'MS Knows What He Is Going To Do': CSK Bowling Coach Eric Simons Claims Dhoni Has Made Up Mind On His Future

Chennai Super Kings: Following the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) elimination from playoff contention with a loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), CSK bowling coach Eric Simons spoke out about MS Dhonis contribution to the team and his future. Dhonis retirement from the IPL is one of the biggest talking points as the 42-year-old former Indian captain is speculated to have played his last game for the men in yellow, a team which he has led to five IPL titles. There are so many memories of MS Dhoni, the knocks that he plays get you out of trouble. I was in the dugout and said it was incredible we are in a situation with our backs against the wall and he is at the wicket you just don't stop believing he can win for you, So I think that is one of the things that he brings to the group is the incredible self-belief. But he has a very simple structure and understanding of the game. I think that's what a lot of cricketers should strive for to, really understand the game and he does and he helps guys with that sort of information and knowledge so it is not to play like MS but understand your game and that's where MS is tremendous, said Eric. RCB pulled off a major comeback to upset the CSK fans as the team now sitting in fourth place was lurking towards the bottom end of the table for the first half of the season. What followed was incredible as they won the next six games on the trot to progress to the next stage where they will face either Rajasthan Royals or Sunrisers Hyderabad depending on the final two league games of the season. But I think anybody wants to speculate about his future, that is crazy. MS knows what he is going to do. I know that this year I have seen him hit the ball from the pre-tournament camp. So he is playing extremely well and he will make the decision. But he is a fantastic guy to be around. He has been fantastic to witness from the days I was with India and now with CSK. He is an incredible cricketer and an incredible individual in terms of his understanding of cricket and life. I think in many ways that what he passes on to guys is the incredible self-belief, never say die and a simple understanding of the game of cricket he can put it in simple words and I think that is one of the best things about him, added Simons.

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh reveals his picks for finalists of IPL 2024

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh reveals his picks for finalists of IPL 2024 Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh named Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders as the two teams he feels will play the Indian Premier League (IPL) final. After enduring a month full of defeats in April, RCB are flying high with six wins on the trot. They defied the mathematical odds and punched their ticket for the playoffs following a 27-run against Chennai Super Kings on Saturday at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. After scripting a story nothing short of a fairytale, RCB became the first side ever to qualify for the knockout stage after registering a sole win in their first seven games of a season. The Challengers became the fourth team after Rajasthan Royals, table-toppers Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad to qualify for the playoffs. With the form that RCB are enjoying, Harbhajan feels that Kohli and KKR team mentor Gautam Gambhir who have had their on-field scuffle will return to face each other in the final. I feel that RCB and KKR will play the final. If that happens Kohli and Gambhir will be back to face each other. RCB can win the trophy from this point, they have fought hard for each run. If they play with this energy then it will be hard to stop this team, Harbhajan Singh said on his YouTube channel. The hype around Kohli and Gambhir's rivalry started to build in the previous edition of the IPL. A verbal spat between the Lucknow Super Giants bowler Naveen-ul-Haq and Royal Challengers Bangalore star batter Virat Kohli. LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir became the central figure as he was seen having an animated conversation with Virat after the match. Players, including KL Rahul, and support staff were seen separating the two. Kohli was then seen having a lengthy chat with LSG captain KL Rahul. In their second encounter of the previous season, Kohli had celebrated the fall of the LSG wickets during their innings in his trademark animated aggression. He was seen blowing kisses to the crowd after RCB won the game. However, during this year's IPL match between Gambhir's KKR and Virat's RCB, a lot of fans were excited about the possibility of another aggressive face-off between these two Indian stars. However, both Gambhir and Virat were spotted smiling and hugging each other, possibly hinting towards putting their past behind them. (ANI)

