He said that every day an unexpected number of devotees were visiting the pilgrimage site. Abhinav Kumar said, Today is the tenth day of the commencement of Char Dham Yatra. I have come to inspect the arrangements made for the pilgrims. This time, an unexpected number of devotees are visiting the holy place. Daily, more than 30,000 devotees are visiting. The teams of all departments are working in coordination to make arrangements. In the coming days, our effort would be to provide more police forces and facilities for the devotees. The DGP instructed to take strict action against those doing videography and making social media reels at a distance of 50 meters in the Kedarnath Dham temple complex. He instructed to maintain crowd management and an effective line system. During this, the police force deployed on duty was instructed by him to behave gently with the devotees. Since the sacred doors of Kedarnath Dham, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, opened to devotees on May 10, more than 1.83667 lakh pilgrims from across India and abroad have visited the revered site. The influx of visitors has led to significant traffic congestion on the Yatra route. The district administration and police are actively working to manage the situation. The sheer volume of pilgrims has caused jams at various points along the route, particularly in areas such as Byunggad, Fata, and Jamu. In response to the gridlock, the District Magistrate has directed officials to ensure essential supplies reach stranded pilgrims. On Saturday District Supply Officer Manoj Kumar Dobhal and Sector Officer Narendra Kumar, along with their team, distributed food packets and water bottles to 2,500 devotees stuck in the jams. Efforts are ongoing to improve traffic flow and ensure the safety and comfort of all pilgrims visiting Kedarnath Dham. The Char Dham Yatra, steeped in profound spiritual significance in Hinduism, unfolds a journey of devotion and introspection, traversing the sacred realms of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, culminating in spiritual rejuvenation and divine communion. Severe traffic jam in Haridwar causes distress to travellers due to scorching heat

Severe traffic jam in Haridwar causes distress to travellers due to scorching heat Haridwar is grappling with severe traffic congestion this weekend, exacerbated by the influx of visitors for the Char Dham Yatra. Since early morning on Sunday, vehicles have been inching forward on the national highway, causing significant distress to travelers, particularly small children suffering in the scorching heat. The city's major intersections are also clogged, with traffic jams bringing movement to a standstill. Despite efforts from traffic police personnel, the situation remains chaotic. All parking spaces in Haridwar are currently full, compounding the problem as vehicles struggle to find space. The congestion is so severe that even ambulances are unable to navigate through the gridlock, raising concerns about emergency response times. Travellers report taking several hours just to pass through Haridwar, enduring extreme discomfort in the heat. Ram Kumar, travelling from Bahadarabad to Haridwar for a holy bath, expressed his frustration. We have been stuck in this traffic jam for almost an hour. We have small children with us, and on top of that, it's very hot. We don't know what to do. There are no other options here right now. We are facing a lot of difficulties. The police are busy trying to clear the traffic, but there are so many people that there's not much they can do about it, Kumar said. Another traveller, Sujata, described the ordeal stating, We have been stuck in this traffic jam for a very long time, and we have elderly women with us, so we are facing a lot of difficulties. It's very troublesome for us, and the heat is making it even worse. A traveler returning to Noida after visiting Haridwar shared a similar experience. We were just returning after our visit, but there is such a huge traffic jam here, and there are no arrangements. Some roads are clearing up a bit, but the jam is extensive. We've been stuck for an hour and a half. On top of that, the heat is making it even more difficult. There's no traffic police here, the traveller said. Earlier on May 18, Abhinav Kumar, Director General of Police (DGP), Uttarakhand, conducted a surprise inspection of the Bhadrakali check post during his visit to Garhwal. During this, he inspected the Gangotri Yamunotri Yatri Registration Check Center and Tourist Police Assistance Center and took feedback on travel arrangements from the officers present. He instructed the officers to maintain the traffic system. He also stressed that the convenience of the devotees should be taken care of and that all necessary steps should be taken so that they do not face any problems. The Char Dham Yatra commenced in Uttarakhand on May 10. The Char Dham Yatra holds profound spiritual significance in Hinduism. This journey typically occurs from April-May to October-November. It is believed that one should complete the Char Dham Yatra in a clockwise direction. Hence, the pilgrimage starts from Yamunotri, proceeds towards Gangotri, onto Kedarnath, and finally ends at Badrinath. The journey can be completed by road or by air (helicopter services are available). (ANI)

