Centre is concerned about back-to-back terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir

Paramilitary soldiers patrol a market in Srinagar, in Jammu Kashmir, Tuesday, Nov 16, 2021. (AP Photo/Mukhtar Khan) Paramilitary soldiers patrol a market in Srinagar, in Jammu Kashmir, Tuesday, Nov 16, 2021. (AP Photo/Mukhtar Khan) Srinagar: The Centre is reported to be concerned about Saturday nights back-to-back terror attacks which left a BJP worker dead and a tourist couple from Jaipur injured in southern Shopian and Anantnag districts and has urged the Jammu and Kashmir administration to take steps to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensue no such incidents reoccur. The bloody incidents took place a day after Home Minister Amit Shahs unexpected visit to Srinagar during which he discussed various important issues including the security preparedness and logistics for the upcoming annual Amarnath yatra with the local authorities. Both Anantnag and Shopian are part of the Anantnag-Rajouri-Poonch Lok Sabha constituency where polling is scheduled to be held in the sixth phase of the seven-season elections on May 25. The voting was to take place on May 7, but the Election Commission of India deferred it till May 25 owing to connectivity issues set off by inclement weather. The attacks on BJP worker and former Sarpanch Aejaz Ahmed Sheikh and Muslim couple from Rajasthan -Tabrez Khan and his wife Farha in Shopians Hurpur and Anantnags Yannar area, respectively came in the thick of the campaigning in the Anantnag-Rajouri-Poonch constituency. The BJP called Mr. Sheikh as a brave soldier of the party and held a protest against his killing in Srinagar on Sunday. In one of the two videos which have gone viral, Mr. Sheikh can be seen telling a reporter during Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit to Srinagar on March 7 that he was a sworn stone-pelter but he (PM) and his governments actions and policies vis--vis J&K have completely transformed his life and he now considers himself a proud Indian. In the second video captured only a couple of days before his killing, Mr. Sheikh again showers compliments and praise on the Prime Minister and calls him messiah of the people of Kashmir. Mr. Tabrez and his wife are on a visit to Kashmir in a group of about fifty tourists. After visiting the Valleys one of the premier resorts- Pahalgam, the couple was having dinner at an eatery at Yannar when targeted by two bike-borne gunmen, the police sources said, adding that the couple was quickly evacuated to a nearby hospital. While Ms. Farha is stable, the condition of her husband is stated to be critical. J&K particularly the Kashmir Valley has witnessed a considerable growth in tourist footfall in the past couple of years which is being projected by the government as a sign of the return of normalcy to the scenic region which, it says, had remained gripped in violence and terrorism prior to the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. A senior J&K government official who spoke on condition of anonymity told this newspaper that the Centre is worried that the attack on the Jaipur couple can send a deleterious message outside J&K and can also leave an adverse impact on the local tourism industry. Acknowledging that the targeting of tourists can harm Kashmirs tourism, former chief minister Farooq Abdullah told reporters, Tourists were also attacked in Pahalgam. This is a tragedyit is affecting our tourism industry. The BJP has blamed Pakistan for these incidents. Senior BJP leader and former deputy chief minister of the erstwhile J&K state Kavinder Gupta said, There was a record tourist footfall in Kashmir last year, with the number of visitors estimated at 17 million. At a time when tourism is looking up and local businesses and livelihoods are booming, the attack was aimed at bringing back the dark days of terror in the region. I strongly suspect Pakistan to be behind this attack. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti who is seeking election to Lok Sabha from Anantnag-Rajouri-Poonch said that the timing of these attacks given the fact that election was delayed in the constituency without any reason is a cause of concern, especially keeping in mind normalcy claims touted by the Government of India. He daughter Iltija Mufti who cancelled the road shows she had planned to hold in Shopian on Sunday over security concerns wrote on microblogging site X, but how strange that there has been a sudden spurt in attacks across South Kashmir where GOI claimed it had removed all traces of militancy suddenly in the run up to elections. Begs the question - Why was polling in South Kashmir delayed? Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, former minister and National Conference candidate for the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat, while condemning the killing of the BJP worker in Shopian said that no one deserves to be killed for his or her political ideology. These acts should have no place in our society. I would also want to ask a question which genuinely concerns me. What was the purpose of the Home Ministers visit a few days ago? The Home Ministers visit should ensure a better security situation. Why has the situation worsened after his visit? Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami, CPIMs key face in J&K, said, Violence is not a solution, but rather perpetuates suffering and instability. J&Ks Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha assured that the security forces have been given a free hand to bring the perpetrators to justice. He said, J&K police, the Army and other security forces will hunt down the terrorists and those aiding and abetting them.

