IPL 2024: 'We Should Be Really Proud Of This Journey We Are Having', Says RCB Wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik

After Royal Challengers Bengaluru: After Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) sealed the final playoff berth despite a dismal start of their IPL 2024 campaign, wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik reflected upon the Faf du Plessis-led side's inspirational turnaround in the league and said, people will remember this team for decades. After reeling at the bottom of the table in the first half of the tournament, RCB made a sensational comeback as they won their last six matches to finish their league stage campaign in the final-four with 14 points. In their first eight games, they only won a single game against Punjab Kings. Speaking in the RCB dressing room after the win, Karthik said the players should be proud of them for putting up a competitive show in the latter stage of the cash-rich league. We should be really proud of this journey we are having. People will always remember certain journeys. The way we have come back after eight games, we needed to win six, people will remember this team, Karthik told the RCB dressing room. Every year in this tournament, when you hit the seven-game mark, there will be one or two teams which would have probably won one or two and they will look to us and say, RCB did it. That was special. We are going to try and repeat what RCB did. And that is what we all play cricket for, sport for, where people follow us and believe us that they can do something special. It is hard. It is not going to be easy, I can tell any team that. What we have achieved today is very, very special. We should be really proud of ourselves, winning six out of six, he added. Heading onto the Eliminator in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, Karthik feels RCB have allowed themselves to achieve something so extraordinary that their feats will remain on peoples minds for years. When we get on that flight to Ahmedabad, we have a job to do. We have it within our grasp to do something that people will remember us for many decades. It will be a journey where people will say, wow, that RCB team was special. We are on that journey. We can do something really special if we put our minds to it. Nothing different. Just the same thing, over and over and over again. We will be the team that other teams look at, he said. What made RCBs passage to the playoffs even more special was that it came against the defending champions Chennai, with whom RCB have had a long-standing rivalry. Adding to the challenge was the fact that RCBs batting build-up was interrupted by a rain break, and they had to contend with the turning ball in changed conditions upon resumption. We have to understand the gravity of this game. This has been one of the marquee games for many, many years. It is fair to say they have found a way sometimes to get ahead of us. Coming into this game there was a sense of quiet confidence about us, playing the defending champions, and the way we played we should be really proud of ourselves, right up to the last ball, Karthik said. Hailing RCB as the best fielding unit, Karthik praised the catching heroics of Faf du Plessis and Swapnil Singh. We can proudly say we are the best fielding team in this tournament without a doubt. That catch, Faf, was special. Swapnils catch as well, when it mattered the most, that was serious. And my keeping, that was outstanding! Most importantly as a team we did phenomenally well, staying there in the game, Karthik said, while also praising Yash Dayal on his excellent last over for closing out the game. Karthik further said another team could have settled for a total of 150 considering the changed conditions after the rain, but RCB had overcome them and put on a show for their 12th Man Army. What makes today really special according to me is that a lot of things went against what you would have ideally wanted. For a start, Faf, with the toss. But then we showed why we are so special as a team in this journey. Even though it turned, we had a rain break, we had to go, start again, just the way Virat and Faf played the next three overs made it feel like 140-150 could be a decent total. Most teams would have thought about that and we would have thought about that for a second as well. But after that, to go out there, play the way we did against all odds, taking the game on, and that is something our support staff has been constantly harping on showing that yet again in Bangalore, we all know how proud our franchisee is and how our fans are and we gave them a treat to watch, he concluded.

SC notice to Delhi govt on Sukesh Chandrasekhar's plea to be shifted from Mandoli jail

SC notice to Delhi govt on Sukesh Chandrasekhar's plea to be shifted from Mandoli jail The Supreme Court has sought response from the Delhi government on a plea filed by alleged conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar seeking a direction to authorities to shift him from Mandoli jail to any other prison except those in Punjab and Delhi. A division bench of Justices Bela Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal issued notice to the AAP government. ''Having regard to the allegations made in the writ petition, let the notice be issued to the respondent, returnable on July 19, 2024,'' the bench said. Senior advocate Paramjeet Singh Patwalia, appearing for Chandrasekhar, submitted that the petitioner has been put under surveillance with two cameras in order to pressure him to withdraw his complaints. The lawyer told the court that Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has recommended a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against former minister Satyendra Jain on Chandrasekhar's complaint. ''Please, send me anywhere in the country, except Punjab and Delhi where the Aam Aadmi Party is not there,'' Patwalia submitted. The apex court then issued notice in the matter. The top court had last year dismissed Chandrasekhar and his wife's plea seeking a direction to authorities to shift them from Mandoli jail to a prison outside Delhi over security concerns, saying the writ petition was ''without substance'' and there was ''no justification to grant indulgence'' to the petitioners. Chandrasekhar had accused Jain, who is incarcerated in connection with a money laundering case, of extorting Rs 10 crore ''protection money'' from him. He had also claimed to have contributed about Rs 50 crore to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Chandrasekhar was earlier transferred from Tihar jail to Mandoli Jail after he approached the court claiming threat to his life. The alleged conman and his wife are lodged in jail on charges of alleged money laundering and cheating several people.

