Centre withholding funds for West Bengal for not displaying PM's face on ration shops: Congress

Centre withholding funds for West Bengal for not displaying PM's face on ration shops: Congress The Congress alleged on Sunday that the Centre has been withholding the National Food Security Act (NFSA) funds for West Bengal for the state not displaying Narendra Modi's face on ration shops and asked the prime minister whether he prioritises his public relations over people's daily food. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh posed questions to Modi ahead of his Lok Sabha poll rallies in West Bengal. ''Does the PM have any solutions to the Kurmi community's demands? Why has the West Bengal governor failed to resign despite multiple molestation charges? Is the outgoing PM really withholding Rs 7,000 crore of ration funds so that his face is plastered on ration shops?'' Ramesh asked in a post on X. Elaborating on what he said were ''jumla (rhetoric) details'', Ramesh alleged that the Modi government has shamelessly used the Kurmis for vote-bank politics, without addressing any of their demands. ''The community has long demanded ST status but the Modi Sarkar continues to drag its heels on the matter, despite the state government submitting the Cultural Research Institute report to the Centre in 2017,'' he said. The upper-caste leaders in the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have been especially dismissive of the Kurmis' demand, Ramesh claimed. ''The BJP has also repeatedly refused to recognise the Kurmis' cultural identity, ignoring their demands to recognise their unique religious practices known as sari and sarana. Why has the BJP deceived the Kurmis and strung them along for so many years?'' he asked. Ramesh said the Congress ''Nyay Patra'' (poll manifesto) guarantees a nationwide caste census to ensure that every backward community in India has access to the opportunities they deserve. ''Will the outgoing PM ever stop paying lip-service to the Kurmi community's cause and meaningfully commit himself to a caste census? Will he recognise the Kurmi community's religious practices?'' he asked. Ramesh further said a few weeks after West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose was accused of molesting a Raj Bhavan staff, another woman has alleged that the governor sexually abused her in a Delhi hotel in January last year. ''This is the latest in a worrying trend of cases where political leaders affiliated to the BJP seem to think that they can violate women's bodies with impunity. It has become clear that in 'Modi ka Parivar', Nari Shakti is just a slogan that is projected while the Parivar shelters perpetrators of sexual violence, be it Prajwal Revanna or Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh or the West Bengal governor,'' Ramesh said. Will women ever be safe in ''Modi's India'', he asked. ''Will the outgoing PM's hunger for power always be more important than the safety of India's daughters?'' the Congress leader asked. He further alleged that in an ''incredibly petty move'', the BJP-led Centre has been withholding the NFSA funds for West Bengal for not displaying Modi's face on ration shops. ''In an attempt to coerce the state government into displaying signboards and flexes featuring the PM's photos, the Centre has withheld Rs 7,000 crore of paddy procurement funds. This could seriously hinder the state's paddy procurement throughout this financial year,'' Ramesh said. Last year, National Health Mission funds were withheld when the state government refused to paint health and wellness centres saffron, he claimed. ''Why has the outgoing PM so callously neglected the health and wellbeing of the people of West Bengal? Does he really prioritise his PR over people's daily food and medicines?'' Ramesh asked and said Modi should break his ''silence'' on these issues. Earlier, Ramesh claimed that the Centre's Forest Conservation (Amendment) Act ''undid'' the progress of the historic Forest Rights Act of 2006 and accused the BJP of diluting tribal rights. He posed questions to Modi ahead of his rally in Jharkhand's Jamshedpur. ''Why do the people of Jamshedpur still suffer from poor connectivity? Why is it that the 2As and their tempo-loads of black money roam free, while Jharkhand's Adivasi CM was put in jail? Why is the Adityapur Industrial Area still waiting for environmental clearance? Why has the PM denied Adivasis their religious identity and refused to recognise the Sarna code?'' Ramesh asked. He said despite being an industrial hub, Jamshedpur has poor transport connectivity. The number of trains running to key cities, such as Bhagalpur, Bengaluru and Delhi, is inadequate, he said. The city had a functional airport until 2016 but despite being inducted into the UDAN scheme in 2018, plans for a new airport have failed to materialise, Ramesh said. In January 2019, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Jharkhand government and the Airports Authority of India for the construction of the Dhalbhumgarh airport by December 2022, he said. ''This would have been a massive boost to the industrial sector, from major players like Tata to the MSME sector in Adityapur. When the December 2022 deadline came and went, BJP's own MPs were compelled to raise the issue in Parliament. On February 27, 2023, the Union Civil Aviation Minister responded and confirmed that the project had been abandoned,'' Ramesh said. Now, after much hassle, it seems that the environmental permission for the project has been granted, he added. Why did the Modi government neglect such essential infrastructure in Jharkhand, the Congress leader asked.

IPL 2024: 'We Should Be Really Proud Of This Journey We Are Having', Says RCB Wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik

After Royal Challengers Bengaluru: After Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) sealed the final playoff berth despite a dismal start of their IPL 2024 campaign, wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik reflected upon the Faf du Plessis-led side's inspirational turnaround in the league and said, people will remember this team for decades. After reeling at the bottom of the table in the first half of the tournament, RCB made a sensational comeback as they won their last six matches to finish their league stage campaign in the final-four with 14 points. In their first eight games, they only won a single game against Punjab Kings. Speaking in the RCB dressing room after the win, Karthik said the players should be proud of them for putting up a competitive show in the latter stage of the cash-rich league. We should be really proud of this journey we are having. People will always remember certain journeys. The way we have come back after eight games, we needed to win six, people will remember this team, Karthik told the RCB dressing room. Every year in this tournament, when you hit the seven-game mark, there will be one or two teams which would have probably won one or two and they will look to us and say, RCB did it. That was special. We are going to try and repeat what RCB did. And that is what we all play cricket for, sport for, where people follow us and believe us that they can do something special. It is hard. It is not going to be easy, I can tell any team that. What we have achieved today is very, very special. We should be really proud of ourselves, winning six out of six, he added. Heading onto the Eliminator in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, Karthik feels RCB have allowed themselves to achieve something so extraordinary that their feats will remain on peoples minds for years. When we get on that flight to Ahmedabad, we have a job to do. We have it within our grasp to do something that people will remember us for many decades. It will be a journey where people will say, wow, that RCB team was special. We are on that journey. We can do something really special if we put our minds to it. Nothing different. Just the same thing, over and over and over again. We will be the team that other teams look at, he said. What made RCBs passage to the playoffs even more special was that it came against the defending champions Chennai, with whom RCB have had a long-standing rivalry. Adding to the challenge was the fact that RCBs batting build-up was interrupted by a rain break, and they had to contend with the turning ball in changed conditions upon resumption. We have to understand the gravity of this game. This has been one of the marquee games for many, many years. It is fair to say they have found a way sometimes to get ahead of us. Coming into this game there was a sense of quiet confidence about us, playing the defending champions, and the way we played we should be really proud of ourselves, right up to the last ball, Karthik said. Hailing RCB as the best fielding unit, Karthik praised the catching heroics of Faf du Plessis and Swapnil Singh. We can proudly say we are the best fielding team in this tournament without a doubt. That catch, Faf, was special. Swapnils catch as well, when it mattered the most, that was serious. And my keeping, that was outstanding! Most importantly as a team we did phenomenally well, staying there in the game, Karthik said, while also praising Yash Dayal on his excellent last over for closing out the game. Karthik further said another team could have settled for a total of 150 considering the changed conditions after the rain, but RCB had overcome them and put on a show for their 12th Man Army. What makes today really special according to me is that a lot of things went against what you would have ideally wanted. For a start, Faf, with the toss. But then we showed why we are so special as a team in this journey. Even though it turned, we had a rain break, we had to go, start again, just the way Virat and Faf played the next three overs made it feel like 140-150 could be a decent total. Most teams would have thought about that and we would have thought about that for a second as well. But after that, to go out there, play the way we did against all odds, taking the game on, and that is something our support staff has been constantly harping on showing that yet again in Bangalore, we all know how proud our franchisee is and how our fans are and we gave them a treat to watch, he concluded.

