Rohit lashes out at IPL broadcasters for breaching privacy

Rohit lashes out at IPL broadcasters for breaching privacy India skipper Rohit Sharma on Sunday lashed out at the IPL broadcasters for ''breaching'' cricketers' privacy by recording their conversations with friends and colleagues at training and on match days and then telecasting the contents. Rohit expressed his disappointment after a video involving him and Kolkata Knight Riders assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, in which the former is seen contemplating his future at the Mumbai Indians, went viral. ''The lives of cricketers have become so intrusive that cameras are now recording every step and conversation we are having in privacy with our friends and colleagues, at training or on match days,'' Rohit posted on X. He added, ''Despite asking Star Sports to not record my conversation, it was and was also then played on air, which is a breach of privacy.'' ''The need to get exclusive content and focused only on views and engagement will one day break the trust between the fans, cricketers and cricket. Let better sense prevail.'' Rohit was seen making a request to the broadcasters to shut down the audio while recording him after his chat with Nayar. The conversation between the two took place after MI's IPL fixture against KKR on May 11. The audio of the chat was posted by KKR on their social media handle and fans assumed that the cricketer is speaking about leaving MI after the ongoing season. Following the controversy, the video was taken down by the Knight Riders' social media team. Few days after that, on May 17, Rohit was once again seen having a chat with Dhawal Kulkarni ahead of MI's fixture against Lucknow Super Giants. Seeing himself being recorded, the opener, with folded hands, requested the broadcaster to turn off the audio as one audio has already got him into trouble. ''Bhai audio band karo haan, already ek audio ne mera waat laga diya (Brother please close the audio, one audio has already made things difficult for me),'' said Sharma in the video that also went viral.

T20 World Cup: Team India Can Go All The Way In Dravid-Rohit Combo's Last Assignment

World Test Championship Final: India's coach-captain combine of Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma is all set for their third ICC World Cup competition in the last two years, which will definitely be their final major event when the Men-in-Blue land in the USA and Caribbean for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, starting on June 1. With Dravid showing no interest in continuing, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is searching for a new Head Coach for the men's side and thus the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 will be their last event as coach and captain combine. The question foremost in the minds of Indian cricket fans is whether Dravid and Rohit will be able to spearhead India to the title in the T20 World Cup 2024. Will they be able to help India regain the title after their triumph in the inaugural edition in 2007? This will be their third ICC event since 2022. Their first tilt as a combine at an ICC event was in the T20 World Cup in 2022 in Australia. The Indian team reached the semifinals but lost to eventual Champions England. Next came the 2023 World Test Championship Final against Australia which too ended in disappointment for Dravid and Sharma as they succumbed to the brilliant onslaught by Travis Head. They reached the zenith of their combined as coach and captain at the Men's One-day World Cup at home when India reached the final after a brilliant unbeaten run in the league stage, winning all nine league matches. They handed New Zealand a 70-run defeat in the semifinal to reach the final but went down to Australia by six wickets in the summit clash. While Virat Kohli was the best performer with the bat, amassing an astonishing 765 runs at an average of 95.62 at a strike rate of 90.31, hitting three centuries and six half-centuries. Rohit Sharma was not far behind, hammering 597 runs in 11 innings at an average of 54.27 and a strike rate of 125.94, hitting a century and three half-centuries. On the bowling front, Mohammed Shami was the best in the entire tournament as he claimed 24 wickets in just seven matches to top the charts. Jasprit Bumrah bagged 21 wickets. So, as they get ready for the 2024 T20 World Cup, Dravid and Rohit will be expecting to go all the way in this edition so that they can end their partnership as coach and captain on a glorious note. Considering the way things are going, it may also prove to be the last T20 World Cup for Rohit Sharma, who was a member of the squad that won the inaugural edition in 2007. The selectors have picked a strong 15-member side and besides Virat and Rohit, Ravindra Jadeja, Suryakumar Yadav, Bumrah, Mohd Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav were part of the team that played the 2023 ODI World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on November 19, 2023. The squad has been bolstered by the return of wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who has made a successful return after a 14-month break in the India Premier League. Hardik Pandya, who had pulled out of the 2023 World Cup due to an injury suffered during the clash with Bangladesh in Pune, is also back in action, though his return has not been as successful as that of Pant and Pandya had to suffer the ignominy of being booed by fans in Indian stadiums. The same goes for Axar Patel who too was forced to withdraw from the ODI World Cup due to an injury and is now back for the T20 World Cup. Virat is in tremendous form as he leads the standings for the Orange Cap with 708 runs and though there have been some concerns in some quarters over his strike rate, he has performed his role superbly for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Rohit has managed to score 417 runs in 14 matches hehe struck his first IPL century after many years and ended his campaign with a half-century in Mumbai Indians' final match, though that was in a losing cause. Among the bowlers that have been picked for the T20 World Cup, Bumrah has bowled superbly to claim 20 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 16.80 and an economy rate of 6.48. He was brilliant in taking his best haul of 5-21 this season. Fellow pacer, Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal have claimed 17 wickets apiece at the end of the league phase for their respective teams while Kuldeep Yadav ended IPL 2024 with 16 wickets for Delhi Capitals. The team will, however, be without Mohd Shami who is still recovering from surgery. Pant's return fills a big gap in the T20 World Cup team though KL Rahul had done reasonably well in the ODI World Cup and was the top-scorer for India in the final against Australia. However, the inherent gaps in the selection have left the squad a bit imbalanced with four spinners in the 15-member squad, which many feel is a luxury in conditions in the USA and West Indies. The middle order looks a bit suspect despite the presence of Pant, Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and newcomers Shivam Dube and Sanju Samson. Though there is not much gap between the IPL 2024 and the T20 World Cup, the fact that the players go into the World Cup with sufficient match practice augurs well for the squad. How much will depend on how quickly they recover from the exertions of the IPL and get ready for the mega event. But considering modern training and recovery techniques and equipment, it may not prove a big hassle for the players. So, considering the kind of resources that India have and the form shown by their top players in the IPL, the team managed by Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma is capable of going all the way to the title in the T20 World Cup. It all depends on how they work out the selection of their playing XIs for various opponents and perform on that given day. Indian Squad for T20 World Cup: Rohit Sharma (C), Hardik Pandya (V-C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd Siraj.

