Unforgettable 17-day road trip in my BMW X3: Pune to Leh and back

BHPian GAPune recently shared this with other enthusiasts. Why Leh?In 2022, after a soft off-roading in Lonavala, I was glancing through team bhp and came across Leh Travelogue. The travelogue by Worldcrawler is world-class, and exceptionally well illustrated with pictures. Inspired by this, I was motivated to make the trip happen in 2023, but got postponed to 2024.Brief IntroI'm a passionate driver who has owned five cars in the past 15 years, and I currently own a BMW X3 and a VW GT TSI 1.2. I have completed several long trips, including Pune-Bandipur-Pune (Karnataka), Pune-Bangalore-Pune, Pune-Rajasthan-Pune, Pune-Goa-Pune, Delhi-Mussoorie-Delhi, Delhi-Corbett-Kausani-Nainital-Delhi, as well as many shorter trips. While planning my next adventure, I consulted a few friends and found another enthusiastic motorist who once went out for a cup of tea in Pune and ended up driving to Hyderabad. He's done such spontaneous trips many times. We both teamed up well and did 50-50 driving. We also had a third driving partner who unfortunately had to drop out for valid reasons and that's where our families joined us in Leh (Pune-Delhi-Leh flight)SummaryWe embarked on a 17-day journey from Pune to Leh and back, from May 3rd to May 19th, 2024. During this trip, we covered 6,415 kilometres (3,986 miles) of driving - Pune-Indore-Delhi-Jammu-Sonmarg-Leh and back via the same route. Our altitude ranged from 570 metres to 5,384 metres, reaching heights 20 metres above the Everest Base Camp in Nepal. The minimum temperature during our trip was -2 degrees Celsius one night, and we travelled extensively in temperatures around 2.5 degrees Celsius. It was a great, fun-filled adventure.Expedition HighlightsBy Road or Flight, high altitude sickness can always happen and differs from person to person - acclimatise properly.Should not drive in desert dust so that the car's Air Filter is not clogged with dust.UPI is accepted everywhere (95% of the time we used GPay), carrying cash is good to have.If cold, do not turn the heat to maximum, because the room heater uses Oxygen and consumes more oxygen from the enclosed room - causing breathing difficultyKeep sipping warm water.Use sunscreen as the skin burns in 1 day.Have the doctor's recommended dose of Diamox if needed.People and culture of Leh are amazing, helpful and down-to-earth people.Giving lifts and taking lifts is very normal in Leh.PreparationWe did not book enroute hotels, we only booked hotels in Leh. We kept one extra buffer day before Leh, in case roads are closed. All 4 tires were changed before the trip at Darshan tires, Baner, Pune. These are upgraded tires for X3 from 245/50/R19 to 255/50/R19 PicturesThis is from Sonmarg Grazing horses in Sonmarg Open Door Policy in Baltal This is after Zoji La Pass is crossed. It's a beautiful cold desert with rocks, snow and sand as it's unmatched beauty. Every mountain tells a different story. The colours of the mountain vary in different shades of Maroon, Brown, Black, etcDAY 1: 3rd May, Pune to Indore (569 Kms, 11 hours)We started at 7 am from Baner, Pune and reached Indore at 6 pm. Lot of it was a bumpy ride because of narrow roads and potholes via villages because Google maps took us via Lasalgaon. The route was: Pune-Chakan-Sangamner-Lasalgaon-Malegaon-Dhule-Indore Via Nashik is a better road which skips Lasalgaon and takes us via Nashik, which we realised while coming back. Nashik has flyovers and there was hardly any traffic jam. The roads in MP were very good and unbelievable, smooth and not at all bumpy. Their cement roads were better too as compared to many states.DAY 2: 4th May, Indore to Delhi (830 kms, 11 hours) Left Indore at 7 am and reached Delhi at 6 pm. Indore-Ujjain-Agar-Jhalrapatan-Kota-Delhi Again the MP and Rajasthan roads were a lot better. This route was via NE4 and Western/Eastern Peripheral Expy. NE4 experience was great, very less traffic and only food courts nearer to Delhi were open which was a challenge. Instead of somewhere in Gurugram, we went to my uncle's house in Gurjinder Vihar in Greater Noida. My uncle had served in the Indian Army and was posted in Leh for 2.5 years, hearing out a few Ladakhi stories was mesmerising.DAY 3: 5th May, Delhi to Jammu (660 kms, 11 hours 30 mins)We left Delhi at 6:30 am and reached Jammu by 6 pm. On the way, we had to cross via Punjab's village because the farmer protest was still on with a complete roadblock on the highway. It was a real rural experience with no roads and farmlands. Weather in Jammu was like Pune, hot and steady. The highway work was still going on so a long 1-way stretch was used for both ways of traffic around Jammu.DAY 4: 6th May, Jammu to Sonmarg (326 