Elections to the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra will be held in five phases on April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, and May 20. West Bengal: Fate of several star candidates to be decided Congress' Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, TMC's Shatrughan Sinha, Mahua Moitra and Yusuf Pathan, BJP's SS Ahluwalia and Dilip Ghosh will be among the candidates whose fates will be decided in the EVMs as eight Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal will go to the polls in the fourth phase on Monday. Spread over Murshidabad, Nadia, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman and Birbhum districts, the problems flagged by voters in these constituencies vary from migrant labour, drinking water supply and drying up of industries, while the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) notification is a bone of contention between the TMC and BJP in some places. Polling will be held in Baharampur, Krishnanagar, Ranaghat (SC), Bardhaman Purba (SC), Bardhaman-Durgapur, Asansol, Bolpur (SC) and Birbhum in West Bengal in the fourth round of the Lok Sabha polls. Film star-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha is seeking re-election from Asansol and is pitted against the BJP's veteran leader SS Ahluwalia. In Krishnanagar, the TMC has put up its outspoken leader Mahua Moitra, who was expelled from the 17th Lok Sabha last December, against BJP's Amrita Roy, a member of the Krishnanagar royal family. Former Bengali cine celebrity Satabdi Roy is seeking a fourth term from the Birbhum seat, which is now shorn of its maverick TMC leader Anubrata Mondal, lodged in Tihar jail in connection with an alleged cattle smuggling case. Congress' leader in the outgoing Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, fighting for a sixth consecutive term from Baharampur, is set to see his clout tested in the seat considered his fortress for the last three decades, with the TMC having fielded former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan and the BJP's Nirmal Kumar Saha. BJP's former West Bengal president Dilip Ghosh, whose controversial comments on various issues and against TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee have often made headlines, is contesting from Bardhaman-Durgapur, having been shifted by the saffron party from Kharagpur, where he had won in 2019. Trinamool Congress has put up former Indian cricketer Kirti Azad from the seat, while CPI(M) has fielded Sukriti Ghosal. BJP's Jagannath Sarkar is seeking re-election from Ranaghat constituency, which has a significant Matua population. The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has been a profound issue of debate here between the saffron party and the TMC. TMC announced the candidature of Mukut Mani Adhikari for the seat soon after he joined the party, leaving the BJP, of which he was an MLA from Ranaghat Dakshin assembly segment. Asit Kumar Mal is seeking re-election from Bolpur on a TMC ticket, having been pitted against Priya Saha of BJP and Shyamali Pradhan of the CPI (M). In Bardhaman Purba, TMC fielded psychiatrist Sharmila Sarkar against BJP's folk singer candidate Ashim Kumar Sarkar, who is the saffron party's MLA from Haringhata Assembly segment, and CPI(M)'s Nirav Kha. Jharkhand: Four reserved seats in fray The stage is set for voting in Jharkhand's four Lok Sabha constituenciesSinghbhum, Khunti, Lohardaga and Palamuon Monday amidst heavy security deployments in all polling booths. Of the four Lok Sabha seats, three are reserved for Schedule Tribe (ST), while Palamu is reserved for Schedule Caste (SC) candidates. Interestingly, the number of female voters is higher than the number of male voters in three tribal seats. More than 64.37 lakh electors, including 32.07 lakh female voters, are eligible to exercise their franchise in the four constituencies in the state, an election official said. A total of 45 candidates, including seven from Khunti, 15 from Lohardaga, nine from Palamu and 14 from Singhbhum, are in the poll fray. An interesting fight is likely in all three tribal seats as the JMM-led ruling alliance and the BJP-led opposition in Jharkhand have put all their efforts into galvanising people's support in their favour. In Singhbhum, BJP's Geeta Kora, who had won the seat on Congress ticket in 2019, has locked horns with INDIA bloc's Joba Manjhi, who is a JMM MLA from Manoharpur assembly seat. Khunti is heading for a direct fight between Union Minister and BJP nominee Arjun Munda and the INDIA bloc's Kalicharan Munda. The Lohardaga seat might see a triangular contest after JMM's Bishunpur MLA Chamra Linda filed nomination as an Independent candidate against BJP's Samri Oraon and INDIA bloc's Sukhdeo Bhagat. The Palamu seat is set for a direct fight between the BJP's sitting MP Vishnu Dayal Ram and RJD's Mamta Bhuiyan as INDIA bloc candidate.