SC Notice to Centre on Plea Alleging Overuse of Pesticides on Crops and Food Items

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday sought response from the Centre and others on a plea claiming overuse of pesticides and other chemicals on crops and food items is resulting in deaths across the country.A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra issued notices to the Union government, Ministry of Agriculture, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and others while seeking their replies to the plea. Senior advocate Anitha Shenoy told the court that the petitioner has collected data from across the country showing a very high number of deaths due to pesticides. The top court was hearing a plea filed by advocate Akash Vashisht. The use and overuse of pesticides and inorganic chemical substances, including insecticides, weedicides, fungicides, rodenticides, herbicides or any other inorganic chemical substances, on food crops and food items has emerged as the primary and predominant cause of causing cancers and other fatal ailments in the country. The use and overuse of pesticides, in other words, inorganic substances, is food pollution. Just as air pollution, contamination of food and foods crops is a silent killer. Once food or a food crop is contaminated with pesticides, its toxicity spreads quickly across the entire food chain, through processes such as bio-accumulation and bio-magnification. The toxic elements and compounds in the food, once after entering the human body can neither be ejected nor rejected, the plea said. Referring to FSSAI data, the plea said out of 72,499 food samples analysed during 2015-16, 16,133 were found adulterated or misbranded. The plea said the authorities filed 1,450 criminal and 8,529 civil cases, leading to conviction in 540 cases. During 2016-17, 18,325 of 78,340 samples were found adulterated or misbranded. Altogether 13,080 cases were filed, leading to 1,605 convictions, it said. Despite such enormity, scale and seriousness of the issue, the Central government and its authorities have completely failed to prevent, control and abate the rising incidence of use and overuse of pesticides, the petition stated. Referring to data provided by the Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine & Storage, the plea said as many as 161 people died in 2020-21 due to poisoning by pesticides across three states alone, out of the eight reported states in the country- Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Kerala, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and West Bengal. Issue direction to revamp the existing regulatory framework related to the use and overuse of pesticides and other inorganic chemical substances, including insecticides, weedicides, fungicides, rodenticides, herbicides or any other inorganic chemical substances, on food crops and food items, the plea said.

Challenges Posed by Open Border with Myanmar: A Closer Look at Manipur

Imphal: T he porous border with Myanmar continues to pose significant challenges for India's Northeastern states, particularly Manipur. Recent outbreaks of violence in Manipur have been directly linked to the open border, facilitating illegal drug trafficking and arms smuggling, thereby heightening security concerns for Indian authorities. The unrestricted border access also allows numerous militant groups from the region to infiltrate Indian territory at will, exacerbating the security situation. During the Manipur violence, hundreds of militants reportedly crossed into Indian territory through the open border, causing extensive damage. Moreover, ongoing political and military turmoil in Myanmar has led to thousands of people entering Indian territory through the open border in the past three years. Around 50,000 Myanmar nationals have sought refuge in Mizoram and Manipur, raising serious demographic and security concerns. Manipur authorities have identified over 5,000 illegal intruders from Myanmar, with reports indicating the establishment of more than 996 illegal villages by these intruders. In response to these grave issues and in consideration of national security, the central government took the decision in February 2024 to fence the Myanmar border and revoke the Free Movement Regime (FMR) with Myanmar. However, this decision has faced resistance from certain organizations in Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland. On May 16, the Kuki Inpi Tengnoupal District (KIT) and the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO) Tengnoupal District in Manipur organized a massive rally denouncing the government's decision. Similarly, the Zo Reunification Organisation (Zoro) staged rallies in Mizoram, protesting against the dismantling of the FMR and the implementation of border fencing. The protests are rooted in concerns about the cultural and social ties among ethnic communities that would be disrupted by the policy changes. Zoro, in particular, advocates for the reunification of Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Zomi tribes and opposes the border fencing and FMR abrogation. Church bodies in Nagaland, Mizoram, and hill areas of Manipur are reportedly behind these protests, with Zoro being influenced by Christian leaders and advocating against the border policy changes. Sources suggest that Zoro is working towards establishing a greater Christian administrative region encompassing Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Zomi tribes of Manipur, Mizoram, and Myanmar. Opposition to the fencing and FMR abrogation has also been voiced by Mizoram and Nagaland assemblies, civil society organizations, and student bodies. Mizoram, in particular, is housing over 34,000 Chin refugees following the military coup in Myanmar, and there is reluctance to deport them due to shared ethnic ties. These protests underscore deep-seated concerns and opposition to the government's border policy. As tensions rise, authorities must address the grievances of affected communities and navigate the complex socio-political landscape of the region. IIT Roorkee scientists develop machine to convert pine needles into sustainable livelihood