Bhuvi key as SRH look for good show vs PBKS

HYDERABAD: Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been the most economical bowler for Sunrisers Hyderabad, so far. With other bowlers struggling to contain runs, the former India pacer stands tall even if his figures too seem to be at the higher end. To start with, Bhuvneshwar has not had the best of the season as he went wicketless in the five of the first 10 games. Bhuvneshwar gradually found his mojo back to not only claim wickets but also bowl miserly. With the team in the play-offs, the bowlers form gains more significance and SRH assistant coach Simon Helmot is confident that his experience will be invaluable. Hes one of the leaders of our attack. Hes been in many playoffs before. We know his experience will be invaluable, Helmot said on the eve of the match. Sanjay Rastogi, childhood coach of the bowler, also echoed the sentiments and said his ward has remained the same even after years of international cricket. No matter which match he plays, be it a practice game or a club match or an international fixture, he always plays with the same intensity. I know the team management decides on the combination and its the prerogative of selectors to pick up the squad but the way Bhuvi has been bowling, I strongly feel he should be there in the team. The team will miss him during the T20 World Cup, Rastogi told this daily. With SRH taking on Punjab Kings in their last league outing on Sunday afternoon here in Hyderabad, Bhuvneshwar will have to be at his best as a win will help the team to finish second on the points table giving them two chances to qualify for the final. Helmot also knows how important Bhuvneshwar is for the team. I know hes a person who Pat (Cummins) will often lean on, especially out in the middle when the pressures on. But Bhuvi as well as a number of our senior players are obviously going to be really important when it comes to big matches, he signed off. Rain threat It rained heavily at Uppal, where the Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium is situated, on Saturday evening. The heavy downpour meant SRH had to cancel its training. There is a forecast of rain for Sunday.

Strong government removed Article 370: PM Modi

CHANDIGARH: Prime Minister Narendra Modi stepped up his attack on the Congress, saying it was his dhakad (strong) government that brought down the wall of Article 370 in Kashmir which is now moving ahead on the path of development. He emphasized the the progress made by his government and praised Haryanas spirit: Haryana means himmat (courage) and hausla (high morale). Like Haryana, Modi has run the government for 10 years in a dhaakad manner, he said. Addressing his first election rally in the state, Modi said the history of Congress was one of betraying Indias forces. He referred to the Jeep scandal, the first scam during the grand old partys rule. Could a weak government have changed the situation in J&K? Modi asked the gathering. Referring to Haryana contributing a sizable number of soldiers in the armed forces, he said when the Congress was in power, mothers in Haryana were a worried lot thinking about their childrens safety. Have such things stopped now or not? he asked the audience. Today, when you see Rafale aircraft in the skies of Ambala, dont you feel proud? he said. I have come to seek your blessings for the next five years, he said. He slammed the Congress and INDIA bloc partners and said when there is a strong government in power, the enemies think hundred times before doing anything. He said Pakistan, which earlier had bombs in its hands, now has a bheekh ka katora (begging bowl) in its hands. When there is a dhakad sarkar, the enemy is terrified, Modi said. Patriotism runs in the veins of Haryana. Therefore, each house in Haryana is saying phir ek baar Modi sarkar. He remarked, Just 17 days are left for June 4. After four phases of elections, the Congress and INDIA bloc and all their friends and parties have been completely destroyed. These people took several steps against the country; however, the people have given them a befitting reply in the battlefield of elections, he said. The Congress and its partners have drawn a blank in the first four phases of polling, he said. We decided to make India self-reliant and we will work 24x7 for 2047, he asserted. The PM said the welfare of farmers was his priority. Congress did nothing for farmers. They purchased crop of Rs 7.5 lakh crore on MSP in 10 years, but Modi in ten years bought Rs 20 lakh crore crop on MSP that is nearly three times, he said. Among those present at the rally were former Haryana chief minister and the BJPs Lok Sabha poll candidate from Karnal, Manohar Lal Khattar, the partys Ambala and Kurukshetra candidates, Banto Kataria and Naveen Jindal. Today, the sugarcane FRP (fair and remunerative price) is around Rs 350 per quintal, whereas it was Rs 210 during the Congress-led government, he said. More than Rs 650 crore, as part of the Kisan Samman Nidhi, were transferred to the bank accounts of farmers hailing from Ambala, Karnal and Kurukshetra, he added. Referring to the AAP-Congress poll alliance in certain states, he said Congress leaders are holding the jhadoo (broomstick, AAPs poll symbol) in Delhi and Haryana, but claiming that jhadoowala chor hai in Punjab, where the two parties are contesting the election against each other. The PM reiterated his claim that the Congress will redistribute the reservation meant for SCs, STs and OBCs on the basis of religion, and alleged that the opposition party wants to snatch the quota for Dalits in jobs and education.