He meant to settle things...: AIMIM leader Akhtarul Iman defends Akbaruddin Owaisi's '15-Minute' remark

He meant to settle things...: AIMIM leader Akhtarul Iman defends Akbaruddin Owaisi's '15-Minute' remark In response to AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi's controversial 15-minute remark made in 2013, AIMIM Bihar President Akhtarul Iman defended him, stating that Owaisi intended to resolve tensions between Hindus and Muslims if given 15 minutes. Iman emphasized that Owaisi did not imply violence but rather suggested that removing police presence could enable communities to settle disputes peacefully. Reacting to BJP leader Navneet Rana's response to Owaisi's comment, Imam said, The people of BJP cannot understand anything. Akbaruddin Owaisi did not say that in 15 minutes he would murder someone or burn someone's house, he meant to say that, removing the Police and Hindu-Muslim brothers would settle everything together. Wherever there are clashes it is the police who ignite it BJP Madhya Pradesh State In charge Muralidhar Rao also slammed Owaisi for his remarks and accused the AIMIM of practising the divide and rule policy. AIMIM represents the communal ideology, and they follow the policy of divide and rule. People know the history of MIM. They have never disowned the legacy of Razakars, even today whenever they criticize Hindus, they bring up Hindu deities. The problem is not AIMIM, it is the Congress and BRS who have taken support from MIM, and that is the reason they have supported Muslim reservation, based on religion, Rao said while speaking to ANI. Earlier, while responding to the AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi's statement that they would take them all of '15 minutes' to balance out the Hindu-Muslim ratio in the country, Navneet, who is seeking a fresh term in the Lok Sabha from Amravati, on a BJP ticket this time; hit back at the Owaisi brothers, saying it would take us 15 seconds if the police were removed or made to stand down.Rana was heard saying in a video clip she posted on her X handle, tagging the Owaisi brothers, The younger brother says, 'Remove the police for 15 minutes so that we can show them what we can do'. Owaisi slams Navneets 15 secs remark, says BJP hates Indias diversity

HYDERABAD: Responding to BJP Amravati MP Navneet Ranas 15 seconds remark, AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday said that his party is not scared of her and suggested that Prime Minister Narendra Modi give her an hour if she wants. On Tuesday, addressing a meeting while campaigning for BJP Hyderabad candidate Madhavi Latha, Rana had said that the chote and bade bhai (Owaisi brothers) would not even know where we would send them if police were taken off for just 15 seconds. The younger brother says, remove police for 15 minutes, then well show them what we can do. I want to tell them, dear chote bhai (younger brother, Akbaruddin), that you will take 15 minutes, but it will take us only 15 seconds. If police are taken off for 15 seconds, neither the young nor the old will know where they came from or where they went, Rana said. She was referring to Akbaruddins infamous 15 minutes remark made in 2013. During his campaign on Thursday, the AIMIM chief said: I am asking Modiji to surely give her 15 seconds. What will you do? Aap Ikhlaq, Pehlu Khan, Rakbar aur Mukhtar Ansari jaisa haal karenge? (Will you do the same with us what you did with (Mohammed) Akhlaq, Pehlu Khan, Rakbar (Khan) and Mukhtar Ansari?) Not just 15 seconds but give her one hour. We are ready. If someone is making an open call for it, then so be it. PM is yours, RSS is yours. Everything is yours. Do it. Who is stopping you? Tell us where we have to come, we will be there, he said. Referring to Rana alleging that a vote for the AIMIM and Congress will directly go to Pakistan, Owaisi said that the BJP hates Indias pluralism and diversity. In 2014, Modi reached Nawaz Sharifs home all of a sudden...What was that? They feel all Muslims in India are Pakistanis. We have to defeat this RSS ideology. They hate Indias pluralism and diversity, he said. Akbar like a cannon, restrained chotte after much effort During a meeting at Moghalpura, Asaduddin Owaisi said that his younger brother Akbaruddin is like a cannon whom he has restrained after much effort. Till when will you use this kind of language?... I have stopped chotte (Akbaruddin) and the day when I ask him to take over, then you handle him.. You dont know who chotte is. He is a canon. Son of Salar. Needs to be pacified by great restraint. Tell where you want us to come... Is there no law and order left in the country?