kms, 9 hours)This was an exciting journey as it crossed via Udhampur, Ramban, Banihal and Awantipora, Srinagar and then Sonmarg. We crossed through beautiful tunnels, one of them was approx 9 kms long and very well lit. It is called Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel in Jammu which is the longest highway tunnel in India which connects Udhampur to Ramban in Jammu. We left around 6:30 and reached Sonmarg around 3:30 am. So, we decided to venture further to Kargil. But, After Sonmarg - the pass through the Snowy Mountains is called Zojila Pass which is kind of a one-way through many stretches. Zojila Pass route is open on alternate days, one day to go up (Sonmarg to Kargil) and another day to come down (Kargil to Sonmarg). We crossed Sonmarg Check Post#1 (numbering is done by me and it's not a check post number) and reached the Check Post#2 near Baltal (30 mins drive from Sonmarg). They said it's not open and mostly will open tomorrow. But locals told us they were allowed many times, so we waited in the Baltal area for 3 hours, which is close to the Sind River. We came back to Sonmarg and checked-in to the first available hotel, did not do a lot of research.DAY 5: 7th May, SonmargWe got ready and left by 6:30 am and got stopped at Check Post#1 in Sonmarg. We waited there for 3 hours and somehow managed to cross Check Post#1 and reached Check Post #2 where they denied and asked us to stay at Baltal. We waited for 11 hours that day, kept on checking at Check Post#2. These 11 hours were beautiful, we had Maggi and Bread-Omelette at a Tapri. By evening the office in charge pushed us back to Sonmarg.DAY 6: 8th May, Sonmarg to Leh (338 kms, 7 hours) We left by 6:30 and the queue was very long. The cars which were coming from Kargil, I asked 4-5 local (Kashmiri and Ladakhi) drivers how the road was. They assured me that our cars could go easily and asked us to drive slowly and safely since the road is very bad. After 3 hours (9:30 am) the check post opened the traffic. We passed through the Zojila Pass which we are calling Godzilla Pass, it was outstanding as 15 feet of snow walls on both sides and the road was cut through the middle by BRO (Border Road Organizations). Excellent work done by BRO. The condition of those roads was like the roads in Pune and Mumbai during the rainy season and also otherwise. So, they were not very bad for us. Huge difference in road quality and expectations people have. They are getting used to BRO quality roads, they will get the shock of their lives if they look at Pune/Mumbai roads. Near Magnetic Hill, a few folks were enjoying their bikes in the mud. We too took our Blu for a spin which was a great experience, the car looked like leaving contrails behind like a Jet.VideosAfter Zoji La PassBikers enjoying the SpinBlu with contrailsDAY 7: 9th May, LehToday our family flew from Pune to Leh with a connecting flight from Delhi joined us and our number grew to 5. This day was spent as a rest day for everyone to adapt to the altitude.DAY 8: 10th May, LehWe visited the Leh market. I bought a leather jacket from a shop called Leather House. In the evening we went to Magnetic Hill. It is said that an optical illusion makes you see that you are travelling downhill instead of uphill. It is very famous, but it was the same as a normal road. My son did an ATV ride of a few kms which was INR1200. While turning back, we again thought of going off-road, but the 'Engine check' light started to shine. We were stressed about it the whole trip. More on that in the Extra notes and precautions at the end. We met a mechanic named Thinley around 9:45 pm and he helped us connect the OBD port and read the error in the laptop, he formidably charged us INR500 only. The warning was Air Mass System, Plausibility: Measured Air Mass Too Low Compared With Calculated Air Mass (With Inactive Exhaust-Gas Recirculation). Very helpful and kind person. ATV Ride - They claim it to be the World's highest one, next to Magnetic HillDAY 9: 11th May, Leh to Nubra Valley (126 kms, 8 hours) We left around 8 am and before Khardungla the roads were not great. There was a landslide and hence we had to wait 45 mins in a queue. We saw Halo as a ring on the sun when the light refracts off ice crystals present in a thin veil of cirrus clouds. We connected with the BMW service centre and they mentioned As per the technical team, the air supply intake is not proper, might be the air filter clogged, air tube pinched, or the level of Oxygen/air is low. The top of Khardungla was cold and breezy. It was crowded so we couldn't get a great picture. The roads going down from Khardungla Pass were okay but further ahead it was average. We stopped on the way to the World's highest Go Karting. After