Tripura: Husband kills wife over monetary dispute In a tragic and shocking incident, Taur Ali, a resident of Prakash Latiapura Village Panchayat in the Unakoti district of Tripura, brutally murdered his wife, Nichhafa Begam, on Saturday. According to the reports, on the night of May 18, around 1 am, a violent altercation erupted between the couple when Nichhafa refused to comply with Taur Ali's monetary demands. In a fit of rage, Taur Ali attacked her with a sharp blade, delivering five vicious blows to her head and neck. Nichhafa Begam succumbed to her injuries on the spot. Reportedly, the accused, Taur Ali, immediately fled from the spot after committing the crime. The police officials from the Irani Police Station arrived at the spot on Sunday morning and transported Nichhafa Begam's body to the Unakoti District Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Also, the police have launched an intensive manhunt to apprehend Taur Ali, who has fled from the spot and has detained a suspect for questioning. While speaking to ANI, an OC (officer in charge) of the Irani Police Station, Jatindra Das, said, We received reports of Nichhafa Begam's murder. The preliminary investigation indicates she was killed by her husband, Taur Ali, over a monetary dispute. We are actively searching for the accused and are committed to bringing him to justice. As per police officials, Nichhafa Begam had been subjected to continuous abuse by her husband, Taur Ali, who had been demanding money from her father's house for a long time. Despite being severely ill and having recently undergone an operation outside the state, Nichhafa was forced to return home by her husband after she sought refuge at her father's house to escape the abuse. According to Nichhafa's younger brother, Taur Ali had been pressuring Nichhafa to fetch money to cover her medical expenses, despite his gambling addiction, which her family vehemently opposed. After being forcibly brought back home by Taur Ali, Nichhafa endured relentless torture. The tragic incident has left their three sons devastated, especially the two younger children at home, while the eldest is away in Bengaluru seeking employment. The local community is demanding swift and severe punishment for Taur Ali, condemning his actions as inhumane and cruel. The demand for Taur Ali's arrest and exemplary punishment grows louder, reflecting the collective grief and anger of the local residents. (ANI)

IPL 2024: I'd Be Surprised If Dhoni Isn't Part Of CSK In An Official Capacity, Says Hayden

Star Sports Cricket Live: Amidst speculation over M.S. Dhoni's retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), former Australian opener Matthew Hayden shared his thoughts on the future of the ex-Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper. Hayden said he would be surprised if Dhoni does not remain part of the CSK family, either as a mentor or in another official capacity. The 42-year-old wicketkeeper, who has led the Men in Yellow to five IPL titles, is believed to have played his final game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Saturday. Last year, he promised to return for one more season to show his appreciation for the fans' support. However, after CSK's title hopes were shattered by a 27-run loss to RCB, fans and experts are wondering whether he would announce his retirement or continue for another year. I think this is it. I do believe that this will be the last time that Dhoni will play. Certainly, won't be the last time that we see Dhoni. I'd be very surprised if he doesn't mentor or be a part of the family of CSK in an official capacity, said Hayden on Star Sports Cricket Live. CSK have been handling Dhoni's workload after his knee surgery. He only encounters a few deliveries when he comes out to bat. Batting quite lower in the order, the former skipper has faced 73 balls in the season and smashed 14 boundaries and 13 maximums at a strike rate of 220.54. I suppose the thing is when you come to the end of your career, whether it is the last part of his career or not, what you don't want to see is diminishing returns as an athlete. Firstly, as a leader, he is The Thala of the Chennai Super Kings. This is telling me that nothing here is about becoming anything else other than first place. He's desperately using his brains, all of that cricket knowledge. And of course, the power is there and that's always been MS Dhoni. He's always hit balls at this stage of an innings. At the front, you can understand how players can hit it. But at the back, it's really hard to hit balls, Hayden added. Meanwhile, former India cricketer and ex-CSK batter Ambati Rayudu believes that Dhoni might be playing in the next IPL season as well. I don't think this is his last game. I just don't see him wanting to end on this note. He looked a little frustrated, even when he got out. Thats very unlike M.S. Dhoni, he just wanted to qualify and finish on a high. But you never know with MS Dhoni, he might come back next year. And with the Impact Player role as well, it allows him to be able to come in those last few overs and truly make that impact. BCCI better not remove the Impact Player rule because we still want to see Dhoni play. So, it's up to BCCI now. Do we want to see Dhoni play or not, he said.

Rayudu doesn't feel Dhoni has played his last match, puts ball in BCCI's court

New Delhi: Former India batter Ambati Rayudu doesn't feel MS Dhoni has played his last match in the IPL and wants the BCCI to continue with the contentious impact player rule as it could help the long-serving legend to keep going in top-flight cricket.Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings bowed out of this edition of the Indian Premier League following a 27-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a much-anticipated southern derby in Bengaluru on Saturday. The five-time defending champions needed 17 in the final over to qualify for the playoffs on better net run rate, but bowler Yash Dayal, after being hit for monstrous six by Dhoni, held his nerves to help RCB prevail. Later, speaking on Star Sports Cricket Live, Rayudu said, I don't think this is his last game. I just don't see him wanting to end on this note. Even as the RCB players broke into wild celebrations, Dhoni shook hands with the opposition's reserves and support staff before quietly disappearing into the dressing room. Rayudu said, He looked a little frustrated, even when he got out. That's very unlike MS Dhoni, he just wanted to qualify and finish on a high. But you never know with MS Dhoni, he might come back next year. Rayudu, who played under Dhoni at CSK, brought the BCCI into the picture. ... With the impact player role as well, it gives him the opportunity to be able to come in those last few overs and truly make that impact. BCCI better not remove the impact player role because we still want to see MS Dhoni play. So, it's up to BCCI now. Do we want to see MS Dhoni play or not. While the match ended in agony for Dhoni and Co, RCB continued their revival with a sixth straight win in a row, a remarkable feat that saw them rise from the bottom of the table to make the playoffs. Speaking of Dhoni, former Australian opener Matthew Hayden said, Yeah, I suppose the thing is when you come to the end of your career, whether it is the last part of his career or not, what you don't want to see is diminishing returns as an athlete. But at the back, it's really hard to hit balls. Dhoni made 25 off 13 balls with the help of three fours and a huge six, showing that he can still send the ball a long, long way.