Encroachment, parking mess and civic woes major issues in East Delhi

NEW DELHI: East Delhi is among the countrys larger and more populated Lok Sabha constituencies, comprising parts of the national capital on either side of the Yamuna. The constituency is home to people from different walks of life, students, aspirants, employed, displaced, migrated, slum dwellers and those in unauthorised settlements. There is a large concentrations of residents in areas like Seelampur, Shahdara, Gandhi Nagar, Preet Vihar, among others. Okhla, with pockets of residential complexes, is an industrial area as well. Despite the huge mix of population residing here, almost all of them face a few common issue, civic mismanagement, encroachment and parking mess. Jamuna paar mess While the parking woes is a common in most city neighborhoods, the unplanned township of the East Delhi constituency exacerbates the issue. In fact, it has started impacting the harmony among residents. In East Delhis Laxminagar, the lack of parking spaces is turning neighbours into bitter rivals. Brawls over parking becoming more and more frequent in a locality with a triad of locals, markets and coaching institutes co-habitating, is a major issue this election. Residents says, fearing violence, they have stopped keeping their cars outside. We cannot even take our vehicles outside as there is no place left due to the heavy traffic and poor parking, said 48-year-old Dinesh Gupta 30-year-old Atul Kumar recounted the horror of parking violence he experienced recently. I used to park my bike at a spot for a long time. One day, I saw that someone removed my vehicle and parked his own at the same spot. When I objected to it, he started a fight in public. This is the situation, he said. Similar is the story of 24-year-old Sanjay, who was violently thrashed by a person due to the parking conundrum. The battle AAP MLA from Kondli, Kuldeep Kumar, has been fielded from East Delhi, where he will contest against Harsh Malhotra of the BJP. A drop out of Delhi University, Kumar led the Ambedkar Andolan in East Delhi at the age of 18. In 2020, he was again given an AAP ticket from the Kondli (East) reserved seat in the Delhi assembly election in 2020. He defeated BJPs Raj Kumar by nearly 18,000 votes. Meanwhile, the fresh face of BJP is Harsh Malhotra, one of the three general secretaries of the BJPs Delhi unit. The 58-year-old hails from the Punjabi community, which has a large presence in the East Delhi constituency.

Punjab FC crowned Reliance Foundation Development League 2023-24 champions, beating East Bengal FC in final

Punjab FC crowned Reliance Foundation Development League 2023-24 champions, beating East Bengal FC in final Punjab FC became the Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) 2023-24 champions by defeating East Bengal FC in the final of the National Championship by 3-2 at the Reliance Corporate Park in Mumbai on Saturday night. Punjab FC thus lifted the RFDL trophy to bring a happy end to their unbelievable run in this tournament where they remained unbeaten in the 16 matches that they contested across the Regional Qualifiers, National Group Stage, and the National Championship. They won 14 games and drew only twice in their invincible run in this campaign. The summit clash was a hotly contested one where the momentum of the game swung both ways in an exciting back and forth encounter. Whilst Punjab FC and East Bengal FC scored once each in the first half, the second essay of the match saw the Red & Gold Brigade net first to get a 2-1 lead before the eventual winners got their act together and scored twice to bag the winner courtesy of substitute striker Harmanpreet Singh in the 72nd minute. The Sankarlal Chakraborty-coached side opened their account in the 10th minute with in-form forward Omang Dodum showing remarkable composure inside the box to pounce upon a loose delivery and strike it past East Bengal FC goalkeeper Gourab Shaw. However, the Red & Gold Brigade struck back, thanks to midfielder Guite Vanlalpeka, who bagged the equaliser in the 42nd minute with a comfortable shot from the left side of the 18-yard box. East Bengal FC carried that intensity in the second half, getting a lead in the 50th minute, with defender Joseph Justin nodding home a cross and breaking into a jubilant celebration. However, the tactical acumen of Chakraborty came to their rescue as his timely substitutions ensured that Yendrembam Boby Singh and Harmanpreet, both of whom had come off the bench, ended up scoring once each to help them win the championship. Boby's goal was a sublime one, coming as a culmination to the sustained periods of pressure that Punjab FC were inflicting upon the East Bengal FC backline. Boby dribbled the ball at the edge of the box, beating his markers with his deft touch, before unleashing an emphatic shot that rattled the inside of the net and levelled the scores in the 59th minute. Thirteen minutes later, Harmanpreet laid the final punch by ensuring that his sharp striker instincts took over the proceedings as he slotted the ball into the net after Punjab FC overcrowded the East Bengal FC backline, much to the joy of the Punjab FC players and coaching staff. The entire credit of helping Punjab FC win the RFDL 2023-24 season unbeaten goes to our players. The coaching staff played a supportive role, and our players put in a lot of hard work. We prepared extensively to finally win this championship. It was a fiercely contested final. Usually, the result of a very competitive match comes down to the substitution that each team makes, which helped us today. The youth setup and structure of Punjab FC is absolutely world-class and one of the best in Indian football, Punjab FC coach Sankarlal Chakraborty said after the game. Brief Scores: Punjab FC 3 (Omang Dodum 10', Yendrembam Boby Singh 59', Harmanpreet Singh 72') - 2 East Bengal FC (Guite Vanlalpeka 30', Joseph Justin 50'). (ANI)