that, the road to Nubra was blocked for widening, so we had to travel through a dry riverbed called Shyok. It was totally full of pebbles, so we nicknamed it Pebble Road. We drove for an hour on this kind of road and Blu took it easy. Nubra Valley was beautiful with Snow Capped Mountains, Rocky Mountains, Muddy Mountains, Fine Grained Sand, River and Greenery - all in one place. There were sand dunes and patches of a grass-cactus type of plant surrounded by tall rocky mountains. We tried Ladakhi breakfast and tea.More videosShyok River Crossing 1Shyok River Crossing 2DAY 10: 12th May, Nubra valley to Pangong Lake (180 kms, 8 hours)The road was very poor, approx 60 kms was no road and we drove slowly. While we were close to Pangong Lake, the roads were extremely good. We experienced light snowfall near the lake. Road was as good as ever. There were high winds and a lot of dust. It was very cold at night and sometimes it felt like the wind will blow the tent we lived in. Still living in a tent in the cold desert is an unforgettable experience. Pangong Lake was beautiful and felt untouched. We spent hours in the evening. Pangong was very windy and cold in the night. Drive to Pangong TsoDAY 11: 13th May, Pangong lake to Han-le (154 kms, 7 hours)We stopped by the lake again for scooter and bike pictures from 3 idiots. Left around 10 am from there for Hanle. We saw Yaks near snow, so we ran towards them to click pictures and crossed 2 small river streams where our shoes got wet. We had lunch in an Army Canteen in Nyoma. We reached Hanle around 6 pm. Han le was very cold. It is known for its observatory, but visitors are not allowed to talk to the staff or disturb them. The hotel we stayed in had no heaters and there was no electricity from 11pm to 6pm. Fortunately, the whole trip there did bear some fruit. We had an indirect connection with one of the scientists. He explained how the telescope works, but we couldn't see real-time images because we had to visit during the day since it was too cold at night. They declare 30 kms as Dark Sky Sanctuary in the night, so power was cut off from the grid. Only BSNL works in Hanle without the internet.DAY 12: 14th May- Han-le to Leh (256 kms, 6 hours)We were going to go to Tsomoriri after Han-le, but because of our experience in Han- le, we wanted to go somewhere warmer. So we went back to Leh since it was as far from Han-le as Tsomoriri was. In Leh, we went back to the market because it had been too much time away from any shop. Sadly we couldn't shop as the shops closed early in Leh. We had dinner in a newly opened restaurant called 'Zilla's restaurant'. For all book lovers, there was an admirable collection of books.DAY 13: 15th May, LehIn the afternoon, we met Thinley again and he cleaned the air filter which was easy to take out and checked the warnings again on the OBD port and Phew, the warning was gone. Basically, the Air filter gathered dust, and the air filter is the lungs for the engine where it was having a problem breathing in (i.e. engine not getting enough Oxygen). We had lunch at Chef's Kitchen in Leh market itself. Everyone loved the food. I recommend you give the place a visit. We found out that the Manali route is still blocked due to snow around Darcha, so the only way back was via Srinagar.DAY 14: 16th May, Leh to Pune and Leh to SonmargOur family left for Pune in the morning by flight and we drove to Kargil. Visited Kargil war memorial and then thought of taking a chance via Zojila pass. We reached the check post at 4:30 pm. This was not the dedicated day of Zojila Pass to come down (Kargil to Sonmarg). Around 7:00 pm they allowed us to pass through and we drove through a white snow-capped mountain in the night which was glowing like anything. The temperature was 2.5 degree and by then we had acclimatised to the cold weather. We crossed Zojila, there were both side traffics and someone managed the one-way routes very well, so we had to stop by in a queue. We reached Sonmarg by 9 pm and checked into the same hotel.DAY 15: 17th May, Sonmarg to Delhi (944 kms, 21 hours) This was a 21-hour long stretched drive. Jammu's hilly area was so badly blocked that it took 2 hours for which was supposed to be 30 mins. We reached Delhi around 3 am.DAY 16: 18th May, Delhi to Indore (787 kms, 12 hours) We got up a little late and reached Indore in time. The start was via NE4 (Delhi Mumbai Expy and then it rerouted outside Kota. The roads were pretty good while returning.DAY 17: 19th May, Indore to Pune (605 kms, 12 hours)We went via Nashik and skipped Lasalgaon, these roads were very good. The trip is indeed over but the memories are everlasting. A dream journey which came true! Check out BHPian comments for more insights and information.