Phase five LS polls: EC asks city dwellers to turnout in higher numbers

Phase five LS polls: EC asks city dwellers to turnout in higher numbers On the eve of phase five of Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission on Sunday pointed out that Mumbai, Thane and Lucknow have shown apathy towards voting in the past and asked these city dwellers to turnout in higher numbers. The poll authority noted that in the past these cities have ''suffered'' from urban apathy in voting. ''The Commission specially calls upon these city dwellers to erase the stigma by turning out in higher numbers,'' it said. On May 3 too, while referring to voter turnout in phase two, the Commission had said it was ''disappointed'' with the turnout level in some metropolitan cities. The EC had last month assembled many metro Commissioners here to work out a strategy to fight urban apathy. Urban and youth apathy is described as a phenomenon when young voters and those living in metros fail to turn up at polling stations on election day. So far, the last four phases have registered a voter turnout of 66.95 per cent. Around 45.1 crore electors have exercised their franchise in the last four phases. As in February this year, the total number of voters stood at around 97 crore. Polling for 23 states and union territories, and 379 seats has been completed so far. The EC said 49 seats in eight states and union territories, including Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal will go for polls in phase five on Monday. Besides Lok Sabha, 35 assembly constituencies in Odisha will also go to polls on Monday. Around 9.47 lakh polling officials have been deployed across 94,732 polling stations. Over 8.95 crore people, include 4.69 crore male; 4.26 crore female and 5409 third gender electors are eligible to vote.

