Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh reveals his picks for finalists of IPL 2024

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh reveals his picks for finalists of IPL 2024 Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh named Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders as the two teams he feels will play the Indian Premier League (IPL) final. After enduring a month full of defeats in April, RCB are flying high with six wins on the trot. They defied the mathematical odds and punched their ticket for the playoffs following a 27-run against Chennai Super Kings on Saturday at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. After scripting a story nothing short of a fairytale, RCB became the first side ever to qualify for the knockout stage after registering a sole win in their first seven games of a season. The Challengers became the fourth team after Rajasthan Royals, table-toppers Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad to qualify for the playoffs. With the form that RCB are enjoying, Harbhajan feels that Kohli and KKR team mentor Gautam Gambhir who have had their on-field scuffle will return to face each other in the final. I feel that RCB and KKR will play the final. If that happens Kohli and Gambhir will be back to face each other. RCB can win the trophy from this point, they have fought hard for each run. If they play with this energy then it will be hard to stop this team, Harbhajan Singh said on his YouTube channel. The hype around Kohli and Gambhir's rivalry started to build in the previous edition of the IPL. A verbal spat between the Lucknow Super Giants bowler Naveen-ul-Haq and Royal Challengers Bangalore star batter Virat Kohli. LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir became the central figure as he was seen having an animated conversation with Virat after the match. Players, including KL Rahul, and support staff were seen separating the two. Kohli was then seen having a lengthy chat with LSG captain KL Rahul. In their second encounter of the previous season, Kohli had celebrated the fall of the LSG wickets during their innings in his trademark animated aggression. He was seen blowing kisses to the crowd after RCB won the game. However, during this year's IPL match between Gambhir's KKR and Virat's RCB, a lot of fans were excited about the possibility of another aggressive face-off between these two Indian stars. However, both Gambhir and Virat were spotted smiling and hugging each other, possibly hinting towards putting their past behind them. (ANI)

With IMD-Hyderabad predicting only light rain in isolated areas of Hyderabad and Telangana on Sunday, the IPL match against the SRH and Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Uppal Stadium is likely to be played without interruptions. Popular social media personality, Telangana Weatherman '' also said in a tweet that rain is less likely and if at all there are any interruptions they will be minor as seen in Bengaluru in yesterday's match. Meanwhile, the Hyderabad side is keen on winning their last league stage match against the PBKS as they eye for the second position. On the other hand, the Punjab Kings are confident as they look to finish their IPL campaign on a winning high. SRH is still in the race for the second spot in the table. God's plan baby: Rinku Singh lavish praise on RCB match-winner Yash Dayal

God's plan baby: Rinku Singh lavish praise on RCB match-winner Yash Dayal Star finisher Rinku Singh hailed Yash Dayal who emerged as the hero for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final over against Chennai Super Kings which sealed a playoff spot for the Faf du Plessis side. In one year, Dayal has turned his fortune around in the world of cricket. Last year, while playing for Gujrat Titans Dayal was at the receiving end of criticism after Rinku smashed five sixes in the final over of the game to seal a win for Kolkata Knight Riders. A year later, RCB on Saturday stood on the brink of qualifying for the playoffs of the IPL season. On a rain-interrupted day, RCB batters opened their arms to put 218/5 on the board. CSK needed 201 to qualify for the playoffs and it all came down to Dayal needing to defend 17 runs in the final over. A 110m towering six from MS Dhoni set the tone for CSK to put 201 on the board. Dayal bounced back on the next five deliveries to get RCB across the finish line. Rinku took to Instagram, to congratulate Dayal for his standout performance and wrote, God's plan baby. After Rinku smashed him all around the park, Dayal received a lot of criticism from some sections of fans. But RCB showed faith in the left-arm quick and shelled out Rs 5 crore to acquire his services in the mini-auction last year. Picking up Dhoni's wicket in the final over served as the redemption arc for the 26-year-old speedster. After conceding a six on the first ball, Dayal removed Dhoni on the next delivery. He heavily relied on his slower deliveries to see off the game and conceded just one run in the final four balls. Along with Dayal even RCB redeemed themselves after struggling for the majority of the season. RCB suffered six successive defeats and barely stayed in the race for the playoffs. They went on to win six games on the trot to give themselves a chance to turn the season around. RCB are now two games away from lifting their maiden IPL title. (ANI)

Not Kohli's knock or Maxwell's spell, Yash Dayal picks Dhoni's wicket as game-changing moment for RCB

