Former U'khand CM under fire for intervening in HC transfer case

DEHRADUN: Amidst the controversy surrounding the Uttarakhand High Court's order to shift from Nainital, lawyers have petitioned the Supreme Court to challenge the decision. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister and Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari requested the incumbent Chief Minister to intervene in the matter, supporting Kumaon lawyers who are opposing the High Court relocation issue. A special leave petition has been filed in the Supreme Court by lawyers hailing from various districts of Kumaon, including members of the High Court Bar Association, opposing the directive issued by the double bench led by Nainital High Court Chief Justice Ritu Bahri to relocate the High Court to IDPL Rishikesh. Conversely, advocates in the capital city of Dehradun criticized Koshyari's letter, stating that at his age, he should focus on spiritual pursuits like 'Ram Bhajan' rather than engaging in politics. Speaking to TNIE, Rajeev Sharma, President of the Dehradun Bar Association, stated, Our legal team has been closely monitoring this entire situation. Renowned advocate Siddharth Luthra is representing us, and we are prepared to intervene as a local stakeholder if necessary. According to the information received, The Supreme Court had listed the matter for July 8 under a special leave petition, in response to which lawyers from Nainital sought an earlier date in court citing urgency. The court has fixed a date for May 24 on this matter. Our teams are consistently visiting colleges, schools, and institutions to ensure maximum participation of people in the public opinion gathering, President Rajeev Sharma told this newspaper. Speaking to The New Indian Express, DCS Rawat, the president of the High Court Bar Association, stated, We are vehemently opposing the shifting of the High Court or establishment of benches, and in this regard, we have filed our petition in the Supreme Court. It is appropriate for the High Court to remain in Nainital to maintain harmony among the regions of Garhwal, Kumaon, and the plains of the state. It was decided at the time of the state's formation that the capital Dehradun and the High Court would be in Nainital. Any change in this regard would tamper with the fundamental sentiments of the residents, Rawat added.

IIT Roorkee scientists develop machine to convert pine needles into sustainable livelihood

DEHRADUN: Pine needles, commonly referred to as pirul, have been a primary catalyst for forest fires in Uttarakhand and other mountainous regions of the country. However, an innovative low-budget machine developed by scientists at IIT Roorkee, will not only help curtail the spread of these fires but will also help transform the pine needles into a sustainable source of income for local communities. Speaking to The New Indian Express, Dr Vinay Sharma, a scientist and project leader at the Department of Management Studies, IIT, said, The development of the machine commenced approximately 12 years ago. Subsequently, in 2019, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change awarded us a project. As a result, the machine was engineered to compress pine needles, known as pirul, into bricks. The research endeavor led by Dr Sharma was conducted in collaboration with Dr Rajat Agarwal. IIT has also patented this research. In Uttarakhand, a trial was conducted by installing 6 machines each in Chopda village above Kathgodam and Shyamkhet village near Bhawali Nainital..The trial turned out to be fully successful, Dr Sharma said. In 2022, 12 machines were prepared on the demand of the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department, which has went on to become a means of livelihood for the people there, he added. In Himachal Pradesh as well, amidst a comparable challenge of forest fires, officials from the forest department reached out to us. We have authorized them to construct the machine, Dr Sharma said. According to researchers, the machine weighs approximately 90 kg, allowing for easy portability between locations. When Pirul is loaded into the machine, it undergoes compression at a pressure of 1000 to 1200 PSI. No electricity or battery costs are incurred in its operation. Plans are underway to automate the process through solar technology.

SC Takes Strong Stance: Criminal Contempt Notice Issued to DDA Vice Chairman for Southern Ridge Tree Felling

SC Takes Strong Stance: Criminal Contempt Notice Issued to DDA Vice Chairman for Southern Ridge Tree Felling The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a criminal contempt notice against Delhi Development Authority vice-chairman Subhasish Panda for allowing large-scale felling of trees in the southern Ridge's Satbari area to construct a road from Chhattarpur to Saarc University. A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan expressed displeasure over the misleading affidavit filed by the vice chairman and presenting wrong facts in the court. It also directed planting of 100 new trees for each tree felled by the DDA. Voicing strong disapproval of the affidavit filed by the DDA vice-chairman which stated that 642 trees were cut without his knowledge, the top court said it ''cannot trust the DDA now''. ''I have been a judge in Constitutional courts for over 20 years now and I have never seen a body misrepresenting facts and filing wrong affidavits. There has to be some limit, never before seen,'' Justice Oka remarked orally. The top court noted that the felling of trees continued for 10 days and this fact was suppressed by the DDA despite knowing not a single tree could be touched in the ridge area (according to a 19995 order) without the court's permission. It also noted the Delhi LG was also misled by the DDA officials by not informing about the correct facts about the felling of trees. ''Such conduct (of DDA VC) and suppression amounts to interference with the due course of court proceedings and administration of justice. We have already issued show cause notice for civil contempt. We therefore issue notice of criminal contempt,'' the bench said. The apex court also directed the DDA to stop all further activities for construction of the road. ''We are of the view that 100 new trees for one tree felled have to be planted by the DDA. We, therefore, direct Forest Survey of India, Dehradun, to visit the road stretches to find out how many trees possibly may have been cut and assess damages. ''Entire record of contractor has to be shared. We request FSI team to submit a preliminary report to this court by June 20,'' the bench said. The top court had earlier issued contempt notice to the vice-chairman of Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for the felling of over 1,000 trees for the construction of an approach road. The apex court on March 4 had refused permission to DDA to fell 1,051 trees saying that their application is very vague. The top court had said DDA being an instrumentality of the State, it is the duty of the DDA to first make an attempt to protect the environment by requesting for felling of only those trees which are absolutely mandatory. ''They must apply their mind whether alternatives can be examined to save the trees. Moreover, they want to construct the road through a forest. There is no permission obtained under the Forest Act. ''We direct the DDA to re-examine the proposal by employing the experts in the field. The exercise to be undertaken by the DDA is necessary for ensuring that while public work is carried out, minimum number of trees are required to be felled,'' the apex court had said.

Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to be ready soon

DEHRADUN: The finalization of the fourth phase of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is in its concluding stages. Construction across four distinct sections of the expressway is currently underway, with a 12-km elevated roadway over a meandering river close to being finished. It is anticipated that by July the vehicular traffic will commence on this elevated segment of the expressway. As per official sources, upon its completion, the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway will significantly shorten the distance between the two cities from the current 235 km to 213 km, resulting in a reduction in travel time. Moreover, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has committed to preserving the existing roadway for wildlife to freely roam, in compliance with directives from the Ministries of Environment and Wildlife within the central government. Speaking to The New Indian Express , Rohit Panwar, a project engineer at the National Highways Authority of India, stated, The final segment spans from Ganeshpur in Uttar Pradesh to the Asharodi check post in Dehradun, covering a total distance of 20 km. The majority of the expressway in this section runs along the boundary of Rajaji National Park. Additionally, Panwar mentioned, This stretch will also feature Asia's longest wildlife corridor, for which a 12 km elevated flyover is currently being constructed over a seasonal river to safeguard the local wildlife. The progress on this initiative is nearing completion, with approximately 90 percent of the work done. As per NHAI sources, significant progress is being made in the initial segment of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, stretching from Delhi to Bagpat. The subsequent section, spanning from Bagpat to Saharanpur, is witnessing the construction of a new expressway, with 60 per cent of the project already accomplished. Moving on to the third section, which connects Saharanpur to Ganeshpur, construction activities are reaching their concluding stages. NHAI sources have indicated that the completion of the project is slated for June 30, with traffic expected to flow through this section starting in July. The elevated road construction is nearing completion, with only the crossing areas remaining to be finished. The comprehensive Delhi-Dehradun project is on track for full completion by December 2024.

Former Uttarakhand CM Koshyari suggests judiciary stay out of Nainital HC transfer matter

DEHRADUN: Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari has also entered the fray amidst the growing discontent among lawyers in the state. This comes in light of the ongoing dispute within bar associations across various districts following the High Court's directive to conduct a referendum on the relocation of the Nainital High Court to IDPL, Rishikesh. The former CM has penned a meticulously crafted letter comprising 10 pointed objections to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami regarding the recent High Court ruling. In his eloquent communication, he 'scrutinizes' the decision-making process of the judiciary in this particular case. Koshiyari's remarks were prompted by a ruling from the two-judge panel of the Nainital High Court led by Chief Justice Ritu Bahri, which mandated a referendum to decide on relocating the High Court to IDPL Rishikesh. In his letter, he argues, Though I may not be a legal expert, due to my long experience as a member of both Parliament and Legislature, I believe that decisions on the appointment of state institutions must be taken by Parliament or legislature, with respect for the judiciary as well. The significance of the 10-point letter, written by Bhagat Singh Koshyari, a veteran BJP leader from the Kumaon region and a staunch follower of the RSS, is being analysed from a political perspective. Koshyari is known as the political mentor of current Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who hails from Kumaon. In Kumaon, the High Court stands as the sole remaining major institution, facing threats of relocation despite the established agreement during the state's formation that the High Court would be situated in Kumaon if the capital remained in Garhwal, expressed Koshiyari with concern in his letter. Justifying the High Court's earlier decision to shift the High Court to the Golapar area of Nainital, the former CM said, The administration has taken this process forward and selected about 26 bighas of land in Goulapar and completed the process for no objection from the Forest Department. Land has also been selected for re-plantation elsewhere to compensate the forest department. In such a situation, the direction given to find an alternative place elsewhere for the High Court cannot rule out the possibility of spreading discontent in the area, said Koshiyari.

Uttarakhand: Special focus on health screening of people above 50 years of age coming for Chardham Yatra