Patna's Festival of Democracy: Citizens Return Home to Vote

Patna's Festival of Democracy: Citizens Return Home to Vote ''Every vote counts... this is a crucial election,'' asserts Sheema Fatima, an assistant professor in Mumbai, who like several others has come home to Patna to exercise their franchise in the Lok Sabha polls on June 1. Some planned their travel well in advance and landed in the city a few days ago while others arrived Friday morning or will be reaching during the day to participate in the ''festival of democracy''. The district of Patna has two parliamentary constituencies -- Patna Sahib and Pataliputra -- both of which will go to polls along with six other seats in the state in the seventh and final phase of the general election. ''They say it is a festival of democracy and in many ways, it is. But it is an important exercise that allows you to express your voice, in line with the values of citizenship and participatory democracy,'' the assistant professor at the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS), Mumbai, said. ''Every vote counts,'' Fatima, who arrived in Patna a few days ago, said. ''This is a very crucial general election. And it is important to vote, so I am here... I have been out of Patna for a long time for higher education and then work. I had come to vote in the general election in 2019 and the 2020 Bihar Assembly polls as well,'' she told PTI here. Fatima will be exercising her franchise along with her mother in the Patna Sahib constituency on Saturday. The BJP's incumbent MP and former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad is seeking a second term from the crucial Patna Sahib seat, while the INDIA bloc has fielded Anshul Avijit, the grandson of former railway minister Babu Jagjiwan Ram and son of former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, on a Congress ticket. In Patliputra, the BJP has locked horns with the RJD. Lalu Yadav's daughter Misa Bharati seeking to wrest the seat from Ram Kripal Yadav. Diptanshu Sinha, 27, an architect who moved to Gurugram last year for work, arrived here on Friday morning. ''I had booked train tickets in advance,'' he said, adding, ''It's just one vote but I hope it will add to the collective effort to make my city better where development and heritage preservation will go hand-in-hand and not just blind concrete construction we are seeing today in Patna.'' For Sinha, education, health and sensitive urban planning are the key issues in this election. Several others who have also arrived in the city to take part in the election largely concurred that ''if we don't vote, we have no right to crib about governance issues''. Anamika Priyadarshini, who was born and raised in Patna but works with a US-based organisation in Delhi, said ''I will be voting tomorrow as well.'' ''I am working from home today and have a late-evening flight for Patna from Delhi. I feel this election is extremely important and I want to be part of this process,'' she told PTI over the phone. Priyadarshini studied at the St John's Convent High School in Patna and later, moved to the US for higher studies. She came back to Patna afterwards and recently, moved to Delhi for a new job. ''For me, coming over to my city to vote is doing something ethically right. It's just one vote and things are not in my hand when it comes to the larger picture, but I want to look at myself in the mirror with a clear conscience that I did my bit,'' she said. At the Patna airport's arrival lounge, the Election Commission has put up a tableau depicting the importance of the election with the caption ''Nothing Like Voting - I Vote for Sure''. The tableau also sports a banner that reads ''Chunav ka Parv Desh ka Garv'' and ''Celebrate the Biggest Festival of Democracy''. Patna's district magistrate-cum-district election officer has been appealing to the people of the city residing outside to return and exercise their franchise. Several incentives have also been announced which include discounts for voters at many restaurants or rebates at a famous confectionery shop in the city on polling day to motivate the electorate. Over 43 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the two constituencies in the district, according to official data shared by authorities. On Thursday evening, a set of 7,500 earthen lamps were lit on the banks of the river Ganga at Digha Ghat and a human chain was also formed to appeal to people to vote. The Patna Municipal Corporation organised this and 100 earthen lamps each from all 75 wards were brought in, along with a voter from each of the wards, according to officials.

