Tea major B&A Ltd ventures into retail segment

Tea major B&A Ltd ventures into retail segment For the first time in its over-100-year history, B&A Ltd has forayed into the retail segment through its 'Gatoonga' brand of black tea, a top company official said. The brand was launched in Assam on Saturday, with the company looking to tap the market in the home state before entering other parts of the country, B&A Ltd Managing Director Somnath Chatterjee said. ''The company's retail foray has begun with 'Gatoonga' brand by tapping the Assam market and it will gradually expand across India based on a demand-driven growth strategy,'' he said. B&A Ltd Deputy Managing Director Dhruba Jyoti Dowerah said the company's parent group had four verticals previously, and the retail branding being the fifth one. The existing verticals are tea manufacturing and processing, packaging, tea tourism and broking. B&A Ltd is the listed flagship company of the Rs 300-crore Barooahs & Associates Group and has descended from Barasali Tea Company Ltd, which was founded in 1915. The company currently has 11 tea estates in upper Assam locations and produced 5.5 million kgs of black tea last year. Chatterjee said the Group has rolled out a Rs 50-crore capex plan for a pan-India growth strategy, under which it recently acquired Moheema tea estate in Golaghat district. This is the first acquisition by the company in over six decades, he said. ''For the first time in sixty years, the B&A Group has prepared a roadmap for a pan-India growth strategy with new acquisitions and diversification into the branded retail tea market. The company will invest around Rs 50 crore in the next seven years as part of its growth and expansion strategy,'' he added.

Fact Check: Claim that Rahul Gandhi was Holding a Red-Covered Book of the Chinese Constitution is False

Claim: A photo of Rahul Gandhi, Congress senior leader, holding a book with a red cover is going viral on social media. The accompanying claim suggests that Gandhi is holding a copy of the original Chinese constitution, which is said to have a red cover, in contrast to the original Indian constitution, which supposedly has a blue cover.' The claim was first posted by BJP leader and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 17. Taking to X, he stated, The original copy of the Constitution of India has a blue cover. The original Chinese constitution has a red cover. Is Rahul carrying a Chinese Constitution? We need to verify. Sarma seemed to further justify his statement when he posted again on X on May 18, saying, Rahul is displaying a red Chinese constitution to the people attending his meetings. Our constitution, which is blue, includes a chapter called the Directive Principles of State Policy. This chapter makes it a sacred duty to enact a Uniform Civil Code in our country. Rahul is now opposing this. Thats why I am sure that the constitution in his hand must be a Chinese one. Sarmas first post included two distinct images: one of the Chinese constitution with a red cover and another of the Indian constitution with a blue cover. Other social media users subsequently picked up and re-shared this post. The Archived versions of such posts can be viewed here . Fact: The exact image of Gandhi with the red-covered book was found on the Press Trust of India (PTI) website (archive link ) with the caption, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addresses during a public meeting for Lok Sabha polls, in Gadwal, Telangana, Sunday, May 5, 2024. (PTI Photo). Drawing from this, we were able to access a video from the same event in Gadwal, where Gandhi delivered his speech. He posted a livestream on YouTube (archived here ) titled Lok Sabha 2024 Campaign | Public Meeting | Gadwal, Telangana, on May 5, 2024. At the 29:17 mark, the cover of the book he was holding, clearly marked with the words The Constitution of India, is visible. While holding the book, Gandhi stated in Hindi, ...if the poor, OBCs, Dalits, and tribes in the country have gained anything, it is because of this book, our constitution. If you have employment, daily wages, public sectors, and reservations, it's all because of this book. Before its existence, India had no rights for you all. This book protects the rights of all sections of people: the OBC, minorities, tribes, and general castes. And the BJP wants to tear this book. This book is the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, B.R. Ambedkar, and Jawaharlal Nehru The reference here clearly refers to the Constitution of India. The Telangana Youth Congress also posted ( archived version) a similar photo of Gandhi holding the red-covered copy of the Indian constitution on April 29, 2024. Constitution of India with a red cover In our search for a red-covered Indian constitution book, we found a specific edition by Gopal Sankaranarayanan titled 'Constitution of India (Coat Pocket Edition),' published by Eastern Book Company (EBC). This book is available on the EBC Webstore , an online law bookstore, and the Amazon online shopping platform. We observed that this EBC edition matches the copy Gandhi was holding in the viral image. Verdict: The claim made by Hemant Biswa Sarma is false. Rahul Gandhi was seen holding a red-covered coat pocket edition of the Constitution of India, authored by Gopal Sankaranarayanan. Disclaimer: The story was originally published by Logically Facts . Look at your own states first: CM Naveen to visiting BJP counterparts

BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday hit out at his counterparts from BJP-ruled states, who during their campaign here are reiterating party promise to make Odisha no 1, saying they should look at their own states before commenting on the state. In a video message, Naveen said,They are making a lot of promises which include making Odisha number one state in the country. But people of the state are laughing at them. He advised the BJP chief ministers to concentrate on their own states first. Particularly taking a dig at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has been aggressive in his speeches, Naveen said,The per capita deficit of Assam is double than that of Odisha. The Assam chief minister should really look into the matters of his own state. This is for the second time that the chief minister has taken on the visiting BJP leaders in two days. On Friday, he had stated that some chief ministers and Union ministers come to Odisha as political tourists only at the time of elections. Their speeches have no effect on the people of Odisha.

BJD launches intensive campaign in Puri

PURI: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) intensified its campaign for the Puri Lok Sabha constituency on Saturday, with star campaigner VK Pandian addressing multiple public meetings to garner support for its Lok Sabha candidate, Arup Patnaik and Assembly nominee Umakant Samantaray. Pandian spoke at Krushna Prasad and Kerandia in the Brahmagiri Assembly segment, as well as Pipili, Chilika, and Ranpur. At Kerandia, Pandian criticised the Opposition parties for their alleged false promises and highlighted the BJPs intent to halt popular state schemes such as the Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY) health insurance and Biju pension schemes. He questioned BJP star campaigners promises to make every state number one, pointing out the inconsistency in Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarmas claims during campaign in Odisha. Pandian assured voters of continued and expanded welfare programmes, including free electricity for farmers and consumers up to 100 units, increased remuneration for anganwadi and Ashas, and various initiatives to support women and youth. He urged the electorate to support Arup Patnaik and Umakanta Samantaray, promising that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik would secure a historic sixth consecutive term on June 9. Patnaik and Samantaray also addressed the crowds, appealing for votes. Earlier, they held a meeting at Krushna Prasad. 'New India' doesn't need madarssas, it needs modern colleges producing doctors, engineers: Himanta

'New India' doesn't need madarssas, it needs modern colleges producing doctors, engineers: Himanta Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday asserted that the ''new India'' led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not need madarssas but modern institutions that produce doctors and engineers. Addressing back-to-back election rallies in Muzaffarpur, Siwan and Buxar Lok Sabha seats, Sarma said grand temples would be built in Varanasi and Mathura and the Uniform Civil Code would be implemented if the NDA returns to power by winning over 400 Lok Sabha seats. ''The new India of Modi ji does not need madarssas... we need modern schools and colleges that will produce doctors and engineers... not maulvis from madarssas,'' he said. Sarma said the NDA will ensure that Pakistan occupied Kashmir, which is an integral part of India, returns to the country. ''We will implement UCC, build a temple on Krishna Janmabhoomi premises in Mathura and establish Kashi Vishwanath temple in place of Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi, besides ensuring that PoK returns to India, after winning over 400 seats,'' he said. Hitting out at the Congress and its allies, Sarma said, ''Rahul Gandhi and Lalu Prasad did not attend the consecration of Ram Mandir. They want to send Ram Lalla back to the tent. We must not let this happen.'' He labeled Congress and RJD as ''biggest enemies of OBCs'' for allegedly trying to introduce religion-based reservations in the country. ''Religion-based reservations should be given to Muslims in Pakistan, not India. Lalu Prasad should go to Pakistan to give reservations to Muslims. The NDA will not allow this at any cost,'' the Assam CM said. Asserting that Rahul Gandhi can ''never become PM'', Sarma said, ''He can contest elections in Pakistan and become its PM. He and his party are indulging in politics of appeasement.'' ''The corrupt Congress-RJD alliance is trying its best to stall development of Bihar... they indulge in fulfilling their own interests whenever they get an opportunity. The NDA is breaking their nexus,'' he said. Sarma alleged that besides putting up its own candidates, Congress and RJD are also backing Independent candidates in certain seats against BJP nominees. ''These Independents always in constant touch with leaders of the Congress and RJD,'' he alleged. While BJP's Raj Bhushan Nishad is contesting from Muzaffarpur, Vijay Lakshmi Devi Kushwaha is contesting as an NDA nominee from Siwan. BJP has fielded Mithilesh Tiwary from Buxar Lok Sabha seat. PM contradicts his own slogan of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas': Farooq Abdullah

