IPL 2024: Sunrisers Hyderabad qualify for play-offs after rain washes out match against Gujarat Titans

HYDERABAD: Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday qualified for the Indian Premier League play-offs after rain washed out their IPL match against Gujarat Titans here without a ball being bowled. SRH thus became the third team to make the cut after Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals who are currently occupying the top two places in the standings. The Sunrisers received one point to take their tally to 15 points with one match to go. They will face Punjab Kings, who have already been eliminated, on May 19 in their last league assignment. GT, the last year's runners-up and 2022 champions, were knocked out of the play-off race after their previous match was also abandoned due to rain. They thus end the season with 12 points from 14 matches. The toss didn't happen at the scheduled time of 7 pm due to rain and wet outfield. The rain intensified before settling into a steady shower as the covers and outfield stayed covered. The cut-off time for a five-over game was 10:56 PM, which meant the drizzle needed to stop for mop-up to begin by around 10:15pm but with rain showing no signs of abating, the official decided to abandon the match. It is the second game to be called off in this IPL, because of rain and wet outfield. Four teams -- Chennai Super Kings (14), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (12), Delhi Capitals (14) and Lucknow Super Giants (12) -- are still in fray for the battle for the last spot. If LSG win against Mumbai Indians on Friday, they will move to 14 points to stay mathematically alive but CSK will seal the spot if they beat RCB or the game is washed out on Saturday. If RCB beat CSK by at least 18 runs or 11 balls to spare then they will grab the fourth available spot on the basis of net run-rate as they would be on 14 points, same as DC, CSK and LSG (if they win).

IPL 2024: Sunrisers Hyderabad Qualify For Playoffs After Rain Washes Out Game Against Gujarat Titans

Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium: Pat Cummins-led Sunrisers Hyderabad have become the third team after Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals to secure a spot in the IPL 2024 playoffs after rain washed out their clash against Gujarat Titans at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Thursday. Due to the match being called off without a ball being bowled, both SRH and GT now share a point each. With SRHs tally now at 15 points, it means they have now qualified for the playoffs. They now need to beat Punjab Kings on Sunday and hope for Rajasthan Royals to lose to Kolkata Knight Riders to have a shot at top two finish. SRH getting into playoffs means Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants will get knocked out of race to playoffs. It also means the last playoffs spot will be decided by the all-important clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday. Hours before the start of play in Hyderabad, it began to rain in the city. A post on social media platform X from Director Of Enforcement, Vigilance and Disaster Management of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation said: Heavy rainfall is expected today in Hyderabad city. Till 6pm there is a break in rainfall today and may resume after 6pm. Citizens may plan their travel accordingly. Visuals from the ground showed the playing area being under blue covers and tyres kept on the partition areas, with soggy patches already forming in the outfield areas which havent been covered. With more slightly dark clouds over the ground, the chances of a game went bleak till 7:15pm, when covers began to come off and super soppers working relentlessly. At 7:45pm, it was announced that toss would happen at 8pm and match would begin from 8:15pm. But eight minutes before toss, drizzle was back, so as the covers. With the drizzle turning into a heavy downpour and showing no signs of easing, it became increasingly apparent that the match would be called off. On-field umpires Nand Kishore and Virender Sharma, holding umbrellas in their hand, were involved in a discussion with the ground-staff around 10pm to assess if there was time in hand to have the ground ready for a five-over shootout. Eleven minutes later, the umpires called up captains and hands were shakes for the game to be officially called off due to rain. GT also became the first team in IPL to have back-to-back abandoned matches without a single ball bowled, in what was also a gloomy end to their IPL 2024 season. The Shubman Gill-led side were to wear the lavender jersey to support cancer awareness, but didnt get the chance to do so due to rain.