BJP's Navneet Rana Challenges Owaisi Brothers to Remove Police Security for '15 Seconds'; AIMIM Responds, Unafraid

BJP's Navneet Rana Challenges Owaisi Brothers to Remove Police Security for '15 Seconds'; AIMIM Responds, Unafraid In a scathing attack against AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi and his brother Akbaruddin, BJP leader Navneet Rana has said that if the police were removed from duty for ''15 seconds, the brothers would not know from where they came and where they went''. Rana's blistering attack came in response to a 2013 controversial speech by AIMIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi in which he said it would take them only ''15 minutes'' to balance the ''Hindu-Muslim ratio'' in the country if the police were removed. ''The younger one (Akbarauddin) says remove the police for 15 minutes and we will show what we can do. Let me tell the younger one, you will take 15 minutes; it will be only 15 seconds for us. If you remove police for 15 seconds, you won't know where you came from and where you went away,'' said Rana, the BJP's candidate from Maharashtra's Amravati Lok Sabha seat. Rana shared a video clip of her making the comments on social media platform X. She was campaigning in support of BJP's Hyderabad Lok Sabha candidate K Madhavi Latha and others in Telangana on Wednesday. Asked about her comments, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi said he would like to tell Prime Minister Narendra Modi to give even one hour. ''Modi ji has power, give 15 seconds, rather take one hour. We also would like to see how much humanity is left or not. Who is scared? Who is stopping you? The Prime Minister is yours in Delhi. RSS is yours. Everything is yours. Tell us where to come. We will come,'' Owaisi told reporters. On Navneet Rana's reported comments that a vote to AIMIM would go to Pakistan, Owaisi said RSS and BJP have hatred towards the country's diversity and pluralism. The RSS ideology should be defeated, he said. Owaisi said that PM Modi had suddenly landed in Pakistan from Afghanistan, and reached former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's residence in 2014. ''What was it?,'' he asked. Modi described Muslims as infiltrators and also said that Muslims produce more children, and the same language is being used, he pointed out. When told that the controversy started with the comments of '15 minutes' by his brother Akbaruddin, he said the matter was decided in courts. ''We are saying you do it. Why do you say? We are sitting here. Do it. We are saying do it. You have to do it,'' he said, furthering emphasising his point.

I would have been jailed immediately if...: Waris Pathan demands 'strict action' against Navneet Rana

I would have been jailed immediately if...: Waris Pathan demands 'strict action' against Navneet Rana Reacting to BJP leader Navneet Rana's 15 seconds lagenge remark, AIMIM leader Waris Pathan questioned why the police and the Election Commission have not taken any action against her and claimed that if he had said something like this, he would have been jailed. In a self-made video, the AIMIM leader said that Rana was making such remarks because she understood that she is badly losing from Amravati seat this time. Navneet Rana knows that she is badly losing from Amravati this time. She is unable to accept this and that is why she is uttering all this nonsense. What will you do if the police are removed for 15 seconds? What will she do if the police are removed? Will you kill all Muslims? What are the police and administration doing? Why has no action been taken so far? What is the Election Commission doing? Are such statements allowed in elections? We would like the Election Commissioner to take cognisance of this statement and take strict action. BJP has come to realise that this time it is difficult for them to cross 200-250 seats. If I said something like this, I would have been jailed immediately. Why is everyone silent now? he said. Meanwhile, Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan said that the BJP is working in the direction of PM Modi to spread hatred in the country. PM Modi and Amit Shah are spreading hatred in society so it is natural that their workers and candidates are also going to do the same. What Akbaruddin Owaisi has said is wrong and what Navnit Rana has said is also extremely shameful. They are all working in the direction of PM Modi to spread hatred in the country because PM Modi is losing this election badly. I will issue such a request to the Election Commission that both statements should be investigated and action should be taken against them, Prithviraj Chavan said. Invoking a provocative statement by AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi from 2013, BJP leader Navneet Rana issued a veiled warning to the Owaisi brothers in their stronghold Hyderabad on Wednesday. To the AIMIM leader's statement that they would take them all of '15 minutes' to balance out the Hindu-Muslim ratio in the country, Navneet, who seeking a fresh term in the Lok Sabha from Amravati, on a BJP ticket this time; hit back at the Owaisi brothers, saying it would take us 15 seconds if the police were removed or made to stand down. The younger brother says 'Remove the police for 15 minutes so that we can show them what we can do'. I want to tell the younger brother (Akbaruddin) that it might take you 15 minutes, but it will only take us 15 seconds...it will take us all of 15 seconds if we come to the forefront, Rana was heard saying in a video clip she posted on her X handle, tagging the Owaisi brothers. At a meeting in 2013, Akbaruddin warned 100 crore Hindus that his community would show what it could do if the police were withdrawn for '15 minutes'. Asaduddin has been the elected representative from Hyderabad since 2004. He was previously elected as an MLA twice in the erstwhile undivided Andhra Pradesh. Owaisi faces BJP leader Madhavi Latha. Voting for all 17 seats in Telangana will take place on May 13 in the fourth phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. (ANI)