Not Kohli's knock or Maxwell's spell, Yash Dayal picks Dhoni's wicket as game-changing moment for RCB Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer Yash Dayal feels MS Dhoni's dismissal in the final over was the turning point of a nervy, do-or-die clash with Chennai Super Kings in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). The RCB prevailed in the test of redemption against the CSK as they became the final team to qualify for the playoffs. Last season, during the Gujarat Titans clash against Kolkata Knight Riders, Rinku Singh smashed five towering sixes in Dayal's over to seal victory for his team. A year later, Dayal found himself in a similar situation. With 17 needed off the final over, MS Dhoni tonked a 110m six out of the park, foreshadowing a similar outcome for the pacer. But Dayal struck back and removed Dhoni to put RCB just a step away from the final spot in the playoffs. Relying on the slower back-of-the-hand deliveries, he conceded just one run in the next four balls to seal a 27-run win for RCB. I think the turning point, I was bowling the last and the most crucial over, I conceded a six on the first delivery and the next ball, I got Mahi (MS Dhoni) bhai's wicket. So maybe it was the turning point of the game according to me, Dayal said in the post-match press conference. The only thing that was going through my mind was to bowl a good delivery. I didn't have to look at the scoreboard, I just had to bowl well. So that confidence helped me while executing (the final over), he added. Dayal's career has completely turned around since he joined Bengaluru. His performances this season have helped him to put Rinku's heroic five sixes aside. The backing that he has received from the management has certainly played its role. The biggest benefit that I got after joining RCB is that I have received proper backing. The management told me that I am an important player and I will be backed from beginning to end. All I want to say is the result of their decision to back is paying off, Dayal stated. Under a situation that exuded pressure, Dayal pointed out the role of RCB captain Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli's presence which kept the pressure off the youngsters. Faf du Plessis is an unbelievable captain. One of the biggest things is that he is an athlete so positive vibes are always there on the ground. Youngsters don't feel pressure when Faf and Kohli are present on the field, Dayal said. RCB will finish the group stage in the fourth spot with 14 points and a net run rate of 0.459. The final two games of the group stage will decide the opponent that Bengaluru will face in the knockout stage. (ANI)

West Bengal: Sandeshkhali TMC worker detained for 'molesting' minor girl A TMC worker has been detained for allegedly molesting a minor girl in West Bengals Sandeshkhali area, police said. The riverine Sandeshkhali area situated on the borders of the Sundarbans, about 100 km from Kolkata had been on the boil in February with protests over allegations of sexual abuse and land grab against now-arrested TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters. An officer of Basirhat Police District said the accused, around 20-years-old, is being questioned. A medical test has been conducted on the girl, he said, adding that its report is awaited.

Stars and turncoats in Bengal

KOLKATA: The ruling Trinamool Congress is contesting all seats except one on a stronger wicket since it won the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 with a comfortable margin. Barrackpore is an exception because BJPs Arjun Singh won the seat in 2019, but he switched to the TMC in 2022, but was back in the saffron fold before the 2024 polls. Seven parliamentary seats are up for grabs in the May 20 elections. They are Bangaon, Barrackpur, Howrah, Uluberia, Sreerampur, Hooghly, Arambagh. In Bangaon, the battleground is set for a fierce contest between Biswajit Das Shantanu Thakur of the BJP, and Pradip Biswas of INC-CPM. Intensifying her attack on BJP, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the state will avenge the injustice of the BJP and the anti-Bengalis will be washed away for sure. Banerjee in a post on her X handle said, It is a sin to block the funds earmarked for development of the poor but continue splurging money on spreading propaganda. The TMC supremo had been vocal about alleged non-payment of Central dues to the state under various schemes like MNREGA (100 days work) and PM Awas Yojana (housing) for the last three years totalling more than Rs 1.65 lakh crore. Bengal will avenge this injustice by the BJP, she said, adding The people of Jhargram, Ghatal and Medinipur have given a clear message -- the Bishorjon of Bangla-Birodhis is certain! Barrackpur Trinamool sources claim the party has an edge in Barrackpur though Arjun Singh left TMC to join BJP as the people are satisfied with the schemes that Banerjee has introduced in every district. Five years ago, Singh switched to the BJP from TMC to win the 2019 polls, only to return three years later. Singh defeated the then TMC candidate Dinesh Trivedi (now in BJP) in 2019 by less than 15,000 votes. This time, Singh is facing TMCs Partha Bhowmick and CPMs Debdut Ghosh, supported by the Congress. Hooghly The constituency will witness the clash of two cine stars: BJPs Locket Chatterjee will be defending the seat against a newcomer, Rachna Banerjee of TMC. The latter hosts a popular TV show. Banerjee was seen visiting villages in Hooghly, meeting people and making hilarious comments. Her comment did not go down well with a section of TMC leaders. The Hooghly seat had its tryst with saffron as early as the first general election that the country saw. Nirmal Chandra Chatterjee won the general election of 1952 as a nominee of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, the earlier version of todays BJP. Since then, much water has flown down the Hooghly. The BJP nominee has vowed that the party will bring back the Tatas to Singur if elected to power in the state. Howrah The constituency comprises seven assembly segments -- Bally, Howrah Uttar, Howrah Madhya, Shibpur, Howrah Dakshin and Sankrail (SC). TMCs MP Prasun Banerjee is pitted against Dr Rathin Chakraborty of the BJP. The CPM has fielded Sabyasachi Chatterjee. The constituency is all set to witness a tough contest between Prasun Banerjee and Rathin Chakraborty, with the TMC having an edge even as the BJP is putting up a tough fight. In the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, the BJP increased its vote share to 38.9% and the TMC bagged 47.4% of the votes. Uluberia Uluberia is another constituency in Howrah district which had a major jute processing centre. However, the industry declined. Around 70 establishments have come up in the industrial park in the region, which is spread across 128.69 acre. These units are into engineering, manufacturing, and also food products. In the 2024 election, Sajda Ahmed of TMC is pitted against Arun Uday Pal Chaudhary of BJP and Azahar Mollick of the Congress. Sreerampur Also written as Srirampore, Serampore, among other spellings, and is in Hooghly district. It was a Danish settlement founded in the 18th century, and acquired by the British in 1845. Today, it is highly urbanized. Since 2009, TMCs Kalyan Banerjee has represented the seat. He is pitted against BJPs Kabir Shankar Bose and CPMs Dipsita Dhar. Arambag Among the seven assembly segments in the seat, the BJP won four and TMC three in the 2021 state polls. Though Aparupa Poddar of TMC wrested the seat from CPMs Sakti Mohan Malik in 2014 and retained it in 2019, her vote share fell drastically. The TMC has nominated Mitali Bag who is pitted against BJPs Arup Kanti Digar and CPMs Biplab Kumar Moitra.