Loyalty test in Bengaluru amidst rain

BENGALURU: Despite the lack of tactical advantage at the venue, M Chinnaswamy Stadium has always bled red for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Even on the morning of the clash against Chennai Super Kings, one could see fans chanting RCB, RCB, RCB from a BMTC bus while crossing the ground on Queens Road. And yet, as the evening wore on, despite the rain forecast, the colour began to change. Yellow slowly started creeping in. The No. 7 (MS Dhoni) yellow jerseys seemed to be the most visible one around the venue, followed by the No. 18 Virat Kohli T-shirts. One of the fans even took it to the next level, donning a MS Dhoni No. 7 jersey in RCB colours. That pretty much set the mood for the contest. Inside the venue, it was hard to tell who the home team was. Every RCB chant was matched by a CSK chant with almost equal number of yellow jerseys in the stands. It was understandable to a large extent, considering how it could well be the last game of Dhoni should Chennai end up on the losing side. With the prediction of rain around, Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and opted to field, and RCB openers Kohli and Faf du Plessis came out all guns blazing. In the second over, Shardul Thakur went for 16 runs followed by a 13-run over from Tushar Deshpande as RCB raced to 31/0 in three overs. That is when the sky opened up and the rain stopped playing. Now, RCB have been on a bit of a winning streak, with five wins in a row. But the road to here has been far from smooth. At one point, RCB had seven losses in eight games and were at the bottom of the points table. It is not just the losses that hurt, but also the manner in which they happened. Before their one-run loss in Kolkata (7th one), they had conceded a record total at home against Sunrisers Hyderabad and lost by 25 runs, largely thanks to Dinesh Karthiks heroics. Among the many honest conversations that happened within the dressing room was a discussion within the spin bowling group. Until the KKR game, RCB had played a frontline spinner Karn Sharma only once; in the opening game of the season against CSK. Since then, they had opted for batting depth and went with part-timers, but it clearly hadnt worked. That is when Karn, Swapnil Singh and other spinners went to the team management. We had a chat, especially as a spin group, we talked to the coach and said we havent used the spinners so well. They took it in a very nice way, recalled Swapnil in a chat with this daily. Karn played against KKR, in their next game, an away contest in Hyderabad, RCB went back to playing two spinners, including Swapnil. That, among other things like Rajat Patidar and Will Jacks getting into the groove, proved to be a crucial piece of the puzzle. RCB won that match by 35 runs. And the spin duo Karn and Swapnil shared four wickets between themselves. Since then, the two spinners have played every game and RCB has continued to win all four. God has been kind, says Swapnil with a big smile. We have had two spinners all the way through till now that has been the changed and things have worked out for the spin group as well, he adds. Even as the play resumed on Saturday after a 41-minute break, once again, RCB would rely on Swapnil and Karn to do the job later in the night for them to get across the line.

Bhuvi key as SRH look for good show vs PBKS

HYDERABAD: Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been the most economical bowler for Sunrisers Hyderabad, so far. With other bowlers struggling to contain runs, the former India pacer stands tall even if his figures too seem to be at the higher end. To start with, Bhuvneshwar has not had the best of the season as he went wicketless in the five of the first 10 games. Bhuvneshwar gradually found his mojo back to not only claim wickets but also bowl miserly. With the team in the play-offs, the bowlers form gains more significance and SRH assistant coach Simon Helmot is confident that his experience will be invaluable. Hes one of the leaders of our attack. Hes been in many playoffs before. We know his experience will be invaluable, Helmot said on the eve of the match. Sanjay Rastogi, childhood coach of the bowler, also echoed the sentiments and said his ward has remained the same even after years of international cricket. No matter which match he plays, be it a practice game or a club match or an international fixture, he always plays with the same intensity. I know the team management decides on the combination and its the prerogative of selectors to pick up the squad but the way Bhuvi has been bowling, I strongly feel he should be there in the team. The team will miss him during the T20 World Cup, Rastogi told this daily. With SRH taking on Punjab Kings in their last league outing on Sunday afternoon here in Hyderabad, Bhuvneshwar will have to be at his best as a win will help the team to finish second on the points table giving them two chances to qualify for the final. Helmot also knows how important Bhuvneshwar is for the team. I know hes a person who Pat (Cummins) will often lean on, especially out in the middle when the pressures on. But Bhuvi as well as a number of our senior players are obviously going to be really important when it comes to big matches, he signed off. Rain threat It rained heavily at Uppal, where the Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium is situated, on Saturday evening. The heavy downpour meant SRH had to cancel its training. There is a forecast of rain for Sunday.

