Delhi Police detain people demonstrating against AAP, Section 144 imposed on DDU Marg ahead of 'Jail Bharo' march

Delhi Police detain people demonstrating against AAP, Section 144 imposed on DDU Marg ahead of 'Jail Bharo' march Amid the mega political showdown over the arrest of CM Kejriwal's former aide in connection with the alleged assault on AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal, Delhi Police on Sunday detained some people who were protesting against the ruling party in the national capital. The people, sporting black topis inscribed with the words 'Aajan Aadmi Party', were rounded up and dragged into police vehicles. The AAP, earlier on Friday, declared a 'Jail Bharo' march to the BJP headquarters in the national capital to protest what they claimed to be arbitrary arrests of its leader at the behest of the Centre. Decrying the arrest of his former aide in the assault case, CM Kejriwal, on Saturday, accused the BJP at the Centre of resorting to a 'Jail Ka Khel' (game of putting leaders in jail) against his party, adding that he would lead a 'Jail Bharo' march to the BJP headquarters on Sunday along with his top party leaders as well as workers. Speaking to ANI on Sunday, DCP Delhi Central, Harsha Vardhan Mandava said, Based on the information we received through social media and other channels, we have made preventive arrangements on DDU Marg to ensure that the law and order are maintained at all costs. We are focused and committed to making adequate security deployments and have barricades in place to ward off any attempt to disrupt law and order. Section 144 has been imposed on DDU Marg and there is no permission for any kind of protest here, he informed. Earlier in the day, elaborate security arrangements were made outside the BJP headquarters ahead of the AAP's 'Jail Bharo' march. Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory ahead of the AAP protest, warning of possible snarls at DDU Marg, IP Marg, Minto Road and Vikas Marg. It added that DDU Marg may remain closed to traffic between 11 am to 2 pm, urging commuters to avoid stretches that are likely to experience logjams. Earlier, on Saturday, Kejriwal's former PA was arrested in connection with the alleged assault on Maliwal. He was produced before the Tis Hazari Court, which remanded him in police custody for five days. Earlier, the AAP chief released a personalised video after Bibhav's arrest, saying, You can see how they (BJP) are after the AAP. One after another, they are putting our leaders behind bars. They put me, Manish Sisodia, Satyendra Jain, and Sanjay Singh behind bars. Today, they put my (former) PA in jail. Now they are saying they will put Raghav Chadha, Atishi, and Saurabh Bharadwaj in jail. Perhaps it was our fault that we built schools and mohalla clinics, while also providing electricity for free, which they failed to accomplish. I would like to tell the Prime Minister: you are playing a 'jail ka khel' with us. Tomorrow, I will lead a march to the BJP headquarters along with all my top leaders, MLAs, and MPs at noon. You can put whoever you want in jail, Kejriwal said. Significantly, the Vigilance Department, last month, terminated Bibhav's service as the CM's personal assistant over a pending criminal case. Japanese authorities urge caution after wild bears attack several people in the northeast

Japanese authorities urge caution after wild bears attack several people in the northeast Japanese authorities have warned residents Saturday to be aware of wild bears in the country's northeast after several people were attacked, including police officers. The bears, measuring about 50 cm (1.6 feet) in height, were seen in the area, including Akita and Fukushima Prefectures. Two police officers were attacked Saturday in the city of Kazuno in Akita while recovering the body of a missing man, according to Japanese media reports. The man had gone hunting for bamboo shoots in the mountains a few days earlier where he was found dead in the area with gash wounds. It remains unclear if he died due to a bear attack. The officers are in serious condition, though not life-threatening, reports said. In response, some wooded areas have been closed off in Kazuno ''for an indefinite time, officials said in a statement. News footage showed police officers putting up signs warning people to stay out of mountainous areas where the bears were sighted. Over the weekend, patrol cars were dispatched together with a helicopter search to locate the bears. Akita Prefectural Police have urged people to keep bells and other noise-producing devices on hand to scare the bears away in case of an encounter, and not to go out at night. Thousands of Asiatic black bears live in the wild throughout Japan. Attacks have risen as the borders blur between the bears' habitats and people's dwellings. The scarcity of acorns, berries and other food, possibly connected to climate change, is also blamed for the surge in bear encounters.