RCB survives a scare to grab final IPL play-off berth with 27-win over CSK

RCB survives a scare to grab final IPL play-off berth with 27-win over CSK Royal Challengers Bengaluru continued their fairytale run to grab the fourth and final play-off berth with a 27-run victory over defending champions Chennai Super Kings in their must-win last IPL league game here on Saturday. It was the sixth straight win for RCB, who first posted a solid 218 for five after being invited to bat and then restricted CSK to 191 for 7 to make it to the play-offs for the ninth time in 15 seasons. RCB survived a scare as Ravindra Jadeja (42 not out) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (25) had conjured up hopes of a turnaround after Rachin Ravindra's 61 but Yash Dayal held his nerves in the final over to take the hosts home. Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad have already qualified for the play-offs. While it was ecstasy for RCB, the legion of fans of Dhoni sank into despair as it could potentially be the last time they witnessed their 'Thala' perform on a cricket field. Down and out after losing seven out of their first eight games, RCB had weaved five wins on the trot to script a remarkable turnaround and give themselves a chance to make it to the final four. On Saturday, the hosts needed to win by at least 18 runs to book the final play-off berth and they did that in style with yet another impressive show at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The two teams finished at 14 points but RCB sneaked into the final four on the basis of a better net run-rate. The equation was in favour of CSK when they began their run-chase as a 200-plus score would have sealed their place in the final four at the expense of RCB even if they had lost the game. However, CSK lost skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (0) and Daryl Mitchell (4) to be reduced to 19 for 2 in the third over. Ajinkya Rahane (33) and Ravindra (61) steadied the innings with a 64-run stand but Lockie Ferguson broke the partnership as the former was holed out by du Plessis and then the New Zealander was run out. Du Plessis then took a screamer to remove Mitchell Santner as CSK slipped to 129 for 6 in 15 overs. With their backs to the wall, Jadeja and Dhoni added a whirlwind 61 off 27 balls to bring the equation down to 11 off five balls to qualify for the play-offs. With CSK needing 17 runs off the last six balls to qualify, Yash Dayal bowled the final over and he was straight away smashed for a six by Dhoni but the pacer came back strongly to dismiss the former CSK skipper and then conceded just one run in next five balls to seal it for RCB. Earlier, sent in to bat, RCB's top-order, led by skipper du Plessis, fired in unison. Du Plessis hit three fours and three sixes on his way to a 39-ball 54, his fourth fifty of the season, while Virat Kohli (47 off 29 balls), Rajat Patidar (41 off 23 balls) and Cameron Green (38 not out off 17 balls) also went on a six-hitting spree to put RCB on solid ground. Openers Kohli and du Plessis began on a positive note and were 31 for no loss when there was a short rain interruption, causing a 40-minute delay. However, on resumption, CSK pressed spinners into the attack. With the ball gripping and turning, spin duo of Maheesh Theekshana (25/0) and Mitchell Santner (23/0) troubled the batters as RCB reached 42 for no loss at the end of the Powerplay. Kohli brought out his slog sweep to clobber two more sixes before holing out to Daryl Mitchell off Santner as RCB slipped to 78 for one in 10 overs. Ravindra Jadeja (40/0 in 3 overs) was however slaughtered by du Plessis, who blasted a four and two sixes to pile up 20 runs off his third over and then completed his 35-ball fifty. Rajat Patidar (41) then got into the act, depositing Theekshana for a maximum. In the 13th over, du Plessis was unfortunately run out at the bowler's end but Patidar continued his onslaught, smashing Simarjeet Singh for a four and a six, while Thakur conceded 17 with Green thumping one over long-on to bring up the 150. Green was, however, dropped by Gaikwad in the deep but Patidar continued to put the bowler under pressure as he smoked Deshpande for two sixes. Green then picked up successive sixes off Thakur, who had Patidar caught at the other end but it was too late as cameos from Dinesh Kartik (14) and Glenn Maxwell (16) swelled the total.