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: Here's How Gurugram Imposes Section 144

Gurugram: The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Gurugram, Shri Nishant Kumar Yadav, has issued an order to impose Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), 1973, to maintain public peace during the counting of votes for the Lok Sabha General Election 2024. This measure aims to prevent any potential disturbances during this crucial phase of the election process. Order Details: Date: June 4, 2024 Locations: Government Girls College, Sector-14 & Mini Secretariat, Gurugram Prohibitions: Assembly of 5 or more people within 200 meters of counting centers. Carrying weapons, explosives, or inflammable materials. Exemptions: Police and public servants on duty. Enforcement: Strict compliance will be enforced by the Commissioner of Police, Gurugram. Legal Consequences: Violators will face prosecution under Section 188 IPC. Order by: Shri Nishant Kumar Yadav, District Magistrate, Gurugram. The prohibitory order specifies that assembly of five or more people within a 200-meter radius of the counting centers, as well as carrying weapons, explosives, or inflammable materials in the specified areas, is strictly prohibited. Police and public servants on duty are exempt from these restrictions, and the Commissioner of Police, Gurugram, will enforce the order strictly. Violators will face prosecution under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). This preventive measure is aimed at ensuring that the vote-counting process proceeds without any incidents that could disrupt public order. In a similar precautionary step, the district administration of Bhadrak in Odisha has also imposed prohibitory orders across all assembly segment areas until the end of polling on Saturday. This decision follows reports of clashes between workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). The prohibitory orders, under Section 144 of CrPC, were enforced from Thursday night and will continue until 6 pm on the day voting concludes. The imposition of Section 144 in Bhadrak was prompted by an incident where BJP Yuva Morchas Odisha unit president Abhilas Panda and six associates were attacked, allegedly by BJD workers, in the Chandbali assembly segment under Bhadrak Lok Sabha constituency. The injured are currently undergoing treatment, and police have detained three individuals in connection with the attack. These measures underscore the importance of maintaining law and order during elections, ensuring a smooth and peaceful democratic process. 7000 km with a RE Hunter 350: Pros, cons & overall ownership review

BHPian Akash_1806 recently shared this with other enthusiasts. Hello everyone, I take immense pleasure in sharing this review on behalf of my friend, Ritwik who owns a 2022 RE Hunter 350. In his words: I have been the proud owner of a Dapper Grey Hunter 350 for 18 months now. I purchased and took delivery of this bike on 24th October 2022.Purchase ExperienceI booked the bike during the month of September 2022 via the Royal Enfield app for a refundable amount of 5000/-. Upon conversing with a showroom near me, I was intimated that my bike would be delivered within a span of two months, which was true since my bike was delivered within 1.5 months. The booking and delivery experience with my Royal Enfield dealership was smooth and unremarkable.First ImpressionOnce the Hunter was home, I was like a child with a new toy. I couldn't stop thinking about it all the time or clicking photos everywhere I parked it. The Hunter carries immense personality for a bike its size, being the smallest and lightest amongst its Enfield siblings; this personality stirred my interest every time I took it out even for a milk run. I made several observations in my initial days of riding that I have listed below: - The Positives:As aforementioned, it is the lightest Enfield available on the market and therefore an excellent beginner bike for those looking for an Enfield to be their first, as it was mine. The J platform 350cc engine paired with the lightweight build, delivers a smooth and peppy ride in the city, maintaining the fun of riding a motorcycle no matter what traffic situation you find yourself in.Royal Enfield engines, known for their low-range torque, paired with the compact form of the Hunter, make navigating city traffic a breeze. The stock exhaust is quite melodious and loud. One might argue it needs no customization on that end.The Negatives:My routine does not involve pillions but, the few times I have given a ride, I've received comments about the rear seat not being able to support the pillion against the torque. The Hunter is factory-fitted with halogen headlamps which have decent illumination but, since I live in Gurugram, I frequently face high beams from aftermarket lights due to which I also switched to LEDs.The clutch lever is significantly hard to pull and takes some getting used to. People with small hands would find comfort in investing in riding gloves.Considering the above, I am content to say my initial month with the Hunter was extremely fun and enjoyable. It fulfilled every expectation even though I had bought it with my eyes shut and thought nothing about it before it arrived. My Experience post 7000 kmIn the first 10 months of owning a Hunter, it became my primary mode of transport and my vehicle of choice for meets and joyrides and I'm very content with the fact that it has never failed me on either job. After these months I have made more observations about the Hunter, as listed below:Stock RE brake pads are short-lived and have an abysmal initial bite. Pair it with the RE Anti-lock