Uttarakhand: Special focus on health screening of people above 50 years of age coming for Chardham Yatra Uttarakhand Health Secretary Dr R Rajesh Kumar on Tuesday said that there has been a special focus on health screening of people above 50 years of age coming for the Chardham Yatra. The officials and members of the Dehradun chapter of the Public Relations Society of India met the Secretary of Health Dr R. Rajesh Kumar at the Secretariat on Tuesday. On this occasion, the Secretary of Health said that the increasing number of pilgrims in the currently ongoing Chardham Yatra has emerged as a challenge. In such a situation, the Health Department is providing all facilities including health checkups to the devotees. Last year during the Yatra period, health checkup of about seven and a half lakh people above 55 years of age was done. This time our target is to conduct as many health checkups as possible of people above 50 years of age. This time 184 doctors have been deployed on the Yatra route. Last year 140 doctors were deployed. These include 44 specialist doctors, Kumar said. He said that last year for the first time, along with the doctors deployed in the Yatra, an honorarium was arranged for the para-medical staff through the National Health Mission (NHM). This arrangement is being continued this time also. The Health Secretary said that there has always been a lack of super speciality centres on the Chardham Yatra route. In view of this, a cath lab has been started in Srinagar Medical College this time. Along with this, new super speciality centres are being encouraged to provide their services through the 'You Quote We Pay' scheme. SOPs related to the Yatra have been issued in a total of 11 languages. Along with sending these SOPs to the secretaries of all the states, they are also being distributed to the pilgrims coming on the Yatra in their language through the staff so that they do not face any kind of problem. In this SOP, information has been given about what to do and what not to do during the Yatra, the Secretary of Health said. Kumar said that a medical point has been set up for the first time in Janaki Chatti. PSRI has an important role in the field of public relations. It can make an important contribution to giving information about various schemes and programs for public awareness. He said that the organization should be expanded from the district to the block level, this will not only make it meaningful but PSRI will also become such a network that will reach every person. Uttarakhand: Child rights panel chief probes illegal Madrasas in Dehradun National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chairman Priyank Kanoongo on Monday inspected illegal and unmapped Madrasas in Uttarakhand's Dehradun. Today, an inspection of illegal and unmapped Madrasas was conducted in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Children from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have been brought to Madrasa Wali Ullah Dahalvi and Madrasa Darul Uloom. There is a severe lack of basic facilities for the children to stay, where they sleep is where they eat, and where they receive religious education is where people also come to pray. Therefore, the daily routine of eating and sleeping for the children is irregular, he said in a post on X. No child is being sent to school; all children only aspire to become clerics and muftis. Children of the local clerics/mullahs attend regular schools, he said in the post. Officials from the education department are unaware of the existence of these Madrasas and are issuing notices to the state governments for necessary action, he added in the post. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) emphasizes the principle of universality and inviolability of child rights and recognizes the tone of urgency in all the child-related policies of the country. For the Commission, protection of all children in the 0 to 18 years age group is of equal importance. Thus, policies define priority actions for the most vulnerable children. This includes focus on regions that are backward or on communities or children under certain circumstances, and so on, as per the NCPCR. (ANI)

Globally, India ranks third in the net gain in average annual forest area between 2010 and 2020. Uttarakhand HC orders creation of portal to seek feedback on shifting court from Nainital

DEHRADUN: In response to the strong backlash from members of the Nainital Bar Association regarding the High Courts decision to shift to IDPL Rishikesh, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Ritu Bahri and Justice Rakesh Thapliyal has directed the Registrar General to establish a dedicated online portal to gather comprehensive views from stakeholders. The 850-acre IDPL Rishikesh land is available for relocation. There are no trees in IDPL Rishikesh, making it practical to shift the High Court here with minimal investment. Nainital faces significant challenges in terms of connectivity, medical facilities, and residential amenities, Dehradun Bar Association president Rajeev Sharma told this newspaper. The recent demise of senior advocate Paresh Tripathi due to a lack of medical care following a heart attack highlights the absence of medical facilities, Sharma added. Earlier on Wednesday, the High Court had asked the state government to explore the possibility of transferring a bench to IDPL Rishikesh. The bench has mandated the Registrar General to launch a portal by Tuesday to facilitate the collection of feedback from lawyers and litigants regarding the proposed transfer. This feedback will be gathered through a referendum conducted via the portal. According to HC sources, the portal is scheduled to commence on May 14. It will allow lawyers, litigants, and the public to participate and express their views. The window for public input will remain open until May 31, following which the outcome of the referendum is set to be disclosed on June 7. On Friday, a gathering of the office bearers of the Bar Association of Dehradun and members of the Bar Council convened in Dehradun. They unanimously supported the relocation of the Nainital HC to IDPL Rishikesh, aligning with the courts directives.

Bahu of Balangir royals questions Naveen Patnaik for ticket to Kalikesh

BHUBANESWAR/BALANGIR: Adrija Manjari Singh, who had levelled domestic violence allegation against her husband Arkesh Narayan Singh Deo and in-laws, on Thursday questioned the ruling BJD for nominating one of the members of Balangir royal family in the ensuing elections. For the Balangir Assembly segment, BJD has fielded Arkeshs elder brother Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo as its candidate. Last year, Adrija had lodged a domestic violence complaint against Arkesh and her in-laws at Dehradun police station in Uttarakhand. She had further alleged that Arkesh and her in-laws - AU Singh Deo, Bijaylaxmi Devi, brother-in-law Kalikesh and his wife Meghna Rana - were preventing her from visiting Odisha. Questioning the chief minister for giving Kalikesh the party ticket, she said she held Naveen Patnaik in high regard for taking several measures for empowerment of women in the state. When I came down to Odisha after my marriage, I had seen the chief minister doing a lot for women of the state. It is sad that his party has now given ticket to a member of the Balangir royal family, despite having knowledge of what has happened with me, she said. Stating she has no interest in joining any political party or canvassing for any candidate, Adrija said she would meet every family in the Assembly segment and share her ordeal. What happened to me should not happen to any other person. They have committed so many atrocities on a woman in their own house. How will the others in Balangir be safe under them, she said. Arkesh and Adrija had tied the knot in 2017. Responding to Adrijas claims, Arkesh accused senior Congress leader Narasingha Mishra of planting the politically motivated stunt. As Congress defeat in the election is almost certain after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik filed his nomination papers from Kantabanji, Mishra and his party are trying to spread negativity through such politically motivated stunts, he said. In 2019, Arkesh had contested on a BJD ticket from Balangir Assembly seat but lost to Mishra.