Representatives from diplomatic missions at PM's rally in northeast Delhi

Representatives from diplomatic missions at PM's rally in northeast Delhi Representatives from different missions in India on Saturday attended Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally in northeast Delhi ''to experience firsthand the vibrant and dynamic nature of the country's democratic process'', according to the BJP. The party earlier said 25 representatives from 13 diplomatic missions would witness the public meeting, the first by PM Modi in the national during the ongoing Lok Sabha polls. The attendees included those from the diplomatic missions of Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, Japan, Mauritius, Nepal, Russia, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. Braving the Delhi heat, a large number of people gathered at the rally hours before the PM's arrival, with many chanting ''Modi Modi'' and carrying cut-outs of the prime minister. ''Majboori nahi man thaa aane ka (It was not a compulsion, I came because I wished to see Modi). I came here around 2 pm just to see the prime minister,'' Alka Singh, who came from West Delhi, said unmindful of the searing heat '' My family was supportive when I told them that I wanted to attend the rally. The temperature is soaring in the city, but I do not care about it since I was waiting for this movement,'' Singh, a housewife, said. As the PM reached the venue on his chopper after 6 pm, chants of ''Modi, Modi'' and ''Jai Shree Ram'' rent the air. A boy was holding a sketch of Prime Minister Modi and his mother, while a group of women had donned sarees of saffron colour with Bharatiya Janata Party's symbol lotus on them. Prem Nath, who came from Bhajanpura, said, ''I am very excited to see the national leader. I work at a jewellery shop and took off for today just to attend the rally. We all have seen that the current government has removed Article 370. He has done a lot for the nation and yes, we want him to continue for another term to lead the nation.'' Folk artistes from Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Haryana also performed at the rally. Anjita Singh, a resident of Shahdarasid, ''The Modi government has given relief to women in several ways, including providing LPG cylinders under Ujjwala Yojana. ''We see a hope in him and will vote for the saffron party. Our vote will go for nationalism, for Ram Temple, and for unity of the nation,'' Singh said. The rally was held at a Delhi Development Authority (DDA) ground at Pushta number 4 of Yamuna Khadar under the Ghonda assembly seat, which is a part of the Northeast Delhi parliamentary constituency. Security was very tight around the venue with Delhi Police, along with NSG, paramilitary personnel, Delhi Fire Services, NCC and home guards deployed.

Art 370 buried in 'kabristan', my 'dhakad' govt removed hurdle to J and K progress:PM Modi

Art 370 buried in 'kabristan', my 'dhakad' govt removed hurdle to J and K progress:PM Modi Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said Article 370 has been ''buried'' in 'kabristan' (graveyard) and it was his 'dhakad' (strong) government that removed the hurdle to the progress of Jammu and Kashmir. Modi made these remarks at back-to-back poll rallies in Haryana--Gohana(Sonipat) and Ambala--as he stepped up the attack on the Congress, saying the opposition party should forget the ''dream'' of bringing back Article 370 of the Constitution that gave special status to J and K. The contentious constitutional provision was scrapped in August 2019. Addressing a rally at Gohana, his second of the day in Haryana after the one at Ambala, Modi referred to the ongoing Lok Sabha polls as a 'Kurukshetra' (battle) in which ''there is development on one hand and 'vote jihad' on the other''. Striking a chord with the locals, Modi referred to Gohana's famous ''Matu Ram ki jalebi'' to target the opposition INDIA bloc, saying it has a formula of having five prime ministers in five years if they come to power. ''Ask them, is the prime minister's post our Matu Ram ki jalebi?'' he told the crowd. ''In the 2024 'Kurukshetra', there is development on one hand and 'vote jihad' on the other,'' he said. ''I want to ask the people of Haryana... who will win?'' He waited for the crowd to respond before saying, ''Your reply has decided 'Phir Ek Baar','' and the crowd went along to say, ''Modi Sarkar.'' Modi said now the Congress is not even hiding its ''desh-virodhi agenda (anti-national agenda)''. They are saying openly what Modi did in 10 years they will reverse it if they come to power, he said. But their ''dream'' of bringing Article 370 back will never be fulfilled, he added. ''They are saying that we will restore Article 370 in Kashmir... This means once again a free run for terrorism and bloodshed in the Valley.'' ''From the brave land of Haryana, I want to tell those associated with the Congress that only tricolour will fly in Kashmir now. ''Forget the dream of bringing back 370 in Kashmir. And if you try to do it 'lene ke dene pad jayenge' (you will have to pay very heavy price),'' he said. ''Dhara 370 ki deewar hamne kabristan me gaad di hai....(We have buried the wall of Article 370 in kabristan--graveyard).'' Earlier at the Ambala poll rally too, Modi attacked the Congress and said it was his 'dhakad' (strong) government that removed the Article 370 impedient and as a result, Jammu and Kashmir is now moving on the path of progress. The prime minister said a weak government could never have changed the situation in J and K. ''Modi's dhakad government brought down the wall of Article 370 and Kashmir is now moving ahead on the path of development,'' he said. Back at Gohana, Modi said the Congress is out of power for 10 years and therefore they are jittery. They are remembering their old days when the ''shahi parivar'' used to run government with a remote control, he said, alleging all government schemes used to be in the name of only one family and there was corruption too. During the Congress rule, he said, firing at the borders and ceasefire violations used to be in the headlines regularly. But under his government, he said, the situation has changed even though the enemy is the same. It is not Modi, but the power of a vote of people which changed the situation, he added. Modi said he gave the soldiers, including the brave soldiers from Haryana, guarding the borders a free hand. The Congress and INDIA alliance are not able to digest these decisions, Modi said. ''They cannot see this situation of Pakistan. Now people associated with the Congress have become Pakistan's spokespersons and are saying the neighbouring country has nuclear bomb.'' ''Tell me, should India be scared of Pakistan?'' he asked the gathering. ''Ye Modi ka daur hai, hum ghar mein ghus ke marte hai (This is Modi's period, we hit the enemy inside its territory).'' He also targeted the opposition INDIA bloc, calling it 'Jamaat of ghotalebaaz'(gang of the corrupt). ''They want power at any cost. And what is that cost? It is the country's security, stability and respect. And five prime ministers in five years. This is their formula to run the government. ''Will the country benefit, if there is new PM each year. What will they do? Will you allow the country to go back to that period of instability,'' he said. On Ram temple, Modi alleged that the Congress created as many obstacles as it could in order to make those who do 'Vote Jihad' happy. Referring to the AAP-Congress poll alliance in certain states, he said Congress leaders are holding the ''jhadoo'' (broomstick, the Aam Aadmi Party's poll symbol) in Delhi and Haryana, but claiming that ''jhadoowala chor hai'' in Punjab, where the two parties are contesting elections against each other.