T20 World Cup: Team India Can Go All The Way In Dravid-Rohit Combo's Last Assignment

World Test Championship Final: India's coach-captain combine of Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma is all set for their third ICC World Cup competition in the last two years, which will definitely be their final major event when the Men-in-Blue land in the USA and Caribbean for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, starting on June 1. With Dravid showing no interest in continuing, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is searching for a new Head Coach for the men's side and thus the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 will be their last event as coach and captain combine. The question foremost in the minds of Indian cricket fans is whether Dravid and Rohit will be able to spearhead India to the title in the T20 World Cup 2024. Will they be able to help India regain the title after their triumph in the inaugural edition in 2007? This will be their third ICC event since 2022. Their first tilt as a combine at an ICC event was in the T20 World Cup in 2022 in Australia. The Indian team reached the semifinals but lost to eventual Champions England. Next came the 2023 World Test Championship Final against Australia which too ended in disappointment for Dravid and Sharma as they succumbed to the brilliant onslaught by Travis Head. They reached the zenith of their combined as coach and captain at the Men's One-day World Cup at home when India reached the final after a brilliant unbeaten run in the league stage, winning all nine league matches. They handed New Zealand a 70-run defeat in the semifinal to reach the final but went down to Australia by six wickets in the summit clash. While Virat Kohli was the best performer with the bat, amassing an astonishing 765 runs at an average of 95.62 at a strike rate of 90.31, hitting three centuries and six half-centuries. Rohit Sharma was not far behind, hammering 597 runs in 11 innings at an average of 54.27 and a strike rate of 125.94, hitting a century and three half-centuries. On the bowling front, Mohammed Shami was the best in the entire tournament as he claimed 24 wickets in just seven matches to top the charts. Jasprit Bumrah bagged 21 wickets. So, as they get ready for the 2024 T20 World Cup, Dravid and Rohit will be expecting to go all the way in this edition so that they can end their partnership as coach and captain on a glorious note. Considering the way things are going, it may also prove to be the last T20 World Cup for Rohit Sharma, who was a member of the squad that won the inaugural edition in 2007. The selectors have picked a strong 15-member side and besides Virat and Rohit, Ravindra Jadeja, Suryakumar Yadav, Bumrah, Mohd Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav were part of the team that played the 2023 ODI World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on November 19, 2023. The squad has been bolstered by the return of wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who has made a successful return after a 14-month break in the India Premier League. Hardik Pandya, who had pulled out of the 2023 World Cup due to an injury suffered during the clash with Bangladesh in Pune, is also back in action, though his return has not been as successful as that of Pant and Pandya had to suffer the ignominy of being booed by fans in Indian stadiums. The same goes for Axar Patel who too was forced to withdraw from the ODI World Cup due to an injury and is now back for the T20 World Cup. Virat is in tremendous form as he leads the standings for the Orange Cap with 708 runs and though there have been some concerns in some quarters over his strike rate, he has performed his role superbly for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Rohit has managed to score 417 runs in 14 matches hehe struck his first IPL century after many years and ended his campaign with a half-century in Mumbai Indians' final match, though that was in a losing cause. Among the bowlers that have been picked for the T20 World Cup, Bumrah has bowled superbly to claim 20 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 16.80 and an economy rate of 6.48. He was brilliant in taking his best haul of 5-21 this season. Fellow pacer, Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal have claimed 17 wickets apiece at the end of the league phase for their respective teams while Kuldeep Yadav ended IPL 2024 with 16 wickets for Delhi Capitals. The team will, however, be without Mohd Shami who is still recovering from surgery. Pant's return fills a big gap in the T20 World Cup team though KL Rahul had done reasonably well in the ODI World Cup and was the top-scorer for India in the final against Australia. However, the inherent gaps in the selection have left the squad a bit imbalanced with four spinners in the 15-member squad, which many feel is a luxury in conditions in the USA and West Indies. The middle order looks a bit suspect despite the presence of Pant, Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and newcomers Shivam Dube and Sanju Samson. Though there is not much gap between the IPL 2024 and the T20 World Cup, the fact that the players go into the World Cup with sufficient match practice augurs well for the squad. How much will depend on how quickly they recover from the exertions of the IPL and get ready for the mega event. But considering modern training and recovery techniques and equipment, it may not prove a big hassle for the players. So, considering the kind of resources that India have and the form shown by their top players in the IPL, the team managed by Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma is capable of going all the way to the title in the T20 World Cup. It all depends on how they work out the selection of their playing XIs for various opponents and perform on that given day. Indian Squad for T20 World Cup: Rohit Sharma (C), Hardik Pandya (V-C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd Siraj.

Not Kohli or Faf, Harbhajan Singh names RCB's unsung hero as game changer against CSK

Not Kohli or Faf, Harbhajan Singh names RCB's unsung hero as game changer against CSK Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh believes Rajat Patidar changed the game for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru with his quick-fire knock against Chennai Super Kings in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. RCB ended CSK's title defence by becoming the first team to qualify for the playoffs after having just one win in their first seven games of the season. In a rain-affected match, the duo of Virat Kohli and skipper Faf du Plessis forged a 78-run stand. Their partnership provided the base for RCB to put on a total which would help them reach the final four. After Kohli's dismissal, Patidar came in and struck 41 off just 23 deliveries on a surface which came in the aid of spinners. After the rain, the pitch offered a good deal of turn to the spinners. Patidar smacked four maximums into the stands and picked two boundaries to help RCB put 218/5 on the board. Kohli and Faf did well to not lose wickets at the time when the ball was spinning a lot just after the rain. This is a win I can't describe. I think Rajat Patidar changed the game with his knock. Cameron Green was in red-hot form, Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel. CSK fought back and looked well set to put 201 runs on the board which would have improved their net run rate than that of RCB's. With 17 runs needed in the final over, MS Dhoni cleared the entire stadium with a 110m six. But Dayal kept cool and struck back by removing Dhoni to put RCB just a step away from the final spot in the playoffs. Relying on the slower back-of-the-hand deliveries, he conceded just one run in the next four balls to seal a 27-run win for RCB. Yash Dayal became the superhero, after taking Dhoni's wicket he just conceded one run in four balls which was incredible, Harbhajan added. RCB will finish the group stage in the fourth spot with 14 points and a net run rate of 0.459. Their opponent for the Eliminator clash is yet to be decided. (ANI)