Patna emerges as India's most flood-prone city, reveals recent study

Patna emerges as India's most flood-prone city, reveals recent study Patna experiences the worst floods in India, followed by West Bengal's Murshidabad and Maharashtra's Thane, according to a district-level flood severity index (DFSI) developed by researchers at IIT-Delhi and IIT-Roorkee. The index takes into account the historical severity of floods based on the number of affected people, the spread and duration of floods. The researchers said the top 10 districts where flood severity is the highest are: Patna, Murshidabad, Thane, North 24 Parganas (West Bengal), Guntur (Andhra Pradesh), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Ballia (Uttar Pradesh), East Champaran (Bihar), and East Medinipur (West Bengal). These are followed by Muzaffarnagar (Bihar), Lakhimpur (Assam), Kota (Rajasthan), Aurangabad (Maharashtra), Malda (West Bengal), Rajkot (Gujarat), Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh), Aurangabad (Bihar), Bahraich (Uttar Pradesh), Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Jalpaiguri (West Bengal), Darjeeling (West Bengal), Dibrugarh (Assam), Azamgarh (Uttar Pradesh), Chamoli (Uttarakhand), West Champaran (Bihar), Amravati (Maharashtra), Medinipur West (West Bengal), and Samastipur (Bihar). Though Chamoli in Uttarakhand does not face recurrent floods, it appears on this list because of a few isolated highly damaging flood events. Among the 30 districts facing the highest risk of floods, 17 are in the Ganga basin and three are in the Brahmaputra basin. Among all the Indian river basins, the Ganga basin has the highest population, and its high flood proneness is worrisome, said the researchers, including Manabendra Saharia, an assistant professor at IIT-Delhi. Assam experiences the highest number of floods in India, having faced more than 800 flood events over 56 years. The other flood-prone states, in descending order of flood events, include Kerala, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra. Data from 1967 to 2023 shows that Thiruvananthapuram has experienced more than 231 floods or more than four events per year on average. Five districts -- Thiruvananthapuram, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Kamrup, and Nagaon -- have been categorised as ''severely flood-prone,'' having recorded more than 178 floods, or more than three events per year on average. The researchers said localised intense rainfall events are likely to rise in the future due to climate change, and therefore, more flash floods are expected. Under the warming climate, the frequency of cyclones will increase, and coastal and nearby inland areas will face more instances of intense rainfall and floods. It is also likely that areas that are not currently flood-prone may begin to see flooding. The researchers said human fatality due to floods is nearly stable or has come down in recent times due to better management despite an increase in the population in India. The number of deaths is around 1,000 per year since 2015, the data showed.

Uddhav: Alliance Partners Received Seats Won Five Times For Alliance's Well-being

Uddhav: Alliance Partners Received Seats Won Five Times For Alliance's Well-being Amid friction in the Maha Vikas Aghadi over Sangli Lok Sabha seat, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday said his party left seats which it had won five times for its partners for the sake of the coalition. Addressing a rally in Sangli for his party candidate Chandrahar Patil, Thackeray exhorted voters not to allow division of votes in the fight against autocracy. Sending a warning to the BJP, he said all days are not the same and exuded confidence that the INDI alliance would win 300 Lok Sabha seats. Congress leader Vishal Patil, who is the grandson of former Maharashtra chief minister late Vasantdada Patil, is in the fray as an independent. The BJP has fielded sitting MP Sanjaykaka Patil. ''We left Ramtek seat which we won five times consecutively. We left Kolhapur seat for Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj. We also left Amravati because the alliance was not just going to benefit me alone, but also our allies,'' Thackeray said. Amravati, Ramtek and Kolhapur seats are being contested by the Congress, part of the MVA along with Thackeray's outfit and the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (SP). Thackeray's remarks come amid Sharad Pawar admitting earlier in the day that the candidate for Sangli Lok Sabha seat was announced without consultation between MVA constituents. Thackeray also assured local Congress leaders that his party will not stand in between their future, an indication that Shiv Sena (UBT) will not stake claim over its traditional seats in the district. Thackeray also said had the BJP not betrayed him, he would have stayed with them. However, Maharashtra was being looted and he did not want to be party to it so walked out of the alliance with the BJP, Thackeray claimed. Big ticket projects that were to come up in Maharashtra, like Vedanta Foxconn, Drugs Bulk Park and International Finance City. got shifted to Gujarat, the former chief minister alleged.