PM contradicts his own slogan of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas': Farooq Abdullah National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday of dividing the people of the country on the basis of religion, saying his recent statements have even contradicted his own slogan of ''Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas''. The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister claimed that the hatred for Muslims has gone up ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) assumed power at the Centre in 2014, while people are suffering due to inflation and growing unemployment. ''I have heard the (election) speeches of almost all prime ministers from Jawaharlal Nehru and except Modi, everyone always talked about uniting people as that is the guarantee for our success as a country. ''His (Modi's) recent statements where he is talking about Muslims as outsiders, giving birth to more children, frightening Hindus by claiming that their properties, including the mangalsutras of their women, will be taken and distributed among the minority community have no parallel. We Muslims only want our rights and have no intention to usurp the rights of others,'' Abdullah said, addressing a Lok Sabha poll rally in the Surankote area of Poonch district. The rally was jointly organised by the NC and the Congress in support of Mian Altaf, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) candidate from the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha constituency that is scheduled to go to polls on May 25. ''The NC and the Congress have come together to protect the country so that we can live with honour and die respectfully. Our country is still poverty-ridden and we can only overcome our problems when we are united,'' Abdullah said. He claimed that the winds of change are sweeping the country and the BJP is finding its government dangling, which is evident from the statements of the party's top leaders. ''They are talking about 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas', but the prime minister's speeches contradict his oft-repeated slogan. The home minister (Amit Shah) meets specially-invited people in the presence of those close to the BJP with an aim to divide us. ''They are doing it in the darkness of night so that nobody can see them in the daytime,'' the former Union minister said, asking people to pray that the ''divisive'' government falls and the hatred that was spread after 2014 is replaced with love, brotherhood and respect for each other. He said Islam teaches Muslims to respect other religions and ''we do not believe in hatred''. ''(Congress leader) Rahul Gandhi took out the Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kanyakumari to snow-bound Kashmir and later, the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra from Assam to Maharashtra. His only purpose was to unite the country in the face of growing hatred and understand the pain of the public,'' Abdullah said. He said Jammu and Kashmir acceded to Mahatma Gandhi's India but the BJP has created a trust deficit between the people of the region and New Delhi. ''I am being dubbed by them as Pakistani, Khalistani, an American agent because I am talking straight. I am asking them that if they can talk to China, which has taken our land, why are they not talking to the neighbouring country (Pakistan) to pull us out of the turmoil? We are also citizens of the country,'' the NC leader said. Referring to his meeting with Modi as part of a delegation in June 2021, Abdullah said the prime minister had talked about ending ''Dilli ki doori aur dil ki doori'' and ''we had suggested releasing the innocent people from Jammu and Kashmir languishing in jails in other states as a move to bridge the trust deficit''. ''They promised that all of them will be released after their cases are reviewed by a committee. Neither the committee was formed nor anyone released,'' he said. Abdullah said hundreds of NC leaders and workers were killed by terrorists because ''we were standing with India''. Praying for the success of the INDIA opposition bloc in the ongoing polls, he said he will request the Centre for the release of all innocent Kashmiris and a separate Lok Sabha constituency for the Rajouri-Poonch region that remains cut-off from south Kashmir's Anantnag owing to the six-month closure of the Mughal road due to heavy snowfall. Abdullah urged people to remain cautious and united, and said they should be prepared for the Assembly polls that are likely to be held after the culmination of the annual Amarnath Yatra in August.

BJP wants 400 seats in LS to get rid of Constitution, have Manusmriti in its place: CPI-M's Yechury