Braking System which kicks in too early and you can find yourself hurtling into an unfavourable situation pretty soon, as did I. My suggestion would be to upgrade to ceramic brake pads to have a far better initial bite and to increase the rider's confidence in the braking, as did I. I have found Vesrah ceramic brake pads to be to my liking and they are currently employed in the front brakes of the Hunter.Past the first service, I have noticed it seldom but surely tends to miss a shift but, this only happens to be a mental scare since the torquey engine prevents stalling and you can have another go at landing the right gear.I am in no manner a perfect rider and have had crashes that needed a part to be replaced. Here is where I have noticed delayed procurement of parts by the dealership. Apart from this, I have faced alignment issues upon receiving the bike from service which was fixed upon simple notice but, I believe shouldn't be a point of discussion and therefore leaves much to be desired from Royal Enfield service.Another issue I have faced as a newbie rider is dropping my bike. The gear shifter lever and the rear brake lever have a tendency to bend inwards to an extent that renders them unusable and a long flat tool is all you need to fix it. I only mention it because I have faced it a bit too many times and I think new Hunter buyers will benefit from such knowledge about the Hunter. After the first month or so, upon a friend's recommendation, I started filling it with XP95 instead of standard petrol and the difference in performance and mileage has been significant; to this day I always fill it with 95 octane.ConclusionThe Royal Enfield Hunter 350 is decently capable, fun to ride, mildly comfortable and easy to handle and maintain compact city cruiser. The machine leaves nothing to be desired and fully asserts its tagline: A SHOT OF MOTORCYCLING. Ending this review with 2 beautiful shots of this amazing machine. Until next time. Cities such as Hyderabad, Navi Mumbai, and Pune are rising to meet the growing demands and emerging as potential hubs for recruiters seeking diverse talent with critical skill sets. The nature of work influences organizations' decision criteria, with Tier 2 cities often housing transactional and doer roles, while tactical and transformational roles are located near headquarters, primarily in Tier 1 cities and some satellite cities. 90 percent of companies, basis our interactions with industry leaders revealed that tapping into the talent pool of satellite cities has been highly beneficial for organizations. It enables them to broaden their talent base and attract high-quality candidates who seek opportunities close to their families and support networks. Candidates now prefer office campuses that offer desirable features, including modern facilities, amenities like cafeterias and recreational spaces, state-of-the-art health and fitness clubs, a commitment to sustainability, and excellent connectivity infrastructure. These factors play a crucial role in attracting top-tier talent by providing a fulfilling work environment and promoting well-being, productivity, and work-life balance. 60% of leaders focus on balancing employee satisfaction with business needs in quality-of-living strategies In today's work landscape, where quality of life is paramount, the KPMG report says that the key factors like connectivity, commute time, safety, healthcare, and air quality. Our study shows Chennai, Hyderabad, and Delhi have lower cost of living indices, while Bengaluru, Gurugram, and Pune offer higher local purchasing power. The cost of living varies across Indian cities. 95% of leaders agree that cost-of-living differences across Indian cities do not affect compensation decisions. Leaders mentioned that while tax rebates and simplified regulatory procedures are often considered crucial factors, supporting SEZs the overall appeal needs to be evaluated. 70% of Companies Report High Attrition in Tier 1 Cities Due to Competition and Career Growth Attrition rates are a critical factor for employers to consider while making talent feasibility decisions. High attrition rates can negatively impact organizational performance and stability. Maximum attrition occurs in Tier 1 cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad due to intense competition and career growth opportunities. Satellite cities like Navi Mumbai and Noida and Tier 2 cities like Kochi and Indore have comparatively lower attrition rates which can be attributed to factors such as better work-life balance, proximity to family and support networks, and the availability of diverse career opportunities. The survey was conducted by KPMG in India in February and March 2024, the team engaged in extensive conversations with HR leaders and Talent Acquisition heads from more than 40 companies spanning over 10 sectors, gathering valuable qualitative insights. This study, conducted by KPMG in India, was driven by rigorous research and analysis of published reports. This comprehensive approach allowed the team to gain deep insights into the dynamics and challenges faced across various sectors and regions, providing a holistic understanding of the current landscape and future trends. Satellite towns are becoming increasingly attractive due to their competitive commercial leasing prices, availability of diverse talent pools, lower attrition rates compared to tier 1 cities, and better quality of living factors such as safety, connectivity, and healthcare. Additionally, these satellite towns provide a better work-life balance for employees, with proximity to family and support networks, while still offering diverse career opportunities.