Hyderabad researcher finds obesity-kidney ailment link after nine years of research

HYDERABAD: In a breakthrough for the ages, researchers from the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) and the University of Hyderabad (UoH) have uncovered a correlation between obesity and kidney-related diseases. Led by Dr Anil Kumar Pasupulati, associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry at UoH, and Dr G Bhanuprakash Reddy, scientist at NIN, the study found that obesity has an adverse impact on the kidney and can go on to completely damage the organ. Dr Anil has spent over nine years on this research, starting during his PhD days. His team studied various models, literature and data to establish the correlation between obesity and kidney health. Funded by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), their findings were recently published in the prestigious International Journal of Obesity, a Nature Press Journal. Using the Wistar NIN-Obese rat model and a high-fat (40%) fed mice model, the researchers observed that crucial kidney cells called podocytes exhibited cellular distortions, indicating injury due to obesity, in obese rodent models. Additionally, both models displayed severe levels of proteinuria, further highlighting the detrimental effects of obesity on kidney health. Of particular interest was the up-regulation of the WT1 (Wilms Tumor1) transcription factor in podocytes from obese rats and high-fat-fed mice. Normally associated with kidney development in embryos, WT1 expression is minimal in adults and confined to podocytes. However, in obese rodent models, the researchers observed a reactivation of WT1, coinciding with increased mobility of otherwise static podocytes. Speaking to TNIE , Dr Anil stated, During the research, we discovered that the WT1 protein was elevated in the obese mice, particularly those on a fat-rich diet, unlike the mice that were comparatively healthy and not exposed to a high-fat diet. We also observed cellular distortions in the podocytes within the nephrons of the kidneys in the obese mice. This suggests a significant correlation between WT1 levels, proteinuria and obesity, indicating that obesity can lead to kidney-related ailments in the long run. Analysing big data from patients with chronic kidney disease proved to be a formidable challenge due to the volume and time-consuming nature of the data. However, their analysis revealed elevated WT1 expression in podocytes and their precursors, providing compelling evidence that obesity contributes to kidney-related diseases.