Will seek transfer of Kartarpur Sahib from Pakistan, says SAD chief Badal

Will seek transfer of Kartarpur Sahib from Pakistan, says SAD chief Badal The Shiromani Akali Dal on Saturday came out with its poll manifesto and said it will seek transfer of Kartarpur Sahib from Pakistan to India through mutual land exchange between the two countries. After releasing his party's manifesto for the June 1 Lok Sabha polls in Punjab, SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal said his party makes a commitment to renew the fight for the inclusion of Chandigarh and other Punjabi speaking areas left out of the state. ''Chandigarh was categorically declared to belong to Punjab and was to remain a Union Territory only for five years. We will fight Centre's betrayal of Punjab on this with renewed force,'' he said in a statement. Chandigarh is the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana. Describing its manifesto as 'ailan-nama', Badal said the party will use its mandate to seek transfer of Kartarpur Sahib from Pakistan to India through mutual land exchange between the two countries. ''The party also promises to work through the Government of India seeking that the requirement for passports for pilgrims to Kartarpur Sahib be dropped and be replaced with a simple permit system, he added. The Kartarpur corridor links Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan, the final resting place of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev, to Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur district. The party manifesto said with people's mandate, it will move to cancel all decisions and settlements on river waters that have been made without Punjab's concurrence and in violation of the nationally accepted Riparian principle. Badal said his party will seek royalty on its river water given to non-Riparian states and will take all political or legal steps necessary for this. The manifesto demanded opening of Attari and Hussainiwala borders with Pakistan for trade and tourism to usher in economic prosperity. It also promised to secure Special Economic Zones (SEZ) status for the entire border. It also emphasised the need for industry-focused skill education institutes in this belt. Modi says democracy not in danger

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed his commitment to democracy and development while delivering a series of fiery speeches across Delhi and Haryana and launching a vigorous attack on the Opposition over its democracy in danger claim if the BJP-led NDA retains power. He said that though four generations of Congress ruled in Delhi, the Opposition party now is not capable of fighting for even four seats here. He urged voters to reject the INDI alliance, alleging that their manifesto is influenced by the Muslim League. Modi, who spoke at his first rally in Delhis Northeast, had earlier addressed two rallies in Haryanas Ambala and Sonipat. In these speeches, he accused the Opposition of wanting power at any cost, even if it means sacrificing the country's security, stability, and respect. He also praised the bravery of soldiers, noting that Haryana has one of the largest numbers of people in the armed forces. I consider it a blessing from God to be chosen to accelerate our country's development. Sixty years ago when I left my home, I was unaware that I would one day hoist the tricolour at the Red Fort. My family was left behind, but today, 140 crore Indians are my family. I am not living for myself but for your bright future and your children's. You are my heirs, and I work tirelessly day and night just for you, said the PM, recalling how Delhi has witnessed a remarkable transformation. He claimed that in their relentless pursuit of votebanks, the I.N.D.I.A. bloc neglects development and schemes. The I.N.D.I.A. bloc held Delhi captive over the CAA, inciting riots, but their falsehoods stand exposed. Refugees, including Dalit families, now receive Indian citizenship. Their communal reservation agenda defies Baba Saheb Ambedkars principles, said the PM. Representatives from 13 diplomatic missions in India attended the PMs Northeast rally as part of BJPs Know BJP initiative, including delegates from Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, Japan, Mauritius, Nepal, Russia, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. In subsequent rallies in Haryana's Sonipat and Ambala, Modi reiterated his criticism of the Opposition, particularly their alleged attempts to destabilise the country and reverse his government's policies. He declared that the Opposition's dream of reinstating Article 370 in Kashmir would never be realized, asserting that his government had buried it in the kabristan (graveyard). Attacking the I.N.D.I.A. bloc, he said they have a formula of having five prime ministers in five years if they come to power. In the 2024 'kurukshetra', there is development on one hand and 'vote jihad' on the other, he said. I want to ask the people of Haryana... Who will win? He waited for people to respond before saying, Your reply has decided 'Phir Ek Baar', and the crowd responded with, Modi Sarkar. Modi said now the Congress is not even hiding its desh-virodhi agenda (anti-national agenda). They are openly saying they will reverse everything Modi has done in the last 10 years if they come to power. But their dream of bringing Article 370 back will never be fulfilled, he added. On the Opposition naming their grouping I.N.D.I.A., he said, The reality does not change by changing names. This INDI Alliance is a gang of the corrupt (jamaat of ghotalebaaz). They want power at any cost. And what is that cost? It is the country's security, stability, and respect. And five prime ministers in five years. This is their formula to run the government, he said. Will the country benefit if there is a new PM each year? What will they do? Will you allow the country to go back to that period of instability? Referring to Haryana contributing a sizable number of soldiers to the armed forces, Modi said when the Congress was in power, mothers in the state were worried about their children's safety. Have such things stopped now or not? he asked the audience, which responded with an emphatic yes. Patriotism runs in the veins of Haryana, he said, adding that the state understands anti-national forces. Therefore, each house in Haryana is saying - phir ek baar and the crowd responded, saying Modi sarkar. When there is a dhakad government in the country, the enemy thinks 100 times before doing anything, the prime minister said. He said Pakistan, which earlier had bombs in its hands, is now holding a egging bowl. Referring to the AAP-Congress poll alliance in certain states, he said Congress leaders are holding the jhadoo (broomstick, the Aam Aadmi Party's poll symbol) in Delhi and Haryana, but claiming that jhadoowala chor hai in Punjab, where the two parties are contesting the election against each other. The Prime Minister reiterated his claim that the Congress will redistribute the reservation meant for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) on the basis of religion, and alleged that the opposition party wants to snatch the quota for Dalits in jobs and education. The Congress never cared about the small needs of the country's soldiers, including their clothes, shoes, and bullet-proof jackets, he said. He accused the Congress of betraying the ex-servicemen and keeping the One Rank, One Pension issue lingering for four decades.