BJD-BJP trying to hoodwink people, says Sachin Pilot

BHUBANESWAR: Senior Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Saturday said BJD and BJP have a covert understanding and are fighting elections in the state only to hoodwink people. They (BJD and BJP) are running a double-engine government to exploit the resources of the state and its people, Pilot told mediapersons during his visit to the state to campaign for his partys candidates in Balasore Lok Sabha constituency. Coming down on the BJD government in the state, Pilot said it has failed on all fronts during the last 24 years of its rule. No steps were taken for development of the state during the period, he added. Corruption, unemployment and price rise have increased during the BJD governments tenure and the Congress has emerged as the only alternative for people, Pilot said. The Congress leader said INDIA bloc has forged ahead in the four phases of elections completed so far. On the other hand, BJP has gone on back foot in several states in north India including Rajasthan where it is in power. Addressing an election rally in Balasore Lok Sabha constituency in support of party candidate and former Union minister Srikant Jena, Pilot lashed out at the Centre for trying to demolish democratic structures in the country. He accused the Narendra Modi government of making India Opposition-free. They have frozen the bank accounts of the Congress and sent two chief ministers to jail, he added.

Pakistan: Load-shedding makes lives of people a living hell in Sindh

Pakistan: Load-shedding makes lives of people a living hell in Sindh With the rise in mercury levels, load-sheddings in different cities of Sindh province of Pakistan have made the lives of people a living hell and consistent load-shedding has caused chaos among the people of the region. Mauhaumad Ovais, a resident of Karachi spoke about no electricity for a longer duration in those parts of the country where the people could not afford to pay inflated bills, power cut in Karachi continues for about eight hours. Mauhaumad Ovais said, The situation in terms of load shedding in Karachi has yet not improved, a general power cut in the city is about eight hours long. And even then we have to pay such high electricity bills. The middle-income person could either pay his bills, educate his children, or pay for their medical bills. People are suffering and daily life is being affected. Many heavy electricity-consuming appliances such as refrigerators, freezers and even UPSs are short-circuiting and being destroyed due to the intermittent outages. The government is cutting corners on basic amenities like waste collection and treatment which is making the people fall ill. Even after all this when we default on our bills once while combating inflation and high bills. We are warned and threatened that our electricity supply will be cut, he added. Ahmed, another resident of Karachi, raised similar issues of electricity and stated that a monopoly is being maintained. He called for the government's intervention and breaking the monopoly by introducing other private companies to create a little competition in the market. Through a network spanning 6,500 square kilometres, KE supplies power to all residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural areas that fall under the city's ambit and beyond, serving over 3.4 million customers across Karachi. Ahmed said, There is just one company that is supplying electricity, and they are not allowing any other company to enter the market so that their monopoly continues. The people are suffering from extreme temperatures here, and the government had assured us that there would be no load shedding until this heat wave passes, but still, there is load shedding of several hours. The government needs to intervene and break the monopoly by introducing other private companies, as a little competition in the market will be better for the general public. We have raised the complaints of wrongful billing to the authorities but either they don't pay attention or say that we have to pay the amount. In both ways, we suffer a lot, we have to compensate for the electricity with other important expenses like medical, or educational, he added. Niaz, another resident, echoed similar remarks and added that the Sindh administration does not want to address the problem. He said that people have been facing several basic problems like roads, electricity, cleanliness, and drinking water. Niaz said, Be it the problems of Karachi or the problems of Sindh both of them are the same. There are several basic problems, like roads, electricity, cleanliness, and drinking water. If the government had longed to solve the problems of the people, then these problems would have been solved a long time ago. However, I believe that the Sindh administration does not want these issues of the people to be resolved. We have also been demanding a relief package but there is no action taken towards it, he added. Commercial, as well as household work, is being affected, with people losing sleep as well due to long hours of load shedding in the night with the accompanying heat. (ANI)

Ethylene oxide treatment done only for health of people, says FISS on ban on spices