I will be attending conferences and participating in case challenges, Rahul tells TNIE over the phone. He is pursuing a Bachelors in Finance and Economics at the University of Texas in Dallas. The 20-year-old started his chess journey around 14 years back at the age of six. He was introduced to this peaceful yet intellectually stimulating game, as he puts it, of 64 squares by his mother, Vijaya Lakshmi P. For her, it was a way to inculcate a new hobby as well as an escape from the outdoor activities, which she felt were not productive for her child. Furthermore, she was left impressed by Rahuls attention span at such a tender age. Every day, there used to be advertisements in newspapers to get the children enrolled. That is when I thought it was better to enrol him in a local academy instead of merely indulging in nuisance with other children. His concentration power was also remarkable. Whenever I would give him some work, he would sit until the time, sometimes for hours, he finishes it, Vijaya, a former microbiologist, tells TNIE. However, within a period of a few months, both she and her spouse, Srikanth Peddi, an engineer with a Japanese firm, noticed immense progress in their sons game. We were shocked to see that he started winning tournaments within a few months. After that, my husband, who is both a chess and cricket enthusiast, started focusing daily on his game with him. Coaches also started approaching us to make Rahul enrol in their respected academies, recollects Vijaya. But as the adage says, you cant taste success until you taste failure. The same happened with the GM, who achieved the coveted title in 2022 after breaking the 2500 (Elo points) barrier in live FIDE (International Chess Federation) ratings during the 9th Cattolica Chess Festival in Italy. Ups and downs Rahul views that the most significant hurdle in his career so far emerged during my pursuit of the GM title, right around the Covid-19 pandemic. My progress stalled, leaving me and my team perplexed. I realized that the onus for my chess growth ultimately fell on me and I began practising to improve my game, not just at the request of my parents or coach. This mindset shift was crucial for my growth in chess, he asserts, adding that getting the final norm (a high level of performance in a tournament) was a defining moment in his chess career. With a FIDE rating of 2452, he currently stands in the 1073rd spot globally and 67th in India. All these years Vijaya, who accompanied her son to the majority of the tournaments, believes that learning comes more from losing than winning. She has followed a special mantra to cope with bad days at tournaments. While travelling with him, I used to read psychology books, from which I picked up a few things. We both used to go on long walks when he had lost a certain game and discuss the plan on the way back. The 20-year-old, an alumnus of Sadhu Vaswani International School in Hyderabad, trained under Murli Krishna Gangaraju at his academy in Ponnur, Guntur, from 2011 to 2015. Later, he shifted to the RACE Academy of noted coach NVS Ramaraju who has trained both Indias second-highest-ranked player Arjun Erigaisi as well as grandmaster Dronavalli Harika in Madhapur and later with Dutch GM Sipke Ernst. Rahuls major achievements include winning the Washington Open and podium finishes at the World Open, Philadelphia Open, Asian Youth (Under 10) and Commonwealth chess championships. He used to enjoy every activity: playing games or solving puzzles. At that time only, he had this peculiar quality of playing games against two to three people at once in a blindfold format. He usually played with the older kids in the academy and gradually matured ahead of time, recounts Gangaraju while speaking to TNIE. During the pandemic, a change of mindset led Rahul to realise the significance of studies as much as chess in his life. After seeing other children focusing on their careers during the pandemic, he also made up his mind to study and got a full scholarship, his mother adds. Just like his peers, the Candidates event 2024 was special for him. For him, the most important reason was that it featured an unprecedented number of Indian players (three). He also lauded the impressive accomplishment of Tamil Nadus teenage chess prodigy, Gukesh D, who went on to win the coveted event. Request for governmental support Meanwhile, Rahul hopes that the Telangana government will also start providing support to chess players on par with Tamil Nadu. We are a state which has 7 GMs, one of the highest in the country. Growing up, I saw players from other states benefiting from coaching camps, international tournaments and financial rewards. Unfortunately, our state has lagged significantly in providing such support, he laments. He is currently training with GM Julio Sadorra of the Philippines at his university. For his mother, most of the players belong to middle-class income groups, who require the support of the state government. Rahul has also not received the GM reward (around Rs 3 lakhRs 4 lakh). Only one player has received the amount (Rs 2.5 crore awarded to V Praneeth by the previous BRS government). Like Tamil Nadu, if the Telangana government also provides proper support, more players will come up, otherwise, they will also think why to play and instead focus on their careers, stresses Vijaya.

Beating heat with green mesh canopies in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Motorists waiting at the Liberty X Road junction traffic signal have found it easier to bear the heat thanks to a makeshift green mesh canopy installed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in collaboration with the Hyderabad Traffic Police. To offer relief from the harsh heat, particularly during the afternoon hours, the GHMC and the Hyderabad Traffic Police have erected green mesh shades at traffic signals to protect motorists, especially those on two-wheelers and vulnerable groups such as women and children, from the intense heat while waiting at signals. These have been installed at Liberty Junction, City Light Hotel, Ranigunj, Shapur Nagar and a few other locations in the city. The green nets, resembling pandals, cover an area of 810 metres in length and 78 metres in breadth. The structures comply with Indian Road Congress design standards, ensuring at least a five-metre vertical clearance from the road to allow large vehicles to pass through. These shades have been put up before the zebra crossing at signals. Sources said these nets have been instaled at traffic junctions where the waiting period is longer due to high traffic flow and the absence of large trees to provide shade. The nets provide relief from the scorching heat, especially for motorists enduring prolonged waits. Initially, the GHMC plans to instal these green nets at traffic junctions in 30 circles. The nets will remain in place until daytime temperatures become bearable. The traffic police have backed the initiative, noting its positive impact on motorists behaviour and adherence to traffic rules. The provision of shade encourages motorists to wait patiently at traffic signals and can help deter people from jumping signals, thereby enhancing road safety, officials said. Some motorists tend to jump signals to escape the severe heat, but the shades help mitigate this issue, they added.

