Contest in Kalyan prestige battle for Maharashtra CM Shinde's son

Contest in Kalyan prestige battle for Maharashtra CM Shinde's son Shrikant Shinde had comfortably won the Kalyan Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra in the last two elections, but the stakes are higher this time as his father, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, now heads a truncated faction of the Shiv Sena following a bitter split in the party. The constituency, part of the Thane district and close to Mumbai, contains densely populated urban areas and industrial belts. It will go to polls on May 20. Shrikant Shinde entered politics in 2014, contesting as a candidate of the then undivided Shiv Sena and won with a margin of 2,50,749 votes. He increased the margin to 3,44,343 in the 2019 general elections. But the political scenario has changed drastically since then, as his father rebelled against party chief Uddhav Thackeray and walked away to join hands with the BJP to become chief minister in June 2022. Uncertainty surrounded Shrikant Shinde's candidature this time as the BJP sensed the possibility of contesting more seats in Maharashtra, and its leader and state minister Ravindra Chavan, MLA from Dombivli, was keen to fight from Kalyan. Of the six assembly segments in Kalyan, three including Dombivli are with the BJP and one each with the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar). As it has three MLAs in the region, the BJP pushed its claim for the Kalyan Lok Sabha seat, but Eknath Shinde remained firm that his party will not cede it. The rival Shiv Sena (UBT) led by Uddhav Thackeray has fielded former corporator Vaishali Darekar-Rane against Shrikant Shinde. Rane had secured more than one lakh votes in this seat in 2009 as a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena candidate, though she lost. Shrikant Kulkarni, a computer salesperson and resident of Dombivli, said the rapid population growth in Kalyan and Dombivli Municipal Corporation limits in the last two decades has put a lot of pressure on water supply and health services. ''Unfortunately, we have not received much of an infrastructure upgrade. There is no good government hospital which we realised during the COVID-19 pandemic. The railway stations used by lakhs of people daily are not big enough, and are never clean. Roads are narrow and vendors occupy footpaths,'' he said. Suman Walecha, a resident of Kalyan city, claimed developmental works have picked up pace, and MP Shinde cannot be blamed for all the woes. ''A strong government at the top is necessary to navigate people in the right direction. Things will eventually get better,'' she said. In February, BJP MLA from Kalyan East, Ganpat Gaikwad, opened fire in a police station on a local leader of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, bringing to the fore the tensions between the two alliance partners in the region. The rivalry between the local leaders of the two parties could be a cause of concern for Shinde. The constituency's demography is diverse. Dombivli has a sizable number of Maharashtrians and South Indians. Ulhasnagar is a predominantly Sindhi area, while Kalyan city and Kalyan rural assembly seats have Gujarati and Marathi-speaking populations. Ambernath has a mix of Sindhis, Gujaratis and Maharashtrians. Mumbra-Kalwa assembly seat, represented by the NCP(SP), has a large number of Muslims. Vaishali Darekar-Rane claimed people are upset with the present regime. ''First and foremost, they are worried about the rising cost of living and behaviour of the current government at the Centre. Rampant abuse of power, induction of tainted people into their party, and bending law as per their wish are not acceptable to the people,'' she said. ''Another factor is the poor infrastructure and lack of urban planning in the constituency. Despite high population growth, there is no assured drinking water supply to major urban areas. Every urban area receives drinking water only for a few hours,'' she told PTI. Asked about these issues, Shrikant Shinde said, ''No doubt that population growth, water availability and good communication network are some of the important issues people want me to address. I have pushed the administration hard to complete several road projects, change pipelines and construct new bridges. Some work proposals are at an advanced level in various departments.'' Shinde also claimed the people have backed his father's decision to form a government with the support of the BJP in Maharashtra.

Not Kohli's knock or Maxwell's spell, Yash Dayal picks Dhoni's wicket as game-changing moment for RCB

Not Kohli's knock or Maxwell's spell, Yash Dayal picks Dhoni's wicket as game-changing moment for RCB Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer Yash Dayal feels MS Dhoni's dismissal in the final over was the turning point of a nervy, do-or-die clash with Chennai Super Kings in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). The RCB prevailed in the test of redemption against the CSK as they became the final team to qualify for the playoffs. Last season, during the Gujarat Titans clash against Kolkata Knight Riders, Rinku Singh smashed five towering sixes in Dayal's over to seal victory for his team. A year later, Dayal found himself in a similar situation. With 17 needed off the final over, MS Dhoni tonked a 110m six out of the park, foreshadowing a similar outcome for the pacer. But Dayal struck back and removed Dhoni to put RCB just a step away from the final spot in the playoffs. Relying on the slower back-of-the-hand deliveries, he conceded just one run in the next four balls to seal a 27-run win for RCB. I think the turning point, I was bowling the last and the most crucial over, I conceded a six on the first delivery and the next ball, I got Mahi (MS Dhoni) bhai's wicket. So maybe it was the turning point of the game according to me, Dayal said in the post-match press conference. The only thing that was going through my mind was to bowl a good delivery. I didn't have to look at the scoreboard, I just had to bowl well. So that confidence helped me while executing (the final over), he added. Dayal's career has completely turned around since he joined Bengaluru. His performances this season have helped him to put Rinku's heroic five sixes aside. The backing that he has received from the management has certainly played its role. The biggest benefit that I got after joining RCB is that I have received proper backing. The management told me that I am an important player and I will be backed from beginning to end. All I want to say is the result of their decision to back is paying off, Dayal stated. Under a situation that exuded pressure, Dayal pointed out the role of RCB captain Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli's presence which kept the pressure off the youngsters. Faf du Plessis is an unbelievable captain. One of the biggest things is that he is an athlete so positive vibes are always there on the ground. Youngsters don't feel pressure when Faf and Kohli are present on the field, Dayal said. RCB will finish the group stage in the fourth spot with 14 points and a net run rate of 0.459. The final two games of the group stage will decide the opponent that Bengaluru will face in the knockout stage. (ANI)