Ethylene oxide treatment done only for health of people, says FISS on ban on spices The Federation of Indian Spice Stakeholders has stepped into the matter of Indian spices being banned in Singapore and Hong Kong, followed recently by Nepal stating that the treatment of Ethylene oxide (EtO) is done to save people from the harmful effects of processed food. Speaking to ANI, Ashwin Nayak, Chairman of the Federation of Indian Spice Stakeholders (FISS), said, This Ethylene oxide treatment is done only for the health of the people. If the spices used in food are not processed properly, microbiological parameters are found in them, like Salmonella, E-Coli, Aflatoxin, and Coliform, all of these are also dangerous for the body. When we treat them with ethylene oxide, microbiological parameters come under control and their dangerous effects are eliminated. According to FISS, India's reputation as the leading producer and exporter of spices has been tarnished by recent export recalls due to the presence of ethylene oxide residues in food. Numerous reports have emerged regarding the use of Ethylene Oxide (EtO) in spices and spice products. It's important to clarify that Ethylene oxide is not a pesticide. FISS says that ethylene oxide is a sterilizing agent used to reduce or eliminate microbial elements, including dangerous pathogens like Salmonella and E. Coli, in spices and food products. Additionally, Ethylene oxide is widely used to sterilize heat-sensitive medical disposables such as syringes and catheters, with nearly 50 per cent of the world's disposable medical devices undergoing EtO sterilization. These practices are approved even for the most vulnerable patients. The federation said in a release that it assures consumers and all those concerned that Ethylene oxide is not a pesticide. EtO is a sterilizing agent that is used to contain or minimize microbial elements in spices and food products, including life-threatening pathogens like Salmonella, E Coli etc. India is the hub of spices. India is the largest exporter of spices in the whole world. The thing due to which there is an uproar right now has been approved by the American Spice Association in America. The spices used there contain 80 to 90 treated spices, Nayak added. He said, In many countries of the world, some amounts of ethylene oxide are allowed in spices. Therefore, there is no need to be under any illusion. Going forward, to avoid any export effect, the FSSI wants the Spice Board to keep in mind the amount of ethyl oxide allowed in each country. In the statement, the federation clarified that EtO is not harmful to humans and is known to occur naturally in flora. EtO contamination can also occur due to its natural presence without EtO treatment. The primary purpose of treatment is to protect public health, the statement added. The Centre for Food Safety in Hong Kong, during a normal food survey, found the pesticide in three MDH spice products: Madras Curry Powder, Sambhar Masala Powder, and Curry Powder; as well as in Everest Group's Fish Curry Masala. Corresponding to this, both companies' products were recalled after Singapore's food authorities discovered carcinogenic chemicals in them. Prolonged exposure to ethylene oxide increases the risk of cancer and makes it dangerous for human consumption. Nepal also joined these two countries and banned the import of two Indian spice brands. He also accused PM Modi of supporting the illegal Mahayuti government in Maharashtra. We have not used bulldozers to date... The Election Commission should take action against those who make instigating speeches. The Prime Minister himself is doing it. He is provoking people. After our government comes, everything will be protected as per our Constitution, we will follow the Constitution, Kharge told reporters here. He was speaking at a press conference in Mumbai. Nationalist Congress Party (SP) Sharad Pawar and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackery were also present. INDIA bloc will win 46 out of 48 seats in Maharashtra. People are saying this themselves. Our alliance will win maximum seats and defeat BJP..., Kharge claimed. The Congress chief also lamented that the party symbol was aken away from the eal parties in Maharashtra, referring to Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party and given to parties supporting the BJP. The illegal 'Mahayuti' government of Maharashtra was formed on the basis of betrayal and conspiracy and the Prime Minister himself is supporting it and his rallies are also being held in Maharashtra and wherever he goes, he tries to create a rift among the people..., he alleged, adding, The party symbol was taken away from the real parties and given to the parties supporting BJP. This is the decision of the court, ECI but everything happens on the instructions of Modi ji.... PM Modi is saying that he is providing 5 kg ration to 80 crore poor. We will give 10 kg after forming the government..., he added. Speaking on the alliance between the Aam Admi Party and Congress in the National Capital for the May 20 Lok Sabha elections and the two parties' decision to go solo in Punjab, the Congress chief said, We have alliance only on 3 seats in Delhi, there is an alliance in Chandigarh, we have given them seats in Gujarat and Haryana, we will work there only. But we are fighting against each other in Punjab. This is a democracy, it is not autocracy. We will do whatever has to be done to defeat BJP, he said. The Congress also said that West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, who recently announced to provide outside support to the INDIA bloc government if it is voted to power after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is naturally with the anti-BJP front. Mamata ji, first she said that they will support from outside. Recently she has said that if the INDIA government is formed then she will join the government, so, naturally, she is with the alliance, Kharge said. Elections in 6 Lok Sabha seats of Mumbai are scheduled for Phase 5. Modi inciting people, dividing society, alleges Kharge; Uddhav says 'acche din' coming after June 4