IPL 2024: Toss For Sunrisers Hyderabad-Gujarat Titans Game Delayed Due To Rain

Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium: The toss for match 66 of IPL 2024 between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans has been delayed due to rain at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Thursday. SRH are currently fourth in the IPL 2024 points table with 14 points from 12 matches so far and are back in the competition after a weeks break. They need to win their remaining two matches to enter the playoffs. A washout against GT on Thursday would also help SRH as they would get to 15 points, which is enough to assure them for a playoffs spot. Meanwhile, GT are already out of the race for the IPL 2024 playoffs, after amassing just 11 points from their 13 games so far and are playing their last game of the competition. Hours before the start of play in Hyderabad, it began to rain in the city. A post on social media platform X from the Director Of Enforcement, Vigilance and Disaster Management of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation said: Heavy rainfall is expected today in Hyderabad city. Visuals from the ground showed the playing area being under blue covers and tyres kept on the partition areas, with soggy patches already forming in the outfield areas which havent been covered. With more slightly dark clouds over the ground, it remains to be seen if the match will happen with reduced overs or not.

IPL 2024: Bowling key as Sunrisers Hyderabad eye play-off berth

HYDERABAD: Sunrisers Hyderabad batters seem on a mission every time they take the field this IPL. Be it setting the biggest IPL totals, not once but twice, or posting the highest playoff score or chasing down a target above 160 under 10 overs. Their openers - Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma - have plundered every bowling unit for runs while scoring at a strike rate of more than 200. Other batters like Heinrich Klaasen, Aiden Markram and Nitish Kumar Reddy have contributed quick runs to make even world-class bowlers look ordinary. Despite the rampaging form of their batters, the Hyderabad franchise is fourth on the points table managing to win only seven out of 12 matches. With two matches in hand, the 2016 champions have a good chance of qualifying for the play-offs but it's easier said than done unless their bowlers also come to the party regularly. It's not that the bowling unit, led by skipper Pat Cummins, has not contributed to the team's cause. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan along with all-rounder Reddy and spinners Shahbaz Ahmed and Mayank Markande have proved more than handy at times but they also fell short on occasions when they were expected to contain runs and choke the opposition. One look at the tournament statistics till the contest between Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday, it can be surmised that the SRH bowlers have to pull up their socks if the team wishes to enter the last-four stage. Till Tuesday, only two teams have conceded more than 10 runs per over during the entirety of the tournament with Hyderabad bowlers sitting at the top (economy of 10.12) followed by Delhi Capitals (10.10). Reel cricket: How fan-edited videos are dominating social media after every IPL game Similarly, the SRH bowling in death overs (17-20) is also a cause of concern. To their relief, Delhi are at the top of table as far as conceding most runs in the death overs is concerned with an economy rate of 13.37. Hyderabad are second (12.66). In this phase of the game, the SRH bowlers have given away 553 runs off 262 balls in 12 innings. They conceded 55 fours and 25 sixes while returning with 16 wickets. Only three teams have claimed less than 20 wickets in their matches so far between 17 to 20 overs with LSG and Royal Challengers Bengaluru being the other two sides. Simon Helmot, SRH assistant coach, however, said there is no issue with the bowling unit and it's getting better with each passing day. I don't think there is any issue with it. It's just the challenging situations they have faced whether it's opponents of fairly flat tracks, Helmot said during the pre-match press conference on the eve of the SRH match against Gujarat Titans here at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad. The assistant coach cited bowlers' performance in the team's last outing against Lucknow wherein the opponents were restricted to 165/4 and said the team was great with bowling changes and assessment of the situation. Most importantly we have only got better as the season progressed and I hope it continues. Given the situation, Cummins, the bowler, has to lead by example when his team play against Gujarat. Bowlers need to start from where they left against LSG as their next opponents are already out of the tournament and will have nothing to lose when they play their last match of this IPL season. Besides, Gujarat skipper Shubman Gill must be hurting from his team's early exit from the tournament. He along with fellow opener B Sai Sudharsan have already cracked a century each against Chennai Super Kings before rain abandoned GT's next match against table topper Kolkata Knight Riders. For SRH, the trick is to concede fewer runs and allow the batters to do what they have been doing throughout the season- taking opposition to the cleaners. If the bowlers manage to do that in the powerplay and continue the good work in death overs, SRH can inch closer to the play-off berth by adding two more points to their tally.