Delhi's temperature at 52.3 degree Celsius, a record for the country? IMD yet to confirm

The national capital reportedly recorded its highest-ever temperature at 52.3 degree Celsius on Wednesday. A temperature monitoring station in Delhi's Mungeshpur reported this figure at 2.30 pm. The weather department chief, however, said they are yet to confirm if it was actually the hottest day ever in the country. A team of IMD scientists visited the site to examine an 'error' in sensor or the 'local factor' as nearby stations data is comparatively low. Meanwhile, explaining the reason behind the rising temperature, India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional head Kuldeep Srivastava said the city's outskirts are the first areas to be hit by hot winds from Rajasthan. Parts of Delhi are particularly susceptible to the early arrival of these hot winds, worsening the already severe weather. Areas like Mungeshpur, Narela and Najafgarh are the first to experience the full force of these hot winds, Srivastava added. As per the sources, the temperature was more than nine degrees than expected and it was the second day of record-breaking heat. The previous highest maximum logged at a Delhi station was 49.2 degrees at Mungeshpur on May 15, 2002, officials of the weather department said. Cities in the National Capital Region (NCR) fared no better, with Faridabad recording a harrowing maximum of 48.4 degrees, followed by Noida at 47.3 degrees, Gurugram at 47 degrees, and Ghaziabad at 45.6 degrees. Meanwhile the manual observatories at Aya Nagar and Ridge near Delhi University also surpassed their previous maximum temperature records on Wednesday, reaching 47.6 degrees celsius and 47.5 degrees celsius respectively. The IMD had issued a red alert for Delhi, warning that there is a very high likelihood of developing heat illness and heat stroke in all ages, with extreme care needed for vulnerable people. Why is it so hot? Gufran Beigh, founder and project director of SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research) said, This is something unusual happening and IMD had already predicted this. Delhi records highest-ever temperature of 49.9 Celsius, IMD issues red alert for Wednesday He further added, The mercury is going up because of three reasons. Firstly, we are currently undergoing the transition period from ElNino to La Nina. This transition is associated with extreme drought conditions/ prolonged dry periods. Secondly, another main reason is absence of western disturbances due to which there is no moisture in the atmosphere. As the western disturbances are missing, the earth is heating up which is adding approximately 3 degrees continuously. Had there been western disturbances, Delhi would have witnessed light rain a week ago only and the temperature must be around 45 degrees. Third reason, Gufran Beigh said, is the Heat Island effect. Under this Heat Island Effect, there is usual variability in one area to another and it all depends on the greenery and the barren land. Also under this effect, the areas experience higher temperatures than outlying areas, he added. He also said, After this temporary rain as predicted on the weekend, the heat wave is likely to persist for another week and then the temperature will depend on how the monsoon progresses. Respite from heat: Light rain in Delhi Delhi and its surrounding areas experienced light rain on Wednesday afternoon, bringing much-needed relief amid a record-breaking heatwave. Residents of Delhi expressed their relief and surprise on social media as showers hit the capital just hours after it recorded 52.3 degrees. Social media was apparently abuzz with reactions as people shared pictures and videos of the cloudy skies and rain. Many expressed their delight and confusion over the sudden change in weather, with posts and reels of the cool drizzle after intense heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted light-intensity rain and winds over parts of the national capital on Tuesday. Delhi heat wave: Mungeshpur sizzles at 48C; no respite soon

Delhi records highest-ever temperature of 49.9 Celsius, IMD issues red alert for Wednesday

NEW DELHI: Delhiites witnessed a scorchingheatwave on Tuesday, May 28, as the maximum temperature in the national capital soared close to 50 degrees Celsius. Two weather stationsMungeshpur and Narelaobserved the high temperature touching 49.9 degrees Celsius yesterday. The manual observatories at Aya Nagar and Ridge near Delhi University surpassed their previous maximum temperature records, reaching 47.6 degrees Celsius and 47.5 degrees Celsius respectively. The previous highest maximum logged at a Delhi station was 49.2C at Mungeshpur on May 15, 2022, officials of the weather department said. Cities in the National Capital Region (NCR) fared no better, with Faridabad recording a harrowing maximum of 48.4C, followed by Noida at 47.3C, Gurugram at 47C, and Ghaziabad at 45.6C. In all, heatwave or heatwave-like conditions were recorded across Delhi-NCR. IMD classifies it as a heatwave over any region when the maximum temperature is 4.5C above normal and also above 40C. It is a severe heatwave when the maximum is 6.5C or more above normal, reads the IMD statement. According to IMD, the hot winds from Rajasthan compounded the blazing sun in Delhi, leading to very high temperatures, especially in the outskirts. Heatwave conditions are expected to persist in Delhi for the next few days. However as the weather office has also predicted light rain on Friday and partly cloudy sky the next day. From May 31 onwards, Delhi is likely to witness cloudy sky followed by thundershowers for approximately three days. Going by the IMD, the temperature may also fall to 43 degrees on June 1 and June 2. Delhi heat wave: Mungeshpur sizzles at 48C; no respite soon As for Wednesday, IMD had issued Red alert but also predicted partly cloudy sky during the evening. Vidit Sharma, founder Saveastray2 posted on X, Delhi hit a scorching 50C yesterday, with temperature and humidity increasing daily. Despite such unfavorable weather, we are preparing food for thousands of stray dogs and other animals in need. Summers are really hard on these animals; they are struggling. Let's make their struggle a bit less by ensuring they get at least one meal. Please join hands with us and enable us to do more for these voiceless souls. #SupportStrays #dogs Meanwhile Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj also said on Monday that every Delhi government hospital will reserve two beds for heatstroke patients as the ensuing heatwave prompted the weatherman to sound a red alert for the Capital. According to the Delhi Minister, five beds will be reserved at Lok Nayak Hospital. More than half of Delhi residents vote amid heat wave conditions

As per the previous charge sheet, after strangling his live-in partner to death, the accused, Aaftab, bought the tools to chop off her body and kept the parts in polybags inside the refrigerator at his house. The cops claim that they have all the relevant evidence regarding the case, which includes some bones of Shraddha that were recovered by the police and matched with her father, Vikas Walkar, through a DNA test.