DEHRADUN: Pine needles, commonly referred to as pirul, have been a primary catalyst for forest fires in Uttarakhand and other mountainous regions of the country. However, an innovative low-budget machine developed by scientists at IIT Roorkee, will not only help curtail the spread of these fires but will also help transform the pine needles into a sustainable source of income for local communities. Speaking to The New Indian Express, Dr Vinay Sharma, a scientist and project leader at the Department of Management Studies, IIT, said, The development of the machine commenced approximately 12 years ago. Subsequently, in 2019, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change awarded us a project. As a result, the machine was engineered to compress pine needles, known as pirul, into bricks. The research endeavor led by Dr Sharma was conducted in collaboration with Dr Rajat Agarwal. IIT has also patented this research. In Uttarakhand, a trial was conducted by installing 6 machines each in Chopda village above Kathgodam and Shyamkhet village near Bhawali Nainital..The trial turned out to be fully successful, Dr Sharma said. In 2022, 12 machines were prepared on the demand of the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department, which has went on to become a means of livelihood for the people there, he added. In Himachal Pradesh as well, amidst a comparable challenge of forest fires, officials from the forest department reached out to us. We have authorized them to construct the machine, Dr Sharma said. According to researchers, the machine weighs approximately 90 kg, allowing for easy portability between locations. When Pirul is loaded into the machine, it undergoes compression at a pressure of 1000 to 1200 PSI. No electricity or battery costs are incurred in its operation. Plans are underway to automate the process through solar technology.

How many hours does it take to climb Kedarnath?

Nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India, Kedarnath is not just a mountain but a revered pilgrimage site for Hindus. Perched at an elevation of 11,755 feet (3,584 meters), this sacred destination holds immense religious significance, attracting devotees and adventurers alike. The Challenging Trek to Kedarnath Embarking on the journey to Kedarnath involves more than just physical endurance; it's a test of one's devotion and determination. The trek, often undertaken by pilgrims seeking spiritual solace, presents a mix of challenges and rewards. The Traditional Route Traditionally, pilgrims begin their journey from Gaurikund, a small town located approximately 16 kilometers away from Kedarnath. This route follows a well-defined path that winds through rugged terrain, lush forests, and cascading streams. The Helicopter Option For those seeking a quicker and more convenient way to reach Kedarnath, helicopter services are available from Phata, Sersi, and other nearby towns. While this option significantly reduces travel time, it may lack the sense of adventure and connection with nature that the traditional trek offers. Factors Influencing the Time Taken Several factors come into play when estimating the time it takes to climb Kedarnath. These include: Fitness Level The physical condition of the pilgrim or trekker plays a crucial role in determining the duration of the journey. Those with a higher level of fitness may cover the distance more swiftly, while others may need to pace themselves accordingly. Weather Conditions The weather in the Himalayas can be unpredictable, with conditions ranging from clear skies to heavy rain or snowfall. Adverse weather can slow down progress and even pose risks to safety, necessitating caution and preparedness. Rest Stops and Accommodations Along the route to Kedarnath, there are several rest stops and accommodations available for pilgrims. The frequency and duration of these breaks can vary depending on individual preferences and the availability of facilities. Average Time Taken While the time taken to climb Kedarnath can vary widely depending on the factors mentioned above, on average, it typically takes around 6 to 8 hours to cover the distance from Gaurikund to Kedarnath on foot. Traditional Trek For pilgrims following the traditional trekking route from Gaurikund, the journey usually spans a full day, with an early morning start and arrival at Kedarnath by late afternoon or early evening. Helicopter Service In contrast, those opting for helicopter services can reach Kedarnath in a matter of minutes, making it a preferred choice for those with time constraints or physical limitations. Conclusion Climbing Kedarnath is not just a physical endeavor but a spiritual odyssey that requires reverence, resilience, and patience. Whether trekking through the scenic trails or soaring above the clouds in a helicopter, every pilgrim's journey is a testament to their devotion and dedication to Lord Shiva. SC slams Uttarakhand government over handling of forest fires, summons Chief Secretary