TN farmers fear opening river sand quarries will lead to water crisis

CHENNAI: The state governments attempt to reopen river sand quarries in the delta districts after nearly nine months has evoked mixed reactions from farmers, sand lorry owners and civil engineers. Farmers have voiced strong concerns, urging the government not to reopen the quarries, as they fear the extraction of sand from riverbeds will affect water storage and flow in the region. KV Elankeeran, president of Federation of Cauvery Delta Farmers Association, told TNIE, The use of machines to take sand from riverbeds in the Cauvery region has led to water scarcity, especially in areas like Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai. These areas have seen a significant drop in groundwater levels. Pointing out that the neighbouring states such as Karnataka and Kerala have started using manufactured sand (M-sand) and plastering manufactured sand (P-sand), Elankeeran urged the state government to reconsider reopening the quarries. On the other hand, S Yuvaraj, president of Tamil Nadu State Sand Lorry Owners Association, emphasised the importance of river sand for quality construction. However, he suggested avoiding the use of machines for mining in river beds. Instead of machines, manpower can be used for sand extraction. The ban on machinery use in the Palar river should be applied to other rivers as well, Yuvaraj suggested. He noted the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court has instructed the water resources department not to use machines for excavating river beds. After the Model Code of Conduct for the parliament elections is lifted, Yuvaraj said, he is planning to submit a detailed proposal for mining activities to the government. MC Vasantha Kumar, secretary of Metropolitan Civil Engineering Association told TNIE, Gujarat has a council for professional civil engineers, and Karnataka recently passed a bill for their own council. We have been requesting the state government for long to set up a similar council. He added, If the council is established, civil engineers, along with the government, can spread awareness among the public regarding balanced use of both river sand and M-Sand. Highlighting that the construction cost has gone up from `2,150 to `2,450 per square feet, he said this is the right time to intervene in the issue. A senior government official responded saying, While discussions on reopening quarries in delta districts are under way, we are yet to decide on the number of quarries. After the MCC is lifted, the government will take a policy decision, and quarry operations may start by the end of June or July.

Biden tariffs, Xis wei-chi strategy and India's options

Meanwhile: an instructive term that helps convey the perils of inattention. The parade of political rhetoric in Indias 44-day-long election has sucked out the oxygen critical for debate. As Indias parties grapple with words for votes, the spectre of a trade war is playing out. Ideally, matters concerning livelihood must occupy centre-stage, but are sadly waylaid by emotive issues. The fact is what happens in the global economyas contestants wrestle with identity and ideologyhas implications for the incoming government. This week saw the Biden administration in the US imposing a steep hike in tariffs on a wide-ranging list of imports from China. It has trebled the duties on steel, aluminium, batteries, components and critical minerals to 25 percent, doubled duties on semiconductors and solar cells to 50 percent, introduced new levies on ship-to-shore cranes at 25 percent and on medical and other protective equipment at 50 percent, and ramped up tariff on electric cars from 25 to 100 percent. The case for raising tariffs has long been in the baking. There is the goal of economic resiliencethe pandemic unravelled the fact that the global supply chain was verily a Chinese supply chain. There is also the political compulsion. There is a rare and strong consensus in polarised US on the need to constrain/corral China. Bidens rhetoric is not dissimilar from that of Trump when in 2018 he imposed tariffs on $300 billion of Chinese goods. The mild schadenfreude in India must confront the fact that the Trump tariffs on India are still in place. The ratcheting up of tariffs triggered a calibrated response from China it has termed the new tariffs a unilateral action in violation of World Trade Organization rules and vowed to defend its interests. As yet, there is no signal of retaliation. Interestingly, the action has neither shaken nor stirred the Chinese stock markets. Indeed, the Chinese state agency Xinhua quoted Nietzsche to troll the US action stating, What does not kill you makes you stronger. Unlike other economies that play checkmate chess, the Chinese play wei chi ,where the goal is to conquer through encirclement. If China appears to have brushed off the new tariff regime, it isnt about what it will do, but what it has already engineered to circumvent the new regime. China has used a pathway via Vietnam and Mexicowhich are reliant on Chinese inputsto reach the American consumer. Unsurprisingly, in 2023 Mexico emerged as the largest trading partner of the US. In April, US trade representative Katherine Tai pointed out that China has used non-market practicesstate-subsidised investment in emerging sectors to create capacity, and carve market share with predatory pricingand that steel is coming through the backdoor as Mexican steel. It used a similar template to capture markets in EVs, batteries and solar panels. The route is effective as Mexico enjoys privileged access to US markets as a member of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement. A report by the Coalition for a Prosperous America, a non-profit outfit, reveals that Chinese companies are investing in manufacturing units in Mexico, Chinese FDI into Mexico is rising and US imports from Mexico contain an increasing amount of Chinese value. Indeed, during his recent visit to Hungary, Serbia (the largest recipients of Chinese FDI in the last three years) and France, Xi Jinping explored the potential of expanding the market for Chinese EVs and other goods by inducting China into the supply chain in Europe. Why and how does this matter to India? Soon after the announcement of Bidens tariffs, the IMF cautioned that trade restrictions lead to fragmentation and could dent global growth by 0.2-7 percent, depending on the magnitude. Any slowdown in global growth has implications for the aspirations of a billion Indians. Indias challenge is that 45 percent of its workforce is dependent on agriculture and lives on a sixth of national incomethey must be moved to higher-yield sectors. Politically, if there is one question that has dominated the elections it is the issue of employment. On Friday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman underlined the governments aim to boost Indias participation in global value chains and expand manufacturing. Indias ambition faces a barrage of challenges. Advanced economies are fashioning industrial policies to re-shore manufacturing despite warnings by IMF that industrial policy is not a magic cure for slow growth. Ironically, they are doing exactly what they were scornful of. The glossary of rising protectionism includes the Inflation Reduction Act and Chips Act in the US, and the Net Zero Industry Act and Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism in the EU. Politics matters and so does cost economics. India must capitalise the headline attention of global funds and consultancies to attract investments away from Vietnam, Mexico or Indonesia. It needs to scale up skills for smart manufacturing, clean up its labour laws, enable plug-and-play sites and unclog the regulatory cholesterol. The stellar performance of Apple and others in India must be leveraged for branding. A good start would be to understand what is it that Tamil Nadu or Gujarat is doing right to woo investments, create jobs and catalyse growth, and deploy the template across the economy. Hopefully, at some election in the future, competitive ideas for prosperity and not compulsive rhetoric about identity will define the mandate. IPL 2024: Delight for RCB, heartbreak for CSK