J-K: BJP leader alleges Pak hand in terror attack on tourist couple

J-K: BJP leader alleges Pak hand in terror attack on tourist couple A day after a former panchayat official was shot dead by terrorists in South Kashmir's Shopian and a tourist couple from Rajasthan injured in a separate terror strike in Anantnag, former deputy chief minister of the erstwhile state, Kavinder Gupta, said on Sunday said the attack was aimed at disturbing and hurting tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking to ANI on Sunday, the senior BJP leader said, There was a record tourist footfall in Kashmir last year, with the number of visitors estimated at 1,70,00,000. Hence, at a time when tourism is looking up and local businesses and livelihoods are booming, the attack was aimed at bringing back the dark days of terror in the region. It was intended to hurt the tourism prospects at a time when there is prosperity all around in Kashmir. I strongly suspect Pakistan to be behind this attack. However, the nefarious designs of people, who carry out terror hits in exchange for money and at the behest of their handlers (across the border) wouldn't succeed. Their bid to bring back the reign of terror in the Valley will never succeed. It should be kept in mind in this context that these people (terrorists) no longer enjoy local support as they used to earlier, the former deputy CM told ANI. A tourist couple from the Rajasthan capital, Jaipur, were injured in a terror attack in the Yannar area of South Kashmir's Anantnag district on Saturday night. Terrorists fired upon and injured a woman, Farha, a resident of Jaipur, and her spouse, Tabrez, at Yannar in Anantnag. The injured were evacuated and rushed to a nearby hospital, a police officer said. The condition of the injured tourists was said to be stable. In a separate attack barely minutes apart in Shopian, terrorists shot dead a former Sarpanch from the BJP. Condemning the killing of their party leader, identified as Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh, at Heerpora in Shopian, the BJP on Saturday pledged support and solidarity with the kin of the deceased. We strongly condemn the killing of ex-Sarpanch Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh in Heerpora, Shopian, by terrorists today (Saturday), Sajid Yousuf Shah, the in-charge of the BJP's media cell in Jammu and Kashmir, posted from his X handle. He was a brave soldier of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Jammu & Kashmir. The BJP firmly stands with the family of Aijaz Ahmad, who lost his life in this terror attack, he added. According to police, unidentified gunmen pumped lead into Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh at Heerpora in the Shopian district late on Saturday late evening. He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries on arrival. BJP leader and ex-Sarpanch Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh succumbed to his injuries after being fired upon by terrorists in Heerpora in South Kashmir's Shopian, IGP Kashmir said. (ANI)