Country at dangerous crossroads, have to save democracy, constitution: Mann in Haryana

Country at dangerous crossroads, have to save democracy, constitution: Mann in Haryana Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday claimed that India is currently at a ''dangerous crossroads'' and the fight in this Lok Sabha election is to save the nation's democracy and constitution. The senior AAP leader alleged that the BJP leaders are blinded by power. ''They don't realize this country is not anyone's personal property. It belongs to 140 crore people. Our freedom fighters sacrificed their lives for the sake of this country,'' he said. Campaigning for AAP candidate in Haryana's Kurukshetra Lok Sabha seat Sushil Gupta, the Punjab chief minister said the BJP should not be under the illusion that they can break his party by imprisoning Arvind Kejriwal or silence it by freezing its bank accounts. Mann addressed a public meeting in Pundri, an assembly segment under the Kurukshetra Lok Sabha constituency, and also participated in roadshows at Guhla, Pehowa and Radaur. ''Democracy and constitution are in danger and we have to save it,'' he asserted. Claiming that the ongoing Lok Sabha poll is about saving the country which ''stands at a dangerous crossroads'', Mann said, ''The country is at a point where it will either head towards dictatorship or have democratically elected leaders who work according to the people's wishes.'' ''The country will either fall into the hands of a party that wants to abolish the Constitution or into the hands of parties that want the country to progress,'' Mann said. He claimed that after the first four phases of the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP leaders have realised that neither they are going to achieve its poll slogan of winning more than 400 seats, nor are they even retaining power at the Centre. ''When PM Modi realised that he was losing, he started giving threatening speeches,'' Mann said. Voting in 10 Lok Sabha seats of Haryana will be held in the sixth phase on May 25.

Performance is my only currency, I don''t need anyone''s approval or assurance: Virat Kohli

Performance is my only currency, I don''t need anyone''s approval or assurance: Virat Kohli Virat Kohli says he doesn't need either approval or assurance from anyone on his capability as India's premier batter responded to the criticism and debate over his strike rate, asserting that he knows what he can do on the ground. While Kohli has led the batting charts this year in the IPL, his strike rate has also attracted criticism which also includes comments from legendary India batter and former captain Sunil Gavaskar. (I) dont need to react. I know what I can do on ground. I dont need to tell anyone what kind of player I am or what my ability is,'' Kohli said in a recent video released ahead of RCB's crucial IPL encounter against Chennai Super Kings when asked how he deals with external noise. ''Ive never asked anyone how to win a match. Ive learnt this by figuring it out myself in the middle of the ground by failing from experience.'' ''Its not a by-chance thing when you are repeatedly winning matches for the team. For someone to see and analyse a moment and for another player to experience that moment in the middle are two completely different things,'' he added. Kohli said he does not believe in asking someone to stop saying certain things about him. ''I have never felt that I should go and tell someone not to say certain things about me. I know what I can do out there. I dont need anyones approval, or assurance that I played well. I dont need these things. ''I have learnt this from my father very early on. I could have played for the state very early in my career through other means, but my father said only if youre capable you will make it. Performance is my only currency,'' he said. Meanwhile, echoing India skipper Rohit Sharma's sentiments over the impact player rule in IPL, Kohli said it is ''disrupting the balance'' of the game. The mid-innings substitution rule, adopted last IPL, has sparked a row with Rohit expressing his displeasure in a podcast last month. Kohli has urged for a rethink of the rule. ''I agree with Rohit. Entertainment is one aspect of the game but there is no balance,'' Kohli said on Jio Cinema. ''I think it has disrupted the balance and a lot of people are feeling this way, not just me,'' he said. Rohit in the podcast had said, ''I'm not a big fan... It's going to hold back all-rounders. Cricket is played by 11, not 12 (players).'' Punjab Kings set the record for the highest successful chase in T20 history when they overhauled Kolkata Knight Riders' 262 with eight balls to spare. Sunrisers Hyderabad also smashed the record for the highest-ever total in franchise cricket by posting 287/3 against RCB. This edition alone has witnessed eight 250-plus totals and Kohli felt the bowlers' pain. ''Bowlers are feeling like what they should do,'' Kohli said. ''I have never experienced anything like it where bowlers think they will concede four or a six on every ball. Not every team has a (Jasprit) Bumrah or the mystery of Rashid Khan,'' he said. ''With one extra batter, there is a reason I am playing with 200-plus strike rate in the powerplays. I know there is a batsman waiting at No 8 as well. We are playing a high level of cricket and it should not be that dominant in my opinion. There is a beauty about having an equal balance between bat and ball,'' Kohli added. Earlier this month, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said the rule was implemented as a 'test case' and that it also allows two Indian players with opportunities to play in a game. He also said the board and all key stakeholders would deliberate over its continuity. ''I am sure Jay (Shah) bhai has mentioned it already that they will review it and I am sure that they will come to a conclusion which brings the game into balance,'' said Kohli. ''As a batsman, I can say this rule is good but the match should be exciting. Only fours and sixes are not exciting in cricket. Exciting is that you can defend 160 as well, Kohli said.