Delhi court allows five-day police custody of Bibhav Kumar in Swati Maliwal assault case

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court allowed five-day custodial interrogation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's aide Bibhav Kumar in the Swati Maliwal assault case, sing the police remand was a ecessity in the matter. Metropolitan Magistrate Gaurav Goyal was hearing the application of Delhi Police which was represented by Additional Public Prosecutor Atul Srivastava. The police had sought seven day custody. It is alleged that Kumar, who is Kejriwal's personal assistant, assaulted AAP MP Swati Maliwal at the CM's residence on May 13. Considering the submissions made on behalf of both the parties, I find there is a necessity of police custody remand in the present case. Accordingly, the application moved by the investigating officer (IO) is partly allowed and the accused is remanded to police custody for five days, the court said in its order passed around 12:45 AM Sunday. It noted the prosecution's submissions about the need to take Kumar to Mumbai and other parts of the national capital to collect evidence, which was not possible without the accused's custody. Admittedly, the case is at a nascent stage. Allegations made in the FIR are corroborated in her (Maliwal's) statement recorded by the magistrate on oath and further, it is again corroborated in the medico-legal case (MLC) of the victim or complainant, the court said. The magistrate also observed, I am aware of the view of constitutional courts that the opportunity must be given to the investigating agency to complete the investigation in order to reach the truth of the matter but at the same time the rights of the accused are also to be protected. Asking the Investigating Officer to take Kumar into formal custody, the court directed his medical examination every 24 hours and said the investigating agency would not subject the accused to any torture. It also allowed Kumar to meet his advocate and wife for half an hour each during the police custody. Kumar's application for providing requisite medicines was also allowed. The proceedings which commenced around 9: 15 PM Saturday saw initial arguments by Srivastava following which the magistrate said, I find force in the arguments of the APP (Additional Public Prosecutor) that there were sufficient grounds to arrest the accused without notice. The prosecutor made several arguments, including those mentioned in the remand application and also that the means or weapon by which Kumar assaulted Maliwal had to be recovered. The vehement counter-arguments by Kumar's counsels continued for more than one-and-a-half hours. One of his counsels, Rajiv Mohan, claimed that Maliwal had lodged the FIR elatedly after deliberation and concoction. The Delhi Police arrested Kumar earlier on Saturday and his anticipatory bail plea was subsequently observed as becoming infructuous by a Delhi court.

Book provides alternative view of F N Souza's Art

Book provides alternative view of F N Souza's Art A new illustrated book brings forth concepts from psychoanalysis, feminism and other sources to deconstruct the thought behind artist Francis Newton Souza's work and also discusses the inspirations, themes and significance of his oeuvre. In ''F.N. Souza: The Archetypal Artist'', a collection of 21 articles or essays combining research in art history, Eastern-Western philosophy, classical literature, Jungian analysis, psychology, anthropology, religion and theatre, author Janeita Singh seeks answers to cultural constructs of life, body and sexuality. Souza is considered one of the significant modern Indian painters. One of the founding members of the Progressive Artist's Group in Mumbai in the 1940s, he led a colourful life, eventually leaving India to live in the UK and then the US. He has gained further renown in recent times as his paintings have been valued very highly at art auctions. While not all can own a Souza painting, this book featuring many of his paintings gives readers an opportunity to gaze upon and appreciate them. ''Be prepared to be shocked, bewildered, and amazed. Beware - since most of Souza's art images overlap with your personal unconscious, you will be triggered,'' says Singh. While Souza's paintings continue to visually impact the reader, most notably due to the exaggerated features of many of his female nude images, the author brings forth concepts from psychoanalysis, feminism and other sources to deconstruct the thought behind his work. Souza's paintings of nudes and heads are analysed, as the author deals with aspects such as the male gaze, the perception of the nude, and alternative ways of seeing. As Singh describes her first viewing of a retrospective exhibition of Souza's paintings, ''Not one seemed shy, skinny, shamefaced, self-conscious, self-effacing, shrinking or sheepish... ''They seemed to portray women more naturally than any other female portraits I had seen through Western art history. They were definitely more inclined towards sculptures of Indian temple art, but with a distinctive modernist twist.'' The author writes that Souza was ''deeply connected to nature and revelled in being one with the sea, the breeze, the waves, the flowers and the trees. In complete rhythm with forces of nature, animate and inanimate matter, he expressed his innate vocabulary on his canvas with vitality and vigour''. Her analysis is that Souza mined images from the ''collective unconscious''. Drawing on the concept of the 'anima' and Jungian psychology, Singh celebrates Souza's depiction of the female body, stating that ''Souza's art imbues the female form with self-assurance and authority''. Connecting Souza's depiction of the female nude with female iconography in different parts of the world, the author points out that social codes and religious authority suppressed the expression of individuality. She claims the iconography of the fertility goddess, viewed in modern times as a woman confident in her body and aware of her sexuality is what Souza depicts in his paintings. ''Souza's vision and body of work necessarily reminds us over and over of what we have lost (a healthy outlook to body and sexuality, the repercussions) and how we can stake claim to it again,'' she writes. Published by Niyogi Books, the collection has about 130 images of Souza's artworks in excellent colour and detail.