About House of Suntory Since 1923, Suntory has been renowned as the pioneer of Japanese Whisky for its House of Master Blenders and for their Art of Blending. Founder Shinjiro Torii built Japans first malt whisky distillery in Yamazaki, and the Suntory legacy continued with Toriis son and Suntorys second Master Blender, Keizo Saji, who continued to establish distilleries including the Hakushu distillery. As the generations of Suntorys master blenders carry on, Suntory Whisky remains committed to heritage and innovation. The House of Suntory portfolio also offers Roku Japanese Gin and Haku Japanese Vodka. Created from Japanese ingredients by the master artisans at the House of Suntory, Roku Gin and Haku Vodka represent the nature and spirit of Japan. This year, the House of Suntory celebrates one hundred years of whisky innovationa major milestone not only for the brands history, but for Japanese spirits culture as a whole. To mark this anniversary, the House of Suntory will be rolling out its centennial campaign throughout 2023. About Toki Suntory Whisky Toki, meaning time, is a concept that is deeply-woven into the Japanese way of life - a concept rich in meaning the world over, yet especially in Japan, where regard for convention and re-evaluation starts an amazing inventive vitality. The House of Suntorys fourth Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo was inspired to create a blend that is both groundbreaking and timeless, leading him to take a fresh approach with Toki. By bringing the grain component of the blend from the Chita distillery, where the heavy-type grain spirit is distilled only twice on column stills, and is vanilla-rich with a sweet undertone in its unblended state. Shinji-san sourced the malt component from the Hakushu distillery, which produces light, fruity malt similar to many Speyside distilleries. The unique pairing of Hakushu American White Oak Cask malt spirit with Chita heavy-type grain spirit overturns the traditional hierarchy between malt and grain. These seemingly dissimilar but deeply accordant spirits, together with select Yamazaki malts for additional depth and complexity give rise to the exquisite, silky taste, distinctive character and bold innovation of the blended Toki Suntory Whisky. About Shingo Gokan Shingo Gokan is a bar industry legend. Confusion: Hyundai Verna 1.5 turbo petrol DCT or Creta 1.5 diesel AT

BHPian padukulkarni9 recently shared this with other enthusiasts. Hello, Please help me choose between:Verna 1.5 Turbo Petrol DCT SX(O) - ~21 Lakh on road, andCreta 1.5 Diesel AT SX(0) - ~24 Lakh on road (Stretched end of the budget)Preferences:Must haves:Safety: Verna has a 5-star GNCAP safety rating with an unstable body shell. Expecting facelifted Creta to score better with the upgrades in facelift body structure.Performance: Both car variants mentioned offer sufficient performance. (I like torquey cars so kept out 1.5 NA Petrol CVT variants.)Boot space: My family loves to carry a lot of luggage on trips. The bigger the better. The Verna trumps here.Resale value: Creta is a popular crossover, and the country moving towards high-ground clearance crossovers, expecting the Creta to fetch more money in resale. However, not sure if that justifies the higher initial price.Nice to have:Ventilated seats: They are a boon in hot Indian weather.Ground clearance: This might be a must-have for many but coming from a sedan right now, I have made up my mind that a sedan might scrape once in a while and it would not be worrisome.Panoramic sunroof: A small sunroof is unusable most of the time due to pollution, and dust. We are hoping that we can take the wiser off from the panoramic sunroof at least a few times when the weather is good.Points leading to the confusion:ReliabilityThis is the most crucial one. With a sea of complaints about Turbo DCT overheating in bumper-to-bumper traffic, I am a bit skeptical about choosing Verna Turbo DCT. Also, I see a few incidences of BS VI diesels choking DPF filters once in a while in heavy traffic. Don't see it as common as heating issues in DCT. Does spending extra for diesel AT on Creta make sense? Hyundai also provides a 7-year extended warranty but not sure if they do anything in case of heating issues.PriceCreta is around 3 lakh expensive with only a few additions like a Panoramic sunroof, blind view monitor camera, 360-degree camera, and slightly premium interiors (better-arranged screens), etc. If I choose the Creta, I would be stretching my budget though.Fuel economyAlthough claimed fuel efficiency figures are better for Turbo DCT, turbo petrol engines are known to be sensitive to driving styles. With my heavy right foot or fondness for quick acceleration, I fear it to be in single digits in the city and below 15 on the highway. Another option: Should I consider the Mahindra XUV700 AX5 Diesel AT at the Creta price with 4 airbags, no ADAS, and non-ventilated fabric seats? Here's what BHPian ssoni.1411 had to say about the matter:It all boils down to which engine is suitable for your driving needs. The Diesel engine has DPF hence if your highway running is high, I would suggest you to buy the Creta. It has an incredible street presence, smart styling and the Diesel engine is an excellent mile muncher. If your running is low, you can go with either of the Creta or the Verna DCT. The DCT issues have been minimized and Hyundai even offers you a 7-year extended warranty program. I have a Venue DCT in the family and we haven't encountered any heating issues as of yet. Here's what BHPian Aniket Verma had to say about the matter:Any specific reasons for not considering the Creta N8/N10 Turbo DCT? N8 comes under Rs 22 lacs OTR (as you are ready to skip ADAS & 360-degree camera). Some important points for your consideration:Extended Warranty: 7 years extended warranty is available only for Petrol models and not for Diesel models.DCT Transmission: Though dry DCT in Korean twins have been relatively reliable, if you are going ahead with DCT, 7 years warranty is a must-have.360 Degree: Camera quality of Creta is best for a car under Rs. 30 lacs. I have found this to be the most useful feature.High Sitting positions: I have also moved from a Sedan to CSUV and am really enjoying the sitting position that Creta offers.N-line specific features: N Line comes with stiffer suspensions (more suited to highway / aggressive driving) and a relatively better steering wheel.N8 vs N10 : N10 comes with ADAS, 360-degree cameras and Ventilated seats. Whereas N8 offers an inbuilt Dashcam and wireless Android Auto / Apple CarplayI have just completed a Delhi-Jaipur-Delhi journey, and driving with a higher sitting position, ADAS (adoptive Cruise control and Lane Assist) & Ventilated seats made this journey more comfortable in 42 degrees, compared to my old Sedan.Check out BHPian comments for more insights and information.