Goa police arrest man from Bengaluru for cyber bullying woman and extortion

Goa police arrest man from Bengaluru for cyber bullying woman and extortion The Goa cyber crime police have arrested a man from Bengaluru on charges of cyber bullying a woman and extortion after posting a fake job advertisement online, an official said on Sunday. Following a complaint by the Goa-based woman, the cyber crime team arrested the accused, Mohan Raj V (29), on Saturday after laying a trap, a police spokesperson said. The victim in her complaint claimed the accused published a fake job advertisement for a vacancy at a foreign bank and contacted her through a chatting app, he said. ''The accused lured her into attending an online interview via video call, during which some persons, posing as representatives of the company, coerced her to undress, recorded the video and took screenshots,'' the spokesman said. The accused then began to blackmail the woman, demanding sexual favours to delete the compromising material, he said. The woman alleged that the accused harassed her for the past two months and demanded she meet him in Bengaluru or else he would make her videos and pictures public. A team led by Superintendent of Police Rahul Gupta travelled to Bengaluru with the victim and laid a trap. ''After extensive efforts and a long chase, the accused was apprehended when he arrived to meet the victim,'' the spokesperson said. Police said the accused has confessed to his crime. ''The chats and videos of the victim recorded on the phone of the accused were recovered. The phone will be sent for a cyber forensic examination,'' he said. The investigation suggested the accused created fake accounts using VPN phone numbers and posted fraudulent job offers targeting female victims. ''They (the arrested person and others) randomly contacted women, induced them to participate in online interviews with promises of high salary packages, and then recorded their objectionable images and videos. These recordings were subsequently used to blackmail the victims for sexual gratification,'' he said. After the woman's complaint, the police on April 30 registered a case against unidentified persons. Following the arrest, the accused was booked under Indian Penal Code sections 354 A (sexual harassment), 384 (extortion) and provisions of the Information Technology Act, the police said.

'The Best Thing To Happen...', DK Claims Dhoni's Masssive Six Proved Helpful In Sealing Playoffs Berth

Following Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Following Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) 27 run victory over the five-time champions CSK, wicketkeeper batter Dinesh Karthik revealed about how it was a massive six by MS Dhoni that made all the winning difference for RCB as the Faf du Plessis side sealed a playoffs berth after a forgetable start to their IPL 2024 campaign. RCB's road to the playoff is unlike anything we have ever seen. The team that spent time at the bottom of the table during the first half of the season turned on a switch and went on to win six games on the trot whilst displaying tremendous efforts with the bat, ball and in the field. CSK needed 17 runs off the last over to secure the final playoff berth and it was the man who many bowlers fear, MS Dhoni on strike. Yash Dayal was trusted to bowl to the Indian veteran and was smashed for a 110 meters massive six after the left arm pacer bowled a hip-high full toss which was sent out of the Chinnaswamy stadium. According to Karthik, due to the ball being lost and a new ball was given to the bowlers, helped the team win the game. The best thing to happen today was Dhoni hitting that six outside the ground, and we got a new ball, which was much better to bowl with, Karthik said in a video posted by RCB on social media. Dhoni was then dismissed on the very next delivery after the ball was replaced as Dayal bowled a slower one on leg which found the edge of the bat and resulted in the catch being taken, turning the game heavily into RCB's favor. Yash, that was good bowling. When in doubt, always bowl a hip-high full toss on leg stump. Wherever he is, its a good mantra to follow when the ball is wet, he added jokingly.

'Bhrasht Janata Party' sought to dilute Adivasi rights, says Congress

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Sunday claimed that the Modi government's Forest Conservation Amendment Act had undid the progress of the historic Forest Rights Act of 2006 and accused the BJP of diluting tribal rights. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh posed questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his rally in Jharkhand's Jamshedpur. Why do the people of Jamshedpur still suffer from poor connectivity? Why is it that the 2As and their tempo-loads of black money roam free, while Jharkhand's Adivasi CM was put in jail? Why is the Adityapur Industrial Area still waiting for environmental clearance? Why has the PM denied Adivasis their religious identity and refused to recognize the Sarna code? Ramesh said. Todays questions for the PMs Jamshedpur visit: 1. Why do the people of Jamshedpur still suffer from poor connectivity? 2. Why is it that the 2As and their tempo-loads of black money roam free, while Jharkhands Adivasi CM was put in jail? 3. Why is the Adityapur Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) May 19, 2024 Elaborating on what he said were jumla details, he said Jamshedpur, despite being an industrial hub, has poor transport connectivity. The number of trains running to key cities such as Bhagalpur, Bengaluru, and Delhi are inadequate, he said. The city had a functional airport until 2016 but despite being inducted into the UDAN scheme in 2018, plans for a new airport have failed to materialise, Ramesh said. In January 2019, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Jharkhand Government and the Airports Authority of India for the construction of Dhalbhumgarh Airport by December 2022, he said. This would have been a massive boost to the industrial sector, from major players like Tata to the MSME sector in Adityapur. When the December 2022 deadline came and went, BJP's own MPs were compelled to raise the issue in Parliament. On February 27, 2023, the Union Civil Aviation Minister responded and confirmed that the project had been abandoned, Ramesh said. Now, after much hassle, environmental permission seems to have been granted, he said. Why has the Modi government neglected such essential infrastructure in Jharkhand, Ramesh asked. What happened to 'Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas'? he said. The outgoing PM's two best friends have been safe from the ED and CBI despite their tempos full of black money but Jharkhand's Adivasi Chief Minister was shamelessly thrown into jail. This is hardly surprising given how the Bhrasht Janata Party has sought to undermine Adivasi identity and dilute Adivasi rights, Ramesh said. Last year, the Modi government passed the Forest Conservation Amendment Act which undid the progress of the historic Forest Rights Act of 2006 and scrapped provisions for the consent of local communities and other statutory requirements for forest clearance in vast areas, he said. The intention, of course, is to hand over access to the Prime Minister's best friends. Will the PM ever stop paying lip service to the slogan of Jal-Jangal-Zameen and meaningfully commit himself to Adivasi welfare? the Congress leader said. Can he shed some light on why the ED and CBI are yet to investigate his best friends' tempos? Ramesh said. He said for years, Jharkhand's tribal communities, followers of the Sarna faith, have sought official recognition of their distinct religious identity in India. However, the recent decision to remove the 'Others' option from the religion column in the census poses a dilemma for Sarna adherents, who must now choose between leaving the column blank or aligning themselves with specified religions, Ramesh said. In November 2020, the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly passed a resolution endorsing this demand, he pointed out. Despite former BJP Chief Minister Raghubar Das's assurance of enacting the Sarna Code by 2021, and Home Minister Amit Shah promising the same in 2019, no progress has been made by the Modi Sarkar. As Prime Minister Modi visits Jharkhand, will he address this issue and clarify where he stands on enacting the Sarna Code? Were the promises made by Raghubar Das and Amit Shah mere jumlas? Ramesh said and asked the prime minister to break his silence on these issues.