MUMBAI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of inciting people and dividing society through his election speeches. Kharge was addressing a press conference of the INDIA bloc, where NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray and other leaders were present. The opposition alliance held an election rally in the city on Friday. No prime minister before Modi has ever indulged in inciting people like he has been doing. He speaks about democracy repeatedly but doesn't adhere to the tenets of democracy, Kharge said. Responding to a question on PM Modi' statement that the Congress will bulldoze the Ram mandir in Ayodhya and also restore Article 370 if the INDIA bloc is voted to power, Kharge said, We have never used a bulldozer on anyone. Modi has the habit of lying and inciting people about things which Congress will never do or the things that are impossible to be implemented. Asked about his party's stand on Article 370, Kharge said , I am not answerable to Modi. We will implement what we have promised in our manifesto. Attacking the PM further, he said, Wherever he goes, he tries to create division, speaks of dividing society. PM Modi had described the Congress' manifesto as Muslim League manifesto, but now he says it is a Maoist manifesto, Kharge added. The Congress chief assured that reservation as enshrined in the Constitution will continue and nobody can touch it. Speaking on the occasion, Thackeray said, 'Achche din' are coming from June 4 (when Lok Sabha poll results will be declared) when INDIA bloc-led government takes charge. PM Modi calls us 'nakli' (fake) Shiv Sena, tomorrow he may call RSS as 'nakli Sangh', the former chief minister said. The BJP is floating 'Pakistan flags in our rally' narrative to divert people's attention from issues like jobs, he alleged. Pawar said that after coming to power, the INDIA bloc government's duty will be to protect all religious places in the country. Kharge noted that if elected, the opposition alliance's government will implement a simple, single rate GST, replacing the present GST. We introduced Food Security Act, but PM Modi is taking credit for free ration supply, he alleged.

Odisha: Folk artists perform at poll rallies, help candidates garner people's support

Odisha: Folk artists perform at poll rallies, help candidates garner people's support By Sandeep Pradhan Amid the high-octane election campaign across the country, the folk artists from Odisha's western part are busy participating in public gatherings helping the candidates in garnering people's support. Even with the emergence of social media platforms and modern musical instruments (like DJs), artists performing folk art still keep audience spellbound during election campaigns in the coastal state of Odisha. Extensive election campaigns across the state extended the opportunity for folk artists too to better their financial status. Apart from opting for new methods, political parties still prefer the performance of folk artists as the most effective tool to attract people to gatherings and rallies. A local artist Shankar Prasad Behra said that during the time of elections, the demand for folk artists from Odisha's western part is on the rise and these local artists attract people towards political rallies and public meetings held by candidates. Speaking to ANI, the artist said that the world-famous Sambalpuria folk art is very popular in the western part of Odisha and through this artwork, they attract people to the venue of election campaigns and appeal to them to vote in support of a candidate. We have performed across the state and made appeals to the voters during the poll campaigns to register their active participation in the festival of democracy, Behra said. As invited by different political parties, we wrote songs for them and performed as well, the artists said, adding that be it any party, we prepare songs for them and perform. As compared to the previous time, the trend of engaging folk artists into the poll campaign has witnessed a slight decline due to the emergence of social media platforms and other modes of communication, pointed Behra, adding that currently, our team comprising of singers, dancers and musicians are getting good opportunities to make money. Still, political parties engage with folk artists in the campaign because of their calibre to connect with people through their performances in local language and dance, the artist said. The assembly elections and Lok Sabha polls in Odisha are taking place simultaneously. The elections are being held across four phases--from May 13 to June 1. The counting of votes will be held on June 4. In the last assembly elections in 2019, the BJD won 112 out of 146 seats. BJP won 23 seats and Congress got nine seats. In the Lok Sabha elections, the BJD mopped up the lion's share of the electoral spoils, with the BJP and the Congress bringing up the rear. The BJD won 12 seats, the BJP finished a close second at 8, and the Congress bagged just a lone seat. (ANI)