Telangana phone tapping: Raghunandan asks DGP to probe Venkatram Reddys cash distribution

HYDERABAD: BJP nominee from Medak M Raghunandan Rao on Saturday lodged a formal complaint with DGP Ravi Gupta accusing BRS candidate P Venkataram Reddy of severe misconduct pertaining to phone-tapping case and sought an inquiry by a senior IPS officer. In his complaint, the BJP leader said that a series of confessions and statements from police officials reveal a pattern of illegal money collection and distribution during the Assembly elections. He said that former Task Force OSD Radha Kishan Rao, who is named in a case registered with Punjagutta police station, confessed on March 29, that he was closely associated with Venkataram Reddy and admitted to collecting large sums of money from Hyderabad-based businesspersons and transporting these funds using government vehicles to various election sites in November 2023. Raghunandan said that Task Force Sub-Inspector Sara Sai Kiran corroborated these claims in his statement under Section 161(3) Cr... on March 29, that he was tasked by Radha Kishan to distribute money on behalf of Venkataram Reddy and Raj Pushpa Constructions. With support of KCR The former MLAs complaint also included details from another confession by Radha Kishan during his custody on March 9, where he confirmed that Raj Pushpa Constructions had been funding the BRS during the elections. He alleged that Venkataram Reddy misused his position with the support of former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and his family and asserted that no action has been taken against the former IAS officer.

Vigilance probe ordered against Kakatiya university Vice-Chancellor

HYDERABAD, WARANGAL: The state government has ordered a Vigilance and Enforcement (V&E) department probe against Kakatiya University Vice-Chancellor Prof Thatikonda Ramesh. The principal secretary of the education department, Burra Venkatesham, wrote to the director general of the V&E department on Saturday, asking for an enquiry into the allegations made by faculty members against the V-C of illegally ordering transfers, unlawfully retaining terminated faculty members, making unfair academic appointments and approving fake projects. The faculty members of the university have also alleged that the V-C manipulated the system of transfers of professors and did not follow the guidelines set by the government for hiring academicians. It has come to light that, contrary to the UGC norms, 16 retired professors were appointed as adjunct faculty. Moreover, the V-C did not allegedly adhere to the minimum qualifications required while admitting candidates into PhD programmes and filled the admissions for postgraduate courses without adhering to UGC guidelines. Allegations were also made against the V-C regarding contract work allocated by him to his loyalists in exchange for bribes and that he discriminated against women in the recruitment process. Meanwhile, the general secretary of Kakatiya University Teachers Association, Prof Dr Estari Mamidala, said that as per UGC norms, for a V-C to be appointed, a professor must have at least 10 years of experience. However, the previous BRS government appointed Prof Thatikonda as the V-C even though he did not have a decade of experience, he added. The general secretary alleged that teachers, students and non-teaching employees have faced various problems due to the rule of an unqualified V-C.

Jaw broken, girls harassed: Indian students in Bishkek live in fear

HYDERABAD: Locked inside his university hostel at Kyrgyzstans capital Bishkek, where the gates were shut and the lights were turned off by the administration so they could stay safe, a Telangana-based medical student, Fayzan, told TNIE on Saturday that although the violence was temporarily curbed, a mob had openly sent out a warning to the Indians and Pakistanis that there would be another attack in the night. India advises its students in Bishkek to stay indoors after mob violence On the night of May 17, an angry mob of locals entered two universities in the capital city, broke the windows of the hostels and targeted foreign nationals, especially Indian and Pakistani nationals. They attacked foreign students and misbehaved with girls. An acquaintance suffered a broken jaw and a few others sustained minor injuries, said Fayzan. Following the mob violence, the Indian embassy released a statement that the situation is presently calm and advised all students to stay indoors and contact the Mission in case of any problems. However, many Indian students that TNIE had contacted expressed fear as locals were circulating hate messages on TikTok and other social media platforms. The driver of a taxi I had previously travelled in sent me a video of the mob violence and threatened to beat me as well, said a student from Uttar Pradesh. While students living in university hostels shared that there were local police and Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) deployed outside the campus, those living in private accommodations do not have the same kind of security. Students living in flats have been asked to not step out of their accommodations. In case of an emergency, they have been advised to carry their visas and passports, said a student from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, who did not want to be named. However, that does not make any difference. The mob does not look into the passports before attacking, his friend added. The violence, which started following an alleged altercation between the locals and Egyptians on May 13, has led to a series of incidents where foreign nationals have been targeted. While university officials are ensuring that the students in campus are safe, those living outside the campus are demanding police security and provision of essentials, said Dr Apurva, the national convenor of the All Indian Medical Students Association Foreign Medical Students Wing (AIMSA-FMSW). Another member of the AIMSA-FMSW, Dr Vasundhara said, We are concerned as we have been unable to reach out to a few of the Indian students. We are trying to keep in touch with as many students as possible and check in on their safety. Amidst the tense situation, the student from Uttar Pradesh told TNIE, A couple of Indian students who stay elsewhere in the country, have left Kyrgyzstan fearing violence. They are not in Bishkek, but are afraid and have taken the road to leave the country. Even as the students are expecting that the situation would most likely be back to normal in a few days, they insist, Only if the Indian government and agencies take a major action or put pressure on the Kyrgyzstan government, will the situation change. Else, we are worried that this might repeat.

