Police seized CCTV DVR from Kejriwal home, planting stories to tarnish party's image: AAP

Police seized CCTV DVR from Kejriwal home, planting stories to tarnish party's image: AAP AAP on Sunday said the Delhi Police has seized the DVR of CCTV cameras installed inside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence in connection with its probe into the ''assault'' on Swati Maliwal and accused the cops of planting stories to tarnish the party's image ahead of the elections. There was no immediate reaction from the Delhi Police. Maliwal, an AAP Rajya Sabha member, has alleged that Kejriwal's aide Bibhav Kumar assaulted her on May 13 when she had gone to the chief minister's residence to meet him. AAP has rubbished her allegations and claimed that Maliwal is acting at the behest of the BJP to frame Kejriwal. Kumar was arrested on Saturday and produced in a court, which remanded him in five-day police custody. Addressing a press conference on Sunday, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj said the police have already seized the DVR (digital video recorder) of CCTV cameras. ''Yesterday (Saturday), they seized the DVR of cameras installed at the entry gates, boundary walls and today (Sunday), they seized the DVR of cameras installed in other parts of the house. The police are planting stories that the CCTV (camera) footage has been deleted but they have already seized it,'' he claimed. Bharadwaj said the CCTV cameras and the footage captured are maintained by the Public Works department and are in its custody. He also raised questions over the sequence of events in the case. ''The call was made by Swati Maliwal on May 13 and, within no time, the image of the daily diary entry in the matter was all over the media. The FIR in the case has been registered under Section 354 (B), which is a sensitive matter that pertains to a woman, but the FIR was circulated everywhere. However, Bibhav Kumar, the accused, and AAP did not have a copy of the FIR,'' he added. The Delhi Police has booked Kumar for molestation and attempted culpable homicide after Maliwal's complaint. Bharadwaj also responded to allegations that the CCTV camera footage has been deleted. ''The incident happened in the drawing room. One usually does not install cameras there. I have never seen a CCTV camera. When a camera is not there, how can its footage be deleted? The police have everything with them and if they would have seen anything they would have shared it with the media,'' the Delhi minister said. ''The police are planting stories at the behest of the BJP to tarnish the image of AAP before the elections,'' he alleged. Polling for Delhi's seven Lok Sabha seats will be held on May 25.

Comedian-turned-heroes fail to tickle funny bone

With comedian-turned-hero Suhass film Prasanna Vadhanam also failing to set cash registers ringing, while another comedian Getup Sreenu is trying to make his mark as hero with his upcoming film Raju Yadav but Telugu audience are in no mood to encourage this new trend of comedian-turned-heros. Earlier, Viva Harshas much-hyped comic-caper Sundaram Master crashed without a trace. The comedian's dream to turn heroes has definitely taken a beating due to numerous flops, says director Teja, who claims that even the general audience are not inclined towards comic-capers these days. We have enough comedy shows like Jabardasth on the small screen besides social media clips and trolls to entertain youngsters. Besides, a few comedians are coming out of Jabardasth but there is no space for all of them as heroes, he adds. Earlier, comedian-turned-actor Suhas scored a hit with Colour Photo but couldnt spin box office magic with his latest film Ambajipeta Marriage Band, although he played an underdog in both the movies. I dont think there is a set rule that a comedian should play an underdog to score at the box office because it all depends on good script and relatable characters. I do agree that they can't play larger-than-life roles like big stars either, he points out. He admits that the trend of comedians playing lead roles is not new, the present wave of comedians appear keen to showcase their acting chops. Legendary comedians like Nagesh, and Brahmanandam and Vadivelu in Kollywood and to some extent even Sunil became heroes after being hailed as star comedians, so these young comedians have to prove their mettle in their own domain before venturing into author-backed roles. With few big stars also doing comedies these days, it is taking the sting out of comedian-turned-heroes' efforts since audiences prefer to pay for stars over others, he points out. Of course, comedians like Sunil delivered hits like Maryadaramana and Poolarangadu. Similarly, Priyadarshi drew crowds for his family drama Balagam and is now awaiting the release of his next film Darling. In between, noted rib-tickler Vennela Kishore failed to impress with 'Chari 111'. I do agree that every actor worth his salt would like to play a protagonist in the film after playing sidekick to a hero in many films. No doubt, they draw whistles for their jokes in star films, but when doing a solo hero film, they are unable to get a similar response. In fact, many comedians would be surprised about not drawing crowds without realising that the original crowd puller for star films was a big hero but now he has to pull in crowds and that is becoming a difficult task with the comedy genre on the downslide. I wish they become numero uno comedians before moving to take up bigger roles, Teja concludes.