Maharashtra Political Parties Use 42 MLC Vacancies to Pacify Rebels

Mumbai: Political parties in Maharashtra are dangling the carrot of legislative council membership to keep the disgruntled party leaders in check. There are 21 vacant seats in the legislative council and the vacancies will double by the end of July this year. According to sources, all parties have promised the leaders, who were eager to contest Lok Sabha but denied tickets, a seat in the state legislative council. Some have been promised Rajya Sabha membership. Maharashtra has a total 78 members of the Legislative Council. Of these, 31 are elected by members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs), 21 members are elected by local body authorities (like Municipal Corporations), seven members each are elected by graduates and teachers from Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Konkan, Aurangabad, Nagpur and Amravati divisions. In addition to this, 12 members are nominated by Maharashtra Governor. The governor has not nominated 12 members in the Legislative Council. These nominations are done on the recommendations of the state government to the Governor. Besides this, six members, who were elected by local authorities, are retiring by June 21 of this year. Two members each from graduates and teachers constituencies are retiring by July 7 of this year. In addition to this, out of the total 31 members elected by MLAs in the Legislative Council, the tenure of 11 members will end by July 27 of this year. There are already nine vacant seats, which are elected by local bodies, in the council. An official of the state legislature said that the members elected by the MLAs, who are retiring, include BJP's Nilay Naik, Ramrao Patil, Ramesh Patil and Bhai Girkar, NCP's Babajani Durrani, Congress's Wajahat Mirza, Dr. Pradnya Rajiv Satav, Uddhav Thackeray led Shiv Sena (UBT) Anil Parab, Eknath Shinde led Shiv Sena's Manisha Kayande, PWP's Jayant Patil and RSP's Mahadev Jankar. They are going to retire by July 27, 2024. We are going to conduct an election on 11 seats, which are elected by the MLA, after the Lok Sabha election, the official said. Nine vacant seats are not being filled due to non-existence of local bodies for more than a year. Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena has denied ticket to its sitting MPs Hemant Patil from Hingoli, Bhavana Gawali from Yavatmal-Washim and Krupal Tumane from Ramtek. The three are reportedly upset with their party. BJP leader Harshvardhan Patil had opposed supporting the Ajit Pawar faction due to traditional political rivalry in Baramati. In addition to this, Shiv Sena leader Vijay Shivtare's decision to challenge Ajit Pawar in Baramati had caused tension among Mahayuti. Subsequently, Mr Patil and Mr Shivtare have been pacified by Mr. Fadnavis and Mr. Shinde. A Mahayuti leader said that chief minister Eknath Shinde held meetings with Gawali, Patil and Tumane individually. All of them have been assured about their rehabilitations. We have asked the disgruntled leaders to ensure the victory of our candidates in Lok Sabha. We will do their proper political rehabilitation. They will be given an opportunity to go to the Legislative Council or they can get a ticket in the upcoming assembly elections later this year, the Mahayuti leader said. A BJP office bearer said that Harshvardhan Patil will be given an MLC ticket after Lok Sabha election if Mahayuti candidate wins Baramati Lok Sabha seat.

