporters at an event here. Gandhi on Thursday claimed a huge criminal fraud in polls through collusion between the BJP and the Election Commission , citing an analysis of voter rolls in a constituency in Karnataka last year. A day after, he alleged that the Election Commission and the BJP colluded to steal the Lok Sabha election from the people, and that there was vote theft in at least three states. Gandhi had also alleged that the Maharashtra assembly poll results (last year) confirmed the Congress's suspicion that the election was 'stolen'. Asked about such charges, Shinde, without taking any name, criticised the Opposition for making wild allegations in public. If they have proof, they should go to the court or the Election Commission. By making such baseless claims, they have insulted the citizens of Maharashtra who elected the Mahayuti (comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP), as well as our sisters, brothers, farmers and the people of the state, he said. Soon after Gandhi levelled the charge asserting that vote chori(vote theft) is an atom bomb on our democracy, the Chief Electoral Officers of Karnataka and Maharashtra had asked the former Congress chief to share names of electors he claimed were wrong in the voters' list along with a signed declaration for poll authorities to initiate ecessary proceedings in the matter. The Election Commission on Friday accused Gandhi of recycling old allegations of poll irregularities settled by the Supreme Court, and asked the Congress leader to provide a written declaration on his claims about wrongful entries in the voters' list or tender an apology. UP Anti-Terrorist Squad nabs two for plotting to incite communal discord
LUCKNOW: In a major crackdown, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), on Monday evening, busted a gang comprising two individuals, allegedly engaged in hatching a conspiracy to incite communal disharmony and wage an ideological war against the state of India. As per the ATS sources, the arrests were part of a wider investigation into radical online networks linked to Pakistan. The UP ATS, initially detained Ajmal Ali, 19, from Amroha in western UP on August 2 for questioning. Based on Ajmals grilling, his mentor, Usama Maj Sheikh, 24, was picked up from Thane on August 3. The ATS arrested both Ajmal and Usama officially on Monday. The ATS sources claimed that sustained electronic surveillance and intelligence inputs led them to uncover a WhatsApp group named Reviving Islam with over 400 members, including three group administrators. The majority of the group members were reportedly based in Pakistan, while one mobile number linked to the group was traced to a UP resident. The ATS sleuths identified that the number belonged to Ajmal Ali, son of Asgar Khan, of Dehra village under Naugawan Sadat police station in Amroha district. Ajmal was found to be actively promoting radical ideology against non-Muslim communities and was involved in propagating anti-India content across multiple social media platforms, said the ATS sources. Ajmal was summoned to the ATS headquarters in Lucknow for questioning, during which he confessed that he was part of the Reviving Islam WhatsApp group. Ajmal also confessed to being in touch with several Pakistani nationals on other social media platforms. He revealed the identity of Thanes Usama Maj Sheikh, whom he considered his mentor. Usama was operating through an Instagram handle, said the ATS sources. ATS added that Usama, son of Maj Sheikh, residing near a Dargah in Badlapur village under Badlapur West police station in Thane district of Maharashtra, was allegedly in regular touch with Ajmal through Instagram and the encrypted messaging platform Signal. They used to exchange views on overthrowing the democratically elected government of India and replacing it with Sharia law through violent jihad, said an ATS source. Consequently, UP ATS registered an FIR arresting Ajmal and produced him before the court, which sent him to judicial custody. Following further leads, the ATS tracked down Usama Maj Sheikh, arresting him on August 4, 2025, from his residence in Badlapur in Thane, Maharashtra. He was interrogated further regarding his role in the ideological indoctrination and recruitment of radical youth for extremist objectives, said the ATS sources. As per the ATS sources, the preliminary inquiry revealed that the objective of both the persons was to incite communal hatred, provoke religious animosity, and prepare ground for a violent movement to establish Ghazwa-e-Hindan Islamist concept of religious conquestby spreading Sharia law through jihad. Both Ajmal and Usama were allegedly influencing Muslim youth against non-Muslims while pushing them to join anti-national activities aimed at destabilising the country, the ATS added.

MNS leader slaps staffer of gaming zone frequented by children in school hours; video goes viral
NEW DELHI: A video footage has surfaced online showing a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) functionary slapping an employee of a gaming centre in Maharashtra's Thane district, inviting criticism for his action. The incident, which took place on Tuesday, apparently stemmed from complaints that children were frequently visiting the gaming zone, located in Kalyan town, after skipping school and stealing money from their homes. Police said they have not received any complaint so far and are verifying the video which has been circulated online. In the clip, MNS Kalyan president Ulhas Bhoir is seen confronting the staff of the gaming zone over the presence of students clad in school uniforms at the facility. He accused the gaming zone of allowing truancy and irresponsible behaviour among minors. When the gaming zone employee said he had no control over who entered the premises, Bhoir lost his temper and slapped him, warning such negligence could seriously impact an entire generation. Bhoir, who was visibly agitated, claimed students had allegedly stolen Rs 4,000 from their parents to spend at the gaming centre. He pointed at one boy and cited a drastic drop in his academic performance as an example of the negative influence of the gaming zone. Issuing what he called a final warning, Bhoir threatened strict action if students were found at the venue again. He said the facility could face closure if such incidents continued. Speaking to mediapersons later, Bhoir justified the confrontation, saying several parents had approached him with complaints that their children were skipping school and misusing money to frequent the gaming zone. The incident sparked criticism online, with many people condemning the MNS leader's move to resort to violence and public intimidation. While the issue of students skipping school has drawn attention, questions have been raised over Bhoir's actions. Activists of the Raj Thackeray-headed MNS have in the recent past assaulted and threatened some non-Marathi speaking people, including shopkeepers, in parts of Maharashtra.