Contest in Kalyan prestige battle for Maharashtra CM Shinde's son

Contest in Kalyan prestige battle for Maharashtra CM Shinde's son Shrikant Shinde had comfortably won the Kalyan Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra in the last two elections, but the stakes are higher this time as his father, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, now heads a truncated faction of the Shiv Sena following a bitter split in the party. The constituency, part of the Thane district and close to Mumbai, contains densely populated urban areas and industrial belts. It will go to polls on May 20. Shrikant Shinde entered politics in 2014, contesting as a candidate of the then undivided Shiv Sena and won with a margin of 2,50,749 votes. He increased the margin to 3,44,343 in the 2019 general elections. But the political scenario has changed drastically since then, as his father rebelled against party chief Uddhav Thackeray and walked away to join hands with the BJP to become chief minister in June 2022. Uncertainty surrounded Shrikant Shinde's candidature this time as the BJP sensed the possibility of contesting more seats in Maharashtra, and its leader and state minister Ravindra Chavan, MLA from Dombivli, was keen to fight from Kalyan. Of the six assembly segments in Kalyan, three including Dombivli are with the BJP and one each with the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar). As it has three MLAs in the region, the BJP pushed its claim for the Kalyan Lok Sabha seat, but Eknath Shinde remained firm that his party will not cede it. The rival Shiv Sena (UBT) led by Uddhav Thackeray has fielded former corporator Vaishali Darekar-Rane against Shrikant Shinde. Rane had secured more than one lakh votes in this seat in 2009 as a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena candidate, though she lost. Shrikant Kulkarni, a computer salesperson and resident of Dombivli, said the rapid population growth in Kalyan and Dombivli Municipal Corporation limits in the last two decades has put a lot of pressure on water supply and health services. ''Unfortunately, we have not received much of an infrastructure upgrade. There is no good government hospital which we realised during the COVID-19 pandemic. The railway stations used by lakhs of people daily are not big enough, and are never clean. Roads are narrow and vendors occupy footpaths,'' he said. Suman Walecha, a resident of Kalyan city, claimed developmental works have picked up pace, and MP Shinde cannot be blamed for all the woes. ''A strong government at the top is necessary to navigate people in the right direction. Things will eventually get better,'' she said. In February, BJP MLA from Kalyan East, Ganpat Gaikwad, opened fire in a police station on a local leader of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, bringing to the fore the tensions between the two alliance partners in the region. The rivalry between the local leaders of the two parties could be a cause of concern for Shinde. The constituency's demography is diverse. Dombivli has a sizable number of Maharashtrians and South Indians. Ulhasnagar is a predominantly Sindhi area, while Kalyan city and Kalyan rural assembly seats have Gujarati and Marathi-speaking populations. Ambernath has a mix of Sindhis, Gujaratis and Maharashtrians. Mumbra-Kalwa assembly seat, represented by the NCP(SP), has a large number of Muslims. Vaishali Darekar-Rane claimed people are upset with the present regime. ''First and foremost, they are worried about the rising cost of living and behaviour of the current government at the Centre. Rampant abuse of power, induction of tainted people into their party, and bending law as per their wish are not acceptable to the people,'' she said. ''Another factor is the poor infrastructure and lack of urban planning in the constituency. Despite high population growth, there is no assured drinking water supply to major urban areas. Every urban area receives drinking water only for a few hours,'' she told PTI. Asked about these issues, Shrikant Shinde said, ''No doubt that population growth, water availability and good communication network are some of the important issues people want me to address. I have pushed the administration hard to complete several road projects, change pipelines and construct new bridges. Some work proposals are at an advanced level in various departments.'' Shinde also claimed the people have backed his father's decision to form a government with the support of the BJP in Maharashtra.