BENGALURU: A month ago, Bengaluru had seemingly gone beyond the point of no return. After eight matches, they had won one and lost seven. Now, in the most incredible of circumstances, they have engineered a run to the knock-out stages for the ages. In a do-or-die clash against Chennai, five-time champions Chennai, they won by 27 runs for their sixth win on the trot. In the process, they leapfrogged MS Dhoni & Co (was this his last match?) on NRR. In a couple of days, they will walk out in Ahmedabad, the scene of where the rejuvenation began against Gujarat when Will Jacks and Virat Kohli finished a 200+ run chase with more than three overs to go. When the match began on Saturday, Kohli and Faf du Plessis, as they have done lots of times already in the second half of the campaign in 2024, started like a train (31/0 in three overs). After all, they knew what was at stake play-off spot for them and what to expect rain interruptions. Having lost the toss, they had no choice but to start in fourth gear. And that is exactly what they did. Kohli took on Tushar Deshpande two sixes in the third over, one of which hit the roof to set the momentum, but that is when rain had put the brakes. A much-needed relief for Chennai captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who immediately brought on the spinners when play resumed. Maheesh Theekshana and Mitchell Santner operated from either end something that probably should have happened even before the rain break keeping the RCB openers quiet. And it worked. In the next three overs, they could manage only 12 runs. Kohli decided to step up. He, first went hard against Ravindra Jadeja and then against Santner to keep the boundaries coming. It is a facet of Kohli we are seeing this season, attempting to take on the spinners at will. Much to the delight of the crowd, he even employed his newfound slog sweep to smash Jadeja into the stands. And once he fell to Santner, Du Plessis did his part by smashing Jadeja for 20 runs. It was almost as if they were applying the mathematics rule of two negatives (match-ups) making a positive. Santner, once again, came to the rescue, getting rid of Du Plessis but it only brought a better hitter of spin to the crease Rajat Patidar. Now until a couple of weeks ago, it seemed like the black magic spell that was cast on Patidar had followed him into the RCB dressing room. But it all wore off in Hyderabad. It is no coincidence that RCB started winning once he started taking apart spinners for fun in the middle-overs. Such was his spin-hitting that Gaikwad turned to pacers once he came in a move that provided to be anticlimactic this time. Patidar hit Simarjeet Singh and then Theekshana came, followed by Thakur, who too was taken for 17 runs. With Cameron Green for support, Patidar became the hero RCB needed. They added 71 runs from 28 balls as RCB looked well set for score closer to 220. That is when Patidar fell, trying to hit Thakur into the stands. When things are going your way, you seldom put your foot wrong. RCB were in one such zone as they promoted Dinesh Karthik ahead of Glenn Maxwell, ensuring Gaikwad did not finish Jadejas quota of overs. Karthik hit a six and a four before passing the baton to Maxwell. The Australian started with a top edge for four and followed it with two more boundaries as RCB posted 218/5 in 20 overs. In the end, it proved to be good enough for the hosts. Brief scores: Royal Challengers Bengaluru 218/5 in 20 ovs (Du Plessis 54, Kohli 47, Patidar 41) bt Chennai Super Kings 191/7 in 20 ovs (Rachin 61, Jadeja 42 n.o; Dayal 2/42).

Once I got my fifty, Virat said....: RCB's Will Jacks on century against Gujarat Titans