BJP wants 400 seats in LS to get rid of Constitution, have Manusmriti in its place: CPI-M's Yechury CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Saturday attacked the BJP saying that the party wants more than 400 seats in the Lok Sabha to get rid of the Constitution and have Manusmriti in its place. They ask for 400 seats so that they can get rid of the Constitution and have their Manusmithi as the order for India's society in the future under a fascistic dictatorship. That is what they want to do. But the people are rejecting it, Yechury told ANI. He also accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of being ignorant of the Constitution, saying that the Constitution does not talk about any reservations for OBCs as the Chief Minister said in a public rally in Bihar and that under the Constitution reservations are for backwardness. Earlier in the day, while opposing the idea of providing reservations to Muslims Sarma said, In the Constitution, it is mentioned that SC, ST, and OBC should get reservations. Reacting to this, Yechury said, First of all he should be a little knowledgeable about Indian History. The Constitution does not talk about any reservation for OBCs. OBC thing came only after the Mandal Commission, it is not something Babasaheb Ambedkar gave. They keep dropping his name and creating their history. They don't even know the constitution on which they took an oath to become chief Ministers. This is the pathetic state of affairs of this party called the BJP. As far as the reservation issue is concerned, the Constitution is very clear it is the reservation for backwardness. It is not a reservation based on religion. So Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes reservations are reservations for their backwardness. They are not given reservations for their being part of the Hindu religion, he added. He said that backwardness can be there with anybody of any religion. You could be a Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Sikh or an atheist and still be backward. So backwardness is the criteria, not the religion, he said. Addressing a public rally in Raghunathpur, Siwan, on Saturday, the Assam CM said that no reservations will be made on the basis of religion. Few days back I saw the statement of Lalu Yadav, where he said that 'Muslims should get reservations'. Do Hindus don't deserve to get reservations? Babasaheb Ambedkar gave us the Constitution. In the Constitution, it is mentioned that SC, ST, and OBC should get reservations. There will be no reservations on the basis of religion. I want to say this, Lalu Yadav, if you want to give reservations to Muslims, then I will buy you the tickets to Pakistan, go to Pakistan and then give reservations there. It will never happen in India. There is no law on this. Yeh Sapna bhi aap mat dekho (don't dream of this), Assam CM said. Citing examples from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, the Assam CM alleged that such measures came at the expense of other backward classes. Karnataka's decision to grant reservations to Muslims was done after robbing the reservations of Backward classes, he said. The Assam CM asserted that to bring the entire Jammu and Kashmir to India, the Bharatiya Janata Party needs 400 seats in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. One part of Kashmir is in Pakistan. Give 400 seats to Modi ji and we will get Kashmir from Pakistan. We closed 700 madrassas in Assam and no one raised their voice against it. Why? Because this is a new India...Aaj mullah banane ka dukaan khulne nahi dunga. Doctor , engineer, banane ka kaam karunga...We need 400 seats so that we can bring the Uniform Civil Code, construct the Krishna Janambhoomi temple, construct the Gyanvapi temple and stop reservation to Muslims. That's why we need 400 seats, he said. (ANI)

NIA Charges Two Bangladeshi Nationals for Human Trafficking in India

NIA Charges Two Bangladeshi Nationals for Human Trafficking in India The NIA on Saturday charge-sheeted two Bangladeshi nationals for allegedly crossing into India illegally 10 years ago and pushing people from their country into forced labour through an organised racket. The probe of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the case has revealed that the accused -- Muhammed Sahajalal Haldar and Muhammed Idris alias Erdish Khan -- had crossed into India through Benapole on the India-Bangladesh border and had initially worked as waste segregators, according to a statement. Benapole is a town in Bangladesh's Jessore district. Later, they first rented land at Seegehalli and then at Margondanahalli in Karnataka, and started their own waste segregation units by constructing godowns and temporary sheds, the NIA said in its statement. They used to employ trafficked Bangladeshi nationals and force them into hard labour on meagre wages under the threat of arrest by the Indian police, it said. As part of an elaborate human trafficking network, Bangladeshi nationals were brought to India through the India-Bangladesh border on the pretext of secure jobs with valid Indian identity documents, according to the findings of the probe. ''Further strengthening its case against the human trafficking network, the NIA on Saturday charge-sheeted two men for illegally crossing into India 10 years ago and pushing Bangladeshi nationals into forced labour,'' the statement said. The charge-sheet was filed in a special NIA court in Bengaluru against Haldar and Khan, who were arrested in February with the help of the Internal Security Division of Karnataka, after being on the run for months, it said. The NIA had registered a case in this regard on November 7 last year after receiving credible inputs about certain Karnataka-based entities working with facilitators and traffickers in Assam and Tripura in India and Bangladesh to establish a transnational human trafficking network. Nationwide searches by the NIA had led to the arrest of several accused in the case and the agency had earlier charge-sheeted 12 Bangladeshi nationals. ''Further investigations are continuing to track other suspected traffickers, including 'dalals' and touts involved in the racket,'' the agency said.