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday expressed its displeasure over the steps taken by the Uttarakhand government in controlling forest fires, calling the states approach lackadaisical.. A three-judge bench, led by Justice BR Gavai, directed the Uttarakhand Chief Secretary to be present personally before it on May 17, the next date of hearing in the case, to give an explanation, including on the utilisation of funds and vacancies in the forest department. We are at pains to say that the approach of the state of Uttarakhand in controlling the fires is, to say the least, lackadaisical. Though action plans have been prepared and finalised, no steps are being taken for implementation of the same, said the bench, also comprising Justices SVN Bhatti and Sandeep Mehta. In its last hearing, the Uttarakhand government informed the Supreme Court about the steps taken by it to control forest fires in the hill state. 0.1% of wildlife cover was battling forest fires and some sections of the media reporting that 40% of Uttarakhand was burning was totally misleading. There were 398 forest fires from November 2023 until today. All of them are man-made, the Uttarakhand governments deputy advocate general, Jatinder Kumar Sethi, told the apex court. Sethi pointed out that the phenomenon of forest fires was not new to Uttarakhand and every summer the forest department deals with such fires. The top court was hearing the matter related to forest fires in Uttarakhand on an application filed by senior advocate Rajiv Dutta. Sethi handed over a 380-page interim status report on behalf of the state government to the court, which apprised it of the immediate current status of the handling of the forest fires by the state machinery. He also submitted that a Uttarakhand Forest Fire Mitigation Project 202328 was pending with the Central government and an Uttarakhand Forest Fire Management Plan 2024 was being acted upon. The bench noted that one of the grievances raised by the state was regarding the failure of timely disbursement of the national or state disaster management fund. We fail to understand how the state could have a grievance with the disbursal of the state disaster management fund, as it is within the domain of the state to disburse the said funds, it said.

Former Uttarakhand CM Koshyari suggests judiciary stay out of Nainital HC transfer matter

DEHRADUN: Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari has also entered the fray amidst the growing discontent among lawyers in the state. This comes in light of the ongoing dispute within bar associations across various districts following the High Court's directive to conduct a referendum on the relocation of the Nainital High Court to IDPL, Rishikesh. The former CM has penned a meticulously crafted letter comprising 10 pointed objections to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami regarding the recent High Court ruling. In his eloquent communication, he 'scrutinizes' the decision-making process of the judiciary in this particular case. Koshiyari's remarks were prompted by a ruling from the two-judge panel of the Nainital High Court led by Chief Justice Ritu Bahri, which mandated a referendum to decide on relocating the High Court to IDPL Rishikesh. In his letter, he argues, Though I may not be a legal expert, due to my long experience as a member of both Parliament and Legislature, I believe that decisions on the appointment of state institutions must be taken by Parliament or legislature, with respect for the judiciary as well. The significance of the 10-point letter, written by Bhagat Singh Koshyari, a veteran BJP leader from the Kumaon region and a staunch follower of the RSS, is being analysed from a political perspective. Koshyari is known as the political mentor of current Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who hails from Kumaon. In Kumaon, the High Court stands as the sole remaining major institution, facing threats of relocation despite the established agreement during the state's formation that the High Court would be situated in Kumaon if the capital remained in Garhwal, expressed Koshiyari with concern in his letter. Justifying the High Court's earlier decision to shift the High Court to the Golapar area of Nainital, the former CM said, The administration has taken this process forward and selected about 26 bighas of land in Goulapar and completed the process for no objection from the Forest Department. Land has also been selected for re-plantation elsewhere to compensate the forest department. In such a situation, the direction given to find an alternative place elsewhere for the High Court cannot rule out the possibility of spreading discontent in the area, said Koshiyari.

