History-chasing Man City eye Premier League title 'destiny'
MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM: Pep Guardiola urged history-chasing Manchester City to seize their title destiny as the battle for Premier League supremacy reaches a thrilling climax on Sunday. Guardiola's all-conquering team go into the final day of the season with a two-point lead over second-placed Arsenal thanks to an eight-game winning streak. City host West Ham knowing a win will seal an unprecedented fourth successive English title. Even if Luton win and Forest lose, the Hatters' vastly inferior goal difference means they need a mathematical miracle to survive.

MUNICH: Thomas Tuchel says he is still leaving Bayern Munich after talks on extending his stay at the club fell through. Bayern said in February that Tuchel would leave at the end of the season but the coach said Friday that he held talks with the club on a 180-degree turn that would have seen him stay after all. We found no agreement on further cooperation so the agreement from February remains in force, he said. In the three months since Bayern said Tuchel was leaving, it has tried and failed to sign a series of high-profile replacements. Xabi Alonso is staying with Bayer Leverkusen after beating Bayern to the Bundesliga title, Tuchel's predecessor Julian Nagelsmann signed an extension with the German national team, and Ralf Rangnick remains with Austria. Bayern is without a trophy this season for the first time since 2012 after losing the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen, but Tuchel's team was praised for reaching the Champions League semifinals before a narrow loss to Real Madrid. There was also a petition from some Bayern fans calling on the club to keep Tuchel. Sunil Chhetri, who had come to represent the only peak in a sport filled with troughs, was going to stop playing. Its not that I was feeling tired, not that I was feeling this or that, he reflected in the video. When the instinct came that this should be my last game, I thought about it a lot and eventually I came to this decision. The upcoming World Cup qualifier against Kuwait on June 6 would be his last game. After 19 years of wearing India Blue, its goodbye. Some sportspersons, when they retire, you can sum up their greatness thanks to their sheer body of work. On the other side of the scale are athletes who represented something more than achievements. Chhetri is that rare breed of athlete who straddled both. Just by the sheer weight of numbers, he is an undoubted Indian football superstar (150 caps, 94 goals, multiple titles). But over time, he became something greater; to a nation starved of success in the worlds most popular sport, the forward became an elixir. A powerful antidote in an arena beset by controversy, questionable appointments and apathy. The forward was reason enough for fans to switch on TV sets up and down the country. For Indian millennials who had caught IM Vijayan and Bhaichung Bhutia only during the twilight of their careers, Chhetri had the buy-in from even before he was an established member of the side. During the AFC Challenge Cup final in 2008, the forward scored a hat-trick against Tajikistan to help the nation qualify for the 2011 edition of the Asian Cup. The last time before 2011 was in 1987. His career had a lift-off. Even before then till now, whenever the national team did something of note, Chhetri was usually the architect or at least part of the support group. He would either score the winning goal, towering over defenders taller than him or tuck home the penalty or lay it on a plate for one of his teammates. Last year, when speaking to this daily, Chhetri lifted the lid on what made him stay relevant since coming onto the stage in 2005. I have been blessed to play with players who have helped me a lot, he had said. I think my work is just the final part but a lot of hard work is done by a lot of others... the last 19 years I have been surrounded by players who have helped me... thats the reason I have been relevant for so many years. In a roundabout way, his insistence on the collective further embellishes his legacy. Against Kuwait, he will wear Indias Blue for one last time to hassle defenders. At the Salt Lake Stadium, Chhetri will use the vast green expanse to paint his canvas for one final time he may score for a record-extending 95th time. But he will do what he has always done. Press the opposition, win headers against defenders over six feet and cajole a performance out of his team, who will look up to him for one final time. Once the referee blows the final whistle, the tears will roll down the cheeks. It will also be a celebration as the masses will collectively stand up and applaud one of the totemic figures this country has had in the sport. A few days later, a question that has been frequently asked for the last five years will become reality. Who after Chhetri?

In his decorated career, India's former ace striker Bhaichung Bhutia passed the baton to him and chose Chhetri to lead the national football team. Chhetri featured at the 2011 AFC Asian Cup and was first named the national team captain at the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers and led India to yet another Nehru Cup trophy in 2012. Chhetri also led India to the Tri-Nations Cup in 2023. Chhetri has won the prestigious All India Football Federation (AIFF) Player of the Year title a total of seven times in 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018-19 and 2021-22 seasons. He has also won the FPAI Indian Player of the Year award in 2009, 2018 and 2019. Chhetri also won two big Government of India sporting honours, the Arjuna Award in 2011 and the Khel Ratna Award , the country's biggest sporting honour in 2021. It was under his leadership India entered the top 100 rankings for the first time in 2023 since 2018. After taking the initial steps in his career, Chhetri made his debut as a professional for Mohun Bagan in 2002. He stayed with one of the most decorated clubs in the history of Indian football till 2005, netting eight goals in 18 matches. He travelled across India and featured for JCT (2005-08), East Bengal (2008-09), Dempo (2009-10), Chirag United (2011), Mohun Bagan (2011-12), Churchill Brothers (2013 on loan) and Bengaluru (2013-15, 2016-present). His career wasn't just limited to Indian soil, he boarded the plane to have stints abroad with USA's Major League Soccer club Kansas City Wizards (2010) and Portugal club Sporting CP (2012-13). These stints refined his game and turned him into a more well-rounded striker. Overall, the captain fantastic has scored 158 goals in 365 club appearances throughout his two-decade career. He made his senior-level debut for India in June 2005 against arch-rivals Pakistan and found the back of the net on his debut. Sunil Chhetri breaks Brazilian legend Pele's international goal record Chhetri has scored 94 goals in 150 international matches for India, making him the fourth-highest scorer across all of international football. Among the active players, he is only behind stars like Lionel Messi or Argentina (106 goals in 180 matches) and Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo (128 goals in 205 matches). In his club career, Chhetri has won many accolades. With Dempo, he won the I League 2009-10, followed by a win with Churchill Brothers in the 2012-13 season. The majority of Chhetri's accomplishments have come with Bengaluru FC which includes I League (2013-14, 2015-16), Indian Super League (2018-19), Federation Cup (2014-15, 2016-17), Super Cup (2018) and Durand Cup (2022).