RCB survives a scare to grab final IPL play-off berth with 27-win over CSK

RCB survives a scare to grab final IPL play-off berth with 27-win over CSK Royal Challengers Bengaluru continued their fairytale run to grab the fourth and final play-off berth with a 27-run victory over defending champions Chennai Super Kings in their must-win last IPL league game here on Saturday. It was the sixth straight win for RCB, who first posted a solid 218 for five after being invited to bat and then restricted CSK to 191 for 7 to make it to the play-offs for the ninth time in 15 seasons. RCB survived a scare as Ravindra Jadeja (42 not out) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (25) had conjured up hopes of a turnaround after Rachin Ravindra's 61 but Yash Dayal held his nerves in the final over to take the hosts home. Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad have already qualified for the play-offs. While it was ecstasy for RCB, the legion of fans of Dhoni sank into despair as it could potentially be the last time they witnessed their 'Thala' perform on a cricket field. Down and out after losing seven out of their first eight games, RCB had weaved five wins on the trot to script a remarkable turnaround and give themselves a chance to make it to the final four. On Saturday, the hosts needed to win by at least 18 runs to book the final play-off berth and they did that in style with yet another impressive show at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The two teams finished at 14 points but RCB sneaked into the final four on the basis of a better net run-rate. The equation was in favour of CSK when they began their run-chase as a 200-plus score would have sealed their place in the final four at the expense of RCB even if they had lost the game. However, CSK lost skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (0) and Daryl Mitchell (4) to be reduced to 19 for 2 in the third over. Ajinkya Rahane (33) and Ravindra (61) steadied the innings with a 64-run stand but Lockie Ferguson broke the partnership as the former was holed out by du Plessis and then the New Zealander was run out. Du Plessis then took a screamer to remove Mitchell Santner as CSK slipped to 129 for 6 in 15 overs. With their backs to the wall, Jadeja and Dhoni added a whirlwind 61 off 27 balls to bring the equation down to 11 off five balls to qualify for the play-offs. With CSK needing 17 runs off the last six balls to qualify, Yash Dayal bowled the final over and he was straight away smashed for a six by Dhoni but the pacer came back strongly to dismiss the former CSK skipper and then conceded just one run in next five balls to seal it for RCB. Earlier, sent in to bat, RCB's top-order, led by skipper du Plessis, fired in unison. Du Plessis hit three fours and three sixes on his way to a 39-ball 54, his fourth fifty of the season, while Virat Kohli (47 off 29 balls), Rajat Patidar (41 off 23 balls) and Cameron Green (38 not out off 17 balls) also went on a six-hitting spree to put RCB on solid ground. Openers Kohli and du Plessis began on a positive note and were 31 for no loss when there was a short rain interruption, causing a 40-minute delay. However, on resumption, CSK pressed spinners into the attack. With the ball gripping and turning, spin duo of Maheesh Theekshana (25/0) and Mitchell Santner (23/0) troubled the batters as RCB reached 42 for no loss at the end of the Powerplay. Kohli brought out his slog sweep to clobber two more sixes before holing out to Daryl Mitchell off Santner as RCB slipped to 78 for one in 10 overs. Ravindra Jadeja (40/0 in 3 overs) was however slaughtered by du Plessis, who blasted a four and two sixes to pile up 20 runs off his third over and then completed his 35-ball fifty. Rajat Patidar (41) then got into the act, depositing Theekshana for a maximum. In the 13th over, du Plessis was unfortunately run out at the bowler's end but Patidar continued his onslaught, smashing Simarjeet Singh for a four and a six, while Thakur conceded 17 with Green thumping one over long-on to bring up the 150. Green was, however, dropped by Gaikwad in the deep but Patidar continued to put the bowler under pressure as he smoked Deshpande for two sixes. Green then picked up successive sixes off Thakur, who had Patidar caught at the other end but it was too late as cameos from Dinesh Kartik (14) and Glenn Maxwell (16) swelled the total.