Delhi Neonatal Fire: Police Probe Deepens as Arrests and Interrogations Continue

Delhi Neonatal Fire: Police Probe Deepens as Arrests and Interrogations Continue The Delhi Police will check call records and messages of the two accused arrested in connection with a fire at a neonatal facility here and question the hospital owner's wife, officials said on Tuesday. They said investigators have already seized the mobile phones of the accused -- Dr Naveen Kichi, the owner of Baby Care New Born Hospital in east Delhi's Vivek Vihar, and Dr Akash, who was on duty at the time of the incident. A senior police officer privy to the investigation said Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) officials under whose jurisdiction the hospital came will also be questioned. Police are also investigating the source of the fire, who was the first to notice it and the time taken by firefighters to reach the spot after receiving information about the incident, said the officer who did not wish to be named. ''We have also written to the health department regarding guidelines for running neonatal hospitals,'' he said. ''As part of the investigation, we have seized the mobile phones of the accused to check their call records and the messages exchanged between them. We will also check if any message was deleted,'' he said. If needed, mobile phones of other staff members will also be checked, he added. Police have summoned Dr Khichi's wife Jagriti, a dentist and co-owner of the neonatal hospital, according to the officials. Police have asked the hospital owners to submit degrees and certificates of the doctors, nurses and paramedic staff employed at the facility. The officials said there was a half an hour delay in informing the authorities about the fire. At least five PCR calls were made between 11.29 pm to 11.32 pm to report the fire. During the investigation, it was found that the fire broke out at 11 pm on Saturday but distress calls to fire and police departments were made only at 11.30 pm, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Surendra Choudhary. ''We are focusing on why the call was not made half an hour earlier when the fire started,'' he said. Kichi, 45, owns three more hospitals in Punjabi Bagh, Faridabad, and Gurugram, the DCP said. ''Police teams will also visit these hospitals for a detailed investigation,'' he said. According to police sources, a list of more than 15 questions has been prepared for the hospital staff and teams will visit Kichi's other three hospitals to check doctors' credentials and if these facilities are following fire norms. ''During the investigation, we also found that some other children's hospitals used to refer newborns to this hospital on a high commission basis. A probe has been launched into this as well,'' a source said. According to the source, someone from the hospital was found to have tipped off the Punjabi Bagh, Faridabad and Gurugram facilities to check their oxygen cylinders and get rid of extra ones. Several safety lapses were found at the five-bed neonatal centre in Vivek Vihar. A total of 27 oxygen cylinders were found inside and outside the hospital building and five of them exploded during the deadly blaze. ''We will check the records of these hospitals to find out how many infants were undergoing treatment there at the time of the fire incident in Delhi. Two doctors and six nurses will be questioned on Tuesday and other staff will be questioned on Wednesday,'' said an official part of the probe. The DGHS officer who had issued a licence to the Baby Care New Born Child Hospital, which expired on March 31, will also be questioned, police said. ''We have written a letter to DGHS, MCD and fire department as there are a few things that we want to know for our investigation,'' said a senior police officer of the eastern range. A Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) source confirmed that the agency has received a letter from the Delhi Police. ''We have received a letter from the Delhi Police enquiring about the building plan authorisation and licence of the hospital,'' the source said. After the fire tragedy, which claimed the lives of six newborns and left five injured, the Delhi government has directed all state-run and private health facilities to conduct fire audits. On Monday, a city court allowed a Delhi Police plea seeking three-day custodial interrogation of Kichi and Akash.