Once I got my fifty, Virat said....: RCB's Will Jacks on century against Gujarat Titans England all-rounder Will Jacks, who had a memorable Indian Premier League (IPL) debut season with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), opened up on his remarkable century against Gujarat Titans (GT), his admiration for star batter Virat Kohli and the love he has received from the fans. Notably, Will Jacks along with England players Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone and Reece Topley has left their respective Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise to join the national senior's side for the T20 series against Pakistan starting from May 22 onwards. In eight matches for RCB, Jacks scored 230 runs at an average of 32.85 and a strike rate of over 175, with a century and fifty. His best score is 100*. He also took two wickets for his side. He was brought by RCB ahead of the 2023 season, but could not feature back then due to injury. A very big moment of his IPL career so far was the carnage he unleashed on Gujarat Titans (GT) on April 28. Chasing 201 to win, Jacks reached his half-century in 31 balls. Within the span of the next 10 balls, Jacks raced to his maiden IPL ton, achieving the fastest-ever acceleration for a century in the tournament's history. Jacks' scored an unbeaten 100* in 41 balls, with five fours and 10 sixes and had an explosive 166-run stand with star batter Virat Kohli, who himself scored an unbeaten 70* in 44 balls in a successful run-chase. Speaking about his century, Jacks revealed that once he reached his half-century, Virat signalled him that he did not want to face any balls and encouraged him to keep going. As soon as I hit that last one, I knew it was going miles. It snuck up on me. I only got to my fifty the over before. I was just trying to get there as quickly as possible and win the game. Once I got my fifty, Virat was like, 'I do not want to face any balls - keep going, he said as quoted by ESPNCricinfo. When Mohit Sharma came on [in the 15th over], that was my match-up. I was going to take him down there, because I had faced him for three or four balls before and I had got a good eye of him. I knew that was my time, and after that there was no reason to stop. I did not realise I could have got a hundred until we needed seven to win. Obviously a big celebration, a hug from Virat, and then I realised what I had done. It was amazing. I just thought, 'I am 100 not out in an IPL game - and two weeks ago, I was not even playing.' There has been a lot of attention since but I have loved the experience, he said. Jacks said that he has saved a picture of Virat's reaction on a six that took him to 94 in the favourites folder of his phone gallery and aims to get it printed. He said though nothing has changed for him, Virat hyping him up from the non-striker's end stays really special for him. Nothing has changed realistically: I have just scored some runs. I have always known I have been good enough, but to really dominate like that just lets everyone else know what I can do. But to do it with Virat, and have him hyping me up like that? It is special, said Jacks. They (GT) do have three high-quality spinners [Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmed and Sai Kishore] and I did not face a ball of seam until my 17th ball. I just needed to settle in, and Virat really helped me with that. He took ownership of the partnership and the risks while I was getting going, and made sure that we did not fall behind - and that I did not have to do something really unnecessary, he added. Jacks, who had spent 10-plus years watching IPL on his TV, was taken aback by the support shown for RCB by fans. He also said that meeting Virat for the first time was surreal. Everyone told me their fans were the best but now I have seen how crazy it is... I kind of expected it, but it obviously still takes you by surprise, he said. The same is true of the adulation for Kohli, and adjusting to calling him a team-mate. When he first walked in and I first met him, that was surreal. Seeing his aura, how people look at him, the following... even if you see a footballer in public at home, it is not like that. It is eye-opening. Everywhere we go - all the airports, every street - the support is incredible, he added. At 25 years of age, Jacks said that his debut IPL came at a perfect time and had it came earlier, he would not have been ready. He also said that everyone in the team is very great and share their experiences and opened up on his closeness to Australian stars Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green. It would have been good to come earlier, but I would not have been ready. I went to the Big Bash when I was 20 and it was great, but my game was not ready. I did not know what I was doing, and I did crap. I am happy where I am now: I can come in and try to dominate, instead of just going, 'Well, I'll try to get some runs, he said. I cannot speak highly enough of it [the team]. Everyone is willing to share their experiences. He (Maxwell) been outstanding with me. He has given me loads of his time, said Jacks about Maxwell. Jacks and Green were sitting next to one another in the team bus when their respective sides selected them for the T20 World Cup. He got called by George Bailey, then I got called by Motty [Matthew Mott] about ten minutes later, Jacks says, laughing. They might face one another on June 8 in Barbados. This will be Jacks' first World Cup and he admitted being disappointed to miss out on the 2022 T20 WC and 2023 50-over WC. I thought I was close but obviously it is tough to get in, which is understandable. My biggest goal for the year was to play in the World Cup - and hopefully win it, obviously - and this has given me confidence that I belong there. I know I am ready for it, he said. (ANI)

LBW decision off last ball of 2019 IPL final was turning point in my career: Umpire Nitin Menon