Government should not tamper with balance sheet of RBI: Former RBI governor D Subbaroa

In his new book -- Just a Mercenary former RBI governor D Subbaroa details his journey from a Sainik School to Mint Road in Mumbai. The book delves into several unknown chapters of Indias economic policy making. In an interaction with Dipak Mondal of the New Indian Express , the former RBI governor shares his view on many economic and financial issues facing the country. You are among a long list of IAS officers who ended up heading the RBI. Do you think bureaucrats make good RBI governors? The RBI over the last 90 years has been served by 25 governors, and they came from different backgrounds. Some were economists, some came from academia, while some were civil servants like Dr (YV) Reddy and me. I dont think you can find a correlation between the background of the governor and his performance if the governor responds to the macroeconomic situation of his time, and delivers the service. Whenever the governors position falls vacant, I think the government must draw from the entire available pool and choose the best person, not necessarily driven by a particular background. There have been references in your book about the tussle between the government and the RBI on policy issues. Do you think central bank of a country can function completely free from government intervention? It should, in theory, function free of interference. And, even if there is interference each of its decision and action should not be influenced by it. The RBI consults all stakeholders in determining its monetary policy. It consults banks, non-banks, financial institutions, financial markets, economists, farmer bodies, microfinance institutions, and takes view of their suggestions and concerns. Similarly, the RBI also consults the Centre because the government is a big stakeholder. The RBI should listen to all stakeholders, including the government, with an open mind, but I believe it should act in its best judgment. Now, there are attempts to interfere, influence or criticise the central bank, but that is not unique to India. It happened in other countries as well -- it happened in Japan, the UK, the US, Brazil, Turkey, and many other countries. But in countries where institutions are not very mature, these tensions or alleged interference might create some problems. The government has been criticised for asking very high dividends from RBIs reserves. What are your views on this issue? Putting pressure on the RBI for allowing a part of the foreign exchange reserves to be used for infrastructure financing is quite different from the dividend issue. The issue of use of forex reserves for infrastructure came up when I was the finance secretary and Dr Reddy was the (RBI) governor. There was a suggestion that RBI is holding a large forex reserve, which was getting very low returns. On the other hand, private companies were borrowing huge amounts of foreign capital at a high rate for building infrastructure. So, the government of that time wanted the RBI to lend a part of the reserve to corporates for infrastructure projects at lower rates. However, there is a hidden cost. If the country is seen tampering with those forex reserves or diverting them for other purposes, the credibility of the country might get eroded. The government should not be tampering with the balance sheet of the central bank, because the balance sheet of the central bank needs to be strong to inspire confidence. On the dividend issue, I wouldnt call it an infringement on the autonomy of the RBI. Under the institutional arrangements, the RBI does make a surplus. Making profit is not one of the objectives of the RBI. Under the law, the RBI is allowed to put away part of surplus for building reserves for stability and then give the rest to the government as dividend. The government because of its own fiscal needs asks for more dividends. The Centres grudge is that RBI is fortifying itself more than necessary. This has always been an issue -- during my time when I was the finance secretary, and when I was the RBI governor. But I think this is an issue that can be settled amicably. You have discussed the issue of rift between the Centre and states for resource allocation. What is your view on the whole issue of fiscal federalism? The Centre-state issues are there in every Federation, theyre not unique to India. They are in developed countries like the US, Canada, theyre in less developed countries like South Africa, Ethiopia, India, and China. So, these issues are common everywhere. I