'MS Knows What He Is Going To Do': CSK Bowling Coach Eric Simons Claims Dhoni Has Made Up Mind On His Future

Chennai Super Kings: Following the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) elimination from playoff contention with a loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), CSK bowling coach Eric Simons spoke out about MS Dhonis contribution to the team and his future. Dhonis retirement from the IPL is one of the biggest talking points as the 42-year-old former Indian captain is speculated to have played his last game for the men in yellow, a team which he has led to five IPL titles. There are so many memories of MS Dhoni, the knocks that he plays get you out of trouble. I was in the dugout and said it was incredible we are in a situation with our backs against the wall and he is at the wicket you just don't stop believing he can win for you, So I think that is one of the things that he brings to the group is the incredible self-belief. But he has a very simple structure and understanding of the game. I think that's what a lot of cricketers should strive for to, really understand the game and he does and he helps guys with that sort of information and knowledge so it is not to play like MS but understand your game and that's where MS is tremendous, said Eric. RCB pulled off a major comeback to upset the CSK fans as the team now sitting in fourth place was lurking towards the bottom end of the table for the first half of the season. What followed was incredible as they won the next six games on the trot to progress to the next stage where they will face either Rajasthan Royals or Sunrisers Hyderabad depending on the final two league games of the season. But I think anybody wants to speculate about his future, that is crazy. MS knows what he is going to do. I know that this year I have seen him hit the ball from the pre-tournament camp. So he is playing extremely well and he will make the decision. But he is a fantastic guy to be around. He has been fantastic to witness from the days I was with India and now with CSK. He is an incredible cricketer and an incredible individual in terms of his understanding of cricket and life. I think in many ways that what he passes on to guys is the incredible self-belief, never say die and a simple understanding of the game of cricket he can put it in simple words and I think that is one of the best things about him, added Simons.

'Bhrasht Janata Party' sought to dilute Adivasi rights: Jairam Ramesh

'Bhrasht Janata Party' sought to dilute Adivasi rights: Jairam Ramesh The Congress on Sunday claimed that the Modi government's Forest Conservation Amendment Act had ''undid'' the progress of the historic Forest Rights Act of 2006 and accused the BJP of diluting tribal rights. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh posed questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his rally in Jharkhand's Jamshedpur. ''Why do the people of Jamshedpur still suffer from poor connectivity? Why is it that the 2As and their tempo-loads of black money roam free, while Jharkhand's Adivasi CM was put in jail? Why is the Adityapur Industrial Area still waiting for environmental clearance? Why has the PM denied Adivasis their religious identity and refused to recognize the Sarna code?'' Ramesh said. Elaborating on what he said were ''jumla details'', he said Jamshedpur, despite being an industrial hub, has poor transport connectivity. The number of trains running to key cities such as Bhagalpur, Bengaluru, and Delhi are inadequate, he said. The city had a functional airport until 2016 but despite being inducted into the UDAN scheme in 2018, plans for a new airport have failed to materialise, Ramesh said. ''Can he shed some light on why the ED and CBI are yet to investigate his best friends' tempos?'' Ramesh said. He further said that more than half of Jamshedpur's vital industrial hub - the Adityapur Industrial Area - has remained in regulatory limbo since 2015. ''This Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is home to 1,200 units, including 11 large-scale, 64 small-scale, and 166 tiny industries. In 2015, the Jharkhand State Industry Department provided clarifications regarding 54 acres of forest land within the 276-acre Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at the Adityapur Industrial Zone,'' Ramesh said. However, the Modi government's delay in granting forest and environmental clearances have hindered development, he claimed. ''While this project has languished, the Modi Sarkar, in 2019, approved a Rs 14,000 crore SEZ project for Adani Power in Godda. Why is it that the Adityapur Industrial Area has waited almost 10 years, while Adani projects have been quickly pushed through? Was it during this deal that the outgoing PM saw the tempo-loads of black money that he told us about?'' Ramesh said. He said for years, Jharkhand's tribal communities, followers of the Sarna faith, have sought official recognition of their distinct religious identity in India. ''However, the recent decision to remove the 'Others' option from the religion column in the census poses a dilemma for Sarna adherents, who must now choose between leaving the column blank or aligning themselves with specified religions,'' Ramesh said. God's plan baby: Rinku Singh lavish praise on RCB match-winner Yash Dayal

God's plan baby: Rinku Singh lavish praise on RCB match-winner Yash Dayal Star finisher Rinku Singh hailed Yash Dayal who emerged as the hero for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final over against Chennai Super Kings which sealed a playoff spot for the Faf du Plessis side. In one year, Dayal has turned his fortune around in the world of cricket. Last year, while playing for Gujrat Titans Dayal was at the receiving end of criticism after Rinku smashed five sixes in the final over of the game to seal a win for Kolkata Knight Riders. A year later, RCB on Saturday stood on the brink of qualifying for the playoffs of the IPL season. On a rain-interrupted day, RCB batters opened their arms to put 218/5 on the board. CSK needed 201 to qualify for the playoffs and it all came down to Dayal needing to defend 17 runs in the final over. A 110m towering six from MS Dhoni set the tone for CSK to put 201 on the board. Dayal bounced back on the next five deliveries to get RCB across the finish line. Rinku took to Instagram, to congratulate Dayal for his standout performance and wrote, God's plan baby. After Rinku smashed him all around the park, Dayal received a lot of criticism from some sections of fans. But RCB showed faith in the left-arm quick and shelled out Rs 5 crore to acquire his services in the mini-auction last year. Picking up Dhoni's wicket in the final over served as the redemption arc for the 26-year-old speedster. After conceding a six on the first ball, Dayal removed Dhoni on the next delivery. He heavily relied on his slower deliveries to see off the game and conceded just one run in the final four balls. Along with Dayal even RCB redeemed themselves after struggling for the majority of the season. RCB suffered six successive defeats and barely stayed in the race for the playoffs. They went on to win six games on the trot to give themselves a chance to turn the season around. RCB are now two games away from lifting their maiden IPL title. (ANI)