Rahul Gandhi: Alliance government will create millions of 'lakhpatis' in India

Rahul Gandhi: Alliance government will create millions of 'lakhpatis' in India Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday claimed the Mahalaxmi scheme and his party's promise of the right to apprenticeship, both aimed to uplift the poor women and youth, will change the face of the country by creating crores of ''lakhpatis''. Addressing a rally in Maharashtra's Amravati district, Gandhi also said no force in the world can change the Constitution of India. The Congress, which is a part of the opposition INDIA alliance, has listed the Mahalaxmi scheme and the right to apprenticeship among its various promises made in its manifesto for the ongoing Lok Sabha polls. Gandhi claimed that 10 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rule saw 22-25 persons becoming ''arabpatis'' (billionaires), while the INDIA alliance, if voted to power, will create crores of ''lakhpatis''. He further claimed that the BJP wanted to change the Constitution because it did not want 90 per cent of the population, which comprises the backwards, advisasis, Dalits and minorities, to know their real potential. ''No force in the world can change the Constitution, wonder what gave the BJP confidence to even think of doing so,'' he said. The Mahalaxmi scheme, aiming to provide Rs 1 lakh every year to the poor women, and the right to apprenticeship, which aims to enable graduates and diploma holders to get a one-year job as apprentices and provide Rs 1 lakh in their bank accounts, will change the face of the country and make crores of ''lakhpatis'', Gandhi claimed.

Rahul Gandhi's Minority Agenda Echoes Manmohan Singh's Legacy: Tawde

Rahul Gandhi's Minority Agenda Echoes Manmohan Singh's Legacy: Tawde BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde on Tuesday claimed that like former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's ''agenda'' is that the minorities should have the first right to the country's wealth, and not tribals or Dalits. He was replying to a question about the manifesto of the NCP led by Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, a BJP ally, which mentions a caste-based census. Congress too has been demanding such a survey. ''Caste-based census is not Rahul Gandhi's agenda. His agenda is what Manmohan Singh had stated earlier: minorities have the first right to the country's wealth,'' Tawde told reporters. BJP welcomed anyone for a debate on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks in this regard, Tawde added. ''I am using the words minorities; he (Manmohan Singh) had said very clearly that Adivasis and Dalits would not get anything. And there is no comment on it by Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, (Mallikarjun) Kharge, which means they approve of it. Does it mean that (Maharashtra Congress president) Nana Patole and his allies Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray also want the same thing that Singh had said?'' he asked. Asked about opposition's allegation that the BJP lowered the standard of the contest with the unopposed election in the Surat Lok Sabha constituency, Tawde said, ''If a candidate files nomination papers with errors, it does not mean standards of the campaign were lowered. We had even requested that independent candidates withdraw their nominations before filing. How can such a request be termed as lowering the campaign standards?'' The BJP candidate was declared winner in Surat after the nomination of his Congress rival was rejected as his proposers disowned their signatures on the form and all other candidates subsequently pulled out of the race. Tawde also alleged that Congress candidate from South Goa, Viriato Fernandes, had said that the country's Constitution should not be applicable to Goa. ''A Congress leader in Karnataka also made a similar statement. It is a fact that the country's Constitution was amended 80 times during the Congress regime....prime minister Narendra Modi started the celebration of Constitution Day. Unfortunately, Rahul Gandhi is continuously trying to mislead people. When there is no other issue, Congress starts a conversation about Constitution changing,'' the BJP leader said. Without naming Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, who recently used the word ''dancer'' for the BJP's Amravati candidate Navneet Rana, Tawde, a former Maharashtra minister, lamented the declining standards of campaigning in the state.

Former PMs worked to make new India, the incumbent one only criticises others: Sharad Pawar

AMRAVATI: NCP (SP) leader Sharad Pawar on Monday claimed former prime ministers worked to make a new India but PM Narendra Modi only criticises others and doesn't speak about what his government had done for the people in the last ten years. Addressing a campaign rally in Amravati for a Maha Vikas Aghadi candidate, Pawar said former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's contribution to the country cannot be questioned. He claimed some BJP leaders had spoken publicly about changing the Constitution and appealed to the people to not allow autocracy to take shape in India. A high-profile poll battle is shaping up in the Amravati Lok Sabha constituency where the BJP has fielded Navneet Rana, the sitting MP who won the 2019 polls as an Independent candidate, against Balwant Wankhede of Congress. Pawar alleged PM Modi was trying to create fear and emulating Russian President Vladamir Putin. Pawar said he has come to apologise to the people of Amravati for the mistake he had committed in the 2019 elections by supporting the candidate (Navneet Rana). In the last elections, I had sought the support of people and made an appeal (to elect Rana). People elected the candidate I had appealed for. Time has come to amend that mistake, he said. Wankhede, who belongs to Congress, is contesting the election as a candidate of the tripartite Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar), and Congress. After Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, I saw the working of almost all PMs ranging from Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Narasimha Rao to Manmohan Singh. Their efforts were to make a new India, but the incumbent PM only criticises, Pawar said. He said that no one in history can forget the contribution of former PM Jawaharlal Nehru but the prime minister (Modi) continuously criticises him. Instead of telling what the Central government did in the last ten years, he (Modi) keeps criticising others, Pawar added. We fear that a new Putin is in the making in India, he said. He hailed Shiv Sena (UBT) led by Uddhav Thackeray for shouldering the responsibility to protect the national interest by working closely with the Congress and the NCP (SP) like in the past.