Modi's 'dhakad' government brought down wall of Article 370: PM in Ambala

Modi's 'dhakad' government brought down wall of Article 370: PM in Ambala Prime Minister Narendra Modi sharpened his attack on the Congress on Saturday and said it was his ''dhakad'' (strong) government that brought down the wall of Article 370 and as a result, Jammu and Kashmir is now moving ahead on the path of progress. Tearing into the Congress, Modi said its history has been of betraying India's forces and soldiers. ''Their first scam was in the (armed) forces,'' the prime minister said, in an apparent reference to the ''Jeep scandal'', without naming it. Modi was addressing his first Lok Sabha poll rally in Haryana. Later, he addressed another rally in Sonipat's Gohana. ''The Congress maintained its track record with new scams till it was in power at the Centre. Be it the Bofors scam, the submarine scam, the helicopter scam -- the Congress used to keep the forces weak. Do you know why? So that in the name of procuring arms from abroad, it could earn huge sums,'' he alleged. Referring to Haryana contributing a sizable number of soldiers in the armed forces, Modi said when the Congress was in power, mothers in the state were a worried lot thinking about their children's safety. ''Have such things stopped now or not?'' he asked the audience that responded with an emphatic ''yes''. On Jammu and Kashmir, the prime minister said a weak government could never have changed the situation in the region. ''Modi's dhakad government brought down the wall of Article 370 and Kashmir is now moving ahead on the path of progress,'' he said. In August 2019, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre abrogated the provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution that had bestowed special rights on Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the erstwhile state into Union territories. Modi asserted that the welfare of farmers is his priority and said the previous Congress-led government at the Centre spent Rs 7.5 lakh crore to procure foodgrains at the minimum support price (MSP) in 10 years, whereas the current regime's procurement of crops at the MSP was for Rs 20 lakh crore. He also accused the Congress of cheating sugarcane farmers. ''When we came to power, their arrears had run up to Rs 60,000 crore. This year alone, we paid Rs 1.14 lakh crore,'' Modi said. Referring to the AAP-Congress poll alliance in certain states, he said Congress leaders are holding the ''jhadoo'' (broomstick, the Aam Aadmi Party's poll symbol) in Delhi and Haryana, but claiming that ''jhadoowala chor hai'' in Punjab, where the two parties are contesting the election against each other. The prime minister reiterated his claim that the Congress will redistribute the reservation meant for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) on the basis of religion, and alleged that the opposition party wants to snatch the quota for Dalits in jobs and education. ''The Congress has nothing to do with women, farmers and youngsters. For the Congress, its vote bank is everything,'' he said. He also slammed the opposition party for saying it will scrap the Citizenship (Amendment) Act if it comes to power. Seeking to strike an emotional chord with Sikhs, Modi said it was his government that brought the ''saroops'' of the Guru Granth Sahib with full respect from Afghanistan. He said it was his government that started observing ''Vir Bal Diwas'' to commemorate the martyrdom of the sons of 10th Sikh Guru Gobind Singh. Modi said the Ram temple in Ayodhya was built after a 500-year wait. ''The entire country is happy, but Congress leaders utter insulting words about the temple,'' he said. The prime minister said only 17 days are left for June 4, when the Lok Sabha poll results will be announced. The Congress and its partners in the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) have drawn a blank in the first four phases of polling, he claimed. ''When there is a dhakad government in the country, the enemy thinks 100 times before doing anything,'' Modi said. He said Pakistan, which earlier had bombs in its hands, is now holding on to a ''begging bowl''. The Congress never cared about the small needs of the country's soldiers, including their clothes, shoes and bullet-proof jackets, he said. ''India is now selling to other countries weapons that it used to buy from them,'' the prime minister said. He accused the Congress of betraying the ex-servicemen and keeping the ''One Rank, One Pension'' issue lingering for four decades, and said it was his government that fulfilled the promise made to them. India has a lot to offer to the world in the field of nutrition, Modi said, adding that he wants to take the ''jowar'' and ''bajra'' grown by the farmers of Haryana to the world. Voting for the 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana will be held in the sixth phase of the seven-phase election on May 25. Among those present at the Ambala rally were former Haryana chief minister and the BJP's Lok Sabha poll candidate from Karnal, Manohar Lal Khattar, the party's Ambala and Kurukshetra candidates, Banto Kataria and Naveen Jindal. Earlier, Modi paid tributes to former Union minister Rattan Lal Kataria. Saturday marked the death anniversary of Kataria, who represented Ambala in the Lok Sabha. His wife Banto Kataria is the BJP's Lok Sabha poll candidate from the seat this time.