IPL 2024: Sunrisers Look to Seal Playoff Berth; GT Aim to End Campaign On High

Hyderabad: Masters of their own fate right now despite being erratic, Sunrisers Hyderabad will hope their destructive batting line-up delivers when they take on Gujarat Titans in pursuit of a playoffs berth in the Indian Premier League here on Thursday. Another win will be enough for Sunrisers to seal a playoff berth as they need only one point to ensure qualification. But the Pat Cummins-led side will also want to challenge for the top two spots, which is a possibility considering they have one more game after this match and a healthy net run rate of +0.406. SRH have 14 points from 12 matches and can reach a maximum of 18 points, which may be enough to ensure a top-two finish if other results go their way. Not only are the Sunrisers players well-rested ahead of the clash against GT as they got a week off, their morale will also be sky high after notching yet another record-breaking win against Lucknow Super Giants on May 8. If the bowlers did a commendable job to restrict LSG to a blow-par score, the opening duo of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma made a mockery of the hosts by chasing down 166 in just 9.4 overs to notch a 10-wicket win at home. SRH have made a habit of securing unbelievable victories throughout the season but they have also suffered sizeable defeats, including against GT (by 7 wickets) earlier in the competition. The boom or bust approach by the batters has either done exceedingly well or has simply let the side down, including three times in the last five games, where SRH lost to RCB (by 35 runs), CSK (by 78 runs) and MI (by 7 wickets). The 2016 champions would hope Head and Sharma deliver as SRH are heavily dependent on the explosive starts provided by the duo. They will also want to do a better job at re-building their innings, especially while chasing. The likes of Nitish Reddy, Heinrich Klassen and Abdul Samad need to manage that better. On the other hand, the Titans, who have only five wins from 13 games and are on 11 points, are out of the reckoning and will look to end their forgettable campaign on a high. With former skipper Hardik Pandya moving to Mumbai Indians this season, GT struggled to find a replacement for the all-rounder who was key to their title-winning run in 2022 and runners-up finish last year. The absence of pacer Mohammed Shami, who was ruled out of the tournament due to injury, has also hurt them. GT's bowling hasn't been as effective this season, with inconsistent pacers and leaky spinners. Their last match against Kolkata Knight Riders was a washout but the bowlers showed promise by taking three wickets in the first three overs against CSK. Mohit Sharma's variations and knuckle balls were particularly effective, and Rashid Khan's clever bowling was noticeable. They'll hope for an encore. In the batting department, much will depend on skipper Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan, who revelled in the role of an opener. David Miller has looked off-colour this season and his big hits would be crucial to ensure that the side signs off on a positive note. Squads: Sunrisers Hyderabad: Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), Aiden Markram, Abdul Samad, Nitish Reddy, Shahbaz Ahmed, Pat Cummins (c), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat, T Natarajan, Mayank Markande, Umran Malik, Anmolpreet Singh, Glenn Phillips (wk), Rahul Tripathi, Washington Sundar, Upendra Yadav (wk), Jhathavedh Subramanyan, Sanvir Singh, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Marco Jansen, Akash Maharaj Singh, Mayank Agarwal. Gujarat Titans: Shubman Gill (c), David Miller, Matthew Wade, Wriddhiman Saha, Kane Williamson, Abhinav Manohar, B. Sai Sudharsan, Darshan Nalkande, Vijay Shankar, Jayant Yadav, Rahul Tewatia, Noor Ahmad, Sai Kishore, Rashid Khan, Joshua Little, Mohit Sharma, Azmatullah Omarzai, Umesh Yadav, Shahrukh Khan, Sushant Mishra, Kartik Tyagi, Manav Suthar, Spencer Johnson, Sandeep Warrier and BR Sharath. Match starts: 7.30pm.