Gadkari's Vision: Delhi to Join the Ranks of Top 5 Global Cities Under BJP Leadership

Gadkari's Vision: Delhi to Join the Ranks of Top 5 Global Cities Under BJP Leadership Union Minister and senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said that Delhi will become one of top five cities in the world if people vote for the BJP and NDA to make Narendra Modi Prime Minister once again. Gadkari was addressing a public meeting at Chandni Chowk in support of BJP candidate Praveen Khandelwal. Citing various projects undertaken by the Centre in Delhi, Gadkari said his ministry alone provided funds of Rs 1.10 lakh for various infrastructure projects in Delhi, including for construction of highways and flyovers to improve the national capital's connectivity with other cities like Jaipur, Dehradun and Haridwar. He also cited proposed projects like electric cable bus between Delhi and Jaipur and amphibious plane service from Yamuna waters. ''A scheme has been prepared and amphibious planes will arrive in Delhi that will take off from the Yamuna front to go to any other destination in the country,'' Gadkari said. ''We have undertaken a plan for starting an electric cable bus from Delhi to Jaipur. Work on the project is underway for three inter-connected buses running at a speed of 120 km per hour that will cover Delhi-Jaipur distance in 2.15 hours,'' said the Union minister of road transport and highways. The electric cable buses will be air-conditioned with business class facilities like aeroplanes and the tickets of these buses will cost 30 per cent less than those of the diesel buses, he said. Gadkari further said that before December, the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun will be reduced to two hours and that between Delhi and Haridwar will become just 1.5 hours, due to the highways being developed by the Centre. He also cited various projects and funds from the Centre to clean the Yamuna river and improve water supply in the city, apart from infrastructure development. ''The credit for all these work goes to Delhi's people who gave the BJP seven Lok Sabha seats in 2019, and because of which Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, and I could become a minister,'' he said. Gadkari said that when he was the water resources minister, the Delhi government was allotted Rs 6,000 crore for setting up sewage treatment plants to clean the Yamuna river. ''I promise that if you give the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi to help the BJP and NDA to gain majority and make Modi ji Prime Minister again, we will work to ensure that Delhi becomes one of the top five cities of the world,'' he said. By paving the way for completion of multipurpose dam projects in four states, the BJP government at the Centre has ensured availability of water to fulfil the needs of Delhi till 2070, Gadkari further said.

During Covid, Kuldeep was incommunicado: BJPs Harsh Malhotra

NEW DELHI: In the Konli Assembly represented by the AAP candidate, roads are full of potholes, drinking water is acute, and he remains out of reach, says BJPs East Delhi candidate Harsh Malhotra in an interview with Ujwal Jalali. Excerpts. For the past 10 years, this constituency has remained with BJP. On what basis are you seeking votes from people? I am seeking votes on the basis of achievements. In east Delhi people used to face problems commuting in between Sarai Kale Khan to Ghazipur. Modi Ji laid the foundation stone and even inaugurated that Expressway stretch. Now it takes just 7 minutes. From Akshardham to Dehradun, the expressway is nearing completion. Rapid Metro is 70% completed. What will be your first work if voted to power? I want to take forward PMs initiative of Jahan Jhuggi Wahan Makaan. I will start this from Kalandar colony in Dilshad Colony and construct 4000 flats for slum dwellers. Any dream project? We are fortunate that the Yamuna passes through Delhi. Unfortunately, despite the Centre giving Delhi `3,000 crore, they (AAP) havent done anything. Cleaning the Yamuna River is my dream project. We will build a riverfront that would attract tourism. Gazipur landfill continues to stand tall. Your take? It is the collective responsibility of the city government and the Municipal Corporation. When I was Mayor, Rs 13,500 crore was pending with the Delhi government, and now it has increased to Rs 20,000 crore. I praise Gautam Gambhir ji, who utilised his MP-LAD funds and reduced the landfill heightfill by 17 metres. Six of the 7 sitting MPs have been replaced. Was it due to anti-incumbency? I didnt see any anti-incumbency. In Gautam Jis case, he decided to remain out of active politics due to cricket. Has Gambhirs work given you any advantage? Recently, I went to a cremation ground in Chilla village, and the people told me that Gambhir ji utilised Rs 35 lakh for the purpose. The AAP and Congress are fighting in an alliance. Do you think this has made the contest more difficult? No. If you go by the votes collectively polled in the last elections to both AAP and Congress, it is still less than what BJP received. And I call this an alliance of liars. Their alliance is only on paper. If they had had to make a real alliance, they would have also done it in Punjab. The AAP fielded a reserved candidate from a non-reserved seat. Will this give them an edge? The AAP candidate represents the Kondli assembly, where roads are full of potholes and an acute shortage of clean drinking water exists. Residents in his area say that during COVID-19, Kumar switched off his mobile phone and disappeared. The people will choose their candidate of choice only based on merit. Do you think the arrest of CM Arvind Kejriwal has generated sympathy wave? Three big AAP leaders are in jail for corruption. They sold one liquor bottle free with another and opened liquor stores in every locality. Which parent would want their children to go in that direction? This is the reason they are behind bars. They have done corruption.