HYDERABAD: Nitin Menon is the lone representative from the county in the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires. With the BCCI assigning him the responsibility to officiate in the 2024 IPL final, Menon, who hails from Indore, is on the verge of surpassing the record held by Australia's Simon Taufel. This will be his sixth consecutive IPL final, one more than Taufel. Menon has already officiated in two T20I World Cups and one ODI World Cup and is ready to officiate in the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. He recently stood in his 100th IPL match between Gujarat and Bengaluru in Ahmedabad and is set to surpass S Venkataraghavan's record of 125 international matches as an on-field Indian umpire in the T20 World Cup. Firoz Mirza, in an exclusive chat with the renowned umpire, got him the open up on topics like his best decisions, the life of an umpire and how technology is helping them evolve. Excerpts: On your switch from domestic cricketer to umpire When I was playing, till U-19 I was doing well. But when I went past that stage, the performances were not that good so I was dropped from the team. I was struggling to get a place in the Madhya Pradesh team. That time my father gave me advice that the BCCI was going to conduct examinations for umpires, so why don't you appear in it and have an alternative career. So I went ahead, took exams and cleared it. Actually, I found umpiring more challenging and more rewarding than playing cricket. Hours of net batting, power hitting irrespective of formats during Andhra camp: Reddy's mantra for success On his thought process I weighed all the pros and cons. It was not an easy decision as I had been playing cricket for 15 years. Suddenly you have to give up that. You have worked hard for 15 years and suddenly switching to another profession was not easy. Ultimately, I took the risk at 23. I took the risk and I can say that it has paid off. On how he copes with his schedule Like players, we have to travel a lot. But we are used to it now. When the domestic season starts, it's quite hectic. Because after games, you have to travel to different venues. But now we are used to that constant travelling. What I do is that once my game is finished, I actually don't go and watch live cricket again. Because once the game is over, it's done for me. The two-to-three-day gap that I get between games, I don't watch much cricket. That's my downtime, which helps me focus on the next game. So that break is something I cherish. I don't want to discuss or talk much about cricket during that time. On his mental and physical fitness routines During game time, when we stand for four to five days, 90 overs in a day, our fitness is automatically tested. Off the field, we hit the gym, do cardio and weight training, all those things. For mental fitness, I haven't done a lot of yoga or such activities, but for me, if I'm enjoying the game, then I'm automatically focused on it. I enjoy the game, and that keeps me mentally ready and prepared. As far as mental toughness or preparedness is concerned, I don't do anything extra. Enjoying the game keeps me positive and focused. I work out six days a week, alternating between cardio and weight training, especially focussing on lower body and core muscles. Standing six to seven hours requires strong legs and core. I keep Sundays free. T20 World Cup: Selectors keep faith in old in youngest format When did you start doing physical exercises? Since I was playing, I knew what to do and what not to do. There hasn't been a gap for me between playing and umpiring regarding fitness. My fitness schedule has always been ongoing. On statistics, success rate of decisions and whether it puts you under pressure When I walk onto the field, I don't think about getting decisions right or wrong. I focus on giving my best, and the results take care of themselves. So basically, I focus on my process and not the end result. Even if I make one or two errors in a game, it doesn't affect me too much. I understand it's part and parcel of my game. Being a human, I am bound to make errors. I focus more on the correct decisions I've made in various formats of the game. For me, that's the positive way of looking at things rather than focusing on errors I have committed. That makes me more aware and focused and keeps me motivated. On remembering any incorrect decisions For me, as I said, all errors are the same. I don't keep my errors in my mind because they are part and parcel of the game and I don't have to worry much about it. I learn from them and move on. I focus on the good decisions I've made, which helps me stay positive for future games. On a decision you are proud of Two decisions come to mind. The first was in the 2019 IPL final when CSK needed two runs off the last ball against MI in Hyderabad. CSK didn't have any reviews left. So for me to get that LBW decision right off the last ball bowled by Lasith Malinga was very important because if by any chance I had committed an error at point of time, CSK would have thought they lost the final because of me. It was a career-changing decision for me. In 2019, I was not part of the elite panel. I was just on the international panel of umpires. BCCI trusted me and thought I could do a good job in the IPL final. So it was a big moment for me. I am happy I could repay the faith the BCCI and IPL put in me. So that is the one decision I cherish. The second decision was during the last Ashes when I gave Steve Smith not out for a run-out. There was a lot of criticism from a part of the commentary team saying how can I give that not out. Probably they were unaware of the law but I was very convinced and assured as the third umpire that the decision I am arriving at was as per the law. On the law The law is about the complete removal of the bail. The bail should be removed from both ends, not just one end. In that scenario, only one end of the bail was removed when Steve Smith was outside the crease, but when both ends came off, he was inside the crease. There was confusion among some players and spectators that it was out since one part of the bail was up. It was a challenging and crucial decision as Smith is one of the best players in the world. At that time, the match was in the balance. So I am very proud that I was able to make that decision. Throughout the process of making that decision I was very composed and confident that yes 'I was going in the right direction'. On the reputation of players and if that plays a role in the decision-making process Honestly, it has not affected me till now. I am sure if you ask other umpires, they will also say no. They don't think whether a big star is batting or a big star is bowling. For us, it's bat and ball, we just watch the ball and try to make the right decision without thinking about the players involved. If we think along those lines, then we will put more pressure on us and that might not be a good sign for umpires as that could make us more prone to errors. On the role of technology in aiding the process I love technology. It is very helpful because when I see my decisions getting stamped by the technology, I know I am watching the game, I am watching the ball correctly. I am hearing everything correctly. So when technology backs my decision, I get that self-assurance. Also sometimes, when you make a decision, there is a little doubt. Did I get it right or wrong? So when technology backs it, I know I am thinking in the right way, my perception is correct. Let's say even if I get a decision wrong and technology corrects me, it only helps me to understand I have to get better to get the decision right next time. The technology is there to help us. On tech positively impacting umpires One advantage is that technology corrects errors we might make on the field. But because of the technology, that error gets corrected so there is no animosity between umpires and players especially when it is a crucial stage of the match. So I think technology is very important and when a team has DRS, they can challenge the umpire's decision and when it gets corrected, everything is back to normal. There is no bad blood between umpires and players. On watching videos Not regularly, but sometimes I do. We get immediate feedback on the field through replays on the big screen or we can ask the third umpire what the technology is saying about that decision. So, generally, we don't have to go and see videos of the decisions we have made. But if I feel the need to do that I do it sometimes. On your form going into the World Cup I feel that I am in a good headspace going into the T20 World Cup because IPL is a big platform, a challenging tournament with a lot of pressure. A lot of big players playing here so if you officiate here and get most of the decisions right, it gives you confidence that I am watching the ball well, hearing it well despite the capacity crowd. On hearing sounds in a full, noisy stadium Sometimes we can hear the sounds despite the noise but sometimes we cannot, so we cannot guess. So for us, it's important to gather the clues, such as sounds, players' reactions, and trusting our eyes and ears. All these factors come into the picture when we make specific decisions like caught behind or an inside edge especially when it is full inside. On getting the work-life balance I don't get enough time with my family, but I do get some time. My family understands my job, they understand my job requires me to travel a lot. That's a big advantage for me because my father was also an umpire and used to play for MP, he was also on the road for most of the time. So from there, it has transferred to me. So the family understands it's a part and parcel of my job.