The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park has initiated steps to bring 10 different species of wild animals and birds. Visakhapatnam: Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) has started acquiring a host of exotic animals, including Bengal fox, Himalayan black bear and scarlet macaws, making for a top-notch experience for its visitors. On top of this, IGZP has taken up several other initiatives like installing benches, recreational areas for children and a new animal adoption policy to augment the zoo's finances. IGZP recently welcomed a pair of giraffes from the Kolkata Alipore Zoological Garden. These tall herbivores - a two-year-old male and a four-year-old female - are currently in quarantine under the supervision of zoo doctors. Additionally, four Asian water monitor lizards, scarlet macaws have also been brought to the zoo. New enclosures have been constructed for Bengal fox, Himalayan black bear, hippopotamuses, Indian mar, stamp tailed musk, Asian brown parrots, and more. Spanning across 625 acres, the IGZP in the Seethakonda Reserve Forest in Visakhapatnam offers a unique experience for wildlife enthusiasts. It is surrounded by the picturesque Eastern Ghats on three sides and the Bay of Bengal on the fourth. The park is home to 77 animal species, totalling 835 individuals; this includes carnivores, small mammals, reptiles, ungulates, and birds. Rare endemic and exotic trees and shrubs with water bodies add to the natural beauty. The geography helps in hosting diverse fauna amid two hillocks. The adjoining Kambalakonda Eco Tourism Park, itself, is home to several rare animals. Domestic and foreign tourists are patrons of the Visakhapatnam Zoo. To increase footfall, new cafeterias have been set up. There are ample recreational facilities for children as well. Resting benches and platforms have been placed along all enclosures for the benefit of tourists. In an interesting development, the zoo management has laid down the rules for persons interested in adopting animals. Visitors who adopt animals in the zoo will get tax exemptions under 80G (5) of the IT Act, 1961. Donors who make a contribution of Rs 10,000 to Rs 30,000 can avail themselves of free entry into the zoo for five persons once a year. Donors who contribute Rs 30,000 or more will get a t-shirt, cap, and free entry to participate in all the events held at the zoo. Donors will also receive authorised adoption certificates.

Sandeshkhali TMC worker detained for molesting girl

Sandeshkhali TMC worker detained for molesting girl The police on Saturday detained a TMC worker of Sandeshkhali after he allegedly molested a teenage girl there, an officer said. Allegations of sexual abuse and land grab have been levelled against TMC leaders of Sandeshkhali area in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. According to the complaint lodged by the mother of the girl, the accused on Friday night ''somehow'' entered her house in a village in the area, and molested her. The girl, who is a class 8 student, managed to escape and started shouting for help when family members and neighbours came out. By then, the accused who is around 20 years old managed to flee, the police officer said quoting the complaint. The father of the accused alleged that his son has been framed because they were TMC supporters. ''The girl's family members are BJP supporters. They have been pressuring us to join the party. Since we didn't follow their diktat, this dirty allegation was levelled against my son,'' the father said. An officer of Basirhat Police District said that the accused is being questioned. A medical test has been conducted on the girl, he said, adding that its report has been awaiting. The riverine Sandeshkhali area situated on the borders of the Sundarbans, about 100 kilometres from Kolkata had been on the boil in February with protests over allegations of sexual abuse and land grab against now arrested TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters.