IPL 2024: Lucknow Super Giants win toss, opt to bat against Sunrisers Hyderabad

IPL 2024: Lucknow Super Giants win toss, opt to bat against Sunrisers Hyderabad KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) won the toss and decided to bat against Pat Cummins' Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 57th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday. The Lucknow-based franchise are coming into this match after conceding a 98-run loss against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Currently, LSG are holding the sixth place on the standings with 12 points. While the Sunrisers were in great form at the start of the tournament, however, they conceded three losses in their previous five matches. In their previous game, Pat Cummins-led SRH suffered a 7-wicket defeat against Mumbai Indians. They are standing in fourth place on the table with 12 points. While speaking at the toss, Cummins accepted that it would be tough to qualify for the playoffs of the tournament. He also confirmed that Vijayakanth Viyaskanth replaced Marco Jansen in the playing eleven. We would have batted as well. But we have won both ways here and hence not too upset. Hard to know (a good score) as it has been pretty high scoring. It is pretty tough (to qualify for the playoffs) and you have to keep winning till the end, we have not nailed it in the last couple of games and it is time to change that. We have a couple of changes - Sanvir comes in for Agarwal and Viyaskanth makes his debut and replaces Marco, Cummins said. While KL Rahul said they have made a few changes in the playing eleven. He confirmed Proteas batter Quinton de kock came back in the playing squad in place of Mohsin Khan. We will bat first. That (the pitch) plus a couple of games that have been played here. It is hard to complete forget how important this game is for both the sides, but we have played enough cricket. We will focus one thing at a time, first bat well and put the runs on the board. Playing at home becomes a difference, but we play so much cricket that we know how the conditions will be. Quinton comes in, Mohsin misses out and there are a few other changes, Rahul said. Lucknow Super Giants (Playing XI): Quinton de Kock, KL Rahul (Wk/C), Marcus Stoinis, Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, Krishnappa Gowtham, Yash Thakur, Ravi Bishnoi, Naveen-ul-Haq. Sunrisers Hyderabad (Playing XI): Travis Head, Nitish Reddy, Heinrich Klaasen (Wk), Abdul Samad, Shahbaz Ahmed, Sanvir Singh, Pat Cummins (C), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, T Natarajan. Suryakumar Yadav's unbeaten 102 leads Mumbai Indians to a crushing win over Sunrisers Hyderabad

Mumbai : Suryakumar Yadav hit an unbeaten 102 to lead Mumbai Indians to a crushing seven-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday as teams jostle for a play-off berth in the IPL. Chasing 174 for victory, Mumbai slipped to 31-3 before Suryakumar put on an unbeaten stand of 143 with Tilak Varma to achieve the target with 16 balls to spare at their home Wankhede Stadium. Suryakumar hit the winning six, which also raised his second IPL ton in 51 balls and comes as a welcome sign for India ahead of the T20 World Cup in June in the West Indies and the United States. However the win for five-time winners Mumbai, placed ninth in the 10-team table, could be late in a tournament fast moving toward its business end. Hyderabad, led by Pat Cummins, stay fourth in the table but their fifth loss and a big one could hurt their play-off chances. Hyderabad need to win two of their remaining three matches to make the play-offs as they remain locked at 12 points with third-placed Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants at fifth. The top four teams will make the play-offs with the final on May 26 in Chennai. Former champions Hyderabad posted 173-8 courtesy of Travis Heads 48 and an unbeaten 17-ball 35 by lower-order batter Cummins after being invited to bat first. The left-handed Head gave the team a brisk start with his 30-ball knock before his departure in the 11th over and Hyderabad lost their way with regular wickets. Skipper Hardik Pandya spinner Piyush Chawla took three wickets each to rattle the opposition middle and lower-order as Hyderabad slipped to 136-8 in 17 overs. But number nine Cummins had other ideas as the Australian Test and ODI captain hit back in the final three overs and put on an unbeaten stand of 37 off 19 balls with Sanvir Singh. The batting effort inspired the team and fast bowlers came roaring to reduce Mumbai to 31-3 including the key wicket of Rohit Sharma, out caught behind for four off Cummins. Suryakumar soon took charge with his attacking batting as he raised his 50 in 30 balls and hammered the opposition bowling with 12 fours and six sixes. The left-handed Varma made 37 and enjoyed Suryakumars blitz from the other end.