Go to Pakistan and then give reservations...: Assam CM slams RJD chief Lalu Yadav

Go to Pakistan and then give reservations...: Assam CM slams RJD chief Lalu Yadav Opposing the idea of providing reservations to Muslims, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday hit out at RJD chief Lalu Yadav over his advocacy forcomplete reservation for Muslims and suggested Lalu Yadav to move to Pakistan and then give reservations there. Earlier on May 7, former Bihar Chief Minister and RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav came out in support of the Muslim quota, saying that they should get the reservation. Speaking to reporters, the former CM said, Muslims should get reservations (reservation toh milna chahiye Musalmano ko, pura'...). The 40 seats in Bihar are undergoing polls in all seven phases. In 2019, the BJP-led NDA swept the state by winning 39 out of 40 seats, while Congress won just one seat. RJD, a formidable force in the state, failed to open its account. The Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance), the opposition coalition in Bihar, including Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, and Left parties, recently announced that the RJD, its largest constituent, will contest 26 out of the state's 40 Lok Sabha seats. As part of the NDA, BJP and JD(U) will contest on 17 and 16 seats, respectively. Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) will contest five seats, and Jitan Manjhi's Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha will contest one seat each. The voting in Siwan will be held in the sixth phase of the elections on May 25. The counting of votes will be held on June 4. (ANI)

Controversy Over Constitution Colors: Assam CM vs. Rahul Gandhi

Controversy Over Constitution Colors: Assam CM vs. Rahul Gandhi Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been displaying the Chinese constitution at his rallies, instead of the Indian one. The BJP leader claimed that the book shown by Gandhi is with a red cover like the original Chinese constitution, whereas the original Indian constitution has a blue cover. ''Rahul is displaying a red Chinese constitution to the people attending his meetings,'' Sarma wrote on X. In response, several social media users said that the red-bound Constitution is a coat pocket edition, which has been presented to top Indian leaders, including the President and the Union Home minister. Sarma said the Indian constitution, in blue, includes a chapter called the Directive Principles of State Policy, which makes it a sacred duty to enact a Uniform Civil Code in our country; Rahul is now opposing this. ''That's why I am sure that the constitution in his hand must be a Chinese one,'' the CM added. Sarma shared a photo of Rahul Gandhi standing behind a podium with a book in red cover in his hand. The Assam chief minister also shared a photo in which Gandhi is seen signing an agreement with some Chinese delegates. Sonia Gandhi is also seen standing behind her son in the picture, with the pact signed during the Gandhis' visit during the Beijing Olympics. Sarma had taken to X on Friday also to question the book displayed by Gandhi. Sharing the photo of the Congress leader with the red-bound book, Sarma wrote, ''The original copy of the Constitution of India has a blue cover. The original Chinese constitution has a red cover. Does Rahul carry a Chinese Constitution? We will need to verify,'' the Assam CM added. The BJP leader had also shared a photo of the original Indian constitution, displayed in a glass box, with its blue cover. Several social media users posted multiple photos of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and former President Ram Nath Kovind with a similar coat pocket edition of the Indian Constitution as displayed by Gandhi.

Political tourists of BJP resorting to derogatory, abusive language: Naveen Patnaik

BHUBANESWAR: As campaign has reached a peak ahead of the second phase elections in Odisha on May 20, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday came down heavily on the Union ministers, CMs from other states and others leaders for resorting to what he termed derogatory and abusive language in their campaign meetings and rallies. With the Opposition, particularly the BJP pressing all its might in the state to win the polls by bringing in top ministers, its CMs and top leaders, the chief minister said they were political tourists and their visits would not have any impact on the people of Odisha. Some chief ministers and Union ministers come as political tourists only at the time of elections and then they disappear. Their speeches have no effect on the people of Odisha, Naveen told the media. It is most unfortunate that many of them use derogatory and abusive language. I never believe in doing that and the people here in our state dont appreciate such language, he added. The BJP has launched a campaign blitzkrieg by top leadership of the party who are holding roadshows, addressing public meeting and rallies in constituencies where elections are scheduled to be held in the second phase on May 20. The saffron party campaign has made Odia Asmita or Odia pride its main poll plank, targeting Tamil Nadu-born bureaucrat-turned-politician and Naveens close aide VK Pandian for his hold over the regional party and the BJD government. The party has also vociferously raised questions on Naveens health condition and alleged that he has been held captive. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already campaigned for party candidates twice in May after visiting the state twice earlier in March. The prime minister conducted a roadshow at Bhubaneswar on May 10 and is scheduled hold another one at Puri on Monday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president JP Nadda, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai, Rajasthan CM Bhajan Lal Sharma have been frequenting the state and covered almost all the constituencies that are going to polls in phases. On Friday, apart from the chief ministers and Shah, Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and his cabinet colleague Bhupender Yadav, and BJP MP Hema Malini held meetings at different places of the state.