In a few moments, the fierce flames forced the screaming devotees to run helter-skelter to save their lives. Some people were seen running with their children in their laps. A stampede-like situation led shopkeepers in the temple complex to immediately shutter shops. Located 16 km from Dwarahat city in Almora district, the ancient Dunagiri temple of Aadi Shakti Vaishno Mata saw a horde of devotees ready for Sunday morning darshan. Over 1,107 hectares of pristine forestland have been adversely impacted by these relentless blazes, government sources said. These fires have not only destroyed valuable forest resources but also obliterated rare species of flowers that bloom once every 12 years. Anup Sah, a member of the Uttarakhand Wildlife Board, told this newspaper that seeds of a rare species of a delicate flower, botanical name Aechmanthera gossypina (Blue Trumpet Bush), have been lost. In Nainital, several terraced fields have turned into ashes, said Sah. He described the forest fires as a disaster predominantly caused by human activity. The nesting habitats of birds, insects, frogs, toads, leeches, and rare vegetation have been decimated. In Thapli village on Saturday, Savitri Devi noticed a forest fire reaching her farm. She went to collect grass bundles kept there but got caught in the blaze, the District Disaster Management Center said. She was referred to AIIMS Rishikesh, where she died during treatment in the early hours of Sunday, it said. According to forest department officials, a case has been registered against four people -- Piyush Singh, Ayush Singh, Rahul Singh and Ankit -- under the Indian Forest Act for setting fire in Gangolihat forest range of Pithoragarh district. The daily bulletin issued by the forest department here said that in the last 24 hours, 24 incidents of forest fire were reported in the state, which affected 23.75 hectares of forest. Meanwhile, CM Dhami also asked all the district magistrates to give orders to completely ban burning of all types of fodder for a week with immediate effect. Besides this, urban bodies have also been asked to ban the burning of their solid waste in or near forests. Dhami held a review meeting with the officials on Saturday regarding the incidents of forest fires happening in the state He asked the officials to establish coordination among themselves and create a mechanism by which the forest fires could be controlled as soon as possible. While appealing to Uttarakhand residents for their cooperation, the chief minister said, Forest wealth is our heritage which we have to protect at all costs. Since November 1 last year, there have been 910 incidents of forest fire in the state, due to which about 1145 hectares of forest have been affected.

BJP Afflicted with Phobia Due to Rahul Gandhi's Popularity: Congress leader Nav Prabhat

Dehradun: Th e Congress Discipline Committee Chairman and former Cabinet Minister Nav Prabhat, on Sunday, criticized the BJP's criticism over Rahul Gandhi's candidature from the Rae Bareli seat, saying that the BJP has become afflicted with a phobia due to Rahul Gandhi's popularity. BJP has become afflicted with a phobia due to Rahul Gandhi's popularity. The Congress family was associated with the Raebareli seat in 1952 and Rahul Gandhi has chosen the same seat as Feroze Gandhi, I consider this to be the right step, Prabhat told the media. Commenting on KL Sharma's candidature, the former cabinet minister said, As far as Amethi is considered, Kishori Lal Sharma has been working in Amethi for the last 50 years. Congress has made the right decision by choosing someone who has been playing a major role for a long time. I am confident of KL Sharma's win. BJP is counting abrogation of Article 370 as its biggest achievement to the public, but is BJP contesting elections in Kashmir Valley where it removed Artice 370? Is BJP contesting elections in Manipur which they ignored..., Prabhat added. He further criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his silence on issues that are currently making headlines in the country. Prime Minister Modi is not giving any clarification on the Prajwal Revanna sexual assault case and the Covishield case. PM Modi is indulged in cheap politics. Rahul Gandhi currently represents Wayanad in the Lok Sabha while Smriti Irani is bidding for a fresh term from Amethi. Raebareli was held by Sonia Gandhi who became a member of Rajya Sabha. Rahul represented Amethi in the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2019. His father and former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, too, was an elected member of Amethi in the Lower House from 1981 till his death in 1991. The Congress, which is contesting 17 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh as part of the seat-sharing deal with the Samajwadi Party (SP), has announced candidates for all the seats barring Amethi and Raebareli. Rahul's defeat in Amethi, once considered a Congress 'pocket borough', at the hands of Smriti Irani in the 2019 polls was seen as a significant blow to the party's national prestige. Amethi and Rae Bareli are going to polls in the fifth phase on May 20. The counting of votes will be held on June 4. Uttarakhand Wildfires: Air Services Halted for Second Day Amidst Hazy Conditions