According to Rescue 1122, the vehicle was coming from the Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province to the Khushab district of Punjab when the accident occurred. The incident took place in the Khushab district of the central Punjab province. The mini-truck, while negotiating a turn, skidded off the road and fell into a ravine at Pench Pir area of Khushab, some 250 kilometres from Lahore. ''As many as 14 people, including five children, died on the spot. Twelve injured have been shifted to a hospital where their condition is stated to be critical, an official said. Rescue personnel provided on-site medical aid to four people with minor injuries. The other eight were rushed to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Naushera with serious injuries. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed her grief over the loss of lives in the accident and directed the authorities to provide the injured with the best treatment facilities. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed heartfelt grief over the accident and extended his condolences to the families of the deceased. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. Punjab is no stranger to severe road accidents. In August 2023, at least 18 people were killed when a passenger bus caught fire after colliding with a pick-up truck laden with drums of diesel on the motorway near Pindi Bhattian. Road accidents with high fatalities are common in the country due to lax safety measures, poor driver training and decrepit transport infrastructure. Passenger buses and trucks are frequently crammed to capacity and seatbelts are not commonly worn, meaning high death tolls from single-vehicle accidents are common. Rescue officials said the deceased and the injured belonged to an extended family who were coming to Khushab for labour work. According to a couple of eyewitnesses, the driver lost control of the vehicle because of over-speeding.

The bus was carrying around 60 people, all residents of Punjab's Hoshiarpur and Ludhiana, who were returning from pilgrim towns of Mathura and Vrindavan. All of them are relatives, the police said. According to the complaint filed by 60-year-old Rakesh Kumar, resident of Vasant Vihar, GT Road, Bhogpur in Punjab's Jalandhar, he along with his family members left for a religious trip in a tourist bus on May 10. There were about 60 of us in the bus, including about 35 women, 21 men and four children, beside the bus driver and conductors, he said. We were on our way back home from Vrindavan on Friday night when the bus suddenly caught fire near Dhulavat village on KMP Expressway, Kumar said. ''Seeing the smoke, we told the bus driver to pull over to the side but he did not stop the bus. Later, due to heavy smoke, he stopped the bus and by then the fire had spread inside the bus. I and many other people saved our lives by jumping out of the bus and some local people took out some other passengers from the bus and admitted them to different hospitals,'' he said. ''About nine passengers were burnt alive in this accident. Many people also got injured and all our money, jewellery and other belongings were burnt to ashes. This accident was caused due to the careless driving of the bus driver,'' Kumar alleged in his complaint. Following the complaint, an FIR was registered against the bus driver under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 304A (death due to negligence), 427 (causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Sadar Tauru police station on Saturday, the police said. ''FIR has been registered and we are trying to nab the accused bus driver. The postmortem of the bodies is being conducted,'' Inspector Jitendra Kumar, Station House Officer, Sadar Tauru, said.

Amethi: Priyanka Gandhi holds roadshow in support of Kishori Lal Sharma

Amethi: Priyanka Gandhi holds roadshow in support of Kishori Lal Sharma Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra held a roadshow in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh on Saturday in support of long-time Gandhi family loyalist, KL Sharma who is pitted against Rahul Gandhi's slayer in last Lok Sabha polls, BJP's Smriti Irani. Both Gandhi and Sharma were seated on the roof of a vehicle. They were waving to the people. A large number of people had gathered for the roadshow, along with Congress party flag and posters of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Samajwadi party chief Akhilesh Yadav. Earlier in the day, Kishori Lal Sharma exuded confidence in coming out victorious against Union Minister Smriti Irani. Not contesting to lose. I have faith in the alliance, Sharma said in an interview to ANI. He said that the Amethi constituency was developed by the Gandhi family and urged voters to vote for the INDIA bloc based on their development work. The Gandhi family developed this constituency. Vote for us based on our development work and our (the Gandhi family's) legacy. Vote for them (BJP) for development work they have done, he said. I am a soldier of the party and abiding by the party's decision. Raebareli and Amethi are considered constituencies of the Gandhi family. So, Rahul ji is contesting from Raebareli and I am fighting from here, the Congress leader added. Kishori Lal Sharma, a close associate and loyalist of the Gandhi family, is originally from Punjab's Ludhiana. He has been working for the Congress Party in Amethi for years. Earlier on Friday, Rahul Gandhi and SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav attended a joint public rally in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi to campaign for Congress and INDIA bloc candidate KL Sharma. I came here for the first time 42 years ago with my father (Rajiv Gandhi). Whatever I have learned about politics, it has been taught to me by the Amethi public. At that time, there were no roads and no development. And I have witnessed the relationship of love between the people here and my father, the Congress leader said. And that is also (my style) of politics. So, you do not think that I am contesting from Rae Bareli... I was, am and will belong to the Amethi, he added. In 2019, Smriti Irani ended Gandhi family's stint on the seat of Amethi by defeating Rahul Gandhi by over 55,000 votes. Amethi, the most-watched seat in the fifth phase, will go to the polls on May 20. The results will be announced on June 4. The Amethi seat comprises five assembly segments, including Tiloi, Salon, Jagdishpur, Gauriganj, and Amethi. The constituency is a general seat. Polling for 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh is being held across all seven phases. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4. (ANI)