Over 1.50 lakh new voters added in eight LS seats of Maharashtra

Over 1.50 lakh new voters added in eight LS seats of Maharashtra More than 1.52 lakh new voters have been registered in eight out of total 48 Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra in the latest round of electoral roll revision, in which the number of new women voters was more than their male counterparts, officials said. In this special drive conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI), as many as 82,658 new female voters were registered as against the 69,652 new male voters in these eight constituencies - Buldhana, Akola, Amravati, Wardha, Yavatmal-Washim, Hingoli, Nanded, and Parbhani. However, the total number of female voters across these eight segments is way below the count of male voters. There are 53,99,057 female voters as against the 77,21,374 male voters. There are 432 voters registered as transgenders, an official statement issued by the chief electoral office of Maharashtra. These eight constituencies will go to polls in the second phase on May 7. With the addition of voters during the special drive of the ECI conducted between January 23 and April 4, the number of electorates rose by 1,52,330. This took the number of voters in these eight seats to 1,49,25,912. ''Earlier, the ECI used to close its voter registration in January, while the actual campaign commences once the candidates are finalized. The candidates and their teams make efforts like de-cluttering the voters' list, contacting potential voters, among others,'' an official from the chief electoral office said. A political party functionary working for a Lok Sabha poll candidate said, ''With the new provision of the ECI to allow registration of voters beyond January 25, the potential candidates and their teams took extra efforts to complete the registration process of the potential voters, who are otherwise averse to visit the government office and get their names registered.'' The official further said, this permission (for voter registration) turned out to be a win-win situation for voters as well as for candidates. ''The candidates can take credit for helping potential voters in getting their names enrolled in the voters' list and also expect his or her vote for themselves. So in addition to the ECI's routine exercise, such a move also increases the enrolment of voters,'' the official added.

SC upholds Amravati MP Navneet Rana's Scheduled Caste certificate

NEW DELHI: In a major relief to Navneet Rana, sitting Amaravati MP from Maharashtra, the Supreme Court in its verdict on Thursday reversed a 2021 Bombay High Court judgment that cancelled Rana's Scheduled Caste certificate of Mochi, calling it forged. A two-judge bench of the top court, led by Justice JK Maheshwari and also comprising Justice Sanjay Karol, passed the verdict, after hearing Rana's appeal. She had moved the apex court by filing an appeal in it, and challenged the Bombay HC's June 2021 judgement cancelling her caste certificate on grounds of it being fraudulently obtained by her. The Bombay HC had in its verdict cancelled and confiscated her caste certificate, forcing her to move to the apex court. It is to be noted that Rana has recently joined the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) and would contest the 2024 upcoming general polls, as she is the party's choice for the same seat (Amaravati), which is a reserved category constituency. It is significant move, the Amravati MP is expected to file her nomination papers today itself as a BJP candidate from the same Amaravati constituency for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Setting aside the Bombay HC verdict, the SC in its judgement today, said, In the instant case, the Scrutiny Committee duly considered the documents before it and passed its decision complying with principles of natural justice. In light of the discussion and the peculiar facts and circumstances of the case, the instant appeals stand allowed and the High Court order is set aside. The HC had passed the verdict on a petition filed by Shiv Sena leader and former MP Anandra Vithoba Adsul, who had challenged her Mochi caste ertificate. The HC's two-judge bench headed by, Justice RD Dhanuka and VG Bisht, had passed the ruling against Rana and held that she obtained the caste certificate by fabricating records making her to contest the parliamentary elections as a reserved category candidate. It also imposed a cost of 2 lakh on her for fabricating rhe documents.