Uttarakhand Wildfires: Air Services Halted for Second Day Amidst Hazy Conditions Air services to Pithoragarh and Munsiyari towns of the border district remained suspended for the second day on Saturday due to poor visibility around the Naini-Saini airport caused by smoke rising from the burning forests. Visibility around the airport and its surroundings remained less than 1000-metre, which is required to be at least 5000 metres for air fliers to operate, officials said. ''Visibility in Saur valley where the airport is located has dropped drastically due to smoke being emitted by forest fires,'' SDM Ashish Kumar Mishra said. The smoke rising from the forests is so dense in both Pithoragarh and Munsiyari that even the mountain peaks are not visible, he said. ''Air passengers to Pithoragarh and Haldwani are disappointed due to cancellation of both the services. Efforts are on to douse the forest fires to clear the weather,'' Mishra said. The air service is operated by an aircraft of Fly Big company from Dehradun to Pithoragarh while the heli services are operated by Heritage aviation company from Haldwani to Pithoragarh and Munsiyari. Besides Saur valley, the forest fires are raging in Quirala valley of Champawat and the forests of Lohaghat, Jhoolaghat and Gaurihat. ''We had to take extra care in going towards Jhoolaghat from Gaurihat as the visibility on the 10-km-long road is so poor that no vehicle could be seen from beyond 10-metre distance due to smokes emitting from forest fires in surrounding jungles,'' said Vikram Singh Rawat, a tourist who had gone to Jhoolaghat. According to medical officers in community and primary health centres at various places in the district, an increased number of patients are coming to the hospitals complaining of difficulty in breathing and irritation in the eyes. ''These problems are caused by smoke coming from the raging forest fires,'' Jhoolaghat PHC in charge Harish Chandra Rawat said.

Rahul's Strategic Chess Move: Amethi to Rae Bareli Shift in Lok Sabha Election

Rahul's Strategic Chess Move: Amethi to Rae Bareli Shift in Lok Sabha Election Rahul Gandhi describes himself as the best chess player among Indian politicians, and his latest gambit appears to be his decision to contest from Rae Bareli instead of his home ground Amethi. Gandhi obviously hopes that the move will checkmate opponents but the BJP sees it as a cowardly retreat from the battleground. ''He is an experienced player of politics and chess. The party leadership takes its decisions after much discussion, and as part of a larger strategy. This single decision has befuddled the BJP, its supporters, and its sycophants,'' Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a post on the much-anticipated decision. ''The BJP's self-proclaimed Chanakya, who used to talk about 'paramparagat seat' is now not sure how to respond,'' he said. The chess reference by Ramesh comes days after the Congress put out a video of Gandhi talking about his interest in the board game and its similarities with politics. In the video, when Gandhi is asked who is the best chess player among Indian politicians, he said, ''Me''. Gandhi filed his papers from Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli constituency in the afternoon, barely an hour before nominations closed for the Lok Sabha seat on Friday. He was accompanied by Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as he filed his papers around 2 pm. Gandhi had made his poll debut from Amethi in 2004 and saw relative smooth sailing in the first 10 years with the UPA being in power, while the last 10 years have been challenging. He won the 2014 polls against the BJP's Smriti Irani by over a lakh votes but she had run a spirited campaign and made inroads into the Congress citadel of Amethi. She finally breached the fortress in 2019, beating the Gandhi family scion by over 55,000 votes. However, Gandhi's 'Plan B' seemed to have worked as he contested the polls from two constituencies and won from Kerala's Wayanad, ensuring that his stint in Parliament continued. Some of the earlier electoral gambles of Gandhi such as pitching the 2019 polls campaign of the Congress on the Rafale issue have not paid off but Gandhi has always stuck to his convictions and maintained his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including on the Adani issue. He has been at the receiving end of criticism from various quarters and often been dubbed a ''reluctant politician'' or ''part-time politician'', but he has remained unfazed by such criticism. At a press briefing in Ghaziabad a couple of weeks ago, Gandhi had taken a swipe at the media for dubbing him a ''non-serious'' politician. He had cited his involvement with the MGNREGA scheme, the Land Acquisition Bill, the Bhatta Parsaul movement, Niyamgiri Hills matter, and had said for the media all this was ''non-serious while talking about Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Virat Kohli was serious''. In 2004, Gandhi announced his entry into Indian politics, contesting his first election from Amethi, the same seat that was represented by his mother Sonia Gandhi (1999-2004) and his late father Rajiv Gandhi between 1981-91. Rahul Gandhi won by an overwhelming margin of almost three lakh votes. He again won in 2009 but his margin was reduced in 2014 and was defeated by Irani in 2019. He had been criticised for not spending enough time in the constituency, allowing the BJP to make inroads into the Congress fortress. Gandhi was appointed vice president of the Congress in 2013 and took over the reins of the party on December 16, 2017. He stepped down as its president in May 2019 after the drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls. Since then, he has taken out to yatras -- a cross country Kanyakumari to Kashmir march on foot and a hybrid Manipur to Mumbai yatra, initiatives which were hailed by Congress leaders for galvanising cadres and enthusing supporters. Gandhi had recently said it is now his life mission to ensure justice for the SCs, STs, OBCs and the deprived people. He has pitched the Congress campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha on five Nyays -- Yuva Nyay, Nari Nyay, Kisan Nyay, Shramik Nyay and Hissedari Nyay. Born on June 19, 1970 to Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi, he is the elder of the two siblings and spent his formative years in New Delhi, studying at St. Columba's School and then went on to study at the Doon School in Dehradun. His father Rajiv Gandhi then entered politics and became prime minister after the assassination of Rahul's grandmother and then prime minister Indira Gandhi. Due to constant security threats, Rahul and his sister Priyanka were home-schooled. A year after attending St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi, for his undergraduate studies, he moved to the US to attend Harvard University. Following the assassination of his father and the security concerns that surfaced, Rahul Gandhi shifted to Rollins College in Florida. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1994. Thereafter, he went on to pursue and complete his M.Phil. in Development Studies from the University of Cambridge (Trinity College) in 1995. Upon graduation, Rahul started his professional journey at the Monitor Group, a management consulting firm in London. He later returned to India and eventually joined politics. Gandhi is a certified scuba diver and is known for his fitness. He also holds a black belt in Aikido, a Japanese martial art.