dont think they will go away. The important thing is whether we have institutional arrangements for resolving these issues amicably, without too much politics coming in. In India, we have institutional mechanisms to address this issue. We have the Finance Commission, which decides on the Centre-state issues. We have a mechanism for the central government deciding how much debt they should borrow, and when they can borrow, we have the FRBM Act. I am not suggesting that these are foolproof, but we should be able to resolve them, even if the existing institutions are inadequate to resolve them. You have made an interesting point in your book that while Centre collects 60% of tax revenues, it has spending liability of only 40% and vice versa. Do you think there is a case for higher tax devolution to states? If you take ballpark estimates, the Centre collects 60% and the states collect roughly 40% of the taxes. In the total pool of expenditure, the Centres share is 40% and states share is 60%. So, theres an imbalance and that imbalance is corrected by the award of the Finance Commission, which has gone up over the years and is currently at 41%. States of course, want more, but the Centre has its own inability to give more as it is already fiscally stretched. Are you happy with the current governments performance on the fiscal front? Back in 2021, I had criticised the finance ministers decision to take a longer time for bringing down the fiscal deficit to 3% (as recommended by the FRBM Act). However, over the last four years, I believe the central government has been very responsible in fiscal management and finance minister has reiterated that she would be able to deliver on the target. We have to see after the election, which government comes into office and who becomes the finance minister. I hope whoever comes into office will adhere to the target. Do you think current debt levels are sustainable? No, I have my concern about the current debt levels. The debt-GDP ratio went as high as 90% during the Covid, which is understandable. And it has come down to 80% of the total government sector debt. The FRBM committee said that an appropriate or sustainable target for India is 60% -- 40% for the Centre and 20% for the states. We could probably review that target. But I dont think we can afford to have a much higher debt-GDP ratio, the reason being interest payments are already very high for both Centre and states. You said in book growth prospects and debt sustainability depend on private investment inflows. Do you think private investment is playing out well for India? The numbers show that private investment has not yet picked up. The economy is clocking high growth rates, but the economy is running on one engine -- the engine of public investment. Public investment at these levels cannot be sustained, because we have fiscal constraints. So, to maintain this growth momentum, the economy has to fire on all cylinders -- consumption, private investment, government investment, and net exports. Private investment is a very important component of our growth story and must pick up. It did not pick up over the last 10 years because we had had this twin balance sheet problem, which has since been resolved. Both corporates and banks are now in good enough health to take private investment forward. Capacity utilisation at 80% is coming to saturation levels. Thats the level at which corporates should think of adding to investment capacity. I think private investment is partly inhibited by export demand, which is not robust at the moment. Do you think Indian rupee can be an international currency anytime soon? It can be in theory, but in practice it is quite far away (from becoming international currency). By internationalisation of rupee, we mean the currency is used for settlement of global trades, and in this respect the Chinese experience would be very useful for us. Over the last 10-15 years, China has been successful to some extent in making its currency international. Today a significant amount of Chinese trade is settled in Yuan, but China also has a large footprint in global trade. It is the largest trading nation in the world. So China has been able to internationlise Yuan for trade settlement and not for store of value because China still has capital controls. So, if we want to internationalise our currency the way China did, we must first increase our global trade footprints. We must relax capital controls; our fiscal situation should be more robust, and our institutions of governance must command more credibility.