GDP growth likely to be 6.7 percent in Q4; 7 pc in FY24: Ind-RA

Government changed the methodology as well as the base year for GDP calculations (Representational Image) Government changed the methodology as well as the base year for GDP calculations (Representational Image) New Delhi: India Ratings and Research expects the country's GDP growth rate for the March quarter at 6.7 per cent and around 6.9-7 per cent for the 2023-24 fiscal, its principal economist Sunil Kumar Sinha said. The GDP numbers for the fourth quarter (January-March 2024) and the provisional estimates for the 2023-24 fiscal are scheduled to be released by the government on May 31. The Indian economy grew 8.2 per cent in the June quarter, 8.1 per cent in the September quarter and 8.4 per cent in the December quarter of 2023-24. We are expecting the fourth quarter growth to be 6.7 per cent and the overall GDP growth for FY24 to be around 6.9-7 per cent, Sinha told PTI Videos in an interview. He said the growth rate in the first two quarters benefited from a low base, though the 8.4 per cent growth rate in the third (October-December 2023) quarter was surprising. When we analyse the data, then what is visible is the wedge between the GVA and GDP. A large impetus to Q3 GDP has come from higher tax collection, but this phenomenon is unlikely to be repeated in the fourth quarter. The wedge between the GDP and GVA is unlikely to be repeated in the fourth quarter, he noted. While the gross value added (GVA) was 6.5 per cent in the third quarter, the GDP growth rate stood at 8.4 per cent. This wedge is on account of higher taxes collected during the quarter. In the first quarter, the GVA and GDP growth was 8.2 per cent, while in the second quarter, the GVA was 7.7 per cent and GDP 8.1 per cent. GDP is the total value of goods and services produced in a given period. GVA is GDP minus net taxes (gross tax collection minus subsidy). The Reserve Bank, in its monetary policy review in April, projected GDP growth for 2023-24 at 7 per cent. As regards the economic growth in the current fiscal, Sinha said the GDP is expected to expand at 7.1 per cent. Even if we set aside the tax component, the momentum witnessed in the first and second quarters has continued in the subsequent quarters, and the likelihood is that momentum will continue in FY25, he added. The services sector, he said, will continue the momentum, led by construction and electricity, while mining and industrial output will be laggard.

Supreme Court to Hear Plea on Controversial New Criminal Laws Tomorrow

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will examine a petition challenging three new criminal laws on Monday. Justices Bela M. Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal are expected to hear the case. Last December, the Lok Sabha passed three significant bills: the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Act. These new laws, which received presidential assent on December 25, are set to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act. Advocate Vishal Tiwari has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to halt the implementation of these laws. He argues that they were passed without proper parliamentary debate due to the suspension of many opposition members. Tiwari's plea calls for an expert committee to evaluate the new laws' viability. The new laws are more oppressive, establishing a police state that infringes on fundamental rights, the plea claims. Previously, under British rule, police custody was limited to 15 days. Extending this to 90 days or more opens the door to potential police abuse. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita introduces new definitions for crimes like secession, armed rebellion, and activities threatening national unity. Anyone found guilty of these offenses could face life imprisonment or up to seven years in jail, along with fines. Previously, IPC Section 124A covered sedition, with penalties including life imprisonment or a three-year term. The new laws rename sedition from Rajdroh (rebellion against the ruler) to Deshdroh (rebellion against the nation). For the first time, the term terrorism is explicitly defined in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which was not included in the IPC. The new laws also enhance the powers of magistrates to impose fines and expand the criteria for declaring someone a proclaimed offender. The Supreme Court's decision on this matter will have significant implications for India's criminal justice system. PM Modi Accuses Congress and JMM of Corruption and Public Wealth Theft