Dhami criticizes Rahul and Akhilesh for lack of understanding of country after studying abroad

Dhami criticizes Rahul and Akhilesh for lack of understanding of country after studying abroad Uttarakhand Chief Minister and BJP leader Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday attacked INDIA bloc leaders Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, claiming that they have little understanding of the country as they have studied abroad. In an interview with PTI-Bhasha here, Dhami also alleged that the Congress wants give reservations to a ''particular community'' from the quota meant for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC). On Congress leader Gandhi and Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Yadav alleging ''misuse'' of central probe agencies such as the ED, the CBI and the Income Tax Department to target leaders of opposition parties, the BJP leader said, ''These agencies are of the Congress era.'' Dhami was in the Uttar Pradesh capital for the filing of nomination papers of Defence Minister Rajanth Singh who is contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Lucknow. Asked about the alleged sex scandal in Karnataka involving JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda's grandson and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, he said the law will take its course against anyone who violates it. Dhami also targeted the INDIA bloc, formed by opposition parties to take on the ruling BJP in the Lok Sabha polls, saying, ''This is an alliance of people promoting family causes, corruption and appeasement...'' This alliance of opposition parties is to safeguard their existence and that is why the country does not believe them, he said. To a question on Gandhi and Yadav alleging that the BJP is seeking more than 400 seats in the Lok Sabha to change the Constitution and end reservations, Dhami said, ''They have studied abroad. Hence, they have no proper understanding of the country.'' ''Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP are supporters of reservations for SC, ST and OBC. The two have studied abroad. They have little understanding of the country,'' he said. The Uttarakhand chief minister exuded confidence that the BJP will win all the five Lok Sabha seats in the state. ''We don't have to fight with anybody for five Lok Sabha seats in Uttarakhand. Our fight is with ourselves as to who wins with the maximum margin,'' Dhami said. On the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), he said it has become a legislation in Uttarakhand and ''we feel happy that the BJP has taken a vow in its 'sankalp patra (manifesto)' to implement it across the country''. The Uttarakhand assembly on February 7 passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill. The Bill got the president's assent in March, making Uttarakhand the first state in the country after Independence to take a decisive step towards implementing the common law on marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance for all citizens, irrespective of their religion. On the arrests of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader and former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, Dhami said that Prime Minister Modi has said ''na khaunga na khana doonga''. The law is taking its course, he said, referring to the BJP-led Centre's zero-tolerance towards corruption policy. The AAP and the JMM are also members of the INDIA bloc. On forest fires in Uttarakhand, Dhami said, ''We are moving towards controlling the fires''. These have been controlled to a great extent, he said and added that in some districts, ''we have controlled the fires''. Holidays of forest department personnel have been cancelled and responsibility fixed to control the fires, the chief minister said and added that the help of the army is also being taken. ''Such incidents happen every year. This time it is more. We have taken action... taking strict action by filing cases (against the guilty). The environment should be preserved,'' Dhami said while responding to a question. On Sunday, forest officials in Uttarakhand capital Dehradun said efforts have been intensified to extinguish the raging forest fires in the state, especially in the worst-affected areas of Nainital, Haldwani and Ramnagar forest divisions. The forest fires are gradually being controlled with flames already doused in many areas. The fires in Marora and Khanana civil areas in the Maniknath range of the Narendranagar forest division have been completely extinguished, the officials had said.

Uttarakhand: Forest fires partially put out, choppers withdrawn

DEHRADUN: The Uttarakhand forest department in coordination with various departments on Sunday managed to partially control the intense fire engulfing the forests of the Nanda range near Nainital to a significant extent. The forest department has resorted to employing traditional fire-fighting techniques to combat the blaze, officials said. Considering the limited efficacy of the Bambi bucket water dispersal technique employed by the Air Forces MI-17 chopper, the administration opted to resort to manual fire control measures. Additionally, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have been deployed by the state government to combat the wildfires at multiple locations. A contingent of 41 NDRF personnel was swiftly dispatched to Nainital on Sunday to provide support to the forest officials in containing the wildfires in the region, sub-divisional magistrate Pramod Kumar told this newspaper. Nishant Verma, additional principal chief conservator of forests and state nodal officer for forest fire, said, The forest fire situation in the state is largely under control, and there is no need to panic. Miscreants involved in forest fire incidents are being dealt with strictly. So far, 29 people have been booked in 23 cases, officials said. On Sunday, the primary objective was to control the fire in the Mahesh Khan beat located in Bhouwali area, divisional forest officer Chandrashekar Joshi told this newspaper. Significant efforts were directed towards clearing the highly flammable pirul ( pine needles) that are a key contributor to rapid spread of the fire. The strategy employed involves isolating the fire-affected area to effectively contain and control the flames, he said. Uttrakhand Forest Minister Subodh Uniyal said, The state government will provide rewards ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 1 lakh to forest fire management committees for successfully extinguishing wildfires. Additionally, helicopters will be utilised in special circumstances to aid in firefighting. Minister Uniyal emphasised the crucial role of public participation in combating forest fires, highlighting the formation of 541 forest fire management committees led by village heads. These committees have been incentivised with Rs 30,000 each for the season to enhance their effectiveness in fire prevention and control.