Curd rice: A soothing summer saviour

CHENNAI : Mustard seeds, mor molaga (buttermilk chillies), pacha molaga (green chillies) and curry leaves. For over 70 years, these are the ingredients that have gone into my thayir saadam (curd rice). And four generations of my family relish every bit of it, says Meenakshi with a proud smirk. Sitting confidently in an old wooden chair, the 96-year-old great-grand-paati of four smiles wide with excitement, her eyes twinkling with childlike mischief the moment she hears the word curd rice. In the 1950s, modern medicines had slowly started making their way into my veedu (home). But if one of my children had a bad tummy, avlodhaan, nothing doingcurd rice was the best medicine! chuckles Meenakshi, whose husband was a doctor at the time. Lime pickle is compulsory with curd rice, she advises. Everyone, please note! Ooofhow I devour thayir saadam! Like my Telugu friend who gobbles up perugannam and chadannam while my Kannadiga friend wolfs down some mosaranna. My Malayali aunts palate dances at the very sight of thayir choru while my Odia friend who lives upstairs cannot do without her pakhala bhaat. In walks my cousin from Delhi: for her, dahi chawal on a scorching May day. With the heat relentlessly gnawing at Indias every nook and cranny this summer, our fans, coolers and innumerable bottles of ice-cold water are at the verge of being checkmated by the sun. Gosh, what to do? Who will save us? Some soft, steamed rice on a banana leaf. Completely cloaked by oodles of thick, creamy curd. A drizzle of salt and then you gently mix, mix and mix. Not too grainy, not too mushy. Yes, thats just right. And of course you cant wait, immediately digging into the snowy decadence with some lime pickle, mango pickle or tomato thokku. Curd rice is your knight in shining banana leaf this scorching summer! Chawal ek dum soft honi chahiye (The rice should be totally soft). Mix perfectly with dahi and then add your tadka of mustard seeds, curry leaves and red chillies, says chef Bhagwan Singh from Uttarakhand. Although khichdi is the revered sick food of the north, Singh says that when his tummy aches, it is dahi chawal he runs to. Indeed, stomach aches were a royal pain in the tummy when I was little. Amma would rush me to the doctors and pop a dozen pills in my mouthwait, just kidding! A big bowl of mosaranna as I called it growing up in Bengaluru is what would finally do the trick. Within minutes, what tummy ache? My stomach? Hurt ah? And I would often whisper to myself, god bless the soul who invented curd rice! Ancient curdy goodness Food historian and MasterChef India Tamil judge Rakesh Raghunathan says that the humble elixir may have an ancestor. The Atharva Veda (1500-1000 BC) mentions dadhi, a sort of yoghurt-based preparation. Although this wasnt exactly curd rice, it was a precursor. Rakesh adds that dairy was considered a symbol of luxury and sophistication. The Mahabharata and Puranas also mention that kings consumed curd. The Charak Samhita, which gives us an account of Ayurveda, also mentions that curd was used by royalty. They consumed it because of its taste and nutritional benefits. Rice was obviously there, so it wouldnt have been very difficult to mix the two and eat. Over time, curd rice has evolved into a stereotypical seal stamp on South Indians. But Rakesh says that the prevalence of the dish in the eras gone by has more to do with climate. In regions where temperatures were harsh, people would use naturally cooling ingredients like yoghurt. These places also had a lot of rice. So one cannot say that curd rice was first patronised by South Indians, he adds. In her anthology of poems called Thani padal thirattu, Sangam-era poetess Avvaiyar lauds a comforting meal of tangy, frothy buttermilk and varagu rice with smoked and mashed brinjal. When a figurehead of ancient wisdom swears by the curdy goodness, you know you need it on your plate and palate! Myriad avatars of curd rice Speaking of some good ol wisdom, Bengaluru-based HR professional Gaurav shares his mothers maxim. Amma says mosaranna is a stressbuster. And the way she makes it is amazing: First, the plain curd rice is mixed with salt. On top of it a tadka of mustard seeds and curry leaves. And then a garnish of raw onions, pomegranate and cashews. For sides, mango pickle and lemon pickle. My family just cannot do without curd rice! Mosaranna was the chief guest at most Bengaluru