Gujarat BJP appoints migrant workers as campaigners to woo UP voters

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat BJP has launched a unique campaign to attract voters from Uttar Pradesh. Thousands of migrant workers residing in Surat, Gujarat, are calling their relatives in the Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh, urging them to vote for the BJP. During these conversations, they highlight the Gujarat model of development. As an incentive, participants in this effort will have the opportunity to meet Gujarat BJP president CR Patil for lunch or dinner. This election campaign strategy is credited to Gujarat BJP president CR Patil. During the campaign in Gujarat, he informed North Indian workers and supporters that their task was not only to secure victory for the party in Gujarat but also to campaign for the BJP in their native regions. Workers who had the time were encouraged to visit their hometowns and campaign locally. Those unable to take leave due to job constraints were asked to stay in areas like Surat, Bharuch, and Ahmedabad and motivate their relatives to vote for the BJP through phone calls. North Indian BJP leader and former Surat BJP corporator Yajuvendra Dubey stated, For this campaign, small centers are set up near companies, factories, markets, or tea shops. After their work shifts, workers are provided with facilities to call their close contacts. Additionally, the name, mobile number, and locality information of the people they contact should be recorded. Dubey further added, The party has asked these worker-supporters to call at least 20 people, with no maximum limit. Those who perform exceptionally well will be allowed to dine with Gujarat BJP president CR Patil after the election results. Avadesh Mishra, who runs a Pan shop in Surat and is one of the callers reaching out to Purvanchal for BJP support, said, In many areas, people are unaware of the significant development projects in their own region. Many voters don't know about the development work done by the BJP central and state governments. We are sharing this information with our acquaintances and relatives, which has changed their perspective. It is worth noting that hundreds of thousands of people from UP and Bihar reside and earn their living in various cities across Gujarat. The BJP has leveraged them as brand ambassadors.

ECI crackdown leads to seizure of Rs 8,889 cr so far

Cops seized a flat, a car, a bike and other materials worth Rs 70 lakh from the arrested. Picture shows the cash seized from the gang - DC/S.Surender Reddy New Delhi: The Election Commissions determined and concerted assault on money power and inducements in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections has resulted in staggering seizures worth Rs 8,889 crore by the agencies. Enhanced vigil against inducements including drugs and psychotropic substances has resulted in big seizure actions and continuous surge. Drug seizures have been maximum. According to Election Commission of India (ECI), regular follow-ups and reviews of districts and agencies in areas of expenditure monitoring, precise data interpretation and active participation of enforcement agencies have led to this significant spurt in seizures since March 1. The seizure of drugs, liquor, precious metals, freebies, cash influences elections in varying degrees, some flowing directly as inducement while others through reduced levels of circulation of money. This, thereby, adversely impacts linkages of proceeds of illegal activities to political campaigns. The ECI has laid special emphasis on seizure of narcotics and psychotropic substances. Analysis of data found that States and UTs which used to be transit zones are increasingly becoming consumption territories. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar addressing the nodal agencies during one of the review visits had said Precise intel-based collaborative efforts by agencies against drugs and narcotics is need of the hour to root out the role of dirty money of drug trade in elections and more important and holistically, to save future of youth and thereby, country. The contribution of seizure of drugs is Rs. 3,958 crores which is 45 per cent of total seizures. The Commission led by CEC Rajiv Kumar along with EC Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu held meetings with DG, Narcotics Control Bureau to take up analytics-based proactive action for ensuring action by dedicated Nodal Officers of NCB. Similarly active involvement of DRI, Indian Coast Guard, State police and other agencies was ensured during ongoing elections. All these measures have led to significant seizures in two months post announcement of polls. With increasing intensity of campaigning in last three phases, the ECI is keeping close tab on attempts at influencing voters through inducements and has directed the CEOs and enforcement agencies to step up the vigil. The crusade against drugs and other inducements by the Commission will continue. Gujarat ATS, NCB and Indian Coast Guard, in joint operations have made three high-value seizures of drugs in just three days amounting to Rs 892 crore.

PM Modi provoking people, EC should take action: Mallikarjun Kharge

PM Modi provoking people, EC should take action: Mallikarjun Kharge Reacting to the charge of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that, SP, Congress will run bulldozer over Ram Temple if voted to power, Congress president Malliakarjun Kharge said that the former is provoking people and the Election Commission should take action. He also accused PM Modi of supporting the illegal Mahayuti government in Maharashtra. We have not used bulldozers to date... The Election Commission should take action against those who make instigating speeches. The Prime Minister himself is doing it. He is provoking people. After our government comes, everything will be protected as per our Constitution, we will follow the Constitution, Kharge told reporters here. He was speaking at a press conference in Mumbai. Nationalist Congress Party (SP) Sharad Pawar and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackery were also present. INDIA bloc will win 46 out of 48 seats in Maharashtra. People are saying this themselves. Our alliance will win maximum seats and defeat BJP..., Kharge claimed. The Congress chief also lamented that the party symbol was aken away from the eal parties in Maharashtra, referring to Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party and given to parties supporting the BJP. The illegal 'Mahayuti' government of Maharashtra was formed on the basis of betrayal and conspiracy and the Prime Minister himself is supporting it and his rallies are also being held in Maharashtra and wherever he goes, he tries to create a rift among the people..., he alleged, adding, The party symbol was taken away from the real parties and given to the parties supporting BJP. This is the decision of the court, ECI but everything happens on the instructions of Modi ji.... PM Modi is saying that he is providing 5 kg ration to 80 crore poor. We will give 10 kg after forming the government..., he added. Speaking on the alliance between the Aam Admi Party and Congress in the National Capital for the May 20 Lok Sabha elections and the two parties' decision to go solo in Punjab, the Congress chief said, We have alliance only on 3 seats in Delhi, there is an alliance in Chandigarh, we have given them seats in Gujarat and Haryana, we will work there only. But we are fighting against each other in Punjab. This is a democracy, it is not autocracy. We will do whatever has to be done to defeat BJP, he said. The Congress also said that West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, who recently announced to provide outside support to the INDIA bloc government if it is voted to power after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is naturally with the anti-BJP front. Mamata ji, first she said that they will support from outside. Recently she has said that if the INDIA government is formed then she will join the government, so, naturally, she is with the alliance, Kharge said. Elections in 6 Lok Sabha seats of Mumbai are scheduled for Phase 5. The seats going to polls are Mumbai North, Mumbai North West, Mumbai North East, Mumbai North Central, Mumbai South and Mumbai South Central. The other constituencies of Maharashtra that will be part of the ongoing election in the fifth phase include Dhule, Dindori, Nashik, Kalyan, Palghar, Bhiwandi and Thane. Maharashtra has 48 Lok Sabha seats, the second largest after Uttar Pradesh. Voting for the first four phases has concluded and for the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha polls, polling is set to be held on May 20. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are being held in seven phases running from April 19 to June 1. The counting and results will be declared on June 4. (ANI)