Loyalty test in Bengaluru amidst rain

BENGALURU: Despite the lack of tactical advantage at the venue, M Chinnaswamy Stadium has always bled red for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Even on the morning of the clash against Chennai Super Kings, one could see fans chanting RCB, RCB, RCB from a BMTC bus while crossing the ground on Queens Road. And yet, as the evening wore on, despite the rain forecast, the colour began to change. Yellow slowly started creeping in. The No. 7 (MS Dhoni) yellow jerseys seemed to be the most visible one around the venue, followed by the No. 18 Virat Kohli T-shirts. One of the fans even took it to the next level, donning a MS Dhoni No. 7 jersey in RCB colours. That pretty much set the mood for the contest. Inside the venue, it was hard to tell who the home team was. Every RCB chant was matched by a CSK chant with almost equal number of yellow jerseys in the stands. It was understandable to a large extent, considering how it could well be the last game of Dhoni should Chennai end up on the losing side. With the prediction of rain around, Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and opted to field, and RCB openers Kohli and Faf du Plessis came out all guns blazing. In the second over, Shardul Thakur went for 16 runs followed by a 13-run over from Tushar Deshpande as RCB raced to 31/0 in three overs. That is when the sky opened up and the rain stopped playing. Now, RCB have been on a bit of a winning streak, with five wins in a row. But the road to here has been far from smooth. At one point, RCB had seven losses in eight games and were at the bottom of the points table. It is not just the losses that hurt, but also the manner in which they happened. Before their one-run loss in Kolkata (7th one), they had conceded a record total at home against Sunrisers Hyderabad and lost by 25 runs, largely thanks to Dinesh Karthiks heroics. Among the many honest conversations that happened within the dressing room was a discussion within the spin bowling group. Until the KKR game, RCB had played a frontline spinner Karn Sharma only once; in the opening game of the season against CSK. Since then, they had opted for batting depth and went with part-timers, but it clearly hadnt worked. That is when Karn, Swapnil Singh and other spinners went to the team management. We had a chat, especially as a spin group, we talked to the coach and said we havent used the spinners so well. They took it in a very nice way, recalled Swapnil in a chat with this daily. Karn played against KKR, in their next game, an away contest in Hyderabad, RCB went back to playing two spinners, including Swapnil. That, among other things like Rajat Patidar and Will Jacks getting into the groove, proved to be a crucial piece of the puzzle. RCB won that match by 35 runs. And the spin duo Karn and Swapnil shared four wickets between themselves. Since then, the two spinners have played every game and RCB has continued to win all four. God has been kind, says Swapnil with a big smile. We have had two spinners all the way through till now that has been the changed and things have worked out for the spin group as well, he adds. Even as the play resumed on Saturday after a 41-minute break, once again, RCB would rely on Swapnil and Karn to do the job later in the night for them to get across the line.

Not Kohli's knock or Maxwell's spell, Yash Dayal picks Dhoni's wicket as game-changing moment for RCB

Not Kohli's knock or Maxwell's spell, Yash Dayal picks Dhoni's wicket as game-changing moment for RCB Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer Yash Dayal feels MS Dhoni's dismissal in the final over was the turning point of a nervy, do-or-die clash with Chennai Super Kings in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). The RCB prevailed in the test of redemption against the CSK as they became the final team to qualify for the playoffs. Last season, during the Gujarat Titans clash against Kolkata Knight Riders, Rinku Singh smashed five towering sixes in Dayal's over to seal victory for his team. A year later, Dayal found himself in a similar situation. With 17 needed off the final over, MS Dhoni tonked a 110m six out of the park, foreshadowing a similar outcome for the pacer. But Dayal struck back and removed Dhoni to put RCB just a step away from the final spot in the playoffs. Relying on the slower back-of-the-hand deliveries, he conceded just one run in the next four balls to seal a 27-run win for RCB. I think the turning point, I was bowling the last and the most crucial over, I conceded a six on the first delivery and the next ball, I got Mahi (MS Dhoni) bhai's wicket. So maybe it was the turning point of the game according to me, Dayal said in the post-match press conference. The only thing that was going through my mind was to bowl a good delivery. I didn't have to look at the scoreboard, I just had to bowl well. So that confidence helped me while executing (the final over), he added. Dayal's career has completely turned around since he joined Bengaluru. His performances this season have helped him to put Rinku's heroic five sixes aside. The backing that he has received from the management has certainly played its role. The biggest benefit that I got after joining RCB is that I have received proper backing. The management told me that I am an important player and I will be backed from beginning to end. All I want to say is the result of their decision to back is paying off, Dayal stated. Under a situation that exuded pressure, Dayal pointed out the role of RCB captain Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli's presence which kept the pressure off the youngsters. Faf du Plessis is an unbelievable captain. One of the biggest things is that he is an athlete so positive vibes are always there on the ground. Youngsters don't feel pressure when Faf and Kohli are present on the field, Dayal said. RCB will finish the group stage in the fourth spot with 14 points and a net run rate of 0.459. The final two games of the group stage will decide the opponent that Bengaluru will face in the knockout stage. (ANI)

Consumer panel directs company, service centre to replace defective printer, slaps Rs 15K fine

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Srivilliputhur recently directed a printer company and a service centre to replace a customer's defective inkjet printer with a new one, as the former was not repaired properly by the respondents. The panel also slapped a fine of Rs 15,000 on the company and the centre citing deficiency in service. The order was issued by President SJ Chakkkaravarthy and member M Muthulakshmi on a petition filed by B Vijayasarathan, a resident of Srivilliputhur, against the manager of the printer company in Bengaluru, regional manager of the company in Chennai and the authorised person of the service centre in Madurai. The petitioner, who ran an e-seva centre, had purchased a multi-functional inkjet printer for business purposes in November 2022. After a few days, he observed defects in the printer, which had a one-year warranty, and approached a service centre. In spite of servicing for four months, the printer continued to remain defective and the petitioner raised the issue with the service centre and the printer company in vain, sources said. In November 2023, an authorised person of the service centre assured the petitioner to provide him with a new printer, following talks with the company. However, no further action was taken to replace the defective product, and the petitioner approached the commission, sources added. The panel, which observed a deficiency in service, directed the respondents, either individually or jointly, to replace the defective printer with a new one of the same model and company. It further slapped a fine of `10,000 on the respondents for causing mental agony and material loss to the petitioner, and `5,000 for litigation expenses.