INDIA bloc to win LS polls, BJP will not even cross 200 seats: Mamata

Goghat (WB): West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Saturday claimed that the INDIA bloc will come to power in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and BJP will ot cross the 200 mark in the polls. She accused Congress, and CPI(M) of having entered into a nexus with BJP in the state to discredit the state government and asked the electorate not to vote for any non-TMC parties which will benefit the saffron camp. Addressing an election rally at Goghat under the Arambagh Lok Sabha constituency, Banerjee said I had coined the name INDIA and at the national level we the coalition partners are all working together to resist the autocratic, demonic Narendra Modi government. TMC will play its role in installing the INDIA bloc to power. See what Modi is telling now he is no more making tall '400 paar' seats by BJP. He can read the writing on the wall already. BJP will not cross even 200 tally. BJP will bite the dust, she said. Banerjee alleged that CPI(M), Congress and other Left partners in West Bengal have entered into a 'mahaghot' (unprincipled nexus) with communal, undemocratic, autocrat BJP just to discredit the ruling TMC which is only waging the war against Narendra Modi and Amit Shah in the state. The TMC supremo also slammed CPI(M) for allegedly committing mass murders at places like Goghat and Sihar during its rule and claimed only she as then opposition leader had dared to face the Marxist terror at that time braving her life. I know the true face of CPI(M) in Bengal, she added. Describing Modi and Shah as anti-Bengal, she said, His issuing advertisements in media to profess his love for the state won't cut much ice with the residents of the state who knows these BJP heavyweight leaders will never understand our ethos and sentiments. Banerjee accused Modi and Shah of using doctored, false image of Matuas in one such ad gloating over CAA benefits. Reiterating her allegations about BJP concocting the charges of atrocities against TMC leaders on women of Sandeshkhali, she said, They made some of the poor, unsuspecting women sign on blank papers and incorporated charges of sexual misconduct in the complaint later. She cautioned the voters and the security personnel by alleging that BJP had planned to remove idols from temples in Sandeshkhali and elsewhere and engineer riots to get votes by dividing people. In a conciliatory tone, she added: If there had been stray incidents of mistake, those have been rectified and corrective actions taken on our part. Todays generation might not be aware of the magnitude of atrocities committed on people and political opponents by the CPIM in its reign which had never been addressed by their administration. The goons of the CPI(M) have changed colours and now working for the BJP, the TMC supremo claimed. At the second rally in Bishnupur Lok Sabha seat, Banerjee mentioned Modis comments on alleged consumption of fish by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav during Navratri. She said, Who are you (Modi) to lecture us whether to eat meat, fish or egg? Let everyone eat what he/she likes. Banerjee said every state has its own culinary and dietary tradition and the PM and his party have no right to impose diktat on the people of a region in a country like India. Claiming that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been asking people to invest in shares to boost the stock market, she accused the BJP heavyweight of violating the model code of conduct (MCC).Terming Modi as a jumla PM who only spreads misinformation and gives false promises, she said he had promised two crore jobs in every year in the last polls. So the total number would go up to 10 crore. How many actually get jobs promised by Modi? Why is he not repeating the same promise this time?... I have not seen such a jumla government in my entire political life, Banerjee said. She accused the prime minister of plotting to divide the nation along religious lines and plundering assets of the country.Banerjee charged Modi with trying to change the pluralistic values and secular ideals enshrined in the constitution and change the name of India to Bharat. This has become more pronounced since we named the opposition bloc INDIA, she said.Banerjee also promised once the INDIA bloc comes to power after the polls, measures will be initiated to scrap CAA and NRC and Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Accusing BJP of using central agencies to frame TMC leaders in coal and cattle smuggling cases, she said, Who is in charge of border security? Why will Union Home Minister Amit Shah not be arrested if there are such cases of smuggling? Banerjee alleged that BJP is trying to influence monks but that plan will not succeed. Stating that her government had helped Rama Krishna Mission to renovate the ancestral home of Swami Vivekananda in north Kolkata, she said, I have regular contacts with monastic organizations and that will remain forever. I have great respect for them. In a dig at sitting BJP MP from Bisnupur and partys candidate Saumitra Khan, Banerjee accused him of amassing huge properties during his five-year tenure but not doing anything to secure the money under 100 days central project for the job card holders in three years. Modi, like an emperor, comes to campaign in a luxury aircraft and leaves while she uses a small hired helicopter, she claimed.

Performance is my only currency, I don''t need anyone''s approval or assurance: Virat Kohli

Performance is my only currency, I don''t need anyone''s approval or assurance: Virat Kohli Virat Kohli says he doesn't need either approval or assurance from anyone on his capability as India's premier batter responded to the criticism and debate over his strike rate, asserting that he knows what he can do on the ground. While Kohli has led the batting charts this year in the IPL, his strike rate has also attracted criticism which also includes comments from legendary India batter and former captain Sunil Gavaskar. (I) dont need to react. I know what I can do on ground. I dont need to tell anyone what kind of player I am or what my ability is,'' Kohli said in a recent video released ahead of RCB's crucial IPL encounter against Chennai Super Kings when asked how he deals with external noise. ''Ive never asked anyone how to win a match. Ive learnt this by figuring it out myself in the middle of the ground by failing from experience.'' ''Its not a by-chance thing when you are repeatedly winning matches for the team. For someone to see and analyse a moment and for another player to experience that moment in the middle are two completely different things,'' he added. Kohli said he does not believe in asking someone to stop saying certain things about him. ''I have never felt that I should go and tell someone not to say certain things about me. I know what I can do out there. I dont need anyones approval, or assurance that I played well. I dont need these things. ''I have learnt this from my father very early on. I could have played for the state very early in my career through other means, but my father said only if youre capable you will make it. Performance is my only currency,'' he said. Meanwhile, echoing India skipper Rohit Sharma's sentiments over the impact player rule in IPL, Kohli said it is ''disrupting the balance'' of the game. The mid-innings substitution rule, adopted last IPL, has sparked a row with Rohit expressing his displeasure in a podcast last month. Kohli has urged for a rethink of the rule. ''I agree with Rohit. Entertainment is one aspect of the game but there is no balance,'' Kohli said on Jio Cinema. ''I think it has disrupted the balance and a lot of people are feeling this way, not just me,'' he said. Rohit in the podcast had said, ''I'm not a big fan... It's going to hold back all-rounders. Cricket is played by 11, not 12 (players).'' Punjab Kings set the record for the highest successful chase in T20 history when they overhauled Kolkata Knight Riders' 262 with eight balls to spare. Sunrisers Hyderabad also smashed the record for the highest-ever total in franchise cricket by posting 287/3 against RCB. This edition alone has witnessed eight 250-plus totals and Kohli felt the bowlers' pain. ''Bowlers are feeling like what they should do,'' Kohli said. ''I have never experienced anything like it where bowlers think they will concede four or a six on every ball. Not every team has a (Jasprit) Bumrah or the mystery of Rashid Khan,'' he said. ''With one extra batter, there is a reason I am playing with 200-plus strike rate in the powerplays. I know there is a batsman waiting at No 8 as well. We are playing a high level of cricket and it should not be that dominant in my opinion. There is a beauty about having an equal balance between bat and ball,'' Kohli added. Earlier this month, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said the rule was implemented as a 'test case' and that it also allows two Indian players with opportunities to play in a game. He also said the board and all key stakeholders would deliberate over its continuity. ''I am sure Jay (Shah) bhai has mentioned it already that they will review it and I am sure that they will come to a conclusion which brings the game into balance,'' said Kohli. ''As a batsman, I can say this rule is good but the match should be exciting. Only fours and sixes are not exciting in cricket. Exciting is that you can defend 160 as well, Kohli said.