Congress chief Kharge seeks EC action on BJPs bulldozer remarks

MUMBAI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and other INDIA bloc leaders on Saturday called upon the Election Commission to take action after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders repeated claims that the opposition would run bulldozer over Ram temple if voted to power. Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, Kharge, NCP-SP leader Sharad Pawar and former Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray responded to questions on Modis charge that the INDIA bloc will bulldoze the Ram temple, dilute quota for SC, ST and OBC categories and also restore Article 370 if voted to power. Kharge accused Modi of inciting people over issues that the Congress will never do. Thackeray said the INDIA blocs government will complete construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, while Pawar said it will be the duty of their government to protect not just temples, but the places of worship of all religions. Kharge also said reservation as enshrined in the Constitution will stay. We have never used a bulldozer on anyone. Modi has the habit of lying and inciting people about things which Congress will never do or which are impossible to be implemented, he said, claiming that the INDIA bloc will win 46 out of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra. Kharge said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be part of the alliance. Earlier Mamata Banerjee expressed outside support for the alliance, but now she has said that she will be part of the government, he said. Kharge said Modi speaks of providing free ration of 5 kg to 80 crore people. Our government enacted the Food Security Act and it is bound to implement it. The Congress has now said that we will give 10 kg free ration, he said. Pawar said the previous government had taken the decision of the Food Security Act, but Modi is taking credit for it. Thackeray said the INDIA bloc has several prime ministerial faces, while the BJP has only one and even that is not working. Now they cannot replace the face at the fag end of poll campaign. We have decided what we should do when we get the majority, he said. Attacking the BJP and Modi for calling his party nakli (fake) Shiv Sena, Thackeray said BJP will call RSS as nakli Sangh. Citing BJP chief JP Nadda, he said that BJP is capable and runs its own affairs, while the RSS is an ideological front and does its own work, Thackeray said, BJP wants to disassociate itself with an organisation that gave birth to it. The jumla era will end on June 4 and achhe din will come when INDIA bloc comes to power, Thackeray said. Will protect places of worship of all religions: Pawar Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge accused Modi of inciting people over issues that the Congress will never do, while Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray said the INDIA blocs government will complete construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. NCP(SP) chief Sharad Pawar said their government will protect not just temples, but the places of worship of all religions.

Assault could have been fatal, Bibhav Kumar evasive: Delhi Police says in its remand paper

Assault could have been fatal, Bibhav Kumar evasive: Delhi Police says in its remand paper The Delhi Police in its remand paper submitted late Saturday evening seeking seven days custody of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's aide Bibhav Kumar regarding the alleged assault on AAP Rajya Sabha member Swati Maliwal said that it was a ''serious case'' where the ''brutal assault'' could have turned ''fatal''. Metropolitan Magistrate Gaurav Goyal, who sent Kumar to five-day police custody, was told by the investigating agency that he did not cooperate with the police and had been evasive in his replies. ''This is a very serious case where a Member of Parliament, a public figure, has been brutally assaulted which could have been fatal. Despite specific questions, the accused has not cooperated in the investigation and has been evasive in his replies,'' said the remand paper signed by North District Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Anjitha Chepyala. The remand application said that Maliwal's testimony before the magistrate was corroborated by the medical evidence. According to Maliwal's allegations, Kumar screamed, threatened and used abusive language against her, besides being ''brutally assaulting'', dragging and banging her head on a centre table, the report said. It said that the ''most vital evidence'' was the digital video record (DVR) of the spot but it was yet to be provided to the police. According to the plea seeking police custody, a junior engineer in the CM's residence, after admitting that he did not have access to the place where the DVR and CCTV cameras were installed, provided a video of the dining room but it was later found to be blank at the time of the alleged incident. The remand application said that on Saturday, Kumar was present at the chief minister's residence and after being questioned, provided evasive replies. ''His presence at the scene of the crime (SOC) raises a strong possibility of tampering with crucial evidence, including electronic evidence. The accused is an influential person and having worked more than nine years in an authoritative position can influence, and pressure the witnesses in the CM house,'' it said. Explaining the reasons for police custody, the application said after being terminated as the CM's personal secretary in April 2024, Kumar was still working in the CM's residence and needed to be quizzed about the capacity and authority under which he was working. It said another case was registered against Kumar in Noida for allegedly assaulting an on-duty public servant. ''Since a brutal attack is made on a public figure who is a sitting MP, a sustained interrogation is very much required to find out the motive behind brutal attack and to ascertain the conspiracy angles or involvement of some person or organisation having inimical to our country,'' the paper said. It said that according to Kumar, he had formatted his mobile in Mumbai on Friday and that his mobile phone was password protected. ''Without the personal presence and assistance of the accused, as this instrument is password protected, the phone and its apps cannot be accessed. Also, he has to be taken to an expert to retrieve the mobile data and to ascertain the factum of formatting of the mobile phone of the accused, which is an important piece of evidence,'' the plea for remand said. It said that Kumar could threaten witnesses and tamper evidence as he was in a ''position of command'' and also had ''access to the SOC''.