Bomb threats in Bengaluru on the rise, 19 FIRs in 4 months

BENGALURU: In slightly over four months, Bengaluru city has recorded 19 FIRs in connection with bomb threat calls, which targeted hundreds of schools and hospitals. Six hospitals and eight schools received threat calls on May 13 and May 14 as well, however, no suspects have been identified so far in any of the cases. Initial forensic analysis of the mail sent to one of the schools indicated that either the sender did not provide any personal detail to the service provider, to complicate the investigation and making it nearly impossible to trace the sender, or in majority of the cases, the mail was sent through platforms like Beeble or Proton, that dont track users internet activity, or share the information with any third party, which is a major roadblock in the investigation, the official said. On May 1, several schools in other cities, including Jaipur and New Delhi also reported multiple bomb threat calls. In all instances, the mails contained identical content, riddled with deliberate grammatical errors and each case involved different service providers, all with high privacy standards that do not record the activities of the sender, the officials pointed out. Tracing the sender involves multiple layers of investigation. In one of the cases, the email was initially traced to Cyprus, but as additional Virtual Private Network (VPN) layers were uncovered, the information was traced to Afghanistan. However, further layers could not be cracked as authorities across borders did not cooperate, a senior official said. A criminologist, who has been tracking bomb threat incidents, told TNIE that these emails are deliberately crafted to induce panic. They are frequently sent to schools during busy mornings or exams, leading to disruptions and requiring administrators to rearrange schedules. Similarly, hospitals are targeted during critical times, to add to already stressful situations for patients, caregivers, and medical personnel. Law & order under control in state: Home Minister Tumakuru: Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara on Saturday said the law and order situation in the state is under control, and the situation cannot be assessed based on a four-month-old report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The NCRB report has come to my attention and it will be discussed with the authorities. But analysis cannot be done based on a report as the cause of incidents differ from one to another, he told in response to the BJPs allegation that crime rate has increased in the state. The law and order situation is under control and we need not take lessons from the BJP. No matter how much the BJP tries to destroy law and order, we are ready to take strict measures for the safety of the people, he said. Comparative figures on murders reported during BJPs rule and during Congress rule will be released soon, for people to know the facts, he said.

Action on Prajwal Revanna is OK, but false case against Revanna, says Deve Gowda

BENGALURU: Breaking his silence on the sexual abuse charges against his grandson and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, JDS supremo HD Deve Gowda on Saturday clarified that he has no objection to the legal action initiated against Prajwal. But he alleged that the ruling Congress has created a case against his son and MLA HD Revanna. Prajwal fled the country after casting his vote in Hassan on April 26. After this, the Karnataka government set up an SIT based on the state womens commissions recommendation, to probe the Hassan sex scandal. Meanwhile, the SIT arrested Revanna on May 4 in connection with the alleged abduction of a victim of the alleged sexual abuse. Revanna got bail and was released from jail on May 14. But he is facing another case of alleged sexual abuse and hearing will be held on Monday. Gowda made his last public appearance on April 26 when he cast his vote at Paduvalahippe village in Hassan district along with his wife Channamma and family members. He did not step out of his Padmanabha Nagar house in Bengaluru after the scandal came to light. Attempts to tarnish image of family: HDD Deve Gowda did not even campaign in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka. On Saturday, he turned 92 and visited Sri Tirumalagiri Venkataramanaswamy Temple at JP Nagar as he does on his birthday every year and chose to speak to the media on the occasion. We have no objection to the action being taken against Prajwal. But people of the state have realised how a case has been created against Revanna, he said. He said he will not comment on it as his son and former CM HD Kumaraswamy has spoken elaborately on behalf of his (Gowdas) family. I will not take the names of those involved, but action should be taken against all of them, including Prajwal, as per law. It is the governments responsibility, he said. Replying to a query, Gowda said its true that his detractors are trying to tarnish the image of his family. On BJP leader and lawyer Devaraje Gowdas allegation that Deputy CM DK Shivakumar is behind the conspiracy, the former PM clarified that Kumaraswamy has spoken about all matters related to it. As JDS state chief, Kumaraswamy has been handling various issues related to the party. He has even clarified that action should be taken against all those, including Prajwal, involved in the circulation of obscene pen drives, he said. The former PM took exception to mediapersons camping outside his house. What have you achieved (by camping outside my house)? Now I am putting an end to it and you are free to telecast. I have campaigned (for the NDA candidates) in the LS elections and will speak after June 4 (when poll results will be announced), he said. Arrest warrant against MP An arrest warrant against absconding Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna was issued on Saturday in connection with the alleged sexual abuse cases. The warrant was issued by the special magistrate court on an application by SIT

If Devaraje Gowda has any proof of 100 crore bribe he must go to Lokayukta says D K Shivakumar

BENGALURU: Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has refuted the allegations levelled by BJP leader Devaraje Gowda that he offered Rs 100 crore to the latter to frame JDS state president and former CM H D Kumaraswamy as the mastermind behind the circulation of pendrives containing obscene videos allegedly of Hassan JDS MP Prajwal Revanna. If Devaraje Gowda has any proof, he must lodge a complaint with the Lokayukta. He must be mentally unstable and my sympathies are with him. The media is aware and intelligent enough to separate the chaff from the grain. It is not correct to report whatever is said, Shivakumar said here on Saturday. To a query on his meeting with Devaraje Gowda, Shivakumar said hundreds of people meet him as he is a deputy CM. Both good and bad people visit me, and it is impossible to assess the background of people and their intentions. I havent spoken or done anything wrong, hence I dont worry about these things. They are using my name for the sake of publicity, he said. On former PM H D Deve Gowda demanding action against all those who are involved in the pendrive case, he said, Deve Gowda has gone to a temple on his birthday. May God give him health and happiness. I pray that his pain goes away. I wish him a happy birthday. Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy refuted allegations of his involvement in the case. Devaraje Gowda had also alleged that Shivakumar had formed a team of ministers, including Cheluvarayaswamy, Krishna Byre Gowda and Priyank Kharge, to strike a deal on framing Kumaraswamy in the circulation of the pen drives. The role of the three in the case is being discussed. Prajwal, who made the videos, his driver Karthik who downloaded them and Devaraje Gowda who is facing charges of sharing the pendrives. But Devaraje Gowda, who had been feuding with Revannas family for a year, is now close to them, he said. Let Kumaraswamy get Prajwal back from abroad instead of dragging Shivakumar into the issue, he said. Since Shivakumar is the DCM, Devaraje Gowda might have met him to give certain information and it is not right to twist it otherwise, he said. Hitting at Devaraje Gowda, RDPR Minister Priyank Kharge said the former might have had the blessings of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to release the pen drives. He was the Holenarasipura BJP candidate who claimed to have direct contact with Shah. Hence, he might have had the blessings of Shah, he said. The JDS and BJP conspired to hush up the case as they were projecting that the release of the pen drives a bigger crime than who committed the crime, he said. Responding to Devaraje Gowdas remark that the government will collapse after he comes out of jail, Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara said then he will have to be in jail, while Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said, Let him come out of jail first and later we will see whether the government falls or not.

Activists say its time to protect eco-democracy in India

BENGALURU: Climate change activists from across the country, including Karnataka, on Saturday highlighted how the indiscriminate granting of clearances to large projects is impacting the environment and doing irreparable damage to the natural resources. They strongly advocated for the protection of environmental democracy. The group alleged that several new laws and amendments are weakening the forests, coastal zones, wildlife, biodiversity, minerals, and other resources, facilitating environmental destruction. During the discussion, a report was also released by Fridays for Future (FFF), Bahutava Karnataka, and Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) on the State of Indias environment over the last decade. Disha Ravi, Founder, FFF said, It is getting very difficult for activists to survive in the country and it is crucial to hold people in power accountable. We need to think of how we will protect our democracy and ones right to ask questions. She added that according to the Global Witness Report 2023, India is the seventh most dangerous country to be an environment defender and the jailing of activists has subsequently gone up. The upcoming government should prioritise climate change policy, as it will be a big equaliser in the coming years, she said. Rohit Prajapati, environmentalist and founding member of Paryavaran Suraksha Samiti said, The country has reached a stage where we dont have a dispute with the state or judiciary on the facts. Nobody denies that the data. National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders have been extending deadlines for restoration of severalwater bodies but nothing changes on the ground. Many rivers across the country are beyond rejuvenation.