On flooding in Kazakhstan, President Tokayev emphasised that the people of Kazakhstan showed unity and togetherness during the difficult days experienced by the country during the flooding. He said, As a result of coordinated actions by the government, state agencies, specialised services, and the assistance of volunteers, more than 119,000 people, including almost 45,000 children, were evacuated in a timely manner. In a very short time, the national and regional headquarters of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan were established to provide comprehensive support to the victims of flooding. A large-scale campaign, From Heart to Heart, is underway, having already dispatched over 1,500 tonnes of food and essential goods worth approximately 770 million tenge to the disaster areas, he also said. The involvement of 12,000 volunteers from ethnic-cultural associations in collecting charitable and humanitarian aid, organising evacuations, and informing citizens exemplifies the unity and mutual aid among citizens. The primary task is to ensure the safety of citizens. The government is taking all necessary measures, and appropriate funds have been allocated. Large companies and business representatives are also providing assistance. The government will reduce budgetary expenses in favour of urgent tasks to eliminate the consequences of the floods. A regime of strict economy of state funds will be introduced in the country, the President also said. The government is committed to a rapid and comprehensive response to natural disasters, including compensation for damages, construction of housing, and restoration of infrastructure. The President announced that the affected families will receive a one-time payment and compensation for damaged or destroyed property after assessments. The state will repair damaged housing and construct new homes, replacing those destroyed in the floods. Large-scale construction is expected to provide new opportunities for citizens to relocate to areas with better economic and environmental conditions, he also said. President Tokayev also shed light on tackling floods and preventing natural disasters in the future There is a need to fundamentally rebuild the interaction between the state and science to create an effective system for combating natural disasters. The Kazakh Hydromeliorative Construction Institute will be reestablished, and the work of the Institute of Seismology in Almaty will be enhanced. There needs to be special focus on studying and mitigating climate change impacts, he said. The entire water management system will be reorganised, including modernising companies like Kazvodhoz and Nurinsky Group Water Supply. Twenty new reservoirs will be constructed, and 15 existing ones will be reconstructed across 11 regions of Kazakhstan to reduce flooding risks in 134 settlements. The Development Concept for Water Resources Management will be enhanced to include advanced international practices for flood prevention and impact reduction, according to the Embassy of Kazakhstan. The technical resources of the Ministry of Emergency Situations will be updated and its supply of specialised equipment will be enhanced, including helicopters and airplanes. The National Hydrogeological Service will be reestablished to explore and protect underground water resources. Ongoing initiatives to green and clean territories across all regions, urging local community engagement to improve living conditions, he also said. President Tokayev briefly touched upon the reforms in the country, noting that all branches of power are now operating in a new coordinate system, centred on protecting and promoting the legitimate interests, rights, and freedoms of the individual. Kazakhstan has begun transitioning to a new economic model based on principles of fairness, inclusivity, pragmatism, and laying a solid foundation for improving the welfare of its citizens. Kazakhstan is building a country of equal opportunities, where everyone will have a decent standard of living, he added. Meanwhile, in international relations and foreign affairs, Tokayev covered several issues related to global affairs and challenges. Citizens of Kazakhstan can visit dozens of countries without a visa, and this list is continually expanding thanks to the country's targeted efforts. Kazakhstan is currently ranked 66th in the World Passport Index. Every citizen of Kazakhstan enjoys all the privileges regardless of ethnic background, views, and beliefs. The turquoise passport of Kazakhstan symbolises the high values upon which our country is built. It is recognised worldwide as the document of a progressive, modern state, according to the Embassy of Kazakhstan. Founded in 1995, the assembly is a constitutional body aimed at strengthening the ethnic accord in the country and ensuring all rights and freedoms of citizens are observed regardless of one's ethnic affiliation. Israeli strike kills Palestinian militant, wounds eight people in West Bank

Israeli strike kills Palestinian militant, wounds eight people in West Bank A Palestinian militant was killed and eight other people wounded on Friday in an Israeli air strike on the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry and Israeli military said. The armed wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) group named the killed man as member Islam Khamayseh. The Palestinian health ministry said the eight wounded people were in stable condition and receiving treatment at hospitals. Reuters could not immediately confirm their identities. The Israeli military said a fighter jet and helicopter conducted the strike, a rarity in the West Bank, where violence had been surging long before the Gaza war. Israel said it struck a compound used as an operations center by militants and confirmed the killing of Khamayseh, who it said was responsible for several attacks against Israelis. The strike was carried out to remove an imminent threat, it added, without disclosing details on the threat. Images circulating on social media, which Reuters could not immediately verify, showed a cloud of smoke over the refugee camp, which has over the years become a densely populated urban area. Residents of the camp said a house was targeted. According to the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA, some 23,600 residents of the camp were registered as refugees - people who were expelled or fled their homes during the 1948 war surrounding Israel's creation, or their descendants. The West Bank is among territories Israel seized in a 1967 Middle East war. The Palestinians want it to be the core of an independent Palestinian state. Some Palestinian groups like the PIJ have engaged in armed struggle to confront Israel's decades-long military occupation.