Manthan is a fictionalized version of the beginnings of the extraordinary dairy cooperative movement that transformed India from a milk-deficient nation to the worlds largest milk producer inspired by Dr. Verghese Kurien, the Father of the White Revolution. Remarkably, the national award-winning film which enlists late Girish Karnad, Naseeruddin Shah and late Smita Patil as its starcast is also Indias first crowdfunded film produced by 500,000 dairy farmers who contributed Rs. 2/- each towards the production of the film. Restoration Process Manthan was restored using the best surviving elements: the 35 mm original camera negative preserved at the NFDC-National Film Archive of India and the 35 mm release print preserved at Film Heritage Foundation. Portions of the original camera negative had colour fading and variations, green mould and flicker, while many parts of the 35 mm print had scratches and vertical green lines. The sound negative had completely deteriorated and could not be used. The sound was digitised from the 35 mm release print. The film elements were repaired by the Film Heritage Foundation conservators and the scanning was done in Prasad Lab in Chennai. While the scanning and digital clean-up was done at Prasad under the supervision of LImmagine Ritrovata in Bologna, the grading, sound restoration and mastering was done at the lab in Bologna. Both Shyam Benegal and Govind Nihalani, the cinematographer of the film, have been involved in the restoration of the film.

IMD predicts severe heatwave days in north India

NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast severe heatwave over plains of northwest, Bihar, east and central India in the next five days. The forecast indicates that northwestern India, including the National Capital Territory of Delhi, will experience a period of intense heat for five days. It will include unusually warm night time temperatures, which can intensify the risk of heat-related illness and death, IMD said in its forecast on Thursday. In its advisory, the weather department said intense heat will lead to high health concerns for vulnerable people, such as infants, elderly, and people with chronic diseases. It suggested avoiding heat exposure and dehydration. On Friday, 43 districts of northwest and central India reported temperature over 42 degrees Celsius, Agra Taj recording the highest at 46.9C. IMD observed heat wave conditions at most places over west and east Rajasthan, in some pockets over Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Punjab, and isolated pockets over east Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. The threshold for a heat wave is met when the maximum temperature of a weather station reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, 37 degrees in the coastal areas, and 30 degrees in the hilly regions, and the departure from normal is 4.5C to 6.4C and more. In the case of a warm night, the minimum temperature departure from normal is 4.5C to 6.4C. In the meantime, US-based Climate Central organisation has released the latest climate shift index (CSI) a tool that quantifies the contribution of climate change to daily temperatures showing that western India, including Delhi, will experience a period of intense heat in the next three days. CSI levels above one indicate climate change. According to the index, daily high temperatures are expected to run 3C to more than 6C above average. The organisation has forecast that high temperatures will exceed 45C in many locations. In parts of Haryana state, maximum temperatures could surpass 47C. In addition to maximum temperatures, night time will also be warmer. According to CSI, night time low temperatures are not expected to fall below 34C and in parts of Rajasthan state, nighttime temperatures are not expected to fall below 37C. Experts say human-caused climate change made heatwave conditions more intense. Human-caused climate change has made this intense heat much more likely and the overnight temperatures make this event alarming, said Andrew Pershing of Climate Central.

Fissures in Gujarat BJP as MLAs voice concerns

AHMEDABAD: After the Lok Sabha elections in Gujarat, three MLAs of the ruling BJP have voiced their concerns regarding the working of the state government and registered their protests against officials. Kishor Kanani, the MLA from Varachha, has criticised arrangements for obtaining income and caste certificates at the Surat collectors office. Sanjay Koradia, the MLA from Junagadh, has written to the Chief Minister, questioning the slow progress in beautification of Narsingh Lake. Sanjaysinh Vijaysinh Mahida, the MLA from Mahudha, has written about purchase of coolers of inferior quality for schools. In his letter to the the Surat collector on May 14, Kanani said, After the Class 10 and Class 12 results, students for long queues to get income and caste certificates, but only a limited number of tokens are distributed, leaving many frustrated. Agents in collusion with office operators take money and arrange for the certificates to be issued within two hours, Kanani alleged that agents are operating illegally within the government office. Junagadh MLA Koradia has complained against contractors engaged in government work and officials. In a letter dated May 13 to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, I mentioned that the work on Narsinh Lake in Junagadh has been going on for the last two years. Its completion deadline was April, yet only 60 per cent of the first phase has been completed. Last time, inlet water entered residential areas due to the contractors negligence during the monsoon. Today, a year has passed, but work on the inlet has not started. If the work is not expedited, we will face the same issues during the rains. Koradia told this newspaper. I have written to the Chief Minister to expedite the work. It seems either the contractors are not working or they are ignoring the officials. I have raised this issue three-four times with the officials, but my concerns have not been addressed. Despite my submissions, there has been no impact. Koradia had last year alleged corruption in the approval of construction along river banks in Junagadh. He had then written to the Chief Minister demanding an investigation into the matter. In his letter, Mahudha MLA Mahida said, The taluka development officer is making arbitrary purchases. The RO plants and water coolers allocated to primary schools are of inferior quality. Days ago, a candidate backed by Union minister Amit Shah lost in the election to the post of the farmer-owned fertiliser cooperatives director in Gujarat, indicating discontent within the BJP unit in the state.