Jaipur: Wanted criminal opens fire while trying to flee police custody, nabbed after being shot in leg

Jaipur: Wanted criminal opens fire while trying to flee police custody, nabbed after being shot in leg A history-sheeter carrying a bounty of Rs 1 lakh on his head was shot in the leg after he attempted to flee police custody while being taken to Jaipur after being arrested, police said on Thursday. According to the police, the wanted history-sheeter, identified as Rakesh Yadav, was arrested from Assam's Dibrugarh on May 13 and was brought thereafter to Delhi. However, while being taken to Jaipur he requested the police to stop the vehicle on the pretext of using a public toilet. But he snatched a service pistol from a sub-inspector and opened fire on the uniformed personnel escorting him. In retaliatory action, the police shot him in the leg, disabling him, sources said. Rashi Doody, DCP (North), said Rakesh was wanted in connection with 28 criminal cases including murder, extortion, murderous assault and those registered under the Arms Act at different police stations in the city. Last year, Rakesh and his gang opened fire while trying to extort Rs 1 crore from a jeweller residing in an apartment in the Vidyadhar Nagar area of Jaipur, the DCP (North) said, adding that the jeweller's son sustained a bullet injury in the incident. After going through the CCTV footage, the police identified Rakesh and his fellow gang members. Three of the goons were arrested shortly after being identified in the CCTV footage, the DCP (North) informed. However, Rakesh remained absconding and threatened the jeweller again over the phone. A Crime Special Team of Jaipur Police, which was on the lookout for the wanted criminal and carried out raids across states for him, received information that Rakesh was lying low in Assam. A team was rushed to Assam and he was arrested. The police, thereafter, brought Rakesh to Delhi where a team from Vidyadharnagar police station was waiting for the handover of custody. On Wednesday night, amid tight security, Rakesh was brought to Jaipur when, around 12.28 am, the wanted criminal got the police vehicle to pull over near Daulatpura in Jaipur on the pretext of using a public toilet. As soon as the police vehicle stopped, the accused snatched the pistol of a sub-inspector and opened fire on the personnel escorting him in an attempt to make an escape. However, in retaliation, police shot him down in the leg and nabbed him. The injured history-sheeter was shifted to the SMS hospital where he continues to receive treatment, the DCP (North) said.