Jamshedpur:Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a fresh attack on the Congress and its ally, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), accusing them of hindering development and aiming to steal public wealth. Speaking at a large rally in Jamshedpur, PM Modi criticized the Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly planning a nationwide wealth redistribution scheme if elected. He claimed their true intention is to misappropriate public assets. The Congress and JMM don't understand development. They spread lies and have a hidden agenda to seize the assets of the poor under the guise of wealth redistribution. They want to take away the reservations guaranteed for SCs, STs, and OBCs. They insult me daily but offer no real solutions. Their true motives are now clear to the nation, Modi stated. He referred to a recent cash recovery from a residence linked to Congress leader Alamgir Alam's aide, accusing the Congress and JMM of consistently exploiting Jharkhand. The Congress and JMM have filled their coffers with black money by robbing the poor. They have plundered Jharkhand at every chance. Congress is synonymous with corruption. When people think of Jharkhand now, they visualize stacks of cash, Modi added. Modi vowed to reclaim and return all stolen money to the public. The JMM has committed land scams, taking land from poor tribals and the army. The money recovered from their homes is yours. I'm retrieving it to return to you, not to fill government coffers. This is my promise, he affirmed. The Prime Minister also criticized Rahul Gandhi for opposing business leaders and investors, labeling them as enemies of the state. The Congress attacks our entrepreneurs and wealth creators. Their leaders condemn businesses that don't support them financially, ignoring the importance of industries and youth welfare, Modi asserted. He added, Rahul Gandhi opposes business houses and investors, discouraging investment in states governed by the Congress. Investors tell me they avoid these states due to the hostile attitude towards wealth creation. They are insulted and mistreated. Investors fear that Rahuls negative views influence his allies too. PM Modi further accused Congress of prioritizing family interests over public service. Rahul fled Wayanad to contest in Raebareli, invoking its connection to his mother. Even a child knows not to call his school his father's just because he studied there. Jharkhand must reject parties that serve only their families, he said. In the upcoming elections, Raebareli is a key battleground. Rahul Gandhi faces a strong challenge from BJP's Dinesh Pratap Singh, with the BJP aiming to take over this Congress stronghold. Sonia Gandhi, who has represented Raebareli since 2004, vacated the seat earlier this year. Bevy of high-profile candidates to test their luck in 7 south Bengal LS seats on Monday