IPL 2024: RCB Reach 31/0 In Three Overs Before Rain Stops Play In All-important Clash Against CSK

Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Royal Challengers Bengaluru raced to 31 for no loss in three overs of their all-important Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 clash against Chennai Super Kings, before rain stopped play at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday. RCB, currently on a five-match winning streak, need to beat defending champions CSK by at least 18 runs to get into the IPL 2024 playoffs. Leading run-getter Virat Kohli began in stunning fashion by placing a Shardul Thakur square drive for four, before skipper Faf du Plessis drove off the all-rounder for four more and thumped a six over the bowlers head. Kohli used his supple wrists to flick Tushar Deshpande for six, before pulling him for another maximum in the third over. During his unbeaten 19 off nine balls, Kohli also completed 3000 runs at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Just as Maheesh Theekshana was to bowl the fourth over, heavy showers started at the venue and forced players as well as on-field umpires to get off the field, with covers quickly covering the field of play. Rain threat always loomed over the all-important clash which will decide who clinches the last remaining IPL 2024 playoffs spot. The winner of Saturdays clash will book a playoffs spot, joining Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the next round of IPL 2024. If CSK wins irrespective of the margin, they enter the knockouts. A washout would mean RCB would be out of the competition and CSK would book their playoffs spot. Brief scores: Royal Challengers Bengaluru 31/0 in three overs (Virat Kohli 19 not out, Faf du Plessis 12 not out) against Chennai Super Kings

IPL 2024: Santner Replaces Moeen As CSK Elect To Bowl In Winner-takes-the-playoffs-spot Clash Against RCB

Chennai Super Kings: Mitchell Santner replaces Moeen Ali in Chennai Super Kings playing eleven as captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and elected to bowl first against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Saturday. The winner of Saturdays clash will book a spot in the playoffs, joining Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the next round of IPL 2024. If RCB are to enter the playoffs, they need to beat CSK by at least 18 runs. If CSK win, irrespective of the margin, they enter the knockouts. A washout due to a huge rain threat would mean RCB, who are on a five-match winning streak, would be out of the competition and CSK would book their spot in the playoffs. Santner, the left-arm spin all-rounder, comes into the playing eleven as Moeen, the off-spin all-rounder, has returned to his home in England for international duty. The wicket looks good, conditions are overcast and we will look to make the most of the movement in the first 2-3 overs, said Gaikwad. It looks a bit damp, but we'll go with great intent. Every game in the IPL is must must-win, nothing changes for us, we'll take it ball-by-ball, and try and win the small processes. We've won some crucial games to go ahead of the pack in the middle, said Gaikwad. RCB skipper Faf du Plessis said he would have bowled as well and added his playing eleven is unchanged. Faf didnt mention though that Will Jacks is back in England and is replaced by Glenn Maxwell in the playing eleven. But we put up a good score when we batted first last (at the home venue). Losing the toss isn't ideal, but we'll take a lot of confidence from the last five games. The set-up is great, the last match before the knock-out stage, the scenario is nicely set up and we're happy to play our last league game in front of our fans. Not thinking a lot, we'll take it as it comes and do our best, he said. Playing XIs: Chennai Super Kings: Rachin Ravindra, Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Daryl Mitchell, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (wk), Mitchell Santner, Shardul Thakur, Tushar Deshpande, Simarjeet Singh and Maheesh Theekshana Impact Substitutes: Shivam Dube, Sameer Rizvi, Prashant Solanki, Shaik Rasheed, Mukesh Choudhary Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Faf du Plessis (c), Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Rajat Patidar, Cameron Green, Mahipal Lomror, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Karn Sharma, Yash Dayal, Lockie Ferguson and Mohammed Siraj Impact Substitutes: Swapnil Singh, Anuj Rawat, Suyash Prabhudessai, Vyshak Vijaykumar, Himanshu Sharma