'World sleeps; while it is awake, its conscience is buried': Chidambaram on Gaza humanitarian crisis
NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday raised concerns on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and said that every day, the number of killings in the region is in the double digits, with many of them being women and children. In a post on X, Chidambaram said, Humanity is shamed in Gaza every day, the number of killings in Gaza is in the double-digits. Many of them are women and children who had nothing to do with starting the conflict. He said that 1000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza while trying to get food. According to the UN, over 1000 Palestinians have been killed since May while trying to get food in the Gaza Strip Look at the pictures of hungry children at refugee camps. It is obvious they are starving -- and dying, Chidambaram said. The world sleeps; while it is awake, its conscience is buried, he said. Earlier, India called for immediate ceasefire in Gaza, uninterrupted humanitarian aid and release of hostages to address the deepening crisis in the region. Speaking at the United Nations Security Council's quarterly open debate on the Middle East, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, said that mere pauses in hostilities are not enough to address the worsening humanitarian situation. Intermittent pauses in hostilities are not enough to address the scale of humanitarian challenges confronting the people, who grapple daily with acute shortages of food and fuel, inadequate medical services and lack of access to education, he said. Harish expressed concern over the collapsing healthcare and education systems in Gaza. WHO estimates that around 95 percent of all hospitals in Gaza are damaged or destroyed. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights reports that more than 6,50,000 children have had no schooling for over 20 months, he said. Israel's war on Gaza, since Oct. 7, 2023, has now killed at least 58,386 people and wounded 139,077, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry's data. 'Gaza is dying, we are dying with it': AFP, Al Jazeera says its journalists in Gaza could die of hunger Israeli strikes kill at least 21 in Gaza as rights groups warn of 'mass starvation'
India has called for renewed dialogue and diplomacy to achieve peace in the Middle East, emphasizing that temporary pauses in hostilities are insufficient. Addressing the UN Security Council, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni stressed the need for a ceasefire, release of hostages, and a two-state solution.
India calls for ceasefire in Gaza, says intermittent pauses 'not enough'
UNITED NATIONS: Voicing concern over the persisting humanitarian crisis in Gaza, India asserted that a ceasefire must be put in place, emphasising that intermittent pauses in hostilities are ot enough to address the scale of challenges facing the region's people. Todays meeting takes place against the backdrop of a persisting humanitarian crisis in Gaza, said Indias Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, addressing an open debate inthe UN Security Council on Wednesday. Intermittent pauses in hostilities are not enough to address the scale of humanitarian challenges confronting the people, who grapple daily with acute shortages of food and fuel, inadequate medical services and lack of access to education, Harish said at the open debate on the 'Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question'. Underlining that the way ahead is clear, and highlighting Indias consistent position in this regard, Harish said the ongoing human suffering must not be allowed to continue. Humanitarian assistance needs to be facilitated in a safe, sustained and timely manner. There is no substitute to peace. A ceasefire must be put in place. All hostages must be released. Dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable paths to achieving these objectives. There are no other fixes or solutions, he said. He also expressed hope that an upcoming UN conference on the Israel-Palestine conflict would pave the way for concrete steps towards achieving a two-State solution. Harish told the Council debate, held under Pakistans presidency of the Security Council for the month of July, that India shares historic and strong ties with its Palestinian brothers and sisters. We have always stood by them and our commitment towards the Palestinian cause is unwavering, he said, noting that India was the first non-Arab country to recognise the State of Palestine. Describing the health and education situation in Gaza as particularly troubling, Harish said the World Health Organisation estimates that around 95 per cent of all hospitals in Gaza are damaged or destroyed. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights reports that more than 650,000 children have had no schooling for over 20 months, he said. Harish said that India takes note of the High-Level International Conference on the implementation of a two-State solution scheduled for July 28-30. While engaging in a forward-leaning and constructive manner, it is our hope that this conference would pave the way for concrete steps towards achieving a two-State solution, Harish said. He said India underscores its readiness to contribute to efforts aimed atshaping a political horizon that restores hope for the Palestinians and achieving sustained peace in the Middle East. #IndiaAtUN PR @AmbHarishP delivered s statement at the @UN Security Council Quarterly Open Debate on the Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question. @MEAIndia @IndianDiplomacy pic.twitter.com/T7NNvIXzqk India at UN, NY (@IndiaUNNewYork) July 23, 2025 The high-level conference, co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France, was scheduled to take place from June 17-20 but was postponed due to escalating tensions in the region. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has stressed that it is essential to keep alive the two-State solution perspective with all the terrible things we are witnessing in Gaza and the West Bank. And for those that doubt about the two-state solution, I ask: What is the alternative? Is it a one-state solution in which either the Palestinians are expelled or the Palestinians will be forced to live in their land without rights? That would be totally unacceptable. I firmly believe that it is the duty of the international community to keep the two-State solution alive and then to materialise the conditions to make it happen, he had said. President of the General Assembly Philemon Yang has described the international conference as a crucial opportunity that we must seize to chart an irreversible path towards the implementation of the two-State solution. It is imperative that this conference succeeds. India reiterated that the pathway to enduring peace is rooted in a two-State solution - one that establishes a sovereign, viable and independent State of Palestine within recognised and mutually agreed borders, living side by side with Israel in peace. Indias endeavour is to make a tangible impact on the daily lives of the Palestinians by implementing projects in diverse sectors, and the country is currently implementing projects valued at more than USD 40 million, Harish said.