Bevy of high-profile candidates to test their luck in 7 south Bengal LS seats on Monday A bevy of high-profile candidates, from ministers to actors, would test their luck in the hustings on Monday as seven Lok Sabha constituencies in the southern part of West Bengal go for polls in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections. A total of 1,25,23,702 voters 63,51,320 men, 61,72,034 women and 348 third-genders are eligible to exercise their franchise in 13,481 polling stations across the seven constituencies. The EC has identified over 57 per cent of the polling booths as sensitive and decided to deploy over 60,000 central forces besides 29,172 state police personnel for this phase, according to an official. Reopening of closed industries, poor health of jute mills and demand for jobs are the main demands of the electorate in Howrah, Hooghly, Serampore and Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituencies, situated on both sides of the banks of River Hooghly. The Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) is the bone of contention between the BJP and the TMC in Bangladesh-bordering Bangaon constituency, where winning the hearts of the Matua community, many of whom migrated from the neighbouring country, holds the key to ensuring a victory in the polls. Uluberia and Arambagh are the other two constituencies in Bengal which are going to polls on Monday. With the elections having come down to the high-strung constituencies in south Bengal in the fifth phase, the Election Commission has declared over 57 per cent booths as sensitive in Monday's polls, deploying the maximum number of security personnel among the first five phases to ensure peaceful polling. BJP's Arjun Singh, who has been in and out of the saffron party and the Trinamool Congress on four occasions in the last five years, is taking on West Bengal minister Partha Bhowmick in Barrackpore in a bid to retain the seat he won in 2019. Actor Rachana Banerjee has been fielded by the TMC to stop BJP's actor candidate Locket Chatterjee from winning for a straight second term from Hooghly. In Serampore, BJP's Kabir Shankar Bose and CPI(M)'s student leader Dipsita Dhar are taking on TMC's sitting MP Kalyan Banerjee, who is contesting to win this seat for a fourth consecutive term. Union Minister of State Shantanu Thakur of BJP is fighting to retain the Bangaon seat against TMC's Biswajit Das, who had switched to the Mamata Banerjee-led party after winning the 2021 assembly polls as a saffron party candidate from Bagdah, which is situated within this Lok Sabha constituency. In Howrah, once known as the Sheffield of the East for its numerous factories, footballer-turned-politician Prasun Banerjee is seeking to retain the seat for a third time on a TMC ticket. He is being given a tough fight by BJP's Rathin Chakraborty, a former TMC leader and mayor of Howrah Municipal Corporation, apart from CPI(M)'s lawyer candidate Sabyasachi Chatterjee. BJP's Arun Uday Pal Chaudhary is fighting to stop TMC's Sajda Ahmed from winning a third consecutive term in the Uluberia constituency. In Arambagh, TMC has put up Mitali Bag, replacing its two-term MP Aparupa Poddar, to take on BJP's Arup Kanti Digar and CPI(M)'s Biplab Kanti Moitra.

Rayudu doesn't feel Dhoni has played his last match, puts ball in BCCI's court

New Delhi: Former India batter Ambati Rayudu doesn't feel MS Dhoni has played his last match in the IPL and wants the BCCI to continue with the contentious impact player rule as it could help the long-serving legend to keep going in top-flight cricket.Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings bowed out of this edition of the Indian Premier League following a 27-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a much-anticipated southern derby in Bengaluru on Saturday. The five-time defending champions needed 17 in the final over to qualify for the playoffs on better net run rate, but bowler Yash Dayal, after being hit for monstrous six by Dhoni, held his nerves to help RCB prevail. Later, speaking on Star Sports Cricket Live, Rayudu said, I don't think this is his last game. I just don't see him wanting to end on this note. Even as the RCB players broke into wild celebrations, Dhoni shook hands with the opposition's reserves and support staff before quietly disappearing into the dressing room. Rayudu said, He looked a little frustrated, even when he got out. That's very unlike MS Dhoni, he just wanted to qualify and finish on a high. But you never know with MS Dhoni, he might come back next year. Rayudu, who played under Dhoni at CSK, brought the BCCI into the picture. ... With the impact player role as well, it gives him the opportunity to be able to come in those last few overs and truly make that impact. BCCI better not remove the impact player role because we still want to see MS Dhoni play. So, it's up to BCCI now. Do we want to see MS Dhoni play or not. While the match ended in agony for Dhoni and Co, RCB continued their revival with a sixth straight win in a row, a remarkable feat that saw them rise from the bottom of the table to make the playoffs. Speaking of Dhoni, former Australian opener Matthew Hayden said, Yeah, I suppose the thing is when you come to the end of your career, whether it is the last part of his career or not, what you don't want to see is diminishing returns as an athlete. Firstly, as a leader, he is The Thala of the Chennai Super Kings. This is telling me that nothing here is about becoming anything else other than first place. He's desperately using his brains, all of that cricket knowledge. And of course, the power is there and that's always been MS Dhoni. He's always hit balls at this stage of an innings. At the front, you can understand how players can hit it. But at the back, it's really hard to hit balls. Dhoni made 25 off 13 balls with the help of three fours and a huge six, showing that he can still send the ball a long, long way.