I'm as hungry as ever...do not need validation from anyone: Virat Kohli

I'm as hungry as ever...do not need validation from anyone: Virat Kohli Star India batter Virat Kohli said on Saturday that he is hungry as ever and expressed confidence that India will be having a fine campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup that will be held in West Indies and USA next month. India are placed in Group A of the ICC tournament alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, Ireland, Canada and co-hosts USA. India will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York, followed by the marquee clash against Pakistan on June 9 at the same venue. India will then play the USA and Canada on June 12 and 15 respectively. I can say I am as hungry as ever. Once there is no hunger, you will not see me in any tournament. If I do not have that mindset, I cannot play. There is an energy in such tournaments and once there is a good atmosphere within the team, it is a beautiful journey. We had one in the last World Cup (50-over World Cup). We really enjoyed the World Cup. I'm sure we will have a really good tournament this time as well, Virat said on JioCinema. Virat also said that he does not need approval or validation from someone and performance remains the top priority. There has never been a point where I have felt that I should go to someone and ask them not to speak about me. I know what I can do. I do not need approval from anyone. I do not seek validation either. I learnt it from my father in my childhood. There was a time when I was getting a chance to play state cricket in an unfair way. My father said that if he works hard and gets selected, it is fine, otherwise, let it be. For me, performance is everything. Nobody is going to let you play just like that for 16 years, he said. I do not need to react; I know what I can do on the ground. For that, I do not need to prove myself to anyone. I have not asked anybody how to win matches. I have learnt it from being there in such situations and by failing. You can win one or two matches by chance, but if you have done it consistently, it cannot be by chance, he added. Virat's franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will be in action against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Saturday at Bengaluru. With RCB in seventh place with six wins, seven losses and 12 points and CSK in fourth place with seven wins, six losses and 14 points, this match is a knockout match that will decide which team gets to join Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the playoffs. BJP-led NDA govt at Centre will expire soon: TMC's Abhishek

KOLKATA: Asserting that electors of the country will teach a lesson to the BJP in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday claimed that the term of the saffron party-led NDA government at the Centre will expire soon. Addressing a rally in Kultali in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district in support of Trinamool Congress candidate from Jaynagar Pratima Mandal, Banerjee blamed the BJP for making the lives of poor people miserable. A right lesson has to be taught to the BJP which always makes empty promises. The saffron party has stopped making payments to West Bengal under various central schemes like 100-day work and housing programmes, he said. Banerjee, also the nephew of Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, said the central government every year takes away Rs 1.20 lakh crore from West Bengal and the state owes Rs 1.65 lakh crore from the Centre on account of various schemes. He also claimed that though the Centre is ot making payments under various schemes, the West Bengal government is meeting up all these monetary dues of the poor from its exchequer. The TMC has accused the BJP-led NDA government of withholding dues to Bengal under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and Gramin Awas Yojana. The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 aims at enhancing the livelihood security of households in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year. The time has come to secure the basic rights of the people, Banerjee said. The state government, through various social welfare schemes like the Laskhmir Bhandar, is making efforts to help the people of West Bengal financially, he said. 'Lakhir Bhandar' is a popular welfare scheme of the TMC government, which provides a monthly allowance of Rs 1,000 for general-category women and Rs 1,200 for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe women in the state. The Trinamool Congress MP also alleged that under the present dispensation at the Centre, the poor are becoming poorer and the rich getting richer. The term of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre will expire soon, which will be evident once the Lok Sabha election results are out on June 4. He claimed that the INDIA bloc will form the government and that the Trinamool Congress will play a decisive role, he claimed. He also accused the saffron camp of orchestrating a conspiracy to defame the women of Sandeshkhali by paying them to make false rape allegations. Also see, how Tamluk BJP candidate Abhijit Gangopadhay had made obnoxious comments against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The BJP should be thrown away into the Bay of Bengal, the TMC leader said at the rally. A purported video in which BJP nominee and former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay was heard wondering about the amount at which Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is getting sold, triggered a row with the TMC labelling it as BJP's guarantee of disrespecting women, while the saffron party raised doubts about the clip's authenticity. PTI, however, couldn't verify the authenticity of the video. Banerjee said that the BJP always delves into divisive politics and is ot bothered about social and economic uplift of the poor.