buffets, Udupi hotels and local functions in the early 2000s, standing tall among the butter masalas, gobi manchurians and jalebis. To my six-year-old eyes, the ruby-red arils encasing the pomegranate seeds looked like little jewels on a snow-capped mountain. How could I not salivate at the sight of it? So much so that when an aunty walked up to me while I was shamelessly wolfing down my mosaranna and jokingly asked if she could have some, I blurted out a big No! and ran away. My parents faces understandably flushed red with embarrassment but I couldnt care lessI loved my curd rice! And though a good scolding from amma followed, the sleep I got that night was unparalleled. Thats perhaps why Sadhvi Das from Odisha says, Pakhala bhaat is positively intoxicating. I actually feel sleepy after eating it. In Dass ghoro (house), leftover rice is soaked in water overnight and allowed to ferment. In the morning, curd is added along with a chunka (tadka/tempering) of lemon leaves, mustard seeds and green chillies. The result, Das says, is absolutely delicious. We also call it chunka dohi pakhala and usually eat it with fried macha (fish) which has been marinated in mustard oil and masala. We also relish pakhala with spinach saag and bhortas (fried mixes) of aloo and tomato. Yum! In Palakkad native Latha Devarajans house, matta rice (red rice) is the protagonist in pazhaiya choru, which literally translates to old rice. A close relative of pakhala bhaat, the same fermentation process unfolds. Latha explains, After letting it soak overnight, we pour buttermilk over it in the morning. Most people add curd but I feel buttermilk is the healthier option. Vaddu maanga (mango pickle) is par for course. My grandmother used to say it is immunity-boosting and wards off constipation. Kochi-based engineer Thasneem Moosas family also seems to favour moru (buttermilk), generously pouring it over choru (rice). We then top it with crushed onions and chillies. It is oh, so soothing, she says. In the land of Krishnadevaraya, the Satavahanas and the Nizams todays Andhra Pradesh and Telangana ferments the cousin of pakhala bhat and pazhaiya choru: Chaddannam. Veteran South Indian actress-turned-content creator Mucherla Aruna has a soft spot for what she calls saadhannam, sharing recipes of it on her Instagram page, where she whips up numerous other quick-fix meals for her online audience. Aruna shares her mothers scrumptious yet simple recipe. When I was little, my mother would soak some leftover rice in water at night. Shed then add ample warm milk, onions, green chillies and salt. And of course, a teaspoon of curd. In those days, we didnt have a fridge so what she would do is put the saadhannam in a mud pot and keep it outside, allowing it to ferment outside overnight. In the morning, she would transfer the cool goodness onto a banana leaf, wrap it up and put it in a steel dabba. This was my school lunch every day. When Id open it, the aroma from the banana leaf, ahaperfect! Now a grandmother, Aruna makes the dish regularly for her granddaughter, who she says absolutely relishes sadhannam. She adds, In our house, summer means curd rice is a must! Though I love spicy food, I leave out the green chillies when I make it for her. With a side of avvakai pachadi (mango pachadi), it is too good, simply superb! Your humble summer sakhi They say that in India, the dialect changes every 50 kilometres. Well, since the taste of curd varies from hut to hut, the dish will also don myriad hats every few metres! The culinary elasticity of this friendly concoction means there is no one way to make it. You are the gastronomic genie: If you want mushy rice, so be it. If you want five side dishes, so be it. If you want to make your taste buds tingle with heaps of pickles and thokkus, voila, wish granted! Ahahow I love my thayir saadam, perugannam, chaddannam, mosaranna, pazhaiya choru, pakhala bhaat, dahi chaawal and so much more! In a country where innumerable oily, crispy, spicy and savoury competitors throng the culinary battlefield, there is one dish and its many avatars of course that binds Indias palates and hearts: our humble curd rice. Hmm..are you mixing the rice and curd yet? Have you added salt? What about the tadka? Oh, and do not forget to add lime pickle as Meenakshi paati says. Well, however you make it, be rest assured, your tummy and tongue will tango in joyyes, curd rice is your summer saviour.