Arvinder Singh Lovely Resigns as Delhi Congress President Over AAP Alliance Disagreement

New Delhi: Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh Lovely has resigned from his post, party officials announced on Sunday. In his resignation letter, Lovely cited the party's decision to ally with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi as the reason for his resignation. He expressed his disagreement with the alliance, stating, The Delhi Congress Unit was against an alliance with a party which was formed on the sole basis of leveling false, fabricated, and malafide corruption charges against the Congress Party. Lovely, who was appointed to the post in August 2023, highlighted several issues in his letter to Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge. He mentioned that the unanimous decisions taken by senior Delhi Congress leaders were unilaterally vetoed by the AICC General Secretary (Delhi In-charge).He further stated, Since my appointment as DPCC President, the AICC General Secretary (Delhi In-charge) has not allowed me to make any senior appointments in the DPCC. My request for the appointment of a veteran leader as Media head of DPCC was blatantly rejected. To date, the AICC General Secretary (Delhi In-charge) has not allowed the DPCC to appoint all Block presidents in the city. Resultantly more than 150 blocks in Delhi do not presently have a Block President. Lovely also criticized the decision to ally with the AAP despite corruption allegations made against them. He mentioned, Despite that, the Party decided to ally with the AAP in Delhi. He added that he had publicly supported the decision and ensured that the entire state unit followed the high command's orders. He also pointed out that as a result of the alliance, the Delhi Congress was allotted three parliamentary seats to contest in the current general elections. Lovely expressed his disapproval of comments made by the North-East Delhi candidate, Kanhaiya Kumar, praising the Delhi Chief Minister and endorsing the works done by AAP in various sectors. In conclusion, Lovely stated, Since I cannot protect the interests of the Party Workers, I see no reason to continue in the said post. ED Summons AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan Again in Money Laundering Case

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan again next week in connection with a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in the Delhi Waqf Board during his chairmanship, official sources reported on Saturday. Khan has been asked to appear on April 29 to continue the recording of his statement under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The 50-year-old Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator from the Okhla assembly seat was questioned by the central agency for about 13 hours last week.In a related development, a Delhi court on Saturday granted bail to Khan in this money laundering case for allegedly evading its earlier summons. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Divya Malhotra granted bail to Khan on a personal bond of Rs 15,000 and one surety of the like amount after he appeared before the court.AAP leader and Delhi Cabinet Minister Atishi had earlier stated that the Enforcement Directorate case against Khan was fake and reiterated the party's support for its legislator.Khan's first deposition on April 18 came after the Supreme Court refused to entertain his anticipatory bail application in this case, directing him to join the investigation. Speaking to reporters before entering the Enforcement Directorate office on that day, Khan claimed that he followed the rules when he was the chairman of the Waqf Board and did everything after taking legal opinion and in accordance with the new Act for the board that came into effect in 2013.The money laundering case against Khan and his alleged associates stems from a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) FIR and three complaints filed by the Delhi Police. The Enforcement Directorate, which had conducted raids on his premises, alleged that Khan acquired huge proceeds of crime in cash through the illegal recruitment of staff in the Delhi Waqf Board and invested those to purchase immovable assets in the name of his associates. The agency claimed that illegal recruitment of staff took place in the Waqf Board and illegal personal gains were made by unfairly leasing the Waqf Board properties during Khan's chairmanship (2018-2022). DK Shivakumar Slams Centre for Inadequate Relief Funds

Bangalore: Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, expressed disappointment over the fact that the Supreme Court had to intervene to ensure the release of drought relief funds from the Centre to the state. Following the Supreme Court's intervention, the Union Finance Ministry agreed to release Rs 3,498.82 crore as drought relief funds to Karnataka. However, Shivakumar criticized the amount, labeling it as inadequate. He stated that the state government had initially demanded Rs 18,000 crore as relief funds but was only sanctioned Rs 3,454 crore. In response, he announced plans for a protest near the Gandhi statue of the Vidhana Soudha on April 28, denouncing what he called injustice. Shivakumar highlighted the severity of the drought situation in Karnataka, stating that 223 taluks were currently affected. He pointed out that despite resolving the crisis in Bengaluru, farmers had suffered significant losses, estimating a total loss of Rs 35,161 crore due to the drought. Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had tweeted, This is perhaps the first time in the history of India that a state was driven to the Supreme Court to get its rights enforced. He also criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah, stating that he finally woke up when the Supreme Court rang the bell. DK Shivakumar further accused the Centre of failing to release an additional Rs 5,000 crore for water projects in the state, despite provisions being made for it in the Union Budget. He also criticized JD(S) leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy for not raising the Mekedatu issue before his party formed an alliance with the BJP for the Lok Sabha elections, despite making a promise to do so. Regarding the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in the state, the Deputy Chief Minister expressed satisfaction with the polling process, despite a few incidents of minor scuffles and boycotts. He expressed confidence that Karnataka would achieve double-digit seats in the Lok Sabha, but refrained from commenting on the significance of the voter turnout.