IPL 2024: Delight for RCB, heartbreak for CSK

BENGALURU: A month ago, Bengaluru had seemingly gone beyond the point of no return. After eight matches, they had won one and lost seven. Now, in the most incredible of circumstances, they have engineered a run to the knock-out stages for the ages. In a do-or-die clash against Chennai, five-time champions Chennai, they won by 27 runs for their sixth win on the trot. In the process, they leapfrogged MS Dhoni & Co (was this his last match?) on NRR. In a couple of days, they will walk out in Ahmedabad, the scene of where the rejuvenation began against Gujarat when Will Jacks and Virat Kohli finished a 200+ run chase with more than three overs to go. When the match began on Saturday, Kohli and Faf du Plessis, as they have done lots of times already in the second half of the campaign in 2024, started like a train (31/0 in three overs). After all, they knew what was at stake play-off spot for them and what to expect rain interruptions. Having lost the toss, they had no choice but to start in fourth gear. And that is exactly what they did. Kohli took on Tushar Deshpande two sixes in the third over, one of which hit the roof to set the momentum, but that is when rain had put the brakes. A much-needed relief for Chennai captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who immediately brought on the spinners when play resumed. Maheesh Theekshana and Mitchell Santner operated from either end something that probably should have happened even before the rain break keeping the RCB openers quiet. And it worked. In the next three overs, they could manage only 12 runs. Kohli decided to step up. He, first went hard against Ravindra Jadeja and then against Santner to keep the boundaries coming. It is a facet of Kohli we are seeing this season, attempting to take on the spinners at will. Much to the delight of the crowd, he even employed his newfound slog sweep to smash Jadeja into the stands. And once he fell to Santner, Du Plessis did his part by smashing Jadeja for 20 runs. It was almost as if they were applying the mathematics rule of two negatives (match-ups) making a positive. Santner, once again, came to the rescue, getting rid of Du Plessis but it only brought a better hitter of spin to the crease Rajat Patidar. Now until a couple of weeks ago, it seemed like the black magic spell that was cast on Patidar had followed him into the RCB dressing room. But it all wore off in Hyderabad. It is no coincidence that RCB started winning once he started taking apart spinners for fun in the middle-overs. Such was his spin-hitting that Gaikwad turned to pacers once he came in a move that provided to be anticlimactic this time. Patidar hit Simarjeet Singh and then Theekshana came, followed by Thakur, who too was taken for 17 runs. With Cameron Green for support, Patidar became the hero RCB needed. They added 71 runs from 28 balls as RCB looked well set for score closer to 220. That is when Patidar fell, trying to hit Thakur into the stands. When things are going your way, you seldom put your foot wrong. RCB were in one such zone as they promoted Dinesh Karthik ahead of Glenn Maxwell, ensuring Gaikwad did not finish Jadejas quota of overs. Karthik hit a six and a four before passing the baton to Maxwell. The Australian started with a top edge for four and followed it with two more boundaries as RCB posted 218/5 in 20 overs. In the end, it proved to be good enough for the hosts. Brief scores: Royal Challengers Bengaluru 218/5 in 20 ovs (Du Plessis 54, Kohli 47, Patidar 41) bt Chennai Super Kings 191/7 in 20 ovs (Rachin 61, Jadeja 42 n.o; Dayal 2/42).