Government passed the buck to Uttarakhand on Patanjali ads

NEW DELHI: It wasnt just the Uttarakhand authorities, the Ayush Ministry, and the Health Ministry that failed to take any action against Yoga Guru Ramdevs Patanjali Ayurved for repeatedly violating an act dealing with misleading advertisements of Ayush products, but also the Consumer Protection Authority, which, despite having more powers, merely forwarded the RTI complaints to other regulatory bodies for action under weaker laws. Kerala-based KV Babu, who has been persistently pursuing misleading advertisements issued by Ramdev for Ayush products claiming cures for various conditions from blood pressure and diabetes to liver ailments, said the only time the CCPA took action was in 2022. The CCPA, under the Consumer Affairs Ministry, informed him two years ago that they had issued a notice to Divya Pharmacy and Patanjali Wellness and forwarded the complaint to the Ayush Ministry. However, Babu said the series of complaints he made to the CCPA in July 2022 was intended to be examined under the Consumer Protection Act 2019. Under the new Act, the CCPA is empowered to conduct investigations into violations of consumer rights, including misleading advertisements by pharmaceutical companies. The CCPA is legally mandated to investigate and act against misleading advertising under the act. In its latest reply, dated March 20, the CCPA gave the same response to Babu. The matter relates to public health and is in violation of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisement) Act 1954, section 3 (d) and section 106 (1), Schedule J of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Rules 1945. As the issue does not fall under the category of misleading advertisements and must be dealt with by the Ministry of Ayush, the complaint is forwarded herewith for necessary action, said the reply from K Mahendran, Under Secretary of the CCPA, to Babus RTI filed on March 8, 2024. The letter was addressed to the Ayush Ministry. Babu said it seems the CCPA is acting like a postman. Instead of taking action under stringent law, the CCPA just forwarded my complaint to the State Licensing Authority (SLA) in Uttarakhand via the Ministry of Ayush. They are behaving like postmen, passing the buck, said Babu, who sent another letter to the Consumer Affairs Ministry on May 10. The complaints I filed are not just about contraventions of the DMR Act but also about misleading ads. The CCPA has the mandate to investigate complaints against misleading ads under the stronger CPA 2019 and cant just pass the buck to other regulatory authorities to take action under the weaker DMR Act, Babu said. CCPA can act against misleading ads Under the new act, the CCPA is empowered to conduct investigations into violations of consumer rights, including misleading advertisements. Kerala-based Babu has been pursuing misleading ads issued by Ramdev for Ayush products claiming cures for various conditions from blood pressure and diabetes to liver ailments.

Uttarakhand: Special focus on health screening of people above 50 years of age coming for Chardham Yatra

Uttarakhand: Special focus on health screening of people above 50 years of age coming for Chardham Yatra Uttarakhand Health Secretary Dr R Rajesh Kumar on Tuesday said that there has been a special focus on health screening of people above 50 years of age coming for the Chardham Yatra. The officials and members of the Dehradun chapter of the Public Relations Society of India met the Secretary of Health Dr R. Rajesh Kumar at the Secretariat on Tuesday. On this occasion, the Secretary of Health said that the increasing number of pilgrims in the currently ongoing Chardham Yatra has emerged as a challenge. In such a situation, the Health Department is providing all facilities including health checkups to the devotees. Last year during the Yatra period, health checkup of about seven and a half lakh people above 55 years of age was done. This time our target is to conduct as many health checkups as possible of people above 50 years of age. This time 184 doctors have been deployed on the Yatra route. Last year 140 doctors were deployed. These include 44 specialist doctors, Kumar said. He said that last year for the first time, along with the doctors deployed in the Yatra, an honorarium was arranged for the para-medical staff through the National Health Mission (NHM). This arrangement is being continued this time also. The Health Secretary said that there has always been a lack of super speciality centres on the Chardham Yatra route. In view of this, a cath lab has been started in Srinagar Medical College this time. Along with this, new super speciality centres are being encouraged to provide their services through the 'You Quote We Pay' scheme. SOPs related to the Yatra have been issued in a total of 11 languages. Along with sending these SOPs to the secretaries of all the states, they are also being distributed to the pilgrims coming on the Yatra in their language through the staff so that they do not face any kind of problem. In this SOP, information has been given about what to do and what not to do during the Yatra, the Secretary of Health said. Kumar said that a medical point has been set up for the first time in Janaki Chatti. PSRI has an important role in the field of public relations. It can make an important contribution to giving information about various schemes and programs for public awareness. He said that the organization should be expanded from the district to the block level, this will not only make it meaningful but PSRI will also become such a network that will reach every person.