With RCB at seventh place with six wins, seven losses and 12 points and CSK in the fourth place with seven wins, six losses and 14 points, this match is a knockout match that will decide which team gets to join Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the playoffs. Speaking to JioCinema along with former cricketer Suresh Raina, Virat revealed that back in 2008 during the Emerging Players tournament in Australia, the then-chief selector Dilip Vengasarkar and Raina pushed his name for the national side. That tournament used to hold a lot of value back then since a lot of great talent would use that as a platform for getting a regular national spot. It was held from 2005-2011. During that tournament, Virat failed in a few initial games while batting in the middle order under the leadership of Subramaniam Badrinath and was benched. When Raina joined the tournament mid-way as a captain, he asked the coach Pravin Amre why he was not playing and Virat was promoted to the opening spot, replacing Ajinkya Rahane on the insistence of Raina. That match happened against New Zealand (when he played as an opener) Dilip was our selector. One thing is that you have heard about someone, the other is that you have seen someone. That makes an different impact. You see someone play, absorb pressure etc. He saw me opening, I made 120. That is when he (Dilip) decided that more chances have to be given to me. I am very thankful to him, I told him before as well that he (Raina) pushed my name, said Kohli. In that tournament, Virat played six games and scored 206 runs at an average of 41.20, with a century and a fifty. His best score was 120*. That match would go on to change Virat's fortunes and he would make his international debut in August 2008 against Sri Lanka. After being in and out of the team due to the presence of seniors, it was the Emerging Players 2009 tournament that helped him establish himself as a permanent player for India. India won that tournament and Virat emerged as a top-scorer with 405 runs in nine games at an average of 50.62, with two centuries and two fifties. His best score was 115*. Speaking on one of his career's biggest heartbreaks, he revealed that not being able to win the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup and the IPL for his side was heartbreaking and the loss in the T20 WC drained him so much that he could not get out of his room. There have been just two heartbreaks in my career, and both were in 2016. One was the T20 World Cup. I was in a space where I thought that I could do anything. The no-balls and everything, that took me a lot of time to get over I was literally drained and didn't get out of my room the next day, said Virat. Then, when we lost the IPL final here (M. Chinnaswamy Stadium). We felt like that was written in the stars, from how we made it to the final. Also, the final was at our home ground. We were chasing 200-odd runs and were over 100 runs in nine overs with no loss. When AB (de Villiers) got out, we needed 68 off 42 balls with eight wickets in hand. It's like how did we lose that game?, he concluded. 2016 was Virat's peak at batting. In 37 international matches, Virat scored 2,595 runs at an average of 86.50, with seven centuries and 13 fifties. In 15 T20Is, Virat scored 641 runs at an average of 106.83 and a strike rate of over 140, with seven fifties. His best score was 90*. Virat was also the top-scorer in the ICC T20 World Cup and won the 'Player of the Tournament' title. In five matches, he has scored 273 runs at an average of 136.50 and a strike rate of over 146, with three half-centuries. But still he could not prevent India's loss to West Indies in the semifinal. In the IPL 2016 as well, Virat emerged as the highest run-scorer and set the record for most runs in a single edition. He scored 973 runs at an average of 81.08 in 16 games, with four centuries and seven fifties. But RCB lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final by eight runs. (ANI)

Had packed my bags in April itself...: Virat Kohli on RCB's poor first half in IPL 2024

Had packed my bags in April itself...: Virat Kohli on RCB's poor first half in IPL 2024 Star India and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Virat Kohli said it is amazing to see his franchise in the playoffs race after he had packed his bags in April itself seeing the franchise's horrid run in the first half of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be in action against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday at Bengaluru. RCB, however, had a horrid start to their season, winning just one out of their first eight games. However, the month of May marked a comeback for the Red and Gold franchise as they won five games successively to stay alive in the playoffs race. Speaking to JioCinema about RCB's poor first half, Virat said that though he had given up at one point, it felt amazing to see his franchise in the playoffs race at this point, I had packed my bags in April itself, thinking there was no chance of us qualifying. See where we are standing now. It is amazing how this game can turn, and what is the explanation for that? There is no explanation. You are playing instinctively, having fun, and you have come to this situation. One should never assume that something else is going to happen, he added. Speaking on his loyalty to RCB, a franchise with which he has been associated since the league's inception in 2008, Virat said experiencing this longevity with a team is a rarity for a player and not everyone gets this privilege. Things that are special are the connection you have with the fans, the franchise, or your camaraderie with the players. Experiencing these things for such a long time is special in itself. Not everyone gets this. There is always a chance of the franchise not retaining you, or you asking for your release, he said. (ANI)

Kolkata Knight Riders: In an episode of the Knights Dugout, the spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and young breakout star, Suyash Sharma got together to discuss their pasts, respective journeys, and how it was like meeting Shah Rukh Khan for the first time. I was an architect by profession. However, after my business didnt work, I decided to switch my career and play professional cricket. I started playing professionally at the age of 26 and it has worked out well till here, said Chakravarthy He also shared an interesting story about him being in a Tollywood film. Back then, I actually wanted to be an assistant director in that film but ended up being a side actor. But it was huge for me back then to be a part of such a big film, he added. Initially I wasnt sure if I would be picked as a player, but I was confident that I would be picked as a net bowler. On the auction day, my name didnt come up for a long time and Id given all hope. However, It was a pleasant surprise to be picked by KKR. I didnt expect to be picked by them, but the feeling was amazing. I was flooded with messages. I had the confidence in myself that one day I would play at the IPL, but I wasnt expecting it to be this early, said Suyash Sharma. The two spinners might have some healthy competition between them but there is no doubt with regards to who is the best spinner in this KKR side. Currently, Sunil Narine is sitting on 500 wickets in T20 cricket so theres absolutely no competition about who is the best spinner in KKR, said Varun. Varun and Suyash, both speak fondly about their first meeting with SRK, one of the biggest stars in India and also the majority stake owner in the Kolkata-based franchise. In IPL 2020, my first year at KKR, I picked up a fifer against DC in a crucial game. After the game, Shahrukh sir called me and congratulated me on my performance and it felt amazing, added Varun. Shahrukh sir had come to see my debut game for KKR. After the match, he came and spoke to me and told me that he would be praying for me that I play for India soon and it was an incredible moment, concluded Suyash.