BENGALURU: Chief commissioner of BBMP Tushar Girinath said on Saturday that the Palike is ready to face the monsoon. Girinath told reporters here that 300 trees were uprooted and branches of 800 trees fell in the recent rain in the city. BBMP personnel had cleared those uprooted trees and branches. He said 40 teams have been formed to deal with rain-related incidents during monsoon. They will work 22/7 in the city. The BBMP has deployed marshals and health inspectors to prevent dumping of garbage along the roads and into open drains. Stormwater drains get clogged due to dumping of garbage and this leads to flooding, Girinath said. He said eight control rooms in each zone and a team in each sub-division will work in close coordination with personnel from BWSSB and BESCOM. All major drains have been cleaned. All roadside drains will be cleaned by May 31. Motors have been kept ready to pump rainwater from low-lying areas. People need not worry or panic, he said. He said the 5% property tax rebate would be extended till July and warned defaulters that their movable and immovable properties will be attached or auctioned as per law to recover tax arrears.

India, record holder of hate speeches, says ADR founder

BENGALURU: India holds the proud record of being the country with the highest number of hate speeches . With politics ingrained, no one is open to others views, which often leads to conflicts. We have not evolved as a democracy, said Trilochan Sastry, founder and chairman of the Association for Democratic Reforms. ADR is also the organization that filed several petitions against the electoral bond scheme, which was subsequently struck down by the Supreme Court bench, and termed as unconstitutional. Speaking about Transparency, Accountability, and the Threat to Independent Institutions at the PK Dey Memorial Lecture on Saturday, Sastry said, The Election Commission of India (ECI), an independent body, has received over 20,000 complaints from civil society groups and individuals to act against hate speeches and flouting of several other Model Code of Conduct (MCC), however, there has been no action. He touched upon the necessity to keep independent institutions such as ECI, the judiciary, CBI, the Income Tax department, and others free from the excess of executive powers for a healthy democracy. He raised a fundamental question asking, When a common man breaks the law, he can be arrested and jailed. What about when the government breaks a law or the police? Our constitution lacks answers on this. At least the US has the tort law. The founder explained that since 2014, 8,947 cases under the UAPA, 788 under Sedition, and 1,797 cases under the Money Laundering Act have been registered respectively, the highest when compared to previous regimes. He added that officers in positions of independent bodies end up joining political parties, with some becoming ministers or governors, which raises eyebrows on whether they were actually independent during the years in office or not. Anil Verma, Head, ADR, during his address, spoke about a three-pronged approach to keeping institutions independent. He said, Targeting political parties and not allowing them to field candidates with tainted profiles and criminal cases against them; intensive campaigns to educate voters, especially youth, are needed. Lastly, to maintain pressure on political parties, judicial activism is critical for transparency and accountability. High-octane year for Karnataka government, Parties now pin hopes on LS poll outcome

Around the same time last year, after a hard-fought election, Congress won a clear majority in the Karnataka assembly. After hectic parleys in the national capital, Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar took oath as Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, respectively, on May 20. Now, as the government completes its first year in office, peoples verdict on its performance will be out on June 4, when the results to the 2024 Lok Sabha polls will be announced. It was indeed a politically charged year for the state government and the ruling as well as the opposition parties. For the people in general, it was a bittersweet year, but it was the worst for farmers hit by severe drought. It is not fair to judge the state governments performance based only on the outcome of the Lok Sabha polls in the 28 seats, especially in the state, where the voting patterns for the assembly and Lok Sabha polls are different. But that is how it is viewed now. The Congress campaign in Karnataka was mainly mounted on its governments performance, especially the implementation of five guarantees which included free travel for women in state transport corporation buses, free electricity, financial assistance to women heads of households, Rs 170 in lieu of an additional five kilograms of rice to BPL families, and financial assistance to unemployed youth. From day one, it appeared that the entire focus of the state government was on implementing the guarantee schemes and burnishing its report card to maximise its gains in the Lok Sabha polls. Congress leaders are showcasing the Karnataka model to give credence to its national manifesto. Politically speaking, it did reasonably well on that strategy. However, questions were raised over the effective implementation of those schemes on the ground, its impact on development works and the diversion of funds meant for taking up development works exclusively for people from scheduled castes and tribes. The long-term benefits of such schemes and their impact on the economy are yet to be studied. Last year, it looked like a period between the assembly and Lok Sabha polls. While Congress kept its state unit fighting fit to do an encore of assembly poll performance in the Lok Sabha elections, the government took on the Centre on various issues, including alleged disparity in the devolution of taxes and drought relief. In an unprecedented move, the CM led a protest against the Centre and the state approached the Supreme Court for drought relief funds. The Center-state relations were strained. Farmers, who were in distress due to drought, were hit by delays in disbursement of compensation. Bomb explosion in popular Bengaluru cafe leaves 10 injured The law and order issues caused discomfiture to the government. From a blast at Rameshwaram Caf in Bengaluru, the raising of alleged pro-Pakistan slogans on the corridors of Vidhana Soudha by Congress supporters, assault on a shopkeeper playing devotional songs to gruesome murders in Hubballi, Karnataka was in the news for the wrong reasons. It may not be prudent to say the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated, but they do reflect the situation on the ground. Even in a sex scandal allegedly involving JD(S) MP from Hassan, Prajwal Revanna, the government should have taken proactive measures to prevent the circulation of videos to protect the identity of victims while initiating stern action against the accused. All along, the big question the party kept dodging was whether Siddaramaiah would continue as chief minister for five years or hand over the baton to DK Shivakumar. There is no clarity on it yet, but not giving a clear picture to the people of the state exposes the delicate power equations within the party. On its part, after its drubbing in the assembly polls, the BJP managed to regroup itself to some extent under the new state president BY Vijayendra. But to what extent it has made a turnaround will be known only after the Lok Sabha poll results. Although it is a Modi-centric poll for the BJP, local leaders do play an important role in taking the top leaderships message to the cadre and voters. For JD(S), it was a year of challenges and existential crisis. After the poor show in the assembly polls, it was rocked by the sex scandal allegedly involving its MP. As the Siddaramaiah government enters its second year in office, Lok Sabha results could further strengthen its position, or it may trigger intense political churning in the state.