Uddhav says BJP will surely be out of power on June 4

MUMBAI: Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal on Friday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a rally of the opposition INDIA bloc in Mumbai which was also addressed by NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. Thackeray said on June 4, when Lok Sabha election results will be declared, Modi will be out as PM. On June 4 there will be de-Modiisation of India. This is the first election where PM Narendra Modi is not finding direction for his campaign, he said. Thackeray said Modis only goal is his own re-election, and he does not want to step aside for a younger generation. Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal alleged that PM Modi wants to finish off Indian democracy and is taking the country towards dictatorship. The AAP leader claimed that Modis policy is if you cant defeat opponents, arrest them. Thackeray hit out at Modi for calling the party founded by his father as duplicate Shiv sena. I want to tell Modi, my forefathers worked for this land that belongs to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and we are proud of it, what about you? In Gujarat, Mughal emperor Aurangzeb was born and Modi comes from that land. This is major difference between Modi and Thackeray. We will never surrender before anyone. Thackeray alleged that Modi plans to loot Mumbai and Maharashtra like Aurangzeb but we will never allow this to happen. He said Modi has shifted all developmental projects from Maharashtra to Gujarat. Because of Modi, a handful of Gujaratis are trying to threaten the Marathi people. I want to tell that if they want to stay in Mumbai, they have to stay peacefully, otherwise we willclose the doors to them, Thackeray said. Modi has hatred towards Marathi manoos. Some of the Gujarati firms based in Mumbai are not allowing Marathi people to apply for jobs. We will not allow them succeed, he said. Kharge said that there was an undercurrent against the Modi-led government, and that is why the PM is afraid. Modi is not paying attention to employment generation and controlling inflation, he claimed. NCP(SP) chief Sharad Pawar said that Maharashtra knows that founder Bal Thackeray helped Modi in his difficult times, but he has forgotten that now. PMs goal is his own re-elections Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray said Modis only goal is his own re-election, and he does not want to step aside for a younger generation. Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal alleged that PM Modi wants to finish off Indian democracy and is taking the country towards dictatorship.

Kerala under-reports illnesses related to heat: central expert

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even as Kerala sweltered under a hostile summer, the state significantly under-reported heat-related illnesses, National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) health and climate resilience lead Abhiyant Tiwari has said. In an exclusive interaction with TNIE , Tiwari said only 25% of public healthcare institutions in the state reported such incidents to central authorities. Gujarat, at 95%, leads in reporting of such cases while Telangana comes second with 83%, he said. A leading climate resilience and health consultant, Tiwari was part of the development and implementation of the first Heat Action Plan (HAP) of South Asia in 2013. Kerala should strengthen its heat and health surveillance system, he said, on the sidelines of a workshop on Impact of Extreme Heat on Kerala organised by the Kerala Union for Working Journalists (KUWJ) in collaboration with ASAR in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday. The National Programme on Climate Change and Human Health (NPCCHH) under the Ministry of health and Family Welfare has been collecting heat-related health illness and mortality data from every state since 2018-19 to come up with policies and programmes to review the impact and to increase national level preparedness. Heatwave sparks surge in waterborne diseases in Kerala I was surprised that the cases in Kerala were under-reported. Only 25% of the public sector health facilities report data to NPCCHH. Kerala, being a pioneer in the health sector, could do better. The state did a wonderful job during the pandemic and the overall public awareness is much better compared to any other state in the country. But the state is still not at par with our expectation when it comes to heat-health surveillance, Tiwari said. Abhiyant Tiwari The state should set an example by coming up with technical solutions. I am sure heat health is something (for which) Kerala can set an example, he added. An effective early warning system could help reduce mortality rate due to disaster by eight times, he pointed out. What Kerala and any other state should be doing is to come up with strategies and policies to mitigate disasters and increase preparedness. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is preparing strategic policies and new frameworks for various sectors like agriculture, fishing and many more that can be adapted by the states for better preparedness and mitigation, he said. The 15th financial commission has allocated special funds for disaster risk mitigation and the NDMA wants the states to come up with projects and policies to tap these funds, he said. This is besides the national disaster response fund. Instead of claiming funds for the deceased, the state should be ideally tapping funds for prevention and mitigation of disasters, and come up with proactive measures to deal with the climate crisis, Tiwari added. KSDMA to revise Heat Action Plan Thiruvananthapuram: Given the extreme heat situation, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority is gearing up to revise and update the Heat Action Plan (HAP) to increase heat-related preparedness. Hazard analyst Fahad Marzooq of KSDMA said heat clinics will start functioning at public healthcare institutions in the state from next year. He was speaking at the media workshop on Impact of Extreme Heat on Kerala organised by the district committee of Kerala Union for Working Journalists (KUWJ) in collaboration with ASAR in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday. Cusat Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research director S Abhilash said that land use pattern and rapid urbanisation has led to heat island effect in Kerala, aggravating hot and humid weather. He pointed out that the temperature at night has also increased. A total of 1,441 heat-related health incidents were reported in the state in the past three months, said National Programme for Climate Change and Human Health nodal officer for the state M S Manu.
